I did my senior thesis on it 22 years ago; the book and the film. One of the most wonderful research studies of my life. To this day it’s still one of the few VHS I’ve kept around
That scene in the book where McMurphy tries to lift that huge thing. Probably the best scene I have ever read in a book.
“I tried, Goddamit. At least I did that.”
I finally watched this a week or so ago. I was so intrigued by the little guy - his face, his grin, and how good hearted he seemed. And I recall seeing him in a shot where everyone's standing and he is so clearly really really small. I couldn't place it but I literally thought - wow who is this guy, he's like Dany Devito proportions?
Credits hit and I felt like an idiot.
“They’ve been charging my batteries, feeding me 10,000 watts a day. Next woman I lay with is gonna light up like a slot machine and pay out in silver dollars.”
It wasn't until recently that I found out that Martini props himself up on the chair when tensions rise due to his trauma as a war pilot that had his plane crash into water. Absolutely brilliant.
Someone said to me recently the movie is actually about the ideological differences between democracy and communism. Nurse Ratched symbolizing communism.... Been years since I've watched it and never once saw it in that way. Need to watch again. Loved this very special movie though.
It’s been a bit since I’ve seen the movie but I don’t recall the source material being that way. Ken Kesey was pretty progressive and a significant player in the Beatnik era, so I just don’t see him defending capitalism. Especially when his next work, Sometimes a Great Notion, at least tangentially, takes a dig at the non-union worker main characters.
Dare I say, you're looking with the wrong eyes. Do you think McMurphy was written as a shining beacon for democracy?
"Kesey argued this through the use of the characters in the novel. Nurse Ratched was a character who symbolized the communist rule in Russia, and she displayed absolute power over the patients in the ward. She was depicted as what was wrong with society, and the patients feared her as the Americans feared communists."
Anyway, I'm going to watch it again this weekend to see for myself. Have a good one.
More than just the economic aspects of Capitalism and Communism it represent the ideological differences between a free society and a controlled one, it could be true even in a capitalist society that over control and observation destroys its society. The hyper control of communism begets anxiety, stagnation, violence, insanity. Where as, the hyper freedom from an unregulated mindset society results in happiness and joy. They’re constantly observed from the glass, never truly free. Think of the Baseball and basketball scenes, two specific nods to American Capitalism; TV, and Going to Sportsball games for fun. He doesn’t take them to an NBA game, they don’t even go to a stadium where the “profits of capitalism “ are on full display. No, he takes them to a simple court to play a pick up game, he doesn’t take them to Yankee stadium, he can’t even turn on the TV, he simply makes up the excitement of a game radio style and everyone becomes engaged with excitement.
It’s my favorite depiction of the Penguin. Same with Catwoman. I don’t like Penguin as some generic mobster like in The Batman or just a guy with bird themed crimes. Many batman villains have a lot of character and are very weird. Burtons version of Penguin elevated Penguin as a character. I honestly don’t think any of us would even care about Penguin without DeVito as the Penguin. He went from forgettable Batman villain to like top 5 most memorable and liked. I’d say that’s the only reason The Batman even had Penguin as a character
I feel like sharing tonight.
Mum and dad had the movie on a VHR, so I saw the movie 50+ times when I was a kid. There are so many songs from the movie which a keep on singing to myself every now and then, but the one I have always adored is “I’ll die for this dance”. For whatever reason, I knew that would be the song for my wedding, but I never actually believed it will happen, only because women, It’s their dream day. Fast forward, couple of years ago, I’ve married my best friend of 16 years and we danced together as a family with our first daughter to the song I always wanted. So yea, Twins would always be the best De Vito movie for me.
Yep. Icky Kevin Spacey is so damn infuriatingly good in that film. His smirk during the Lana Turner scene and his Rollo scene with Dudley are incredible - >!I swear you can see the light go out in his eyes as he dies)!<
Her mother was also a huge fan of the book so being able to see her daughter play the main character of the book she loved before she dies makes this man a damn saint.
I recently heard Mara Wilson (the titular Matilda) on a podcast and the host was asking her about being a child star. He asked something along the lines of "famous actors get all kinds of perks like getting free alcohol, getting into exclusive restaurants and clubs, free designer clothes. What are the equivalent perks for a famous child actor?" And Mara Wilson said "well my version of that was Danny DeVito taking me to F.A.O Schwarz and saying I could get as many Barbies as I wanted"
If you are hopelessly addicted to Bette Midler, as I am, you need to watch Ruthless People, Down And Out In Beverly Hills, and Outrageous Fortune all in a row. 12 year old me almost died of sheer ecstasy.
Danny DeVito is good too.
In this picture he looks less like himself and more like the extremely shady president of a South American country that’s about to fill his pockets with cash by hosting a sports event there that the country cannot afford whatsoever…
I'd say it's a representation of Renaissance Man. That's an extremely weird and bad photoshop, and not a shot from the actual film.
In all seriousness, I have a huge soft spot for that movie. We used to watch it all the time when I was a kid. And I still use "This above all: to thine own self be true" when I teach Shakespeare.
Was hoping someone would say this. Pretty cheesy movie but had some great lines.
"What would you be willing to do?" - employment line
"If you give me a check, I'd be willing to cash it ' - Devito
Best movie he’s ever been in. One flew over the cuckoo’s nest.
Best Danny Devito performance Batman Returns
My personal favorite film Hercules. Odysseus Perseus lot a yusses.
One Flew over the cuckoo’s nest.
If we need a starring performance: Renaissance Man or Twins. I would say Batman Returns, but I would imagine he’s in a supporting role there as well.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Phenomenal cast, phenomenal movie, phenomenal book.

