usernames_suck_ok

Funny since most people who use "Karen" are white and always have been.

cactusJacks26

i’ve seen it from mostly white conservatives too lol

orincoro

That’s our word!

[deleted]

Eh, it was originally from retail POC used towards women who flex their white privilege to be shitty to retail workers. Since then it has devolved as a way to hate on women. I am a white woman, and have never really seen it as an attack on me because I'm white. But I have seen it used by sexist men as a way to put down women who speak up about being treated shittily. So it was originated as a way to call people out for their racism, but ended up being used as a sexist "microslur" (lmao, not sure how to phrase that, and not trying to equate it to actual slurs).

just_an_otaku7

exactly…

Gov_N_ur

Burn /r/actualpublicfreakouts is the most racist mainstream sub out there. Had to unsubscribe was destroying my mental well-being. They love posting videos of black ladies freaking out in fast food restaurants and then teetering on the idea of calling her a slur, but end up choosing a much more subtle method that anyone with eyes can see is racist.

smarmiebastard

Ah yes, the good ol dog whistle tactic.

burn_tos

It's a shame because r/publicfreakout has awful moderation so it's understandable that some would want a new sub, but that it devolved into a racist shithole is just sad.

C0vidPatientZer0

They love calling people "animals" but only people of a certain skin color. They also love advocating for everyone to carry a gun to shoot at "violent thugs" for any perceived inconvenience

Gov_N_ur

Exactly this. I would cringe at the sight of it.

Ironlord456

White people wanna be oppressed so badly

truelogictrust

no, they want to justify oppression by pretending to be oppressed

Drakeadrong

First one isn’t completely wrong. I’ve seen women in the right being called Karen for standing up for themselves. Calling it a racial slur is delusional though

kangaesugi

There are kind of two schools of people who use Karen. One says it to refer to middle aged WASP women throwing around their class and white privileges and leveraging their white womanhood to tread on others, particularly people in the service industry and Black people in general, and the other uses it refer to women who are bad and ruin my fun and also are my mother

TheVantagePoint

And the other (myself included) use it to describe a mindset that is not limited to any gender, sex, or race. Anyone can be a Karen.

sephsnova

I like to call male Karen's 'Chad's' I say, yeah we had a subway chad in here yesterday... coworker, chad? Me, Yeah, male karen...

CatW804

I've heard them called Kevins, as in "We Need to Talk About..."

MillieBirdie

I was on some sub about Karens and one of the highly up voted posts was calling someone a Karen because they left a bad review of a movie theater. Their complaints were that the hallways were dirty and smelly and that during the movie the LIGHTS IN THE THEATER STAYED ON. Like how is the bad review not justified at that point, idk. I've also seen people just post creepshots of random women doing nothing in public and make jokes about Karen hair and how they're probably racist. At a certain point the Karen meme went from a specific hairstyle to and white woman with hair.

armchairdetective

Exactly. Hard agree with this. Are there really people out here claiming that white people are victims of racial slurs...?

[deleted]

I’ve seen a lot of white people use it on people of color.

clearemollient

Lol it’s absolutely not a racial slur. I could see the argument for it being sexist, but not racist. There are a lot of times when women have been called Karen’s just for speaking up about something or standing up for themselves. I see it all the time with women in government or women authority figures. Overall I’m not a huge fan of insults that typically only insult one gender, because it’s usually biased towards women. Like whore, slut, bitch, cunt, skank, etc. There’s not nearly as many sexist slurs used to put down/shut up men. I’m not saying “Karen” is nearly as insulting as those other sexist slurs, but I also don’t see why we really need *another* insult only directed at women.

The-DMs-journey

You can definitely call men cunts . It is not gender specific. You can call a man a pussy as well.

LosKebabos

I mean, since it's to the point where it's used as an insult every time a woman complains about something, you could argue that it's sexist, but I wouldn't call it racist.

trippedwire

Found the Karen.

Romero1993

White people, the most oppressed group of individuals.

Haxorz7125

*Ahem* I think you’re forgetting **gamers**

Slate_711

Stop white people from complaining? In a nation that is more than half white last I checked? (If American)

LevelOutlandishness1

And you know what? We won. I've never heard a white person complain about anything ever since 2017. Oh, there was one time, I overheard a young, white woman, who was my coworker, complain about how she was kind of disappointed that she couldn't find an orange highlighter in Wal-Mart. But my break was soon. And as I walked out to take it, the doors opened with a menacing *WOOSH!* I turned my head to the left, where she and the person she was conversing with was standing. We locked eyes for three, long, silent seconds. I said "Don't think I didn't hear what you said." "No, please!", she said, crumbling to her knees, tears in her eyes, her coworker in distress. "I need to be here, I need to support my mother, she can't take care of herself!" "I apologize, but you know what must be done.", I raised my hand. "Karen.", I said, with a boom that reverberated across the atmosphere. Then she was gone. She had evaporated back into dust as she came. I walked to my car to continue my break, then realized that this interaction took up the whole break.

Big_Stereotype

Calling someone a "Karen" is pretty played out and has some kinda weird misogynist undertones but it's not racist lol

Ill-Organization-719

It's funny how "Chad" has become a "good thing" and Karen is still bad.

