I don't know what on earth that's supposed to be. But it sure does look Finnish.
Please do not let any school lunchladies see this they will get ideas for sure.
Lohikeitto (I added noodles) (soup made of potato, carrot, & butter sauteed leek boiled in fish stock (homemade) then simmered with salmon & cream, allspice, dill, black pepper, & salt)
Karjalanpiirakka (sliced) (crust (rye flour, whole wheat flour, salt, water) stuffed with rice pudding (boiled short grain rice simmered in milk, butter, & salt) brushed with melted butter and baked) topped with egg butter (finely chopped boiled egg mixed into butter with black pepper & salt)
Uudet Perunat Ja Silli (pickled herring with boiled new potatoes sprinkled with dill & salt)
Sauteed sliced reindeer & chopped bacon
As a Finn I love what you did here as a concept... As a sort twisted work of art. And I love every ingredient you used.
But these should not be mixed like this lol. You must be crazy. In a good way.
And the timing is perfect since it was our independence day today.
Thanks so much! I appreciate being called crazy in a good way very much! I'm actually doing every country and so far they've all been on that country's national day :)
Thanks so much!! I will very likely make karjalanpiirakka and lohikeitto again because they were excellent, but I will definitely make the egg butter again and use it for multiple purposes
Edit: typo
I am a big fan of your national noodles series.
I love trying exotic new foods and you show me lots of cool and interesting stuff.
I was joking, I have never eaten liver casserole but I have heard a lot of Finnish people eat it and it sounded very strange to me.
Please don’t consider my opinion to be that of an expert and I am not recommending you try liver casserole.
It's been ages since I last ate liver casserole (I've been vegetarian for 25+ years now), but when I still ate meat I preferred the slightly sweet liver casserole (I think it has dark syrup in it). I hated the raisins, though - not the taste but the soft and a bit slimy texture they get while cooking. So I always plucked them away from my plate. :D
(The same applies also to raisins in pulla.)
If you are going to make liver casserole, there are three ways to eat it: with lingonberry jam, with a lump of butter ("voisilmä" in Finnish) or without any extras.
Thanks for this, it sounds good with a dark syrup! I wouldn't make it often, because I do as much vegetarianism and veganism as possible but I am honestly looking forward to making it :)
It's a bit like döner beef / shwarma in consistency, and it tastes great, has a bit more gamey flavor and a stronger presence but a very "clean" taste.
Like it's something that will "season" a dish easily (like a bit of poronkäristys + rice, you dont need much meat to have the rice absorb the flavor) but it's not overpowering, so you can eat it with many things and if you add stronger flavors in spice or sauce, it doesn't clash.
I can highly recommend it with lingonberry or cranberry jam and potatoes, or some red wine based sauce!
Separately, each part sounds vey delicious. Together, like the other person said, it’s probably absolutely delicious for drunk people. Hangover food. Thank you for sharing the list. Never had some of the things you listed like the egg butter. I must make that.
I am so tempted to put in some dried roasted garlic and dried parsley in it next time because of this.
Oh, that reminds me that sometimes people actually do use some fresh parsley leaves on the butter. I have seen them as a garnish in some gatherings/parties (weddings, funerals, birthdays etc.)
(Caution: not Finnish, but a fan of the Finnish cuisine).
Black/white/any pepper is a must for me. Last time I also added some mayo cause I didn't have enough butter, and it was great!
Recently I've been watching this vintage cooking show, and in 2 separate episodes they mixed smashed eggs with raejuusto and still called it munavoi. I googled it, people actually do that, and it's called "kevyt munavoi"/ munavoi "light" lol. I totally need to try this one.
I've never heard or seen pepper being added in, just the eggs, butter and salt. But if it tasted good then I wouldn't say it was entirely wrong I guess 😁
Not something that I've ever seen done, it's supposed to be a very mild tasting combination. That being said, I always feel that karjalanpiirakkas benefit from added salt, so salty butter and some black pepper in the munavoi sounds great!
Hello, the only language I speak fluently is English, I'll be using Google translate for comments I receive so please bear with me, I know many other countries also speak English but this is something I have to post in every country subreddit and I'm not going to edit it for a lot of different countries
This is a project I'm doing in which I combine food native to a country with noodles, which I chose because I love them and noodles are versatile and easy to top things with. I eat the toppings first and then the noodles.
This isn't meant to offend anyone and I'm sorry if I make mistakes. Please let me know what I get wrong in a constructive way because I love learning. none of this is a substitute for anyone who is from any of these places who are the actual experts. I'm just going off of research from the Internet.
I make ALMOST everything myself.
