and we're all still waiting for our crew members to appear in our cockpits. Frontier have never answered lots of heavily upvoted threads on the forums asking for a simple rendering of our AI crew pilot in the empty seats of our cockpits. they managed it for Apex pilots, why not our crew?
bit too much work for them I think as it's not a Galnet article.
exactly, the pilot only gets in physical trouble if you get killed as well,
if just the fighter goes sown, no harm done, thats why he/she can just launch another one.
Plus they just say "fighter is lost, commander" rather than... Nothing.
Also speaking of crew voice lines why do some of them call female characters Sir when Commander/Captain literally is in use?
There's this stupid idea that Naval Officers are always to be addressed as Sir and from my understanding its because of a mistake in a Star Trek script where Captain Kirk referred to Nyota Uhura as "Mister Uhura".
Ive never seen it happen in reality, I was in the Army and in my branch (MI) there were a lot of female officers, every single one of them would have bitched at you or said something snarky ("Do I look like a Sir to you Miss?") if you'd have called them sir.
They don't in the US Navy or Army either. I know the same goes with the Aussies, Canadians and Kiwis as well. No anglosphere Military formation, at least none of the Five Eyes, does that as far as I'm aware.
I wouldn't mind new ships, but there are already a ton. Many that don't get much usage already. Unless a new ship has unique specs and abilities beyond adding the same old modules like other other ships, then it isn't going to expand the game much on its own. More interesting modules and gameplay to go with it will do that.
What will the Panther Clipper do that the other big 4 don't do? We don't have very much info on it or what its specs would be in ED. We'll end up having yet another big ship but the same activities.
Probably Isinona's one, he was the highest profile Asp Scout user I know od, and he's not been seen since 3.3, but even before that, he'd moved on to other ships.
>Many that don't get much usage already.
That's in part because some ships exist purely to be inferior versions of another ship or simply to be outclassed in their size bracket. Has more to do with balance and tiering IMO than a function of the number of ships.
I dunno
For me it's just the knowledge that i COULD get x ship if i ever wanted one
I love collecting stuff in games and i like to have variety so the more the better imo
Same goes for weapons
Id love to have a vast variety of guns even if they all would do the same but maybe im in the mood of playing with another one so i can just choose that one
That's why i heavily mod rimworld for example. I dont use everything in those mods but i know i could and if i ever feel like using it its there
I too would like to have a bit more ships from Frontier II era, but the potential is not measured in feature creep.
Yes, it has been some time since the game received ships, 2 years ago with the fleet carriers. But Frontier is not CIG with 5 studios where they churn out new batch of ships with every update.
Also, what everybody forgets about Panther Clipper:
*What do you want to do within current gameplay loops with a ship which can't land on any landing area?*
Sure if they could land, they would be ideal to transport huge cargos of commodities -they would be ideal for community goals. A ship which is slow as hell and not fun to fly in the old configurations. DoN't forget in old Elite games where Panther Clipper comes from, not only the ship had a crew, but you were able to speed up time (you had to speed up time) bc the Panther was the slowest most vulnerable ship in the game. A beached whale.
Btw we have Fleet Carriers which serve the same purpose.
>Btw we have Fleet Carriers which serve the same purpose.
Fleet carriers are at last check a 5B+ buy in, can't be directly polited and require upkeep costs. Owning an outpost with a jumpsrive isn't really a substitute for having a ship imo. But you could argue current haulers are good enough.
I absolutely hear you, and you know what? You are right through and through.
But...
Yes Elite Dangerous can "invent" a new Panther Clipper, tailored to this game's very own system. However The Panther Clipper we know - at least the version which existed in previous Elite games - are huge, no agility, crewed and they have immense cargo space.
This is what I meant by the purpose - In Elite Dangerous commanders utilize their Fleet Carrier's cargo space to transport big hauls of commodities.
I rush to add would be nice to see the Panther again but in ED I'd love if it had a brand new gameplay loop which doesn't exist yet. And maybe other ships could come first, like Imperial Explorer a medium ship.
No, we don't. Medium pad high capacity low cost dedicated hauler for one. Instead we're using multiroles for the job. Shield based turret centric large ship would be nice too. Something like the T10 forgoing huges for more larges but also with a decent shield capacity, and a proper distributor would be nice too. An imperial counterpart with the firepower versatility of the gunship would be cool as well. Preferably also medium.
That's just ideas with zero real time spent dedicated to thinking of gaps. If we tried I'm sure we could find more.
I think new gameplay mechanics are in order. As a game designer myself, I know which one is actually worth more. Designing a new ship is actually easy as hell and the outcome isn't going to really drive players to want to spend more time in the game.
Something like being able to exit your ship while the ship is in space is *much* more valuable and there are a lot of new gameplay opportunities for something as simple as that.
What I wouldn't give for NSP exo-bio during EVA, or options to do manual ship repairs during EVA if your ship lacks an AFMU, or the ability to poke around drifting shipwrecks while salvaging.
>The story of the Type 8 was a tragic incident, a series of oversights and unfortunate events. The Type 8 prototype was stolen off the platform during its unveiling. Lakon attempted to try and recapture it intact and notified the station flight control. Unfortunately, flight control only heard "theft" and "criminal" and instituted plan "Fire all weapons!". Luckily, the Type 8 and its new shield system were too powerful and shrugged off everything the station could throw at it. Unfortunately, the thief wasn't entirely aware of this and engaged thrusters. That is when a prime oversight became apparent to all. The Type 8 was larger than the mail slot. During the Type 8's development process, no one had bothered to actually measure it. The prototype, along with Lakon's future, smashed into the station entryway, destroying itself and at least 20 Sidewinders and a Cobra that were trying to squeeze through at the same time. It was truly a tragedy for all involved.
FDev should make the Panther Clipper, but not offer it for sale to CMDRs. It should advertise on open comms like cruise ships, it should get stuck in mail slots like Belugas, and it should be the "reward" for making the Hutton Orbital run.
I posted about the Panther [over three years ago.](https://reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/bxwm6o/its_been_256_newsletters_since_the_last_time_the/)
Newsletter 13 was the last time it was mentioned. It's never coming.
This just in, spaceship game in active development fails to release a new spaceship in 4 years. Standards plummet until salivation occurs at the thought of the same overhyped ship being mentioned in flavor text so bland Gordon Ramsay wouldn't even let your mom eat it.
More at 11.
Why is everyone so excited about the possibility of a new ship that will most likely, in the name of balance, have the flight characteristics of a small moon? Presuming it's going to be the 2000+ Tonne of cargo carrying behemoth it's forebarer was, to balance it in any shape manner or means, it's going to have 1/3rd the turn rate of a cutter, a 1/3rd of the speed of a cutter, and 3x the drift of a cutter? OMFG, I think I'd rather try swimming between starports than fly that mofo. \[tip: no matter how good your space suit is, swimming in the vacuum of space doesn't work\]
The Panther has been hinted at for years, I don’t think it’s ever going to arrive.
I’d rather see some of the more interesting ships like the Merlin, Mantis, Skeet and Wyvern
Not *another* and not really a teaser. This text has been around since crew was first added.

