Or unroll them and light the strip like a fuse. Or clobber the whole roll at once with a hammer… that was LOUD.
Kids today don’t know the joy of being given gunpowder as a toy and told to go play in the street.
I had one of these!! It was weighted perfectly so that when you through it high enough it would come down just right. Also, if you dropped it right from the fins.
Caps came in 5 rolls and in a small box, the corner store sold them.
When we didn't have fireworks, we'd take the entire box of caps and bang the tip of a baseball bat on it for the loud bang.
I hit a roll with a hammer as a kid and legitimately thought I made myself go deaf until my hearing came back. It was the one and only time I ever did that.
That's great!
I grew up in the city in the 70s. There was always at least 4 or 5 of us and it's how we made our own fun.
We spent a ton of time down at the railroad yard too, everyone referred to it as "the tracks."
We used to put all kinds of things on the tracks, like quarters, to see them get squashed or flattened out even more. We'd also hop the trains and ride them through a few other cities and towns.
Construction sites, trains and just about anything was at our disposal. I'm glad we all lived to talk about it!
My friends and I played a game we called train hopping. the trains used to move cars were always left parked by our complex, and we would just run from one end of the train to the other, jumping the gaps. We called the roof the hard level!
Once a cop chased us for playing on the train, but he was an old fat guy and fell between one of the jumps, and we stopped, turned around and started making fun of the guy lol I was only 9 at the time too
A neighbor kid and I hopped a freight train in Iowa thinking it wouldn't go very far. Ended up in western Nebraska with 2 extremely pissed off dads who drove out to pick us up. I was never so glad I didn't have my friends dad, he was this huge Okie that looked like Nick Nolte's even more alcoholic brother.
I got in so much trouble for bringing one of these to school.
First grade- they got the cops involved and made it out to be an “improvised explosive device”.
Cop didn’t want to waste his time doing that shit and ate the charges for me.
He kept my little atom bomb thing.
Never had one of these. Did have lawn darts, though. We would throw them straight up in the air and then see who could get it to land closest to their foot.
You put caps from a capgun into it, and when it hits the ground the cap explodes and it's exciting and loud. The one I had in 2002 came with a little parachute too. Not sure why it's on this subreddit as I remember buying mine brand new at the $2 shop with my pocket money as an 8 year old
It’s a cap bomb.
See the gap, and the spring; the top end is in sections. You can slide a paper cap (of course you’d do more) between the two parts, Toss it, and the impact would detonate the cap(s)
I can smell and feel that in the hand. This and the red and white water rockets that always land on the roof, are strong memories. Also, the styrofoam delta-wing airplanes you get at a dime store. They flew so damn well. Haven’t seen those since I was a kid?
We used to try to put 4 , 5 or 6 caps in it . That really made a nice big bang ! Also the smell after the caps exploded . We used to put the caps in the ground and set them off by rubbing with a dime
There is a hole in one fin that you can kinda see in the picture. Take a chunk of string and tie it to the hole.
Now it’s properly dangerous. You can start whirling that thing like a slingshot and get some real height.
Also, you gotta squeeze like 4-5 caps in there.
We threw one of these off a deck at night in Vermont. A bat located it and flew right into it. Ensuing explosion killed bat. We felt pretty bad about it.
1978 if I remember correctly
I remember thise but never saw them in action. Just the pistols and the robocop action figures had rolls of caps as did the Cops n Crooks weapons the action figures came with.
serious? you cut off a cap, put it in the gap and threw them in the air and they would make a bang.. it was just like snap pops .. some places sold the caps just as single squares cut to fit in these
Those were nearly mythical when I was young. Everybody seemed to have huge families the generation before mine, and amassed a stockpile of crazy toys. I found these in the old toy horde of various houses I think twice, and they were immediately confiscated. 😟
Gave some girl a ptsd flash back with one of these. It was way louder than expected. She dropped to the ground. Apparently, she had been in a shooting a week or 2 before... 6yo me didn't have too much fun with it after that.
weird story.. my great grandpaw was a gun smith, my family was a bunch of smiths which is why I learned blacksmithing .. after he passed, my parents moved grams to our house and we cleaned out her house.. I loved my paws basement workshop cuz it was filled with cuckoo clocks from Europe.. he repaired them along with guns..he had a bunch of blank ammo..dumb ass me hit one with a hammer.. obviously my parents freaked out.. it left enough of an impression that 40 yrs later i still have never fired a gun..