I only eat once a day, so I can handle the calories from these
Americans don't actually eat like this, and neither do I usually, it's only for this project, I would normally just eat (most) things separately, but for this project I want it to be all together as toppings. I am also aware other people don't eat this way, it's just the format I've chosen for this project.
The reason for the watermark is that my content (this series specifically) has been stolen in the past.
I draw all of the flags myself and sometimes they are quite time consuming, but it's worth it because I love flags. Each of these pictures takes minimum 2.5 hours to research, draw, cook, and post, usually longer (they get posted in multiple places, there are a couple people that enjoy seeing them in different places). That's also why I explain what things contain, I'm aware the people reading this week already know three recipes and facts written here, it's for other subreddits who won't know.
I'm doing every country, please be aware that this intended to be a fun project for me, meant to celebrate culinary diversity.
Sometimes I get things wrong, sometimes there either isn't enough information available or the information I find is incorrect. Sometimes one country's version of a dish is similar but different from neighbor country. Additionally, sometimes things get lost in translation, and sometimes I have to change up a recipe, put my own spin on it, or make substitutions for ingredients I can't find.
I've lived in Massachusetts, USA my entire life, and I'm mostly Swedish by ethnicity.
I add nutmeg after the picture, people would get tired of me REAL quick if it was in every picture I posted.
>I add nutmeg after the picture, people would get tired of me REAL quick if it was in every picture I posted.
Is it whole nutmeg as decoration or really used as seasoning on everything??
Speaking of nutmeg, that's commonly used in traditional Finnish christmas dishes: rutabaga- and carrot casseroles.
Those require a lot of work when done from the scratch and because of their composition wouldn't fit over noodles, but wanted to mention because of the use of nutmeg.
I absolutely love your project. Such a bizarre idea and such devotion! Great job!
Also: do you love nutmeg or are you just devoted on making your Reddit username true?
At first I was like what the hell is this. Then I read your comment with your project and loved it. I believe it must actually be quite good and I’m very curious to see all the other recipes for other countries
It's from a Popeda song "Meat and Potatoes". It's about a man of simple tastes, he's happy when he gets meat and potatoes. No need for fancy foods.
https://youtu.be/rDpiS0U3Osk
Looks great and you chose the right stuff to represent Finnish cuisine IMO. I wouldn't have thought to mix them together like that, but the whole combo does look surprisingly edible to me.
Hey I'm in New York, and I'd love to get my hands on reindeer. Even though I'm near NYC, I don't really have any specialty butcher shops near me. How did you find the butcher shop you went to?
Karelian pastries are goated and this concept is unusual but intriguing reimagining different cuisines as noodles, and with tons of effort put behind them. Also the homemade Lohikeitto sounds really tasty
This is great, obviously the whole combination made my brain go WTF?? but as a display piece it's really wonderful.
If you enjoyed these foods on their own, I also recommend making and trying some makaronilaatikko and lihapiirakka!
My Cook's heart is confused with this dish(and noodles...wuut? I hope they r at least better than cheap ones...dont like them after eating some better...)
Did u run out of plates I ask :D then again u r free to try it as u like haha.
+
Well anyways something I learned from a Polish friend:
Karjalanpie + Eggbutter + garlic pickled cucumber♡♡♡
Also he liked to put mayonese(+black pepper) instead of butter and some spring onions on the top. It was epic in that way too!
Mayonese(+black pepper) with egg and spring onions I mean. And like I would love to see your dish in separated plates. Also did u put there potatos or just noodles? Must be interesting mix o.o but who knows. Might as well work. I love ramen(i know its not like this) but somehow it came to my mind
If someone does not appreciate, it is purely because the flag proportions are off which makes it very confusing. Should be 5 : 3 : 10 horizontally, 4 : 3 : 4 vertically. Otherwise 10/10.
Well done mate! I’ve seen some attempts at Finnish food based on internet recipes before, but previously they’ve mainly made me sad. This makes me hungry!
Impressive work and a fun idea.
I bet your Swedish background gave you an advantage though!
Thanks so much!! It may have given me a little advantage haha, don't get much practice cooking Swedish though except for the annual family Christmas party but I try!
I want to try this, propably just once. :D
EDIT: I mean, everything about this looks good. It just seems weird to have it all combined like that, is all.
Holy fuck.
10/10 for effort, and 11/10 for monstrosity.
I personally would rather starve then rape lohikeitto like that, but it amazes me you are willing to go for such lenghts. Great job!
Now I really crave lohikeitto :(
Räämen
Lol
This is what I'd imagine AI would come up with input "Finnish food".
