I think at one time it was sold in a plastic toilet as well!!!
In the UK 'potty' also means 'mad' or 'daft'. People still say "it's driving me potty" when something is annoying them.
Did it? I don't remember that. Most of my toys like this I would only get to play with once then they would disappear.... I probably got the putty stuck all over the house lol
I never had it, but we used paraffin wax from the top of jam preserves to transfer cartoons from the weekly colour funnies. Rub the wax all over the cartoon then place paper over top and work a spoon over the whole surface pressing hard and peel off the mirror image. That was a good one for rainy days.
We tried making our own silly putty in high school chemistry class. Turns out that one of the ingredients, dichlorodimethylsilane, is somewhat dangerous and reacts with moisture in the air. Almost set the hood on fire.
Definitely. Lawn darts. Loaded Estes rockets with gunpowder and other explosives to see what would happen. Used to jump our bikes like Evel Knievel and didn't wear helmets. Rode in the back of pickup trucks.
Good times.
Absolutely! chemistry sets, mercury thermometers, bb guns, all types of projectiles and even the merry-go-round, lots of injuries from that not to mention it was rusty so we always had to be up on our tetanus shots. Everyone smoked around us too ! Yeah I seriously don't know what they were thinking with those lawn darts though...crazy! WE are survivors!

Then..
“ In 1949, toy store owner Ruth Fallgatter came across the putty. She contacted marketing consultant Peter C. L. Hodgson (1912–1976).[17] The two decided to market the bouncing putty by selling it in a clear case. Although it sold well, Fallgatter did not pursue it further. However, Hodgson saw its potential.[1][5]
Already US$12,000 in debt, Hodgson borrowed $147 to buy a batch of the putty to pack 1 oz (28 g) portions into plastic eggs for $1, calling it Silly Putty. Initial sales were poor, but after a New Yorker article mentioned it, Hodgson sold over 250,000 eggs of silly putty in three days.[5] “

Good read. I suggest it.
So i was a late 90s kid , all my brothers were 80’s babies, i LOVED silly putty but i never got the chance to do this and see if it works… now i feel like im late to my own life.
I love the illustration, but most newspapers these days use ink that doesn't allow silly putty to transfer anymore. One more childhood memory gone.
I saw an experiment where a huge ball of silly putty was dropped from a tower and it acts like a non newtonian fluid, it shatters on impact because for that brief moment of impact it solidifies.
During the Dot.Com era one of the guys in my lab found an amazing deal, so I bought a reasonable amount: 2 pounds.
I created a silly putty sculpture garden for my cube.
You know, I saw some comments about how Silly Putty bounces, but I never thought to try that. And biting into it? That never even occurred to me! I guess I was the boring kid just stretching it and copying comics, while everyone else was turning it into a snack or a bouncy ball. 😂
I can still conjure up that smell. F! I’m old!
Yup, Me too! Isn't that wild we can even remember the smell lol
For sure. It was almost addicting!
I came here to say just that!!!!! Nothing like it - LOL
Don’t ever try to taste it. It was awful. I got the bright idea to see if I could make a teeth impression. (In my defense, I was 8.)
Same!
Who didn’t 😅
I remember the taste being like that puddy they use for teeth molding at the dentist
Not too different..Lol
You’re right. When mine were done recently, I knew that foul taste from somewhere, but I just couldn’t place it. Thanks.
I wonder if it was just that?!?!
Oh My! Some of the toys we had were dangerous and probably toxic ! lol I think you had a good imagination, that thought never occurred to me lol
That “scrunchy“ feeling on the teeth!
Exactly. I can still feel and hear it, even though it’s been more years then I really want to say, or think about.
I LOVED Silly Putty!
Me too, I was a simple kid, things like this would give me so much enjoyment.
I put it in my kid's Christmas stockings a couple years ago. Kids are 37, 33
Ha ! Nice! Didn't know they still made it.
In the UK it was marketed as 'Potty Putty'. Great fun.
Really ? lol I wouldn't want to play with 'Potty Putty' what were they thinking ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
I think at one time it was sold in a plastic toilet as well!!! In the UK 'potty' also means 'mad' or 'daft'. People still say "it's driving me potty" when something is annoying them.
That's interesting, I didn't know that... makes more sense to me!
Also made a great bouncing ball.
Did it? I don't remember that. Most of my toys like this I would only get to play with once then they would disappear.... I probably got the putty stuck all over the house lol
Bounced high! Just like those “super balls!“
I didn't realize. We used to love superballs, we would try to bounce them as high as the roof!
I never had it, but we used paraffin wax from the top of jam preserves to transfer cartoons from the weekly colour funnies. Rub the wax all over the cartoon then place paper over top and work a spoon over the whole surface pressing hard and peel off the mirror image. That was a good one for rainy days.
I like your imagination! I wouldn't have thought to do that.
Taught to us by Depression era parents, so I'm guessing it goes back.
Something kids aren’t allowed to do much of anymore…Imagination.
True... that's a shame
The Sunday funnies were the best. They were in color!
Weren't they... those little things that made us happy! I am glad we grew up when we did.
Silly Putty and the comic section was a good start to my day!
I recently bought a miniature one for my kid. It is unfortunately not the same.
Really? I guess you'd need a comic strip newspaper to go with that. I haven't come across a real newspaper in.... wow a long time! too long.
I could forgive being the texture of a sweaty ballsack, or the color, but they chose to do both. They knew.
I know they couldn't have improvised a little more
Pull and fold, pull and fold, pull and fold and it would collect up air bubbles. Them smash it and it farted, 6 year old me thought that was hilarious
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
I had this LOL Fun till it got stuck in shaggy carpet
Yeah that 70's shag carpet was the worst lol
Silly Putty + Sunday Comics section. GOOD TIMES for real!!
That' was living, innocent times... fun times! It didn't take much to make us happy.
Skeletor and I would stretch our victims!
That reminds me of stretch Armstrong... never liked that doll - too weird for me.
Those are worth a small fortune these days, if you can locate one. They didn't hold up well!
Really, I wonder what that stuff was made of b/c kids used to put it in their mouths and eat it!
We don’t really know why we did it, just that we could
exactly!
[удалено]
Yeah... I can almost smell it too
I can smell it!
Me too!
Nostalgia hits hard with this one!
It sure does!
I spent hours playing with it when I was a kid. Best I remember if you made a ball with it that would bounce?
Hmm, Something tells me.... no, I don't think so - I think it would land with a THUD!
I stand corrected... YES IT BOUNCED TOO!!!!
I thought this was correct. Thank you 😊
We tried making our own silly putty in high school chemistry class. Turns out that one of the ingredients, dichlorodimethylsilane, is somewhat dangerous and reacts with moisture in the air. Almost set the hood on fire.
Are you serious!?!? We were a tough generation, we have the bruises and scars to show for our childhood! Geez....
Definitely. Lawn darts. Loaded Estes rockets with gunpowder and other explosives to see what would happen. Used to jump our bikes like Evel Knievel and didn't wear helmets. Rode in the back of pickup trucks. Good times.

