They kissed around the 200k mark, but it took another 100k or so for them to agree to try a relationship. But the romance was not the main focus of the story.
Mine's still a WIP, and it's a bit complicated, because they've been a couple once, but got separated before my fic started, and are now trying to get back together again.
Anyway, their "first kiss" happened about 90k words into the fic, while they were on some sort of undercover mission. But the FMC, who initiated it, claimed that it was just business, a decoy so their cover wouldn't be blown. After about 140k words, they've come to the agreement that they want to see if the old feelings are still there, but at the same time they want to take it slow, and give each other time.
I've still got some writing to do, but I guess it will be at about 180k-200k words that they are finally back together, and from there I'll have a few chapters left to wrap the story up.
The last one that managed that far was around 50K. They went on a date (that was the payment they agreed on after a mission) and kissed.
The current one I'm writing. Haha. Ha. I'm not that far right now. Around 100K words and they both have absolutely no clue if they like each other or whatever. After around 200K one side will fall in love. After around 300K there will be a love confession going straight to the trash bin.
I guess I can say, after around 500K they will start to explore those feelings in earnest and, GUESS WHAT!, there will be some touching here and there in form of shy kisses, handholding, sweet words straight from the candy fabric, and after arounf 650K veeeeeeerrryyyy long words, they finally start dating and being the sweetest to each other. Worry not. Slow Burn? I got your back (and drown in misery)\~
Uhhhh they kissed by accident at \~120k words, but that was one of them being drunk and kissing the other. The romance was a major part of the story but there was a lot of relationship building to get to the point where they realize their feelings for each other.
They get together at \~400k words. Now the story involves seeing them supporting each other and developing their romantic relationship!
Mine get together at around the 50k mark. Granted, my fic is on the shorter side (about 120k in total), and there's still some plot and relationship drama after they get together.
depends on the fic. on my "shorter" fics (still pretty long compared to the average) the couple takes the first step around the 50% mark. but usually that's only the first kiss, there is still a lot of back and forth until they agree to be in a relationship towards the end.
i would think there is no minimum word count for what qualifies as a slow burn, as there are two interpretations for the category. either it takes a long time (long word count) for the couple to get together or it takes a long time within the story. (story spanning many years)
Well, uh... they first met at 25k words and the male lead has just realized he has feelings for her at 75k...
To be fair, romance is only the secondary focus of my story.
mine's a wip, and they get together in chapter 25 of 45, but there's still plot after because it's not the main focus
I feel sorry for them bc they don't even get a happy ending
I'm not going to answer this because I'm not 100% sure yet (I'm only 3 chapters and 16,000+ words in) but I think I'm going to have them ALMOST kiss around the time season 2 ends (it's super weird because I started in the middle of season 2 and I'm going to have around 10 chapters for every season of the show/year) so at around 55,000 words but not actually get together until 110,000 words, though there will be something ... else that goes on with them during that time LOL
I'm working on something that... kinda resembles a slow burn if you squint just right. The characters are engaged in a Fae battle of wills and wits, wherein if the heroine lets herself be seduced, she loses the game and remains on the other side with him forever. There's some making out and petting, but it's a back-and-forth tug-o-war.
so both of my fics have other things going on besides the slow burn. in one, they kiss somewhere around 290K and get together shortly after that. the fic is 304k so it basically ends once they have their first official date and wrap up the other plot stuff. but there was a lot of romantic interactions and "not-dates" happening before all that, starting maybe a little after halfway into the fic.
the other fic they get together around 115k, go on a couple of dates, attempt a kiss that doesn't go well, and then a whole bunch of other stuff happens that puts their relationship on a back burner for a long time. They officially kiss for the first time around 519K lmao. and they still haven't been on any more dates that involve actually leaving the apartment (there's trauma involved tho). currently the fic is 615K and not done or posted yet and I'm actually in the middle of rewriting it, soooo yeah.
Probably somewhere between between 150k-170k. They kissed in chapter 40 (currently 65 chapters but not done). But they had had a couple close calls as early as chapter 25.Â
To be fair, I'm writing a Naruto canon divergent fic and started back at the beginning. So Chapter 20 was the time skip and around the 100,000 word mark. So kind of weird to do it when they're all 12/13/14.
I cheated and gave both of them another relationship first to develop as characters and eventually break up.
Also they have sex *before* kissing and acknowledging their feelings.
In one fic, the first kiss was at 198k words, in the other around 128k. In that first fic, the relationship wasn't complete until 280k words in because it was a triad. The fic itself ended at 461k. The second fic is ongoing but will end at around 200k, I think. In both cases, though, the stories were more 'adventure with romance' than 'pure romance' though.
It was a platonic slowburn, but 150k words for the idiots to finally realize they were friends. They're still having adventures together 150k words later!
Edit: It took so long because of trauma and society expectations. And because it's a slice of life, so EVERYTHING takes a long time.
I'm still writing it, but I'm 80k words in and probably about 1/3 of the way to the first kiss, which isn't even when they admit their feelings. They both back off and there's probably gonna be another 60k after that before they stop being idiots (briefly).

Plot heavy slowburns 🤝 It's good to know my original estimation of ~200k at kiss isn't actually that far off the mark hahaha
This makes me feel a lot better about my slow burn.
When your story is the length of half the Percy Jackson Books
Sadly this particular book is the length of the Harry Potter series and is still going. o.o
I'm at 110k words and they haven't even held hands. Just tinkering with the idea of each other.
Around 180k for a kiss...*on the* ***cheek*** for one story.
I would never subject my readers to such cruelty. All three of them would lodge much protest at such maltreatment.
Reeee let them tongue let them tongue the fandom cried

Christ, I dunno. It's still a wip, but it happens at the end of the first fic.

So ... had to break out the calculator ...618,000. Over about a dozen stories. The whole series runs 825k, so about the 3/4 point.

52k until they realized their feelings and hold hands

Mine got together at the ~100k point out of a 166k fic!

They got together at the 30k mark in one of my stories. Another the main ship got together at the 40k mark.
Technically the chapter still isn't posted, but it's around 350k that my dummies admit their feelings. But they only became friends at around 100k.

700k kiss đź’€ they verbally edged each other for 400k tho soooooooo