Lol yes, I research food from every country and it ends up like this
I don't know what on earth that's supposed to be. But it sure does look Finnish. Please do not let any school lunchladies see this they will get ideas for sure.
Hopefully none browse this sub

Were any of the separate dishes something you’ll make/eat again or was this project enough for you? Anyway, great job!
Thanks so much!! I will very likely make karjalanpiirakka and lohikeitto again because they were excellent, but I will definitely make the egg butter again and use it for multiple purposes Edit: typo
Nice! Good to hear!
:)
I need to make eggbutter more ~~often~~! 😋
:) yes
No liver casserole with raisins, I don’t think this counts. The Karelian pastries look great though!
This unironically sounds great to me and I will be making it thank you

Wait a minute...sliced and sautéed reindeer?? What does that taste like?
Poronkaristys in Finnish. My dad makes a killer one.
It's a bit like döner beef / shwarma in consistency, and it tastes great, has a bit more gamey flavor and a stronger presence but a very "clean" taste. Now to find some in the western United States!
Very lean but mostly just like beef
I just learned about Finnish egg butter and I am intrigued. What is it called in Finnish?
Google says munavoi
Correct.
Yea, munavoi
Separately, each part sounds vey delicious. Together, like the other person said, it’s probably absolutely delicious for drunk people. Hangover food. Thank you for sharing the list. Never had some of the things you listed like the egg butter. I must make that.
Thank you! You should definitely make egg butter
With nutmeg, yeah? 😁
Yes :)
I forgot to ask. How much butter to how much eggs? Thank you.
I actually didn't measure but I'd say roughly 1.5 or 2 tablespoons to 1 chopped egg
Thank you. What do you use it on? Bread and crackers?
The recipe said ifor karjalanpiirakka said it's used on that, but yeah I'm going to use it on things like bread
where karpalo? xD
I considered it
Black pepper in egg butter? Does that work?
I thought it was great, is it incorrect?
Never heard or seen that someone puts anything but butter (or margarine) and eggs (maybe salt) in it
Margarine is heresy!
Agreed! It's not munamargariini for a reason!
Thanks, I'll use only those next time
I am so tempted to put in some dried roasted garlic and dried parsley in it next time because of this. Oh, that reminds me that sometimes people actually do use some fresh parsley leaves on the butter. I have seen them as a garnish in some gatherings/parties (weddings, funerals, birthdays etc.)
It sounds incredible with garlic
(Caution: not Finnish, but a fan of the Finnish cuisine). Black/white/any pepper is a must for me. Last time I also added some mayo cause I didn't have enough butter, and it was great! Just smashed eggs and cottage cheese? Kirottua.
I've never heard or seen pepper being added in, just the eggs, butter and salt. But if it tasted good then I wouldn't say it was entirely wrong I guess 😁
Thanks, I remember the recipe telling me to add black pepper, I think it might have been a little better without it
AS a Finn, I would use white pepper (looks better).
Good call
Not something that I've ever seen done, it's supposed to be a very mild tasting combination. That being said, I always feel that karjalanpiirakkas benefit from added salt, so salty butter and some black pepper in the munavoi sounds great!
Yeah it was definitely good but I think I'll leave out the pepper if I do it again
Yes!
I uhh... Did you actually manage to eat this with good conscience?
Yeah it was excellent
Well your stomach (and tongue) is made of hardier stuff than mine. Dishes themselves are spot on, so good job
Many thanks!

I don't know if I should be disgusted or thrilled. Either way, Good job.
Thank you!
The finnish cuisine experience in one dish honestly im impressed and disturbed at the same time. Great job
Thanks :)
Looks delicious. Currently drooling.
Thank you :)
Impressive you managed to get all that ingredience.
Yeah it was hard to find reindeer here
I can imagine. And reindeer is quite expensive even in Finland, how much did it over there? And where was it from?
I'll just say it was NOT A CHEAP, lol. It was from a specialty butcher somewhat near me
Ping /u/finnishyourplate
Oooo thank you!
NP, literally the first thing I thought of when I saw OP was American and had used actual reindeer in the dish. :)
Hey I'm in New York, and I'd love to get my hands on reindeer. Even though I'm near NYC, I don't really have any specialty butcher shops near me. How did you find the butcher shop you went to?
It was in Boston, kind of far from you unfortunately
I would 100% pay for this

It only seems to be missing the noodles.
I promise they're in there
I want to like this but somehow it feels cursed.
That's understandable
Noodles aren't a finn thing.
Yeah, just the format I chose for this project
Never encountered something looking this unholy while also looking so irresistable to try
Wait until you meet me
Looks both delicious and disgusting. Good job!
Thank you :)
