I don't understand how riding at 50 rpms is fun. It sounds awful.
But people see 38mph for literally 1 second (never sustained) on their analytics, and they then think they're riding at that speed. Even when their average mpg is 13.5 MPH or less.
This sub is so absurd. It's why we're always on bicyclecirclejerk. Posters here do it to themselves.
Couldn’t agree more. I average 75-80rpm, probably closer to 80-85 when up to speed. Spin to win. Also most people aren’t using an actual speed sensor which gives wildly innacurate top speed results, so they likely aren’t even hitting 38
Agreed 💯. I'll hit 100+ rpm if I'm geared lower and pacing. But people here use gear ratios as ego boosts, and not measurements to determine the best gearing for a ride.
To each his own I guess 🤣 We all learn sometime I guess.
I believe you might be missing my points:
50 rpms is inefficient AF. And hard on the body, especially the knees.
Max mph is a momentary metric which doesn't mean anything.
13.5 mph average is recreational cycling speeds. My GF who is not a cyclist at all can maintain that speed.
The ratio you're running (46x17 or 49x16 or whatever) 9doesn't matter if it's the wrong gearing for your route. I'd say 50% of the sub (that post Strava/metrics) are overgeared in my opinion. Lots of 40-60 rpm averages. It's bad for your body to spend most of your ride in that range.
But I always encourage people to ride what they want. I also try to put a PSA comment in these posts to help people who don't know better and hopefully prevent people from being overgeared fir no reason and normalizing 50 rpms.
Maybe just maybe people on this sub should start strengthening their knees. There are exercises that basically bulletproof your knee by strengthening the tendons, ligaments and supporting muscles. You can even partially fix a hurting knee. At least I did.
Google bulletproof knees, there are a bunch of videos that provide a great number of different exercises. I don’t always do all of them, just one or two at most every time I work out. You will notice improvement relatively quickly but you have to do it regularly to maintain it
Just work on your mobility and squat/lunge a lot. The fear of ruining the knees is overblown imho. Take care of the muscles surrounding them off the bike and you'll be gravy.
If your ratio is giving you knee trouble I suggest spending a lot more time in the gym. Squat, leg extension, and seated leg curl. My knees are pretty bulletproof because of this. Your pace at the velo will improve notably as well.
If you’re not doing this for sport, go down to 46/15. You’ll enjoy the experience more.
I accidentally rode 48/13 for a few years. Asked the bike shop to add a 15t but found they'd given me a 13t a few years later when I changed wheels. Always wondered why it felt so goddamn heavy and slow to get going (and to stop). Made slightly more manageable with a front brake.
Ok here are some things i found out using this god forsaken ratio:
I can go uphill with this no problem, the heavy pedaling is not really a problem bc my legs are pretty strong for it but no way im riding this in places with high verticality because while i can still skid in it, theres no way i can skid going downhill
Im changing to a slightly lighter gear to prolly like 52/15 or 52/16 but im not gonna throw away the 13t cog for times i want to go full speed or just feel suicidal
Put your manual shift car in top gear and try to accelerate from a dead stop. Why does it stall? Why does it diesel and buck going up hills? Why does the clutch keep burning out? *WHYYYYYYYYY* (Nancy Kerrigan voice)
Or go slower overall, and hit a higher top speed once per ride.

I was posting this as a joke, its just a photo from the seller.. But then I actually bought it So ill go with max pain or no gain

What am i reading 😭
That's so effing stupid, why would anyone like to push bricks??
I ran this ratio for a year, many years ago... ride with a brake
<60rpm 90% of the time lol, bye bye knees

tbf most of us are between 46x17 and 49x16. There's some below that (mostly tracklocross builds), and some above, which we often make fun of.

Hello quads goodbye knees!

Ok if you never stop or don't do up hills. Must be a bitch moving from a stop start lol
Make sure to rotate your tires on your rim after every ride, cause you literally have only one skid patch 😂😂
Nah bruh im not worried about that ill just fall off the bike to slow down
Hahaha. Old school.
With that ratio, instead of skidding the pedals just try to send your femur up through the intestines.
Use a brake for this ratio, unles You are gonna do road cycling

Please do show i need it just incase

You may want a brake for awhile.
bye
I guess it depends what you’re going to use it for. A 108" gear isn’t that big, in the context of track riding.
This is OP’s bike; https://preview.redd.it/8muajljamz2d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fac6ee63f00b98e10936b535870122b9ac39d678
now you have done it
Tell me you live in a flat area without telling me

Both feet per pedal to get moving and literally balls to the walls for any hill you encounter. This is the way
Turn the cranks so they're both facing the same direction and give the big two-foot plunge.
So im basically doing squats to travel.... Sounds like a good idea ngl
Until then, you’ll go fast.
hell yeaaaah aint that like 22mph at 90rpm or theresbouts? used to run this ratio when I was 17 and less risk averse :)
More like 28 mph at 90rpm

53:13 soon or like higher?
52:13 with the new cog
Lol. I wouldn't even ride that on the velodrome. Granted, I am more of a spinner and 50/17 was my favourite road gear for a looong time.
Hello quads
I rode 52/13 for years! I'm in Minnesota, though, so the hills are only rollers.
Dayum
14t?

you cant get a faster and easier caedance and if you are riding in the streets starting and stopping at 30mph-ish is true pain

yea well thats honestly the comf pace with that ratio
