Awww, that explains why I didn’t get to see it. We didn’t get access to “satellite” channels like that until 1996 or so. I totally would have watched the hell out of this show!
Funny how Pokemon came out a few years later and proved you can make a show that's just about fighting tournaments.
Not sure why they couldn't have done that here.
This was part of an action cartoon block on the USA Network. There were also shows based on Savage Dragon and Mortal Kombat. (Double Dragon may have been part of this too). And, yes, they were all terrible.
BTW, this cartoon is available on Tubi and Crunchyroll.
USA networks Cartoon Express. They carried shows like ninja turtles, mortal kombat and space ace and problem child. It was great for the time since it was a couple of years before Cartoon Network came around.
Why were all 90s American action cartoons this way? "Intrepid GoodGuys™, who stand for the ideals of patriotism, preservation of the status quo, and the American Dream, fighting against the evil BadGuys™, who want to take over the world and make it namelessly 'evil'! Violence is the means, but nothing 'violent' really happens, as there are no consequences whatsoever! Please buy our toys!"
Well, even though it's contrived, would it have killed the producers to put a little nuance into these shows? It's the reason why we still think fondly of X-Men and shows like this get forgotten; X-Men had at least some substance
In the case of Street Fighter, a lot of that stuff you mentioned could be blamed on the movie. It's common knowledge that the poster boy for Street Fighter is Ryu but when the movie was made Guile was the one who got center stage. I can't say why that decision was made but one thing I remember as a kid is that most of the kids I knew who played Street Fighter thought Ken was better than Ryu (the result of mild racism they weren't aware of at the time) even though they started as palette swaps and therefore were the same; at least at the time they were.
I was obsessed with all things Street Fighter in the early to mid 90s, even though I've never been better than "can beat story mode on Normal". This was must watch for me back then. There were SF edition GI Joe figures that were released around the same time, probably in conjunction with the cartoon. I had a few of them.
Legit respectable adoption of the source material that also injects some expanded plot. I’m not saying it’s 1:1 with the game, but it covered all the bases without turning into some derivative cartoon abomination *looks toward Double Dragon*

USA: We got Street Fighter the TV show! Awesome! Japan: Kids watching Chun Li shower
Seriously?! Didn’t know
It was decidedly more violent and adult, but you know parents bought it for their kids not knowing there were full on tits and ass in the shower
That you for letting me know such a thing existed.

Never knew this show existed
Hell yea boy, this was my jam back in the day. I really did forget about this one.
I remember it ran on USA Network

Love how they just give up nameing the characters.
Especially on Ken and Ryu. Did those boys dirty

Ahh so that's where the soundbite originated from

They had Balrog, in boxing gloves, using a computer while the other baddies look on. I will not hear further criticism of this high art.

You literally spelled it out, they had to present a simplified dichotomy for a younger audience and more importantly, sell lots of toys

Looks like the live action film and the anime had a terrible baby
This is delicious!
This was my shit
Everyone knows Ryu is the main character
Not in America!

SONIC BOOM!
Was way better than the movie
