Yeah, I have a few cardboard scraps like this and also a small section of pool noodle on my boat with Leaders on it like this. Haven't bought an actual one yet.
God dammit. Reading slowly, my brain autofilled the rest of your comment to “…you can use it as a PFD” or something. Absolutely caught me off guard
Edit: After further thought, PFD still works for your idea too
It's a tried and true trick, but that doesn't mean she didn't come by it independently, and it's pretty goddamn awesome that she's helping to make your fishing more e-fish-ent...
Ahem
It's called a pun and I don't count them as dad jokes because they are independently enjoyable. I think dad jokes have an especially cheesy quality to them which a simple pun doesn't qualify for per se, as seen here.
They sell something similar to this at stores. I have it but i forgot what its called, but its basically a tube that has rubber on it so you can press the hooks inside. It also floats in case you drop it in water. I can try to dm you
Heck yeah! I have one for trout rigged up with Aberdeen hooks, octopus or worm hooks for catfish, and lindy/float rigs on one for walleye/drift fishing. They are super handy when changing up fishing styles.
A pool noodle works too, but this is the no cost/cheapest way since everyone has cardboard laying around. I use cardboard to organize my pretied rigs and put them in ziplock bags or those "binders" made for fish tackle.
I do this too, but as other suggested using pool noodles or pipe insulation works too. I taped some old pipe insulation around a wooden dowel, then cut shallow lines around to act as a line guide.
One tip, regardless of what you use, is to check your hook’s sharpness more frequently when you store them like this. Even using foam can dull the points and cardboard will probably be worse. It doesn’t take much at all. So just keep an inexpensive hook sharpener in your box and get in the habit of checking the points as part of your rigging process.
I’m glad we were able to chat about it then! It’s one of the basics that will pay off. Even if you don’t snag your hooks, a few strikes can dull the points (teeth, jaws, etc.). Keeping your hooks sharp is one of the basics that are applicable to any situation. Tight lines!
I use a super fine diamond stone, the hook sharpeners on temu/aliexpress are too coarse and make the hook feel more dull. Diamond stones are cheap and definitely worth it but don't use a coarse stone, even a honing stone works great
Wife’s a genius. Yeah they make stuff you can use to keep your leaders, but your wife thought about your needs and came up with a solution. Your a genius too for marrying her.
She’s a keeper for even trying. If you have room, pool noodles work well. Slice all the way around about a quarter inch in, about every inch. It holds the leaders great without any unraveling
Very smart and awesome that she Is involved in what I would assume is just your hobby and not hers!. I would suggest using packing foam in the same manner. It floats, is water proof, and if you order shit from Amazon, in abundance.
I assume she does some sewing or cross-stitching.
My wife showed me this trick a few decades ago. lol
I was the idiot that ignored her until I saw people using pool noodles…
That might be it. She doesn’t do embroidery specifically, but probably knows how. The stuff she does with crafting is more eclectic than what I do with tools. She’s pretty awesome.
The hooks are incredibly sharp and cardboard ruins the points very quickly. Instead of cardboard, use some packaging foam. I got some super firm foam I got out of a box at some point, it's stiff and hard and you can cut groves in it so the line gets fixed.
And yes, this is a pretty common trick. There's even some pre-made products to help you store them, such as this tackel box from Fladen. (https://www.skittfiske.no/fladen/174779/fladen-tackel-box)
It’s looking like I’m gonna have to switch it up soon. This will work temporarily. I’ll have to think of something that can fit in my boxes. I’ll try to track down some styrofoam. I’m sure we get a shit ton at work.
I did something similar and I loved it was so neat.. until I unraveled a rig and it was all bendy and curly so hope that doesn't happen here though I love the idea
Boil some water with a fire and dip the line in. Take it out of the hot water and pull it taught so it's straight. While the line is taught and straight dip it in cool water (like a lake or river). Continue this process down the entire length of the line, and now your line won't be crinkly.
I thought I’d discovered el dorado when I used a piece of pool noodle. Not original but damned if it isn’t one of the best ways to keep a bunch of leaders rtg
She’s right, but I use this method when I make up my stringers up the night before I go fishing!