Big_Stereotype

That's a good point. Although they have different origins. Chad is an incel thing, it's pretty easy to reappropriate.

[deleted]

Chad is ironic the way I see it. The punchline of ever gigachad meme is the “Chad” being egregious for no good reason.

[deleted]

It doesn’t. Anyone complaining about “Misogyny” when Karen’s used on a white woman by someone who isn’t white is being reductive, and saying it in bad faith.

Big_Stereotype

I'm not white and I cringe at that shit. It's very clearly a way to tell women to stfu. And I used to do door to door sales and have white housewives call the cops on me just for walking around the neighborhood, I'm not unfamiliar with the baseline phenomenon. But the word itself has been watered down.

[deleted]

That’s your life experience then, mines quite the opposite. I see misogyny all the time but the only time it’s ever called “Misogyny” is when it targets a white woman, and naturally the worst thing I’ve ever seen happen to a white woman was her accidentally using an expired coupon, which got her into a screaming fit at me and my co workers about how much we hate “Women” and how we are and how it’s baked in black culture. I saw this same woman a day later backing some skinhead up while he flung gendered racial slurs at some Asian girl who couldn’t have been older than 14, and trying to snatch her up before her parents stepped in. She said the same shit. The dad hated “Women” because he wouldn’t let her beat up a little girl. We can agree to disagree

Big_Stereotype

I'm not really sure that has to do with Karen being used as a shield to tell women to stfu, honestly. I definitely agree that racism is still an omnipresent issue. But I don't believe you that the worst thing you've ever seen happen to a white woman was using an expired coupon. I just don't see the connection to your thesis. If anything, it's conservative white guys who call women they think are just being annoying karens.

[deleted]

Again, agree to disagree

[deleted]

[deleted]

🤦‍♂️

[deleted]

r/nothingeverhappens

amitym

Yeah, better to call women who abuse service workers "Kens" instead. It will seem less misogynistic that way.

Runtyraven

Omg I literally saw that comment thread, I was surprised to see that one getting upvotes . For those curious a woman wanted a refund and asked mostly politely then got screamed at and cursed at when that was definitely not the way to react

BoneHugsHominy

TIL an out of control toddler-level temper tantrum laden with racist slurs and threats of violence but delivered by an adult is "just complaining bro!"

mrjoffischl

it’s not even always used toward white people

FrakTerra

Karen . . . Who let you back in the house ?!!!

kaiser_xc

It has definitely become a gendered slur. Just not a racist one. Also sometimes you just need a slur in your vocabulary and as far as they go this one is pretty inoffensive.

orincoro

Ok Kevin.

Heyo__Maggots

When you ask these same people who think Karen is a slur whether they use the word dick - which is also a name and a reference to the male body part - to describe people who are being jerks, they always wonder what that has to do with anything. They really can’t see the parallels or why someone would bring that up. I’ve seen plenty of posts here in reddit calling a dude a Karen. But again if you called someone a Dick, the same people complaining about the word Karen wouldn’t even think twice about it…

[deleted]

Victimhood fetish. So fragile!

Xander_PrimeXXI

I think of white women all the time but probably not in a very helpful way

[deleted]

Oh they’re sooooo oppressed.

windowtosh

K*ren

Daharon

Karen is becoming pretty misogynistic

lemonlevy

I use Karen to describe men & women of all races who are acting in a certain way.

SpunkedSaucetronaut

Anyone can be a Karen.

Jar_of_Cats

No you don't understand it means ignorant

Lowlife_Of_The_Party

God they want to be a victim so badly

Reno83

Karens can be any race or gender. It's sort of like calling someone a Boomer, or Millenial, they don't technically have to belong to those generational cohorts, it's just a blanket statement.

cameronroark1

GTFOH!🤪🙄😏😳🤨😐

[deleted]

Nah, before Karen we just called them for what they were: bitches

rodentbitch

Kind of proving their point? lmao

thegirlofdetails

No. The term Karen was used and was originally invented for entitled white women and the manipulative tactics they use on POC. White women do deal with misogyny but they still have white privilege. A great example of a Karen using her white privilege is Carolyn Bryant, against Emmett Till. Karens also use their tactics on their fellow women, who are not white. I realize the term has been bastardized somewhat to use against legitimate grievances white women and POC have, by white men. But “Karen” is not meant to be a slur, originally.

rodentbitch

I understand the origins of the word Karen, and that it's not a slur - but it's honestly used to denigrate any woman with genuine grievances now. There are so many white men co-opting social justice language as an excuse to be misogynistic towards white women.

thegirlofdetails

That’s actually true, and it’s not right that it’s *also* used in that way now.

[deleted]

Anyone who is an asshole to service workers is a Karen. Race and gender don't dictate it. Before we would call them a bitch or dick under our breath. Now we just say ok Karen to their face.

PianoInBush

Maybe it's not a great cultural norm, using people's actual first names to make fun of and stereotype. Imagine living your life, hurting no one and then having to deal with your name becoming synonymous with some shitty behavior. Name is at the core of identity. Names should be handled with care, especially considering that most people still don't really know that they can pick their own names and tend to stick with given names.

RubySplinters

Becky is more of a slur on white women

TheNi11a

It’s also my mom’s name. PC culture is out of control.
