I’ve always found going super out of your way for the “best bagel shop” in nyc is a little wild when most bagel shops close by are better than anywhere in the country. Like sure if I’m running an errand by one of the famous shops I’ll grab one but I’m not huffing it to the Bronx for a bagel. That’s just me though…
I respectfully disagree with this, while I agree that the bagels/pizza at your average street corner in nyc are better than what you could find elsewhere in the country, there’s certainly a wide range of quality within nyc.
I'm not sure which bagel is the best in the city because I haven't scrutinized it the way I have pizza, where im more strongly opinionated about the tiers and differences. I would say that the best pizza is definitely in Brooklyn, whereas the bagels are probably better overall in Manhattan.
But, I would submit nominations for:
- David's Bagels (Grammercy) - my personal favorite
- Tompkins Sq Bagels (EV)
- Zuckers Bagels (Multiple)
- Murray's Bagels (Multiple)
- Bagelsmith (Williamsburg)
I'd say these are all in the top 25.
I'm curious to try the "new" H&H.
I've also heard but cannot confirm that Absolute Bagels (UWS), Utopia (Queens), and Zabars (UWS) are contenders for the top spot.
I think Leo's (FiDi), Bagel Seed (Multiple), and Bagel Point (Greenpoint) are overrated but not bad.

Pizza bagels. It allows you to have pizza in the morning, pizza in the evening, pizza at supper time. Essentially, putting pizza on a bagel allows one to have pizza at any time.
I hate this question as much as the best pizza
"The best pizza is one of the extremely numerous amazing pizza places that just happens to be close to my apartment" - every New Yorker

That being said I have waited for difara when Dom was still on the helm so different strokes ..
I get going out of the way for pizza, but bagels is where I draw the line. It just isn’t substantial enough of a meal to justify it.

You mean…. Bagel Bites?
Delicious, aren't they?
Unless you eat them before they were cool 😎
I live around the corner from BBC. It’s good, but not the best. Pop up bagel is the best quality bagel I’ve ever had
Obviously some place down your street run by Joe Schmoe who's been at it for 50 years.
Best Bagel on 35th
NYC Bagels best in the country if you don’t include Portland Maine. The true GOAT of the bagel world.