Problem being is what happens when you tell em to launch in a ship?
It's telepresence so they don't actually fly it from the slf

Agree. Female Naval officers are not addressed as Sir in the Royal Navy - my wife was one. People only called her "Sir" when they were panicking:
They don't in the US Navy or Army either. I know the same goes with the Aussies, Canadians and Kiwis as well. No anglosphere Military formation, at least none of the Five Eyes, does that as far as I'm aware.
US Navy here - They’re called Ma’am here.
i imagine that slf are remotely controlled as you can freely switch between piloting your slf and your mothership
I was under the impression the ships are remote as when they get destroyed the "up link failed"
You may be right!
Just re-use the animation of a pilot getting out of their seat to disembark. Oh wait....
Its just another little thing that makes me wish there were more ships - there's so much unrealised potential that's been sitting there for years

not in mine, i use them for target practice :P
In my hangar, because yes, I actually use one. Regularly. On multiple accounts. For different purposes

explorca gang checking in
God I loved my explorca. Upgraded to a Cutter but damn do I miss the little ding whenever I boosted
One thing I saw before, was "What if it had 1. the most optional modules, and 2. half of them were cargo rack only"
>Many that don't get much usage already. That's in part because some ships exist purely to be inferior versions of another ship or simply to be outclassed in their size bracket. Has more to do with balance and tiering IMO than a function of the number of ships.

His real rank is absolutely harmless.
Screw the panther clipper, we need the type 8!
It has the lowest mass, lowest heat signature, and is the only ship with 0 hardpoints! ;)
it's quite literally just a brick
A brick with some fireworks taped to it

Why does that read like something Douglas Adams would write

*or it should be another exclusive preorder like the last one /s*
It fascinates me that they made it a pre-order exclusive. Although, I respect them not lying to those who did pre-order, kept it exclusive.
What did they make preorder exclusive?

It's been YEARS. I need a new ship to get my hands on!
We’ll need a couple at least or we’ll suddenly see everyone flying the same probably snake named ship
That would only highlight how little we gotten in the ship department for the last few years.
Ship named snake:
Yeah thats been in for years.
If they'll add the panther, that would get me back I to the game.
I don't believe we'll ever see this ship in game
to me it indicates a discontinued ship line more than one that may or (more likely) may not be coming to game sometime... .
Irene Hess is ugly
Her wife left her after all..

Indeed, a culinary tragedy
Are there _any_ meaningful updates planned for this game?
Haven’t had a new ship in over 4 years lol

I liek to fly chonker
Been there for six years.
I'm more interested in why this guy's wife left him. Did he not allow her onboard?
> Spent my time flying a Panther Clipper LX > That one was exciting job *Presses X to doubt*
The Panther has been hinted at for years, I don’t think it’s ever going to arrive. I’d rather see some of the more interesting ships like the Merlin, Mantis, Skeet and Wyvern
I want it.