Try using styrofoam, that works very well also.
You must have a very cool and special wife👍
She saw something online. I know a couple people who do this, and I assumed that's kinda how the store-bought ones come in the package... wrapped around something with notches so they don't get tangled... is that not right?
She said it’s how some craft things are stored and saw me struggling to untangle them to put them in a new tackle box. No idea what specifically. It was all together in a piece of non corrugated cardboard, but not in a small presentation. It had two holes in it. Hole hooked in one hole with them all organized by size. It wasn’t feasible for storing in a tackle box without taking up the majority of space.
Well, idk bout genius but you got a woman who genuinely wants you to enjoy your hobbies and idk how to explain how lucky you are. I'm tearing up a bit. Lol. Im sure if you put a lil more thought into it you'd come up with something that fits in a tacklebox. Gotta let me know when ya do.
Oh shoot, why didn't I think of cardboard
I used a piece of quarter inch plywood with a piece of foam at the top then duck tape around the whole thing so I can stick little pieces of painters tape on it to hold the lead down
It doesn't hurt, and I've done this with cardboard before in the past. I would pre-tie three way swivel set-ups for trolling rigs that were used back in the day to save time when fishing snag infested waters. The line WILL retain memory of being set in place like this, so it's best if you only keep these for a limited time.
I am quite new to fishing. Can someone enlighten me as why you would want to have your hooks already on lines? I usually tie my hooks directly on the line I have on my rod, is that wrong?
Anglers have been tying fishing line to fishing hooks for quite some time.
Oh, you mean the leader manager? Yeah, that’s an old trick too.
But it’s pretty cool she came up with it probably never having seen one before.
I used this method of hook storage when I brush fished on the Hillsborough River.
Still a good idea and praise her for helping you. Good women are hard to find.
I've always used a square of cardboard to line my fly box. If you peel the top layer off, you can stick the point of the hooks into the ridges and have them all lined up.
Wish I could post a picture…
I’ll cut a straw into about 1, 1.25 inches. The lead, I’ll “fold” and slide into the straw. The hook, i loop back over the straw hook it into the straw. Super tidy and a way to recycle used straws.
Looks like a good idea until it gets wet, which is highly likely taking it fishing, but there’s lots of good suggestions in here in an alternate material to do the same thing
If it's common, YOU didn't know about it, and she did.
So, she's a genius either way.
Shame on you for asking. I hope she doesn't read your Reddit posts... hahaha
I told her. Her only response was, “You made a Reddit post about that?”. I told her I thought it was genius and I wanted to see if she was the first. Regardless, it seems to be giving a few people the same idea. Haha
She’s a keeper!
She really is.

Yeah, I have a few cardboard scraps like this and also a small section of pool noodle on my boat with Leaders on it like this. Haven't bought an actual one yet.
I have done the same thing for leaders that I make. It works well.
Have a green one for the 70’s Cardboard gets wet and doesn’t hold up
Not mutually exclusive, but this isn't an uncommon trick. Pool noodles cut down into 6 or 8 inch sections work well too.
And it'll always float
And in an emergency you can fuck it.
Username checks out
Absolutely hysterical
Probably remove the hooks first. Unless you're in to that.
Just pinch the barbs you coward
Isn’t that what it’s called? “Pinchin’ the barbs”
Lmao
Please remove the hooks prior to penetration.
Narh just turned em around was ribbed for my pleasure
You and I have different emergencies.
God dammit. Reading slowly, my brain autofilled the rest of your comment to “…you can use it as a PFD” or something. Absolutely caught me off guard Edit: After further thought, PFD still works for your idea too
Ohhh...You're supposed to fuck IT...I knew something didn't feel right.
I use this, and it keeps the hooks from poking you which is nice
I have a pool noodle zip tied to the railing above my windshield for this reason
It's a tried and true trick, but that doesn't mean she didn't come by it independently, and it's pretty goddamn awesome that she's helping to make your fishing more e-fish-ent... Ahem
I appreciate the dad joke.
It's called a pun and I don't count them as dad jokes because they are independently enjoyable. I think dad jokes have an especially cheesy quality to them which a simple pun doesn't qualify for per se, as seen here.
