You are lucky though because you live in an area that’s going to have amazing yard sales and estate sales and barn sales and church sales. Just because Goodwill as a thrift store isn’t a good place to source anymore doesn’t mean you can’t source it just means you’re going to have to change the way you source Read through this forum, read through the hundreds of posts about sourcing and use that knowledge

Imperfect-practical

I stopped at a church sale, late. 1/2 price. All the hunters and thrifters and hoarders had already pawed thru everything. I spent $8. Of course none is yet sold but my comp prices is around $240. It’s because my goal is to find what the others didn’t. I always do ;) Church sales are the bomb!!!

Archimediator

I don’t really flip anymore but still love going to the second day of estate sales because everything is so cheap. Last weekend I got a vintage Yves Saint Laurent brooch for $.50 that is going for almost $300 online. I confirmed it to be real. It was the last day so they just wanted to get everything sold. I went late to a church sale once and came into so much beautiful vintage clothing for $5. It was a deal where you fill a bag for $5. Going late to church sales and estate sales is always such a massive come up. I try not to even tempt myself by going to day one because 9/10 something valuable will be left on the last day that no one noticed.

Imperfect-practical

It’s like manna from heaven when it happens ;)

raytube

indeed, one time, I held off going to large music gear estate sale the first day, because I didn't want to buy much, and I didn't want to pay full price. I went later the second day, and the sellers were ready to unload all the rest of it on me all at once. So what if I didn't get the top choice guitar, I got a truckload of gear for cheap.

beastofwordin

There’s one near me that does $5 for a bagful on the final afternoon. Last year, I found garbage bags full of donations under the tables that had never even been put out. I scored some great stuff.

Loud_Award_2238

My issue with them is... Finding the church sales. I can't figure out where they get advertised aside from their sign outside the church...

castaway47

Church bulletins is one place I look especially if they are online in pdf with back issues still available. I look through the ones from the last few years looking for evidence of a bake sale, rummage sale, or requests for donations/volunteers. There's a good chance if it's a yearly thing it's the same time of year every year. Target specific churches especially with large or older congregations. You could also call the church secretary and ask.

Loud_Award_2238

Good idea about contacting the churches directly. Hadn't considered that

C-M-H

Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Classifieds (yes some churches still advertise in the newspaper, check online classifieds), Google search "Rummage Sale" + your city/state (add a time frame to your search to get recent results), find churches on Google maps and look at their websites/social media (you can also check the previous years posts) And check for places like the VFW and other associations that might run sales, you can also ask in local groups.

Cautious_Parfait8152

There's some online listing sites .. estatesales.com etc. Church sales listed often

Cautious_Parfait8152

Tell me about clothes flipping! Getting old and flipping big stuff is getting hard. Massachusetts here, we have lots of thrift stores, rummage sales

Development-Feisty

All I can tell you is read through this forum and try to find advice that is suited for the part of the country you’re in and the type of work you’re trying to do. There are years of posts in this forum and it’s a great treasure show, and Learning how to search within this forum will also help you later because it’s going to be a great way for you to really learn about how to quickly research

dead_mall111

They should try and go to a goodwill outlet, my area has high retail store prices too but at the bins you can get all the clothes tagged $7-8 that was too high for less than a dollar lol. Sometimes I get stuff marked up to $15-20 and am only paying based on weight

Development-Feisty

Because people keep things generation to generation where they currently live, and unlike where I live there isn’t a shit ton of flippers running around trying to get the best things Where this person lives is where you’re going to find some of the real fun treasures, but you’re gonna have to have an eye and know what to look for

Feeling-Visit1472

My favorite thing is when they have no idea what they’re pricing. Zara shoes? $25. Hugo Boss shirt? $4.

jsmalltri

Well in my area the stores have been instructed during sorting that anything "brand name" (and there is a list of different brands) is sent to the Goodwill e-commerce store to sell online and the rest goes on the floor. So a majority of the higher quality items aren't even making it to the store level.

Feeling-Visit1472

Yea but I’m saying that often they don’t even know what the higher quality items are.

beastofwordin

Mine thinks that Tommy Hilfiger is couture, but didn’t know what Krista Larson was. Fine with me

CaregiverBrilliant60

You really notice when DVDs and Blurays go for $7.99. Even 1/2 price at $3.99 would be a stretch.

