Due process needs to be done but also mental health checks etc. should be required annually etc. and I know FF have support etc. but professionals accessing someone might have been able to intervene. This is also a good reason why if you’re hurt or having issues from on the job stuff you get it documented, not only are you protecting yourself but also you family should something go south.
In my experience, until mental health is "forced" on the firefighters, most people don't know when to get help. That combined with not knowing what help can do for you makes reaching out daunting.
The best thing we can do for the people standing beside us is to talk about our personal experience with getting help so we can demystify the process and highlight the effective resources.
