Start learning estonian. Even if you speak very little and make mistakes, estonians highly value foreigners (and perhaps future citizens?) who want to integrate into the society by speaking estonian. I'd also suggest finding some groups to hang out with. Perhaps you can find some facebook groups of people from your country who have moved to Estonia? You could also contact your embassy here in Estonia and see if they have any knowledge of suchs groups or organizations. This way you can get tons of good information about local aspects, feel more secure and have more fun.

91psyko

i can only say stuff like tere, aitäh, palun and few other things but I try to say it as much as possible ;) people do appreciate it sometimes

[deleted]

Politsei Eestis teeb ainult siis, kui ise sind karistab. Teise kodaniku avaldus ainult segab töötamist

alrightshud

Hi! I'll also move to Estonia this month, and I asked the same question some time ago. [Here's the post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Eesti/comments/uq4ecx/mediterranean_person_in_tallinn_what_to_pack/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share). There were lots of helpful comments. I'm coming from the Mediterranean region of Turkey, and since you're coming from Latin America it should be helpful for you too.

juneyourtech

Turkey is a large country; just say what your citizenship is, where you were born and where you grew up. It will add enough context to customise responses for your use case.

alrightshud

I already did :) And I linked my post in the comment you just replied. I'm suggesting OP read the comments on my post.

juneyourtech

Ok.

Slithry_Snek

Read through the pinned post "Frequently discussed topics" on this sub. I'm a local and I learned so much about my own country there.

Affectionate-Habit94

Rule number one: don't take any advice here seriously. Rule number two: See rule number one

Kofaone

Ok I won't take your advice seriously too lmao

[deleted]

A paradox

nell57

The pessimistic ones have been in their homes reading reddit too much it seems to see any positive sides to living in Estonia - likely should travel around the world a bit. I have several friends from outside the country currently living in Estonia and all are loving it - there are some stuff you have to get used to (the long winter nights) and adapt to (warm winter clothes) but once you get through that there's a lot of cool stuff about Estonia. :)

saunamees

Learn proper sauna etiquette. Also, start loving saunas.

pihlakmari

Welcome to Estonia - hope you like it in here! Tallinn is a great place to be based, but take some trips on weekends to enjoy our nature - it is very serene and untouched. Many foreners I have met have said they fell in love with forests here. So gather some new friends and go to mushrooming and picking berries - it is very common activity here. Always take Estonians complaining about their country with a grain of salt - it is a bit of a national sport, but all in all nothings that bad and you shouldn't take it too seriously. "It's so dark and cold here" - well, yeah, during winter, but we have white nights during summer and seeing the seasons change is throughly awesome! Estonians might look reserved and/or serious from the distance, but we warm up pretty quickly, especially after few glasses of something. Best place to meet new people is through hobbies and different activities.

vacsok

That^^^ Doo those things

SupergaybuttStuff

No need for winter clothes! Dont pack any.

realmen420

I guess you mean buying it all there, right? I’ve heard this before. Any place you recommend for winter clothes?

Fine-Flamingo-7204

Yes, buy it in Estonia because the winter clothes are different from latin america and won't work for the weather

[deleted]

Thrift shops generally, id say

the-flying-dragon

Joke or not, you can find really good things from thrift shops

SpaceW0lf7

Bro in April 2022 it was snowing so you decide

Sarikaduja

Winter clothes in Latin America are not considered winter clothes on Estonia

teoska91

Don’t fall for the positive PRs about Estonia, e.g. there are billions of free-to-use Wi-Fi spots around the country. Be prepared to get used to sarcasm. Sarcasm is common in Estonia as far as I have seen in my 3 years here.

x386dev

What do you mean? You don't have forest Wi-Fi?

teoska91

Forest? I even barely run into free Wi-Fi spots in the city centre. Otherwise I’d like to see an extraordinary type of tree that fruits free Wi-Fi broadcast in the Estonian forests.

juneyourtech

You see, forests in Estonia are all free Wi-Fi forests, because every other tree bears a fruit in the form of a fully-functioning Wi-Fi router :> You're free to use the bandwidth of the fruit, but once you pick said fruit off the tree, it will stop working, and will vanish into the air.

Scared_Woodpecker411

Sarcasm. It was. Jokes apart, I guess now it is assumed that you have you internet with you on you phone.

Scared_Woodpecker411

😁🐸😸

BoyFromNorth

Small talk is not really a big topic in Estonia. People might appear cold and distanced but don't take it personally, they are usually like this even with their neighbours besides whom they have lived together for decades. If you are religious, try to avoid that topic the first few years with your close friends, people who believe in god are secretly considered crazy or weirdos and not taken very seriously. Don't expect Estonians open up to you within few months, execept when they're drinking, the genie in the bottle transforms them into another species.