Lucasisbored

I got the peaky blinders complete series on dvd the other day for $2.99, but for the office season 1 they wanted 24.99. Six episodes. Wild.

raytube

my local price all their box sets per disc. so any box set or book series is immediately over priced for resale. They have a large bin of 45's, they will only sell them a singe disc at a time, at a full album price. ugh. they also put sharpie on every tag they can.

PreferenceWeak9639

I get $1.29 dvds at this locally-owned grocery store. Yes, most of them are used but they’re in good condition. You can open the box and check. These thrift stores attempting to sell them for over $5 a pop are delusional.

jjenofalltrades

I also live in a big Midwestern city so I'm sorry for your loss of good thrifting. Last time I passed through rural Appalachia was about a year ago and where I was - western NC mostly I found that there weren't thrift store chains but much smaller local non profits - such as a women's shelter/domestic violence recovery organization or an animal shelter that use their thrift shops to fund micro local missions. I think I discovered them on Google maps and they looked kinda sketchy as I drove past but I had a great experience and am glad I went in. A much smaller operation but the stores had much more quirky personal styles and were staffed by people who clearly believe in the mission of their organizations. Tl,Dr - Find the charities you want to support and look for their stores. Good luck!

pactbopntb

I totally understand what you mean. I am trying estate or garage sales from now on because they mark the clothes $1 or $2 for the most part. I can find some good flips at goodwill but it’s like $8 for a skirt I’ll make $20 for. After fees I make like $5 off of it. Time to look for other places to source!

bentrodw

I refuse to donate to Goodwill. Last 3 years they are at near retail new prices

sheneversawitcoming

I found a skirt I liked with tags. Went to Costco and found the exact same ones for half of what I paid at goodwill :(

bentrodw

It's tragic honestly because Goodwill is supposed to help communities. When I was a kid, those were the clothes we could afford. Not anymore.

Development-Feisty

I say this over and over again but Goodwill has thrift stores not to help the community but to fund their programs. So when you get upset for how much they’re charging please remember that the thrift stores for them are funding job placement programs, training programs, and other community focused programs. It doesn’t mean they’re not a bad place and that a lot of money isn’t going into administration (but it was never supposed to be that the thrift store was the charitable aspect of their business model Also almost all Goodwill after two or three weeks make everything 50% off so if the prices are really too high show up on the morning that the discount comes into effect and purchase then https://www.guidestar.org/profile/7796525 https://www.charitynavigator.org/ein/951641441 J Patrick Mcclenahan, President & Ceo Goodwill So Cal $714,329

bentrodw

They don't really accomplish that anymore either.

aGEgc3VjayBteSBkaWNr

Yeah and now since they’re too pricey to use to flip stuff they’re useless to me!

ope__sorry

I donate my absolute shit to them. Stuff that isn’t even worth my time snapping pictures. I got some occupied Japan porcelain pieces for cheap last weekend. When I went to list I was cleaning them and noticed they’re filthy and pretty sure they were in a totally flooded basement. I wrapped those biohazards back up and shipped them right to goodwill.

Deadsolidperfect

I only donate absolute shit to GW. If I accidently buy something stained or ruined beyond repair, I'll drop it at our most overpriced goodwill.

Agreeable-Fudge-7329

And you all then have the nerve to show up here a bitch about them? Like what fucking childishness from asshole resellers pissed that a thrift store doesn't exist to just stock your Ebay store.

Deadsolidperfect

You are a very pleasant person. I hope you have a nice day!

PraetorianAE

If you can’t find enough profitable items (even with their price increase) you prolly need to focus on learning more items that are worth more to sell. Do a zip code search of what sold in your areas and start learning the things that sell for $30-$40. Then their price increase won’t matter. Once you gain this knowledge of 100’s of items that fit your metric, you can even source online and sell online. Don’t even have to leave your house. Goodwills prices aren’t the MAIN problem, lack of knowledge is. Start studying everyday and learn what’s available in your area.