As a kid, I once glued a BB to the primer of a 12 gage shell and taped a penny over it with streamers on the back so it would always land correctly. I got in a lot of trouble for that. Toss in the air and run! Very loud.
i grew up with a dad who owned a shoot out the star fair game and got shot with lots of bbs ..id rather be hit with a bb than a frozen paintball.. yes Ive experienced both
I had one in 1956. My older brother wouldn't let me play with it because I scared the shit out of him one day by throwing it behind him. He was 7 yrs older than me.
I had one and got many years of use from it as a kid. Recently found a new one, and it broke within a week.
Pewter vs steel my friend.

The one I had was magnetic?

Turns out my uncle crafted the one I had; seems you were right about the die-casted fact. Ah over 30years ago.. I doubt I could get pictures.

This is the way! I got respect for wisdom man. Would you know anything about aether? Add me if you like.
also, no reruns and you can hunt for the easter eggs you hid.
literally weeks of entertainment.
Yes. I’m “paper” caps old lol.
The smell of paper caps was amazing. Just you mentioning them now brought it right back to me!
These could use both!
Stack the paper caps like 10x
That’s why I really only ever used the paper ones with these. Just because you can use the other ones doesn’t mean the paper ones aren’t better. XD
Did you ever tear the paper ones as a kid and accidentally tear at the powder and burn your finger
Or unroll them and light the strip like a fuse. Or clobber the whole roll at once with a hammer… that was LOUD. Kids today don’t know the joy of being given gunpowder as a toy and told to go play in the street.
My 8 year old grandson has. I found it and showed"em how to do it. Along with throwing firecrackers and purple stick bottle rockets.
Or getting dry ice from the ice cream man and put it into a Gatorade bottle for some outside adventures
We used to run our fingernail along the paper ones
Yeah I definitely remember ripping individual caps for these off the 8-cap circles for the revolvers
Yeah but did you ever try shooting one with a slingshot in a random high arc in your neighborhood and hear a car alarm go off?
I hate to break it to you but I had those and I'm not even 30
I had one of these!!
I’d hit a whole roll with a hammer and get fire.
That was how my relationship with tinnitus first began.
Back then tinnitus didn't exist, because everyone heard gods screech.
I've never heard it called that...it made me giggle
I hit a roll with a hammer as a kid and legitimately thought I made myself go deaf until my hearing came back. It was the one and only time I ever did that.
I did in the garage so it would seem louder dumb
You could put a couple in this for a little more oomph.
I used to tape the rolls onto some train tracks behind the townhouse complex I lived in as a kid. It was awesome.
That's great! I grew up in the city in the 70s. There was always at least 4 or 5 of us and it's how we made our own fun. Quarters? Look at Daddy Warbucks LOL! We used to put pennies on the tracks. I remember some old guy telling us we could derail the train doing that.
Funny you bring that up because the old timers in the neighborhood used to say it would derail a train too.
ha ha fat chance.
Our response was GTFOH LOL!
My friends and I played a game we called train hopping. the trains used to move cars were always left parked by our complex, and we would just run from one end of the train to the other, jumping the gaps. Damn. Never thought of that.
I'd totally forgotten about this! Memory unlocked!
I remember they weighed twice as much as expected, catching one with your forehead is not recommended.
they were the safer version of lawn darts
Right I was gonna say.. I’m old enough for the unsafe darts.. or Jarts if you prefer
Had one of these, but it seemed like playing with it always devolved into hitting the paper caps with a rock. Good times.
Oh man! Wow! Never thought I’d see this gizmo again. Used to just flat out throw them at your enemies.
Back when “bust a cap” had a totally different meaning
😂 so true
These were bad ass
I can still smell this picture
The things we had before game consoles and tablets.
My tablets were full of paper to write on I remember the faint lines in the middle so you could tell how to do lowercase and capital letters 😂✌️
I practiced my airfield bombing with these
Relatively speaking, a lot of work for a little payout.
Timeless life lesson.
Still worth it though. At least back then
I got in so much trouble for bringing one of these to school. First grade- they got the cops involved and made it out to be an “improvised explosive device”. Cop didn’t want to waste his time doing that shit and ate the charges for me. He kept my little atom bomb thing.