PartyScrewer

Yeah, be peaceful and be prepared for actual liberty of speech. Mother nature here is pretty harmless and the crime rate is 0 compared to US. Alcohol is pretty cheap here but if you're looking for a better deal go to latvia, its as close as driving to a nearby city. Estonias love to drink, if you're offered to get mega wasted then you should. Weed's expensive, but 99% of times its good shit. If you're buying one then you might actually get 0.8-0.9, shoulnt be a problem in tallinn tho. Capital city is like any other. Big mixture of a lot of different people. More south you go the less "mixture" you see. Its a small country, which means news travel fast.

Long_Atmosphere6767

alcohol and crime rate are correlated, drinking with randoms could be fun but you should try to choose your company at least a little bit. just use common sense regarding that

juneyourtech

> if you're offered to get mega wasted then you should If I were invited like that, I'd see, if the place has some non-alcoholic stuff, too: fizzy drinks, food, etc. > choose your company Yeah, because people over here get injured or killed in groups of barely-strangers or acquaintances that love to drink alcohol.

[deleted]

Estonians are very physically affectionate people, if you don't give a firm handshake and a kiss on the cheek when meeting someone new they might take offense!

b0uncyfr0

You, random person on the internet - will get lots of foreigners in trouble!! :)

PR4NK3D

Oi ei

wrebble

Hospitalization speedrun any%

samuelkirss

And always say hello on the streets and elevators.

Fine-Flamingo-7204

Don't forget a BIG friendly smile!

x386dev

And a french kiss.

krevko

The kiss-on-cheek part is the most important one with Estonians. Never miss it when meeting strangers

qUxUp

Since the poster forgot /s, I'll point out that what he said is a lie. Estonians usually keep to themselves. While the joke is appreciated, I don't want op to suffer trauma :)

Axemic

Also talkative, feel free to talk to any stranger at a bus stop. You forgot that.

[deleted]

Skip the cheek, go straight to the bear hug and French kiss. The Estonians will assume you're a foreigner otherwise. Remember to always wave and greet everyone you see on the street. It's deeply rude otherwise. Lastly, elevators are a social environment. Feel free to put on some music and start chatting with anyone near by. You'll be friends with the entire nation in days.

highLordd

learn atleast little estonian, the thing i hate the most when theres for example, russian who never bothered to learn estonian and expects you to know their language. Most annoying thing ever

[deleted]

All of my Russian friends in Estonia had parents who actively discouraged them from learning Estonian. It still makes me so angry thinking about it.

wasted_name

SpaceW0lf7

Bro the language has a syllable ever other letter

drkole

work on your alcohol tolerance

ZaRalf

Avoid Pärnu at all cost

nublusi

I mean if you exclude the "linnakad" here the people are quite nice. Also very nice beaches.

Ok-Difficulty-8866

This is /s , Pärnu is coziest of them all

M2dis

Yeah if you want to get your teeth knocked in

Ok-Difficulty-8866

Yep haha

Long_Atmosphere6767

never understood if it's a meme or not. people seem nice here. just kolisin pärnu

p6xx

Not any more, Tallinn took our first place in close combat action. Now we have nothing left to do than go to chill on the beach.

x386dev

Visit Valga for that one

zirexnn

We turn hostile when you are talking about religion

b0uncyfr0

You've gotta have a good salary to have fun here, its not cheap anymore. If its under 2000 net - i'd rethink living here for a long period.

TheDashingDrazma

If you NEED to spend a lot of money to have fun, you should seriously look into new hobbies

b0uncyfr0

You're not wrong there.

DJ_Maniakk

All I need is süütevedelikk

[deleted]

Yes, ensure you don't earn below average.

qountpaqula

Don't park your car on the sidewalk.

EstCaptainJames

Don't say hello say tere or else the KGB kidnapps you!

iloveburger

start drinking.

RaceAware1955

Start training your liver for heavy vodka drinking!

[deleted]

If you’re not white, avoid. If you are, don’t be gay.

Kaisa_is_short

>If you are, don’t be gay. Ups.

realmen420

Is racism really an every day life in Tallinn?

juneyourtech

No. There are Black and Brown people living in Tallinn, and you'll see them doing everyday stuff normally. I don't know what their percentage in numbers is, but you'll see at least a few every time you take a trip on public transport. There are many who are students in local universities, and they do food delivery via Bolt and Wolt. Some have families here, kids go to school, etc. There are Black Estonians, too, but they're no different from White Estonians in terms of fashion and mannerisms. Their numbers are small, though. There is some racism in Estonia. The most racist party is EKRE, which has been a coalition party in the two governments previous to the two Reform-led governments of Kaja Kallas. EKRE is currently in opposition.

[deleted]

If you’re not white there are a litany of micro and macro aggressions you’ll experience daily.

w33p33

Not sure where you go that you have so much daily issues as I haven't heard any such feedback from my friends at least in regards to macro agressions.