Apprehensive-Disk314

How do you do a zip code search of what sells locally?

AdoptedByFear

There might be a better way to do this but for me it’s an eBay search where you search the most generic term possible like “vintage”, set it to sold listings, buy it now (personal preference), used condition, increase the price to over $20 (personal preference) and “sort by” distance: nearest first

Apprehensive-Disk314

Thank you!

Geek508

Google is the answer. Search for the "wealthiest zipcodes around your area," then, go to FB marketplace and enter the zipcode. The rest is on you 😏

hahaheeheehoho

> How do you do a zip code search of what sells locally? Your response doesn't answer the question "How do you do a zip code search of what sells locally?"

Apprehensive-Disk314

That tells me nothing about sold items.

Geek508

I did 75% of your homework, but you want the whole cake. Oh well 🤷

bigtopjimmi

Why do any of it if you're going to leave out the most important part? It's just a waste of everybody's time including your own.

Apprehensive-Disk314

I already got my answer. I have no problems selling things, I was just curious. If you don't want to put the effort into answering a question, then leave it be. Thanks for being the smartass that always has to run their mouth. Have a great day.

Geek508

You too. 👍

Youkahn

Unfortunately this won't be upvoted since people can't take responsibility but this is true. Also, love the local zip advice, never thought of that before.

plussizejourney

I live in a suburb of Austin Texas and the more country or lower income area a goodwill is in the higher the prices. It's like they know the poorer people are the more they need clothes and really stick it to them on prices Maybe more affluent areas have a greater selection so Goodwill's there have to be more competitive in pricing

gadget850

>really are of no help to anybody I will disagree. Their workforce program helped me get into my previous job which lead me to this better job.

C-M-H

Try garage sales, estate sales, flea markets and local (non chain) thrift stores. If you're able to take Saturday to drive to the nearest big city and stock up on inventory or even take a weekend once a month.

Geek508

Goodwill is the "man in the middle." Try to get stuff from the original owner, and you'll see the difference. I used to buy a lot of cheap electronics for around $1.99-$2.99, but after covid, the same devices are now $4.99, and on top of that, the power supply doesn't come with it anymore (that's another $2.99 🖕)

Zoso1973

Goodwill is garbage now. Overpriced items and anything of value goes on their auctions.

Worth-Development684

Well there was that incident where they wouldn't give a homeless woman shoes lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFJeTqWKIRg

deephair

If you are only going to goodwill to get stuff to flip you are going to the wrong place. You want to go to Thrift stores run by Hospitals or Churches sometimes these are very hard to find and have very limited hours most flippers in my area don't even know most of these are even around. You may not even find them on Google.

PreferenceWeak9639

Try estate sales and yard sales instead. Thrift stores are no longer good places to source from. While goodwill is definitely the worst, the others are bad too. You’d be surprised how many of the supposed mom n pop thrift shops are scams too, and they are just as overpriced.

TheBadGuyBelow

Goodwill has been a lost cause for years. At times you see people talking about "oh not MY Goodwill" but that is only because they are lagging behind a little bit. I remember being the same, seeing everyone trashing Goodwill while I was able to load up a shopping cart full of good stuff every other day. Fast forward 6 months and overnight it was not even worth grabbing a shopping cart when 98% of the time you walk away in disbelief shaking your head. Even if some of them have not yet started hitting the crack pipe, they all eventually do. At some point, you will walk into your Goodwill and suddenly there will be nothing worth buying when almost anything anyone might want is shipped out, and all the leftover garbage is priced to the moon and back. Take it from me, do not depend on thrift stores, those days are dead.

Exciting-Current-778

I absolutely hate the goodwill, not because of their stuff, but because they get it all for free , then have the gall to do that...

Thirsty_Comment88

We need to organize an all out boycott of goodwill

Agreeable-Fudge-7329

Go nuts. When they ask why, and you tell them you want lower prices so you can resell it on Ebay for a huge mark up, and not have your margins be as small, don't act shocked when you get laughed off the stage.

Thirsty_Comment88

Keep licking those CEOs and shareholders boots

PastTense1

Don't they cut prices after a few months when the stuff doesn't sell?