Shut up.
Right, now that you say it
They sell something similar to this at stores. I have it but i forgot what its called, but its basically a tube that has rubber on it so you can press the hooks inside. It also floats in case you drop it in water. I can try to dm you
Tackle Buddy! I've have 4 of them.
That's the one! I have two. One for circle hooks and one for trout leaders
My old man had tons of these with pre-tied Lindy rigs
Lindy rig!? Just joking. That is what I call most of my pre tied rigs.
Heck yeah! I have one for trout rigged up with Aberdeen hooks, octopus or worm hooks for catfish, and lindy/float rigs on one for walleye/drift fishing. They are super handy when changing up fishing styles.
That would be awesome. Thank you
Sent a dm
You can also use a piece of foam. Cardboard works but it won't hold up well over time.
I use corks. Stick the hook in and wrap the line around it.
Same here, they fit nicely in Plano cases too
Or empty pill bottle in the bottom of the box
I do this with my snells, trout rigs, walleye jigs, and Xmas lights.
A pool noodle works too, but this is the no cost/cheapest way since everyone has cardboard laying around. I use cardboard to organize my pretied rigs and put them in ziplock bags or those "binders" made for fish tackle.
Her boyfriend fishes a lot
We both laughed at that
Absolute genius move.
I actually do the same thing. Pretty wild
I do this too, but as other suggested using pool noodles or pipe insulation works too. I taped some old pipe insulation around a wooden dowel, then cut shallow lines around to act as a line guide. It doesn’t take much at all. So just keep an inexpensive hook sharpener in your box and get in the habit of checking the points as part of your rigging process.
This is solid advice. I didn’t even know a hook sharpener was a thing.
I’m glad we were able to chat about it then! It’s one of the basics that will pay off. Even if you don’t snag your hooks, a few strikes can dull the points (teeth, jaws, etc.). Keeping your hooks sharp is one of the basics that are applicable to any situation. Tight lines!

I bought one from Walmart, but it’s vertical and large and cumbersome so I stopped bringing it in my tackle. Yours would be much better!
I wrap them around a 1 foot piece of pool noodle and then stick the hook in the noodle. And it floats so you can get it back if it falls in the water.
I've got foam ones I bought online years back.
Your wife is a genius. Just leave it at that.
Wife’s a genius. Yeah they make stuff you can use to keep your leaders, but your wife thought about your needs and came up with a solution. Your a genius too for marrying her.
100% the truth
Scale it up and it’s good for wrapping up Christmas lights too.
I use zip lock bags. Less chance of hooks getting rust.
You have one smart wife. She should show us more fishing hacks.
I’ll post if she comes up with something else. She probably will; she’s a hell of a lot smarter than me.
You were smart enough to marry her. So ya doing OK. 😃
She’s a keeper for even trying. If you have room, pool noodles work well. Slice all the way around about a quarter inch in, about every inch. It holds the leaders great without any unraveling
I do this for my drop shots. They take too long to set up so i pre rig them and wrap them around cardboard like this
Very smart and awesome that she Is involved in what I would assume is just your hobby and not hers!. I would suggest using packing foam in the same manner. It floats, is water proof, and if you order shit from Amazon, in abundance.
Both, obvi!
I use corks for smaller hooks and safety pins through the eyes of bigger hooks
I have a few plastic ones with spring loaded hooks for kreping walleye harnesses.
I assume she does some sewing or cross-stitching. My wife showed me this trick a few decades ago. lol I was the idiot that ignored her until I saw people using pool noodles…
Probably dabbled with both. Neither exclusively.
Makes sense. That’s similar to how you store embroidery thread.
That might be it. She doesn’t do embroidery specifically, but probably knows how. The stuff she does with crafting is more eclectic than what I do with tools. She’s pretty awesome.
I love eclectic crafters. I make mixed media dolls when I’m not fishing.
Old school, we did that as preteen kids with our hooks to keep them from tangling up. That was back in the 70’s
The hooks are incredibly sharp and cardboard ruins the points very quickly. Instead of cardboard, use some packaging foam. Try to get some really firm stuff, and cut grooves for the line to sit in.