DJ_Maniakk

That's because you problaby live in the richer part of Tallinn

w33p33

Nope, I live in normal part of Tallinn. I've also spent time walking around with them at -mäe parts of the city. When it comes to macro agressions Tallinn is okay. With micro agressions quite often the issue is that people just have not had exposure or experience to such different cultures etc due to which they often just don't know better.

metasekvoia

Estonia is poor but expensive, the weather is cold and/or wet and/or dark, the food is bland, service is unfriendly, by 7 o'clock everything's dead, people are cold when sober and crazy when drunk. Attempts to speak our language are appreciated. Don't drink with the locals. Welcome.

SergioilPadrino

You sound Latvian... I am suspicious of you

BlocXpert88

🤣🤣🤣

Kosh_Ascadian

>the food is bland Strange. I think the food is great and I've eaten allover Europe. You get surprisingly high quality, tasty food in the randomest of places in Estonia.

rotipoeg

>Don't drink with the locals. He can try lmao

fancyfitty

If he can keep up

nublusi

As and Estonian, I can confirm that about half the things you said were completely true and the other half is completely wrong.

x386dev

Valka kodanik?

juneyourtech

If Estonia is so expensive, then it's not poor. The country simply doesn't have enough money to dote on absolutely everyone. There *are* poor people, too.

rihhar013

If you can speak elnglish quite good it will hel you a lot if not you are fucked.

tonyMFP

Avoid living in Tallinn. All the bad things you read in here are about Tallinn. Tartu is a much friendlier place. Or go even smaller and choose Viljandi or something. I think most of the people here need to change the people they surround themselves with. 1.Every little effort you make learning estonian goes a long way. 2. Need to be patient with estonians, because we warm up really slow. Once we are warm up, we are a blast. 3. With the wifi thing - with mobile data you get internet almost everywhere. Just get a decent deal or a topup. 4. Understand sarcasm. Most of what we say is sarcasm or some might say a joke. It may sound offensive, but mostly it is not. We needed sarcasm to live out the soviet union. 5. Have an open mind. Estonians tend to complain alot but deep inside we know that its a nice place to live. The ones who say otherwise need to go and try living abroad. Most of the complainers live in finland and can't see that they are the problem.

RobertSpringer

Estonians are both very curious about other people but they're also reserved, so if you want to strike a conversation with them you would probably have to be the one to initiate it. A very easy way to make friends with Estonians is to show interest into some of the more unique aspects of Estonia that you might not have in Latin America, Estonians from my experience enjoy talking to foreigners who want to learn about Estonia

Fun_Extension_2640

Hello, I also want some advice regarding the taxes in Estonia, I am using this [tool](https://www.kalkulaator.ee/en/salary-calculator) to calculate the taxes. But I am a bit confused about the Salary/Wage fund and Gross salary/Wage options. Can someone help me with which option should I select Thank you in advance

Automatic-Coconut909

Oh a good thing is to know Estonian even if not perfect if you say somthing like book good kinda Estonian we will understand and a good way to learn is by playing games or somthing like magic the ghatering in place like lorien but Estonians don't show feeling mostly so don't pushon buttons exsept if they are a good friend and do return the bottles for ten sentces

[deleted]

Why Estonia?

juneyourtech

Why not?

Login1990

Don't

groovycoyote

Hazte un favor y no vengas.

realmen420

¿Por?

krevko

Jokes aside on this topic, but he's got a point. People visiting Estonia for few days/weeks are happy with the experience, but almost everyone staying here long-term not so much (there have been many feedbacks and YT videos of this topic interviewing foreigners living here). Our culture is very foreign and perhaps even depressing to someone from Latin America. My neighbor is from Argentina, he said he loves it here because he felt like a foreign bacteria back in his home country. :) He calls himself a big introvert, to us he is like your average Estonian. Never looking you in the eye, staying quiet, etc :D <- Estonians do open up when they are drunk.

groovycoyote

My_Kox_Long

Best advice- don't come. You'd thank me later.

Axemic

Don't come!

canyoufixmyspacebar

Poor but expensive, cold, dark and damp, pending imminent Russian invasion, welcome!

Finnbalt

Learn some Russian. Don't touch Saku Originaal. Don't speak loudly on public transport. Don't initiate conversation with strangers outside of drinking establishments.

x386dev

You don't really need or want to learn Russian here, unless you want to live in Narva

juneyourtech

Learning Russian is okay, but not obligatory. The first and most important language to learn is Estonian.

nell57

Jesus, what are you talking about? The situation with news is like that in every country, I'd say ours is pretty decent even as government-funded ERRis very unbiased for example. No need to wear a knife on you. Estonians aren't really nationalistic, slightly patriotic but just slightly so. Religion is fine to talk about, but people might not relate much. I think you are exaggerating a loooot. Very safe pretty much everywhere etc. I know several friends from foreign countries and they're all here because they like it here. They've experienced no pointing even for having darker skin colour. The long dark winter and cold will catch you off guard, but you'll get used to the dark and the cold is not bad with the correct clothes.

qountpaqula

First of all, I think you're an idiot and you're also telling somebody from Latin America that OUR cities are dangerous at night