These were for the serious caps kids
I'm still saving up my Marlboro Miles for something this cool!
I had this and the plastic grenade that had basically one of these inside it.
Old enough to remember these 🥲
That looks like a WW I weapon to me, like something you'd drop out of a biplane.
Never had one of these. Did have lawn darts, though. We would throw them straight up in the air and then see who could get it to land closest to their foot.
what is it?
You put caps from a capgun into it, and when it hits the ground the cap explodes and it's exciting and loud. The one I had in 2002 came with a little parachute too. Not sure why it's on this subreddit as I remember buying mine brand new at the $2 shop with my pocket money as an 8 year old
It’s cause you are old
thank you
I once took a hammer to a rolled up full pack of caps. Hammer flew out of my hands and sounded like a fired a shotgun. Good times.
Holy shit, I forgot about those.
Yes that old… loved ‘em..cap pews & hitting them with rocks too! Such innocent times!
We never got one of these. We just used rocks too. I liked the smell too.
I had slightly older friends who had Lawn Darts... I mean, what could possibly go wrong 😕
parents never let us play with lawn darts .. supposedly one of my uncles friends died from them ..
Back when cap guns weren’t enough
Grew up with these. Cap missile. If I remember correctly it used paper caps.
Dad was pissed when we tried to play badminton with it. The rackets didn't do so well.
so what is that?
It’s a cap bomb. See the gap, and the spring; the top end is in sections. You can slide a paper cap (of course you’d do more) between the two parts, Toss it, and the impact would detonate the cap(s)
ohh thanks
![gif](giphy|kd9BlRovbPOykLBMqX) Wow I remember having one of those!
Old school butt plug?
I can smell and feel that in the hand. This and the red and white water rockets that always land on the roof, are strong memories. Also, the styrofoam delta-wing airplanes you get at a dime store. They flew so damn well. Haven’t seen those since I was a kid?
I loved the little balsa planes that wound the propeller with a rubber band
They were called Delta Darts. https://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/cmt/cmt2314-18.htm
Omfg yes we played with them till we were out of caps. And this one used the caps on the roll the paper ones.
We used to try to put 4 , 5 or 6 caps in it . That really made a nice big bang ! Also the smell after the caps exploded . We used to put the caps in the ground and set them off by rubbing with a dime
are paper caps being made? the old version
I seem to recall Greenie stickem caps !
There is a hole in one fin that you can kinda see in the picture. Take a chunk of string and tie it to the hole. Now it’s properly dangerous. You can start whirling that thing like a slingshot and get some real height. Also, you gotta squeeze like 4-5 caps in there.
Spending a LOT of time trying to stack more and more caps in there!
Holy fuck whaaaat
Yes
So fragile. Had many of these neighborhood wars with them being flung at each other.
These were around, but I think the ones with plastic fins and elastic bands holding the two pieces together were much more common in my day.
I member. Those were fun😊
I am not, but I did have one that was probably purchased at a flea market.
Use to get one of these every once in a while at the Ben Franklin store when i was a kid.
Yes, We used to throw these at each other. We were insane kids in the late 70's early 80s.
Core memory unlocked.
Thank goodness there is finally something I don’t remember.😝
😁
Yes, I am that old. Sigh...
Fuck I'm Old...
I have two of these.
yes that and lawn darts (jarts) with points were the real things i had growing up
You just transported me back in time 40 years.
I'll raise you lawn darts,🤣
I made my own with caps sandwiched between two washers and a nut and bolt to hold them together tight.
weaponized mini lawn dart with explosive warhead
Classic...I remember those
The picture was enough to make me smell caps again. Man I used to love that smell.
Introducing kids to the wonderful world of bombs since 1942 💥
Oh yeah. Went through a loop of caps in a single day.
Amazing the kind of simplicity that kept us entertained for hours vs the overstimulation kids get these days
We threw one of these off a deck at night in Vermont. A bat located it and flew right into it. Ensuing explosion killed bat. We felt pretty bad about it. 1978 if I remember correctly
Too expensive I only had my foot. lol. …mostly kidding. Kinda mostly. Lol
I went though a few of them when i was a kid!
One of my favorite Christmas presents. Those things were loud (when they worked)
No
Ever try launching them with a slingshot? Can’t aim worth a damn but …
I had these but never knew what they were. Always thought they were part of something else that I had lost.
