it really should be enabled by default
there's nobody that would prefer it disabled
such a handy feature
EDIT:
there's nobody with a brain that would prefer it disabled
The fact they put the tab in front is a little annoying. I'm leaving it on for my first run through dlc, but probably flipping it off after that. Still a much needed feature though.
Honestly, I either long forgot or I just discovered that there's a "show blood" toggle. O.o I hope I'm not the only one that missed that. I blew through the settings exactly once for resolution and graphics and haven't really explored since then.
I didn't get that message? I also didn't get any message explaining the Scadutree upgrades, although I saw a tutorial pop-up on someone else's stream - and as I'm thinking about it, I'm remembering I turned off tutorials at some point, maybe that's why. Although tbh it'd just be another example of a setting they should switch for you with the DLC - I'm sure I'm not the only person who turned off tutorials for the main game after getting familiar with it, but who wants them back for new content
There's an perfume called the uplifting aromatic that takes 90 percent of the damage of the first hit you and surrounding players take, along with an attack buff! It's pretty sweet, useful before and during fights
It's good practice as the idea is "don't change someone's setup without asking."
But yeah so many people don't read. But hey this is why we got online discussions like this.
yes, because the recent items tab is the first tab. people have muscle memory to go into their inventories to get consumables. for me on KBM, when i click "esc" and then use my mouse to click on "inventory", im expecting important items like my physick flask, starlight shards and boluses to pop up and be accessible right away, but instead, what pops up is this recent items tab.
nearly all pvp'ers will be turning this feature off while invading/pvp'ing and its pretty likely that big time pve players like challenge/speed runners will turn this feature off when they start doing challenge/speed runs. basically anyone who has already finished a playthru or two and is playing in a way that requires speed and efficiency in the menu will be turning this off eventually.
if the "recent items" tab was simply not the first tab in the inventory, and was placed more near tabs like your key item or crafting mats tab, this would not be an issue and there would not be a real reason to disable it.
Yeah I turned on the tab, realized it would make me press more buttons to use consumables, and promptly turned it back off. It should be the last tab so that I can L1 into it, but it definitely shouldn't be the default tab that I see every time I open my inventory.
I assumed the toggle was built into the inventory screen somewhere, since that what it was referencing. I was going insane. Did not think to go into the game configuration settings to find it.
Mmh its a hard decision. We are launching a new dlc with tons of new things in it. Do we let people use the system the know and love so that they can focus on enjoying the content? Or improve their ui while cluttering the experience a bit.
I'll definitely turn it on but I can see the argument to not do it!
I personally got mine at a time when I was going through other popups and never spotted it.
I read about it elsewhere so I knew, but I can see others missing it completely.
How many other people got the "New Features" menu message
Hit start to close
Pulled up your inventory
And went
"Huh wait what where is the recent items tab"?!
I did. I for sure did that lololol XD
Thank you, I was going crazy trying to figure out if the item I just picked up was a talisman/crafting material/consumable every time I found something new.
just FYI - this feature is turned off by default because the "recent items" tab is first in your inventory.
a large percentage of ER players have muscle memory for going into their inventory, and expect the first page that pops up to be their consumables, with important stuff like physick flask and boluses right up top.
adding a new inventory tab that appears before your consumables tab totally ruins this. if it was on by default, there would be threads started by frustrated gamers who felt like they couldnt get to their physick flask or whatever during a heated boss fight.
fromsoft probably figures that its better to make players turn on a QoL feature than it is to just automatically make a change that significantly impacts the muscle memory players have developed.
Red flames… 🤗 I’m sure this is sarcasm but just in case, the blood off is mostly just your character and npcs/invaders. Don’t have to use bar of soap or touch grace to clean your dirty self off.
