As per the article, the 309GB size is literally only if you download the entire CoD HQ and every game that it includes, including MW2, MW3, and Warzone. Meaning that's if you choose to download literally 4 whole games alongside BO6. It only lists that size on the store page because you have the option to download *up to* 309GB through CoD HQ, but BO6 requires *significantly* less. If you're *just* installing BO6, it's probably gonna be closer to like 70-90GB.

Meddel5

Was about to comment this ^ they are employing texture streaming which is why the download is less than half of cold wars size

David-J

Where does it say that?

Meddel5

In their statement about being required-online they stated one of the reasons is because they are using texture streaming, idk the source off the top of my head bro just google it

flappers87

I think you're confused... texture streaming isn't streaming textures from the internet. It simply allows them to dynamically control the size of the textures being saved to memory. All the modern COD's have texture streaming options. Public engines like Unreal/ Unity also support texture streaming. [https://docs.unrealengine.com/4.27/en-US/RenderingAndGraphics/Textures/Streaming/Overview/](https://docs.unrealengine.com/4.27/en-US/RenderingAndGraphics/Textures/Streaming/Overview/) [https://docs.unity3d.com/es/2019.4/Manual/TextureStreaming.html](https://docs.unity3d.com/es/2019.4/Manual/TextureStreaming.html)

DICK-PARKINSONS

Any idea why texture streaming would be the reason the game is required to be always online? https://www.eurogamer.net/call-of-duty-black-ops-6-always-online-including-campaign-due-to-continuous-texture-streaming

flappers87

Right, so that's slightly different than just texture streaming, it's called on demand texture streaming (ODTS). ODTS will dynamically download higher quality textures. Normally this is optional in games that support it... but looks like they are enforcing it in this game. It's quite a big difference between ODTS and standard texture streaming. One actually goes online, the other doesn't.

David-J

Someone already replied to you. No game streams the textures remotely. It's technically impossible.

How can these idiots justify this stupid decision to not even include textures. Any normal game gets their shit together and compress their files. You could literally save your customer 50-60% of that install size.

Cyshox

I agree that compression makes sense and a small storage footprint of games is preferable, but to be fair, it's not that easy. First off, BO6 will probably be around 100-150GB. For big AAA titles that's not that uncommon these days. The 300+ GB includes Warzone, MW2, MW3 & all Language Packs. The fact that all of these combined are around 300GB is one of the few advantages of CoD HQ. Without the overlap - if you had to install everything separately - you would probably end up with 500+ GB total. The game does include textures. Just a part of it will be streamed on-the-fly. It streams fine detail for high LODs. Without texture streaming, said detail wouldn't be in-game as it would inflate the filesize drastically. This is not the first time CoD does this btw. I think the texture streaming option was introduced in MW2019. The lack of compression also affects audio files. I remember them being huge in MW2019 & BOCW. The reason why it's uncompressed is because 100+GB are deemed fine nowadays and it allows to save some overhead. Decompression isn't cheap, especially on PC hardware without dedicated decompression acceleration (like in Xbox & PlayStation consoles). To squeeze out most of the engine and make it perform better on older hardware, minimizing decompression tasks can help a lot. I do believe this is the main reason why many CoD assets are uncompressed. It just helps pushing the limits while also benefiting older hardware.

BoyWonder343

Yes, surely the game just doesn't include textures and it's not the internet misinterpreting something. It couldn't be that though, The Internet would never step in when they have no idea what they're talking about like saying "You could literally save your customer 50-60% of that install size by doing compression".

narfjono

That can't be just BO6. Catcha article title as usual. Oh look, it literally starts with: "Activision has clarified Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 isn't 309GB after all - or at least, you can download the core of it for less." Anyway, glad I gave up on this series before MWII 2.0. Just an absolute no thank you department. There's too many other more interesting and innovative games out there (and coming soon) that not only look great, but also don't take up near this still bizarrely huge install space to begin with. Good luck out there, CoD heads.

You can? As far as I'm aware at least on Bnet, but you can install or uninstall any of the games and specific modes.

Evz0rz

He might mean that because MW2 and 3 are interconnected there’s a lot of modes in 3 that won’t work without 2. I know this because just recently I wanted to clear up some space so I thought “I’ll just uninstall MW2 multiplayer since I don’t play it any more”. Went it to MW3 multiplayer and said I couldn’t play it until I installed the “missing files” which turned out to be MW2 multiplayer

xworfx

Yeah that’s not the case at all.  I have mw2 uninstalled and can play any mw3 mode/map including the mw2 maps.

Evz0rz

I mean I literally just went through the issue yesterday. Maybe it’s not the case on each system or dependent on what mode you play?

masterchiefs

And what's the mode you weren't able to access?

dabocx

That option has existed for a while now at least on pc

BoyWonder343

Installing the game piece meal has been an option for 5 years now starting half way through the lifecycle of MW2019. >so it's not possible to split MW2 and 3, but that fucking garbage was 280 gigs on its own [Here is a video showing you how to manage your game files](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjZdCENKFI0) on console. You can do the same thing on any PC launcher.

BeardyDuck

>so it's not possible to split MW2 and 3 On what platform? Because on Steam, MW3 Campaign and Multiplayer are separate DLC listings that you can choose to install or not, likewise with MW2 Campaign, Co-op, Multiplayer, and Warzone.
