I once worked in a school district with two administrators who were friends. One (admin a) was not from the US and grew up going to night clubs and such in her country, apparently she met her adult husband that way when she was a teenager (15 years old).
He’s rich, they’ve been together decades now, she’s (outwardly) very happy. I think it’s messed up, but not something I’m going to say anything about. What bothered me though was that I learned all this from admin b, who saw absolutely nothing wrong with any of it. She said her friend was mature, things were different then/there, just a lot of common excuses. Both of these women were highly educated, specialists in working with young people and in leadership positions in schools full of young girls. I worked directly with teen girls at the time and I was SO HORRIFIED that women in their position had that attitude. But to them it was normal, just the way they grew up, I guess.
I’ve noticed this in my own family. My feminist mom was either 17 or 18 when she started dating my father who was 9 years older than her and possibly knew her for years beforehand. They were very happy and my dad treated my mom well but the older I get the more I realize how fucking weird it is.
The age of consent argument makes me want to jump out a window because it’s always used as a dumbass gotcha moment like yes congratulations you are technically legally correct and as we all know legally and morally are always the same and never diverge…. 🫠 but now we know you or those you support are still interested in teenagers. So what now?
