Shin Godzilla didn’t make waves here like Minus has so unprecedentedly done. I imagine a 4K/Blu-ray release will be moderately rushed to (literally) cash in on the popularity in the next few months or so. Just my assumption of course.

Constant_Carrot_8945

Shin was good in it's own way, never seen Godzilla use his fin and tail, that's unique and should be shown as one of Godzilla's abilities he would be very dangerous

Difficult_Wasabi_619

You've got it backwards. The more popular, the longer till it hits stream and physical copies. I'm guessing you're too young to know the phrase "Straight to VHS/DVD" There will be pirated physical copies available before they even announce a release or a date.

TaskenLander

I’m a Steven Seagal fan… OF COURSE I’m familiar with the term “straight to VHS/DVD”. Also — I’m 83.

Other-Fly4079

What a comeback haha. You sir would have been 14 years old when the original Godzilla came out in 1954. That's awesome to think about.

DylanMcGrann

For a normal movie yes, but Toho is notoriously slow to release their movies in the U.S. after a theatrical run. It took Toho almost a *whole year* to release *Shin Godzilla* in the U.S. after its short theatrical run. So I think u/TaskenLander is actually correct and *Godzilla: Minus One* will be released much sooner after it’s run this time around.

theCoolestGuy599

Upwards of a year, possibly even longer. Shin Godzilla didn't go to DVD/Blu-ray for something like 8 months in Japan - internationally it took even longer for a physical release. I would anticipate a similar timeline for the Japanese physical release, so likely sometime around July next year. What happens outside Japan though is currently a big question mark. This was the first time Toho themselves distributed the film in theaters worldwide; usually they've only released the films in Japan and then waited for other companies to license the film from them for theaters and then home media. However, Toho has had a history of locking down domestic physical releases to Japan and Japan only. So this is kind of uncharted waters for everyone outside of Japan. Either this will also be the first time Toho makes the physical copy available worldwide, with subtitles and maybe even dub tracks, or they will also wait for companies to reach out to them and license the physical copy. If Toho actually releases the physical copy worldwide we could see it as early as July. If not, it'll most likely take at least a year (if not longer) for companies to license it, dub it in the appropriate language, and then release it.

manoroid85

Is that Godzilla taking a nuclear shit on the world?

DinoGaming1003

It's a reference to Neon Genesis Evangelion

Droideka475

I second that :_{

Plenty_Anywhere8984

I triple that

Faithlesspriest

Ugh, I need my fix! I saw it once in theaters, and now I want to watch it again. I would love to see it at home where I can crank up that volume! (not that the theater was quiet). Bonus if they release it in 3d!!

Constant_Carrot_8945

Is there something wrong with the film what's your view

DNAngel23

Did Shin Godzilla launch on iTunes/Google Play Store?

Old_Basket_7501

It is. I just bought it 3 days ago on iTunes for 4.99

GundamBebop

You didn’t buy it you rented it lol

Old_Basket_7501

lol technically yes, I don’t physically own it. But fr that was the price it’s still in my “collection”

GundamBebop

Not a bad price tbh. Cheaper than Final Wars was on my old PSP lol

theCoolestGuy599

It might have, Im not too sure myself, but if it did it's extremely likely that was due to Funimation's licence. I don't know if Toho themselves ever put Shin up digitally outside of Japanese stores.

CellophaneRiot

They did. It is available on all streaming platforms as Subtitled or English Overdub

Constant_Carrot_8945

Do you think it will be in both languages

theCoolestGuy599

If you mean Japanese and English, it's hard to say. It depends on who gets the license. Funimation got the license for Shin Godzilla and they made an in-house English dub. If they get the license again it's possible they will dub it, however that will delay the release by a significant amount. If a more boutique label acquires the license, such as Criterion, I'd guess the chances are very low they'd make a dub. Some companies prefer to present the film as it was intended, and since Toho distributed the film themselves in theaters and didn't make a dub some companies might want to present it as Toho did. Some companies also just might not have the resources, or want to spend the resources, to make a dub recording. Besides an English dub, I'm not familiar at all with if Toho made a dub for international release. If they did then it might be included, if the licensor wants it.

EconomyProcedure9

Yeah this is uncharted territory. Not to mention several stores have almost gotten rid of DVD/Blu-Ray in stores. Best Buy is getting rid of them by 2024, Targets section is tiny, and even Walmarts section is much much smaller than in years past (plus not even sure if they did Black Friday movie deals at all).

Foreign_Rock6944

I feel like Toho may very well distribute it worldwide considering the reception it got. But what about streaming? How does that work for a movie like this?

theCoolestGuy599

Typically streaming is still reliant on licensing agreements. In the case of Shin Godzilla, I know that you were able to rent the film on Amazon Prime, but that was due to Funimation licensing the film from Toho and putting their version up on Prime (outside of Japan mind you). The MV films have gone up and down on various streaming services due to the licensing agreements with Toho and Warner Brothers/Legendary. Streaming also gets complicated because different countries might have different streaming arrangements through various companies. It's entirely possible that Minus One goes to Netflix, for example, but only for Japanese users (which would be able to be viewed with a VPN). But there's no guarantee Toho pushes it worldwide and even if they did it might be up on various streaming services in different regions. As for the physical copy, I suppose we'll just have to wait and see. Though, if they do release it worldwide themselves, I suspect the price will be matched to overinflated Japanese blu-ray prices. Due to how the Japanese physical media industry works, there's no way Toho releases the film for cheaper prices in other regions. We're either paying at least double, maybe triple, what blu-rays cost or we're waiting for someone to license the film.

Foreign_Rock6944

I see. Thank you so much for the detailed info!

NoProgress9436

I had shin on dvd 4 months after the theaters. It was a wide release.

Stunning_Giraffe_348

I thought Warner Brothers did this release their name is attached for the theatrical released at least in the U.S. I thought.

theCoolestGuy599

I don't recall Warner Brothers's title being attached to Minus One at all. Toho distributed this film worldwide themselves, which I believe is the first time this has happened in the franchise.

Stunning_Giraffe_348

I guess I was incorrect. I saw that somewhere, but I guess wherever I saw it was incorrect.

Jaden_Cutcher8599

I'm from India, they didn't distribute the film themselves here, and PVR hasn't licensed it yet, I wanna watch the film, I don't know what's going on, I've been checking once a week since last month when the initial reviews came out saying it's good

theCoolestGuy599

They probably just decided not to release the film in your region, which really sucks. At this point you'll most likely have to wait for a physical release, whenever that may be.

paperbuddha

Feb or March, I’d guess.

Pkmatrix0079

In the US? Probably Q4 2024 at the earliest.

uziLEANuzi

This absolutely blows. No theatre in town and everyone that went to the city to see it are talking about it but nobody else can see wtf went down for an entire year. Japan should be ashamed ngl, what an absolute blunder. I will now go illegally stream this because of the absolute sad handling by the toho.

Difficult_Wasabi_619

Next year for Xmas

Smok1n_Ace

wow a year? really! I would have expected this to release sometime before GvK2.