It tastes horrible
Ha Ha... Oh My, I wouldn't know - I was a picky eater when I was little lol

How interesting is that?!? thank you for taking time to post that!

For sure!

No don't be silly... they still sell it! But now its in a less toxic form - lol You deserve to buy yourself some putty and have a good time!
The good people of reddit never let me down
Yes!!
It has been so long since I thought of that. Had to borrow a Sunday paper to copy the color comics.
We would fight over the sunday comics, such innocent times - being excited about the sunday paper and a egg of silly putty
Glow in the dark was my favorite.
Now that's cool but that came out after I was already older, Get concept though!
Man that brought back a lot of memories and the smell
Yeah everyone still remembers the smell lol
That is how we cut and pasted when I was your age!
Love your comment!
Leave an open blob on the sofa and expect a beat-down.
For sure!
Silly Putty!
An oldie but goodie!
This is how we entertained ourselves when I was little.
It didn't take much, we had imagination back then and we used it!
It's been awhile since I did that
Yeah... these people made a fortune off this silly stuff!
Note: Doesn't work well on iphones and ipads.
lol I know... why is it still around today, what are kids doing with it?
Our generation was so easily entertained. That wouldn’t fly with today’s kids. 🤣
Oh Absolutely not! Kids today are more sophisticated but I'll tell ya, our generation had imagination!
I loved that stuff.
ME too!
It was better with color funny paper though.
I can smell that
I'm all about thst

Your kidding? that is amazing... what the heck is in that stuff - geez smh
Wow
I loved it and my kids loved it. We threw it everywhere to see if it would stick.
Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun with this stuff lol
Whoa man! Major flashback. 🤯
I remember copying a picture of Leif Garrett with that
we used to love that song, 'I was made for dancin''! I was also a huge Andy Gibb fan
that Putty looks Silly!
Silly Putty. Cool!
Silly Putty!! Yes we did this as kids.
Another fun Non-Newtonian Fluid... When it sits, it slowly flows but, hit it hard enough and it breaks... Fun times..!
I had fun with this stuff until it absorbed too much ink. 😜
Yeah then it was shot
Silly Putty! I went through a lot of those eggs!
The best part of Sundays….comics in color and Silly Putty!
Two things so simple and fun, I loved my childhood
During the Dot.Com era one of the guys in my lab found an amazing deal, so I bought a reasonable amount: 2 pounds. I created a silly putty sculpture garden for my cube.
Wow!
Egg? Got mine years before there was any egg! It came in a blue plastic container 1-3/4” in diameter and 1/2” tall. Now that’s old!
Great comment!
Loved that stuff!! Take prints from the funnies like in the photo and then roll it up in a perfect sized ball and it would bounce.
You know, I saw some comments about how Silly Putty bounces, but I never thought to try that. And biting into it? That never even occurred to me! I guess I was the boring kid just stretching it and copying comics, while everyone else was turning it into a snack or a bouncy ball. 😂
Can we still buy this stuff???
Yeah, I see that you can, I googled it!
Cool beans! TY
I’m sure I’m not the only one that got this in the couch cushions.
oh No! I would have been grounded for that!
Why did they downvote you for that comment....
Silly puffy
Silly PUTTY
Hahaha
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Oh haha my bad. Puffy! Putty!
but that is how kids would say it, "Puffy" lol
My favorite
I just used gray clay.
Is that a Calvin and Hobbes comic I see? I can smell that picture...😅
YES! You have a great eye! Calvin and Hobbs were MY FAVORITE!!!!