Yep. I broke half a dozen of these on my concrete driveway
We made ours from scrap in the Philippines in the 70s.
Is that the first nerf football lol
old as a stick and straw
Who had time for these, we just smashed them on the ground with a rock.
Core memory unlocked!
Loved these. So much fun.
I remember these! I'll see your cap bomb and raise you a roll cap cowboy revolver!
Damn, now I’m really feeling old, I had these & they made them in plastic also…
Two words. Lawn Dart.
Oh shit🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 core memory released
Loved these things, and the smell.
I still have one from the 90's that is shaped like a hand grenade.
I never saw those.. I had these in the 80s .. did they use caps ??
Dang. I haven't seen or thought of that in forever. Thanks for the memories.
Mine had a plastic tail
Memory unlocked. Thank you.
Let's see how many caps can fit in it? The water bottle rockets were fun too
Loved those things....and cap guns.
Kid bombs were cool.
I am
Meh. We made our own from a nut and two bolts.
"I'll buy you a toy if you shut the fuck up while I finish grocery shopping." *the toy*
WOW! Now that's a blast from the past! (pun intended!)
I remember thise but never saw them in action. Just the pistols and the robocop action figures had rolls of caps as did the Cops n Crooks weapons the action figures came with.
It's a wonder any of us are alive today. :)
kids today would never understand what we endured for fun
Cap bomb. They still sell them but they’re smaller.
I collected then in 1954 I thought they were so cool!! (I was 11)
Is that a metal feathercock? Seems kinda dangerous
Yep, I’m that old.
Windshield's worst enemy. At least my dad's lol

Memory unlocked
That and yard darts ..was a good day!
I'm "paper caps" old too, but wtf is this? I thought it was a lawn dart or something. Clue me in!
serious? you cut off a cap, put it in the gap and threw them in the air and they would make a bang.. it was just like snap pops .. some places sold the caps just as single squares cut to fit in these
Wow!!! You just dug up memories that I haven't thought about in 35 years.
This is awesome. I have not seen one of those in ages. So much fun
Cap blaster.
I loved these things. We’d play war and use them like Grenades
I broke all mine throwing them into the air as high as possible.
This sub continues to unlock memories of things I've long forgotten. Thanks. Oh and fuck I'm old because yes I had one of these!
For sure, I'm that old.
no
Hells yeah..
These things always smacked the ground louder than the snaps were.
Can’t tell you the times I scared my mother and grandmother with this guy!
You can only fit so many before they no longer pop
![gif](giphy|YPiRL7UhaMhy|downsized) Im this old....gimme that box of caps
Love those, spent a lot time with it when I was erh, hmmm, young!
Mine was plastic with a metal mechanism. Pretty sure it came in a cereal box. Paper caps and a magnifying glass was also great fun.
Those were nearly mythical when I was young. Everybody seemed to have huge families the generation before mine, and amassed a stockpile of crazy toys. I found these in the old toy horde of various houses I think twice, and they were immediately confiscated. 😟
If by old you mean 24yo yes I am.
We would stand the paper roll on its side and hit it with a hammer.
Yes!
I loved these!!!!
Gave some girl a ptsd flash back with one of these. It was way louder than expected. She dropped to the ground. Apparently, she had been in a shooting a week or 2 before... 6yo me didn't have too much fun with it after that.

Omggggg. I *AM* THAT OLD!!
Why yes I that old where are the paper caps to slide thru it
And when it broke would get a rock and bang the paper caps with the rock to made them pop.
As a kid, I once glued a BB to the primer of a 12 gage shell and taped a penny over it with streamers on the back so it would always land correctly. I got in a lot of trouble for that. Toss in the air and run! Very loud.

Yep
A Cap Dart. I had them.
10 snaps at once will blow it in half.
BombCap!
Used to love playing with those things until one hit my dad’s 1970 land yacht windshield and shattered it.
Yep. Those and cap loaded “grenades”.
I can smell this picture.
i looooved the smell.. it was the smell of summer
Sold at the dollar general.
I used to take those and fuse them with the lawn darts. The old lawn darts the metal ones
OMG, I forgot about those!
Lasted allot longer if you used the parachute
dropped correctly it sounded like a gun