I did something similar and I loved it was so neat.. until I unraveled a rig and it was all bendy and curly so hope that doesn't happen here though I love the idea

Thanks I didn't know I could do this 😊
this is how Eagle claw sold their Snelled hooks in the 70s and 80s. Sabki rigs are packaged like this today. Either way you got a keeper!
She likely has some history with crafts & sewing. Either way she’s a keeper & worth a plethora of compliments 😊
She saw something online. I know a couple people who do this, and I assumed that's kinda how the store-bought ones come in the package... wrapped around something with notches so they don't get tangled... is that not right?

Yep, she's a genius. That's cool and organized.
I do this with the packaging
Oh shoot, why didn't I think of cardboard I used a piece of quarter inch plywood with a piece of foam at the top then duck tape around the whole thing so I can stick little pieces of painters tape on it to hold the lead down
use to do this in the seventies but on a small piece of plywood because when it gets wet you got a mess on cardboard
Paint roller works well also
Use a pool noodle. Your welcome!
That's kinda how I store christmas lights
common asf
Common but still smart for coming up with it on her own.
Maybe just tell her to keep her job. She don’t invent the light bulb mate
Lol
Well done!

Just assume she is a genius and tell her as much, it’s only gonna make your life easier man!!
Anglers have been tying fishing line to fishing hooks for quite some time. Oh, you mean the leader manager? Yeah, that’s an old trick too. But it’s pretty cool she came up with it probably never having seen one before.
Get on shark tank right now
She’s a common genius
DIY rigbox?
Marry her! Again.
I use toilet paper rolls.
She did good! I saved a bunch of foam flooring tiles my kids grew out of for stuff just like this.
I used this method of hook storage when I brush fished on the Hillsborough River. Still a good idea and praise her for helping you. Good women are hard to find.
She works for Eagle? 🦅 lol
She's seen sewing kits, this is similar setup
I've always used a square of cardboard to line my fly box. If you peel the top layer off, you can stick the point of the hooks into the ridges and have them all lined up.
I didn’t peel it back, but I definitely have them inside the tunnel of the corrugated section.
Yes
That's how we would keep our trot lines untangled lines before and after their set
Pretty dang common bud
My son scored a old timers tackle box at a swap meet, the guy had done the same thing. I would say your wife's a keeper
I use a 12” long piece of pool noodle so that when I inevitably drop my leaders off the boat the float and I can scoop them right back out haha
I switched to the black foam for insulating 1/2" copper a while back. Cardboard was getting wet and gross.
I use cut straws to organize my takcle box.
Please explain....
Wish I could post a picture… I’ll cut a straw into about 1, 1.25 inches. The lead, I’ll “fold” and slide into the straw. The hook, i loop back over the straw hook it into the straw. Super tidy and a way to recycle used straws.
Okay, I'll check that out!! Think this will help me tremendously when Im packing super light!!
Okay, I'll check that out!! Think this will help me tremendously when Im packing super light!!
Looks like a good idea until it gets wet, which is highly likely taking it fishing, but there’s lots of good suggestions in here in an alternate material to do the same thing
She’s seen a wille bait file before watch your back if you don’t have one
She is seeing an experienced fisherman on the side.
Eagle hooked used to come in packs like this.
She's great no question of that but try something waterproof like plastic next time even better
I’m keeping an eye out for some plastic corrugated pieces
Awesome
Foam chunks are better. Doesn't dissolve when introduced to water. Floats. You can get 1$ pool noodle and part it out for all kinds of uses
Not uncommon, my dad just took an old sponge and cut slits for the line to feed into and wrapped the leaders around the sponge.
I do this with a lot of different things. Especially related to my “craft crap”. Definitely a keeper though!
Common but tell her she’s a genius she probably deserves to hear it!
If it's common, YOU didn't know about it, and she did. So, she's a genius either way. Shame on you for asking. I hope she doesn't read your Reddit posts... hahaha

If it’s not common, you haven’t been fishing long enough
Well, this is /r/fishingforbeginners sooooo, isn’t that the point?