Ya I was gonna put a “is he stupid” at the end but couldn’t think of who to direct it at so just left it out and hoped people would get that I’m being sarcastic 😂
I just ran the game again (spent earlier today helping players beat Mogh), turned on these two features, and the game booted me saying "inappropriate activity detected" (can't say it is because of this, but it is the ONLY thing I've changed/altered in the game in the two years I've played it). Anyone else have this issue?
super useful, been using this to read the items descriptions. I never read them because it was boring to search trough all the inventory to find something that sometimes you don't even remember the name or image.
Elden Ring finally gives a QOL feature that's already in most games and then makes you set it manually.
I love this game, and I'm glad it's finally here, but man, this should have been put in the game before launch and set as default.
It’s funny bc when you first enter the game after the patch you get a big pop up in your face explaining exactly that
But people are so used to just skipping them lol
Then again it’s weird that it’s not just on by default and even has a toggle since it’s one of those 0 downside thngs
I was online yesterday and it was enabled by default. Today when the expansion was out it was disabled.
Pretty sure they changed it with the last update.
I was wondering why they didn't turn it on by default, then I realized how much I rely on muscle memory to pop runes. Now I have to get used to moving over a tab first, lol. Don't get why marking new items isn't on by default though
As a new player (played for 3 days now, explored most of the South except Caelid and Siofra), how come they still haven't added the comparison between equiped weapons/armor and the ones in shops?
The tab is annoying and cumbersome when I just want to menu for boluses and whatnot. I have no idea why they thought we'd want it to be the first tab. The mark feature is great though.

Thanks, was wondering why it wasn't showing
Glad I could give back!
Jolly cooperation!
Thanks mate, couldn't figure this one out lol
You missee the big warning message you have to click through when you logged jn?
I didn’t get one
There was no message for me
My game actually crashed during the first load… and during the first entry into the dlc. All good now though.
I read everything, never got anything about that.
I didn't get one.
AH! Thaaat explains it. thy!
it really should be enabled by default there's nobody that would prefer it disabled such a handy feature EDIT: there's nobody with a brain that would prefer it disabled
I'd prefer it disabled
The fact they put the tab in front is a little annoying. I'm leaving it on for my first run through dlc, but probably flipping it off after that. Still a much needed feature though.
I like being able to disable it.
Yes that's nice, but it'd be even nicer if it was enabled by default
Kept thinking I didn’t update somehow
Me too haha, discovered it when I was in the last inventory tab and started reading all the new "how to play" images.
Same exact thing for me lol
FFS, I was losing my mind trying to find "recent tab". Why did they do this...
Just another boss to beat.
Should it have an achievement trophy
With from you have to git gud even with settings menus
Odd decision for sure, but in a world where people are endlessly asking for toggles for every last minor setting, I have to respect it.
Theres a message that notifies you that there’s a toggle too!! Just after loading the game it tells you about the new hairs and the inventiry changes
seems like a couple of us missed it.
I just clicked through it thinking I already knew, then couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t showing up lol
Honestly, I either long forgot or I just discovered that there's a "show blood" toggle. O.o I hope I'm not the only one that missed that. I blew through the settings exactly once for resolution and graphics and haven't really explored since then.
well i read that and assumed it was toggled "ON" by default.
I didn't get that message? I also didn't get any message explaining the Scadutree upgrades, although I saw a tutorial pop-up on someone else's stream - and as I'm thinking about it, I'm remembering I turned off tutorials at some point, maybe that's why. I hammer my x button until I can start walking
Finally all the Arteria Leaves get their moment
The hit immunity fragrance uses arteria leaf, I use every one I come across!
NGL Im like 700 hrs in and have no idea what half those words mean
There's an perfume called the uplifting aromatic that takes 90 percent of the damage of the first hit you and surrounding players take, along with an attack buff! It's pretty sweet, useful before and during fights
The game tells you this, but idk why it's not on by default
It's good practice as the idea is "don't change someone's setup without asking." But yeah so many people don't read. But hey this is why we got online discussions like this.
Meanwhile they sleeper enabled Ray Tracing for me which tanked my performance :(
Huh? That setting stayed off for me and I have a 3080. Must have been something strange.