I bet a dime
“They’ve been charging my batteries, feeding me 10,000 watts a day. Next woman I lay with is gonna light up like a slot machine and pay out in silver dollars.”
Hit me. Hit me.
This is not a dime, Martini. THIS is a dime. You break in half, you don’t get two nickels, you get shit. We’re trying to smoke em, you understand?
When I was a kid I’d go around saying this. Not many people got it but it still gave me great joy.
It wasn't until recently that I found out that Martini props himself up on the chair when tensions rise due to his trauma as a war pilot that had his plane crash into water. Absolutely brilliant.
I watched this recently for the first time. It took me until halfway through the film before I realised that was him
Someone said to me recently the movie is actually about the ideological differences between democracy and communism. Nurse Ratched symbolizing communism.... Been years since I've watched it and never once saw it in that way. Need to watch again. Loved this very special movie though.

Agreed
Hit me
Just bought a house like 4 blocks from that hospital so naturally everyone who comes to my house has to watch the movie and go check it out
Batman returns
Tied with or maybe even beats Heath Ledger's Joker.
Not even close. Wouldn't even beat the baby in Look Who's Talking Too. Its just the best "movie" that comes to mind when i see him.
No it’s a pretty great performance
Agreed hes a great actor and his penguin was phenomenal, the speech to the penguins was legendary.
His penguin had me utterly disgusted. Idk if that’s what cobblepot is supposed to be like but man those stained pants and the raw fish was brutal.

“Yeah, I opened the door, I thought I was lookin’ in the mirror!”
“Now there is a man with a lot on his mind.”
I feel like sharing tonight. Mum and dad had the movie on a VHR, so I saw the movie 50+ times when I was a kid. This was such a great film.
God I love that flick.
Yep. Icky Kevin Spacey is so damn infuriatingly good in that film. His smirk during the Lana Turner scene and his Rollo scene with Dudley are incredible - >!I swear you can see the light go out in his eyes as he dies)!<
Matilda
[удалено]
So many great roles played by this man, and this is definitely one of my top 5 of them. He nailed it!
the right answer
Bonus points for him also directing that movie 👍🏻
And privately screening it for the little girl’s mother who was about to die of cancer. The man is a class act.
Her mother was also a huge fan of the book so being able to see her daughter play the main character of the book she loved before she dies makes this man a damn saint.
And I’m pretty sure he took care of the actress while her mom was sick..
Saint
He's basically the new Betty White... him or Dolly...
I recently heard Mara Wilson (the titular Matilda) on a podcast and the host was asking her about being a child star. Death To Smoochy
Once you get the money, you the the power. Once you get the power, you can have Smootchy go out there with a dildo strapped to his forehead.
SAVE THE RAINBOW! SAVE THE RAINBOW!
i love this movie. not a super popular opinion to hold. don’t think it’s devito’s best but it’s a great flick.
Oh I definitely think it’s one of Robin’s best but I love that Devito directed it

Ruthless People (1986)
This movie is hysterical…
Peak 80s comedy right here.
I had to ask my dad to explain the easy come, easy go joke to me after we watched it. I don’t think he would have agreed with you. 😂😂
This is the one. “His money. Her money. It’s my money! I hadda live with her all these years. I hate the way she licks stamps!!!”
Finally….”The bitch blabbed.”
I can’t believe this is so far down. He was amazing in it.
Muffy, meet Adolf. Adolf, EAT MUFFY!

If you are hopelessly addicted to Bette Midler, as I am, you need to watch Ruthless People, Down And Out In Beverly Hills, and Outrageous Fortune all in a row. 12 year old me almost died of sheer ecstasy. Danny DeVito is good too.
Always sunny, never has anyone stooped to such lows
So, anyways, I start stooping
Twins
His best movie as a major character was Romancing the Stone. The best movie he was in was One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
“Well what do you think I’m gonna do Ira, go up and introduce myself to every cop in the Pueblo???”
Ah damn the doobie brothers broke up
*throws a huge brick of weed on the fire* "Now that's what i call a campfire!"
I think I preferred him in Jewel of The Nile *slightly* more than Romancing The Stone
Throw Mama From the Train
Owen loves his Mama
Hoffa, The War of the Roses, Other Peoples Money, Renaissance Man, Junior, Get Shorty.
Shouldn't have needed to scroll so far to see the first mention of Hoffa. Great movie
Hard agree. Great movie.
In this picture he looks less like himself and more like the extremely shady president of a South American country that’s about to fill his pockets with cash by hosting a sports event there that the country cannot afford whatsoever…
No, this is Renaissance Man. Good little military drama about being a teacher and a better person.
Basically, Dangerous Minds set at Ft. Jackson in SC with Devito playing the Michelle Pfeiffer role, but sexier?!?
He seems much taller in this picture
Twins

The title pic is certainly the winner! And I ain’t no Ox Moron!
I had to scroll too far for the best answer
The St. Crispin’s day speech in this movie always gets me. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UzIyExlEcyk
Was hoping someone would say this. Pretty cheesy movie but had some great lines. "What would you be willing to do?" - employment line "If you give me a check, I'd be willing to cash it ' - Devito