SatisfactionEarly916

They change the half off color tag on Mondays. However, I have caught them pulling the stuff off the rack . It's not easy to find the half off color.

PhilHardingsHotPants

I don't think the Goodwills where I live ever have sales, or at least they didn't the last time I shopped there.

catdog1111111

They pull the stuff out of the store as soon as the sale hits. It makes zero sense but that’s what most stores do.

Purple1829

Goodwill will occasionally have something good sitting out, but they mostly pull all of their good stuff (at least around here) to sell online. Of the larger chain thrifts, The Habitat of Humanity Restore is my favorite. They seem to put it on the shelves if it’s donated. Their business is more on home goods though.

rodrimrr

The local goodwill in my hometown was out of control. Used in box appliances were priced higher than new elsewhere. Not that I'm looking to flip them, it was just an eye opener for me. Used books were all $7 minimum. $0.99 on eBay, $7 at goodwill. Crazy. I don't know clothes or shoes so can't speak on those.

Horzzo

Mine's had a PS4 for $150 for weeks. It's no longer a thrift store really.

Ace_Robots

My former boss made his nut (millions) hunting for antiques and such all through rural VA and WV. Thrift stores can have some treasures but it’s more important to see the diamond in the rough, and in this case, a dilapidated barn.

User1296173

No, you just need to do more homework. I sell clothes and still find stuff that goes for decent money but I also sell vcrs, small appliances, kitchen stuff, games etc… you just gotta research.

SatisfactionEarly916

Could I pm you?

User1296173

Yes

Agreeable-Fudge-7329

They get it free, doesn't mean they are under any obligation to sell it for free. We sure as heck wouldn't do that. They have bills to pay like any other store. And judging by how my nearest GW has to toss literal trash into their dumpster from people that just drop off anything overnight, I can get the need to charge more to cover the dumpster bills alone. Edit: Get ass mad all you want at that. Not one of you can tell me I'm wrong, though.

TrooperLynn

I moved from the Phoenix area with 50 GW within a ten mile radius, to SW Virginia. I’ve been here two years and haven’t found a single good thrift, from Charlotte to Raleigh, to Roanoke and Richmond. Absolute crap clothing. Glad I brought a ton of unlisted inventory from AZ.

KingKandyOwO

Im sorry, but if you need Goodwill to be able to flip then yeah you should quit flipping. Learn to diversify your item sources

RareBeautyOnEtsy

Ok, Mr. “ I know every market in every state in the universe” Grow up. Stop insulting people.

stream38

How is telling someone to diversify their sources considered an insult? I'm always so perplexed when people complain about the prices of their only source for inventory. You either accept it or move on to another source. Goodwill could close at any time, and the source could go away entirely. If a $1-$2 increase per item cost isn't ideal for this seller, then they probably don't have a very profitable business model to begin with.

SatisfactionEarly916

You don't need to be rude. Goodwill is all there is. There's not many yard or estate sales. I will check out the flea market again but it's usually over priced junk. When I lived in Columbus, I used all kinds of sources.

PreferenceWeak9639

Join your local yard sale/estate sale facebook page. There’s usually at least one per weekend. You may need to drive to the next county or something but estate sales are truly the best way to source stuff. They have a mission to get rid if a houseful of items in 1-3 days, which means you can get a lot of beautiful and valuable things for very nice prices.

Youngrazzy

Other stores are paying for their product. Goodwill legit overcharge for dollar tree stuff.

bigtopjimmi

Goodwill didn't just recently get dumpsters lol.Never mind over pricing stuff doesn't exactly keep the dumpsters empty.

Agreeable-Fudge-7329

Ok? But they are filling them with shit they don't even bring it because it's garbage. Like how did you miss simple reading and comprehension? And if it's overpriced, it won't sell to the general public. What you mean is that you can't make enough profits off of it reselling it....so to you it is.

Hutchison5899

Goodwill dies not exist for you ti make a profit. They exist to fund their jobs program, as explained in their mission statement. They are NEGLIGENT if they do not sell donations at market value. Your inability to make a profit is irrelevant.

Courtaid

Look. Another thread about high thrift store prices. Must be the 100th one this month.