Yeah but in this case would anyone actually NOT want a recent items tab?
yes, because the recent items tab is the first tab. people have muscle memory to go into their inventories to get consumables. for me on KBM, when i click "esc" and then use my mouse to click on "inventory", im expecting important items like my physick flask, starlight shards and boluses to pop up and be accessible right away, but instead, what pops up is this recent items tab. nearly all pvp'ers will be turning this feature off while invading/pvp'ing and its pretty likely that big time pve players like challenge/speed runners will turn this feature off when they start doing challenge/speed runs. basically anyone who has already finished a playthru or two and is playing in a way that requires speed and efficiency in the menu will be turning this off eventually. if the "recent items" tab was simply not the first tab in the inventory, and was placed more near tabs like your key item or crafting mats tab, this would not be an issue and there would not be a real reason to disable it.
Great points

Yes. I'm using it for my first run of the DLC so I can check out the new items easily, but I will 100% disable it after that.
Speedrunners and pvp'ers. Most people who have sunk in 1000+ hrs in the game may not want this feature. Muscle memory, speed of interaction, etc.
The game didn't tell me this at all because I had tutorials off like many others.
I assumed the toggle was built into the inventory screen somewhere, since that what it was referencing. I was going insane. Did not think to go into the game configuration settings to find it.
Ah Fromsoft! Such great game designers but so terrible at UI
Ah FromSoft players! So good at beating hard bosses but so terrible at reading.
This change is absolutely massive, game got like 7.128% more enjoyable for me
It really does help, especially after the Lore deep dive I've been in the past few months.
Oh, that is lame. Definitely should be on by default.
Agreed.
Mmh its a hard decision. We are launching a new dlc with tons of new things in it. Do we let people use the system the know and love so that they can focus on enjoying the content? Or improve their ui while cluttering the experience a bit. I'll definitely turn it on but I can see the argument to not do it!
I'd just put in a popup that lets players know about these new settings ...which the game did.
I personally got mine at a time when I was going through other popups and never spotted it. I read about it elsewhere so I knew, but I can see others missing it completely.
why implement QOL when its turned off by default
Perfect. Now I'll have a tab to show me all the smithing stone 2s and 3s I keep finding in this godforsaken DLC...
It literally says you have to turn it on in the first tutorial text about this new feature.
dude I have defeated the elden beast. why would I read a tutorial in the endgame ??
Display blood off? ☠️💀
It's back on now. You should see how much my auto targeting changes because of my controller spaz.
its still on ? right? just checking
Was wondering why this shit wasnt showing up. Doing god's work you are.
Thanks OP. Was scratching my head trying to figure out where the tab was.
I thought I was going crazy
OHHHHH. That’s why! Thanks for this PSA!
Erdtree Blessings upon you!
THANK YOU!
Thank you, THANK YOU
Good shit op, was wondering why it wasn't working
Bro you are a god damn lifesaver
How many other people got the "New Features" menu message Hit start to close Pulled up your inventory And went "Huh wait what where is the recent items tab"?! I did. I for sure did that lololol XD
Me every time I turn on the game so far, wondering if they just bungled the patch (like when I had to fully restart my PS5 just to play it).
💡Thanks
Omg thank you, this was driving me mad.
Oh ffs... Thank you OP.
Well, that explains why i wasn't seeing it, thanks.
Well that would have been good to know last night. Thank you
Serves you right for now being on the subreddit 10 hours ago? Not like there's anything else you could have been doing. /s.
Got hard stuck in a certain dlc boss and went to bed in shame.
Wow! What DLC?
🫡
I'm 90% there was a popup that said this, but also I buttoned too fast and didn't read it properly.
There is a popup upon launching for the first time that says this.
Thank you - I thought it was bugged.
Thank you, I was going crazy trying to figure out if the item I just picked up was a talisman/crafting material/consumable every time I found something new.
My god that was driving me fucking crazy!!! Thank you. Why didnt they mention that in the tooltip xD
Thanks! This was driving me crazy last night trying to find a new weapon or armor I got.
just FYI - this feature is turned off by default because the "recent items" tab is first in your inventory. a large percentage of ER players have muscle memory for going into their inventory, and expect the first page that pops up to be their consumables, with important stuff like physick flask and boluses right up top. adding a new inventory tab that appears before your consumables tab totally ruins this. if it was on by default, there would be threads started by frustrated gamers who felt like they couldnt get to their physick flask or whatever during a heated boss fight. fromsoft probably figures that its better to make players turn on a QoL feature than it is to just automatically make a change that significantly impacts the muscle memory players have developed.
Wow thank you
Thank you so much, I had no idea why my new stuff wasn’t marked
Bless you Tarnished
Thank you, was so confused.
Thank you! Thought my game was busted after the patch.
Thank you \~ unsung hero!
God bless you
The first actual informational post in awhile lmao thank you
What happens during the mogh fight if you have display blood off? What do his blood flame attacks look like?
Lol, how'd that get turned off? Thanks for the heads up.
Yea it took me 2 hours to figure this out. Good PSA.
Also PSA: Trash mobs WILL murder you without remorse if you dare to step foot into the Shadowlands on NG+. Rivers of Bloodtears 😅
I figured that out after i started to pick up new stuff amd realized it was not marked.
WHAT? I thought it was bugged....
Quick warning Turing off blood does not work vs bleed dmg.
Really? Damn!
I just ran the game again (spent earlier today helping players beat Mogh), turned on these two features, and the game booted me saying "inappropriate activity detected" (can't say it is because of this, but it is the ONLY thing I've changed/altered in the game in the two years I've played it). It’s a semi common bug happening atm seems they are aware and working on a hot fix. I got it as well on my steam deck right after installing the dlc.
This is awesome
What the fuxk haha
They are so good. Did not utilize them before.
This is exactly the kind of QoL features that I want
Fromsoft: *Implements QOL improvements in their game* Also Fromsoft: *But not in an easy way*
Yeah this was pissing me off until i decided to check settings
super useful, been using this to read the items descriptions. I never read them because it was boring to search trough all the inventory to find something that sometimes you don't even remember the name or image.
not defaulting this to ON is absolutely nasty work
I just wish it showed up in the equipment screen and not the inventory screen. Or have a way to sort by newest item in the equipment screen
I've turned it on, and it is great, but it has ruined my muscle memory when I want to quickly use an item that isn't in my quick slot bar.
Elden Ring finally gives a QOL feature that's already in most games and then makes you set it manually. I love this game, and I'm glad it's finally here, but man, this should have been put in the game before launch and set as default.
Even the new features on From Soft games require instructions!

souls game, always make it the hard way
That’s weird why they wouldn’t just have the features directly added and not a toggle.
it's soooooooooo good
It's really stupid that a new feature like this isn't enabled by default. Thanks for the heads up.
I was online yesterday and it was enabled by default. Today when the expansion was out it was disabled. Pretty sure they changed it with the last update.
And yet still no toggle for PlayStation or Xbox glyphs when playing with controller.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh
LOL it wouldn't be a From Soft game if it wasn't convoluted and required checking reddit
I was wondering why they didn't turn it on by default, then I realized how much I rely on muscle memory to pop runes. Now I have to get used to moving over a tab first, lol. Don't get why marking new items isn't on by default though

You have display blood turned off? Why? It’s the bloody best part of whacking an enemy
I don't know why they didn't just enable this by default. Really stupid lol
Thank you! I was actually raging more at not being able to find new items in my inventory more than any deaths I was taking in Erdtree 😂
lol wish I knew this sooner, I just vaulted all my old shit to reduce clutter to find new stuff
Took me way too long to find this setting. I love the "Recent Items" tab, it makes reading the item lore so much more convenient.
I thought my game was bugged and it wasn't working right! Glad to see it's not!

Oh my god thank you. I thought I was going crazy
This is so annoying lol
Dumb, should have been On from the start
Thank you, I thought something was bugged.
