Beyond_Re-Animator

These are great bands

CandleMakerNY2020

Silversun opening for my personal FAVORITE BAND OF ALL TIME “Third Eye Blind” on the first Summer Gods Tour in 2017 was such a vibe!!! Then 3eb with Jimmy Eat World in 2019 was pivotal and amazing. Havent seen them since then HOWEVER, they are on tour with Yellow Card & Arizona for SUMMER GODS 2024 and while I have no tickets yet and lawn is $75 + ea I have to make this happen. Its just 3 days after my 48th birthday and we only have 1 life to live. I highly recommend Third Eye Blind to anyone still sleeping on them. 🤘🏻 ** sorry for the rant. Your post just sent me into reminiscing mode andnI got the feels . (Also had a mini mushroom 🍄 dose yesterday for my depression) and its had me all whatever since then but thats okay. It did its job and Imma do mine. 🤙🏽

spacecadetglow_79

Oh yeah I like Third Eye Blind! And I’m seeing Silversun Pickups next week for the first time, soooo excited!

CandleMakerNY2020

🤘🏻 AWESOME SAUCE!!!

BeLikeDogs

You are all good! There is nothing better than passion for stuff that makes you feel alive! I mean in the end, what else is there?! It’s everything.

CandleMakerNY2020

BEST QUESTION EVER…. “What else is there”? It IS EVERYTHING 🏆

BiggMcLargeHuuge

Metric, from Canada, is a great alt band. Same too with Cannons, from Los Angeles, who are IMO about the most perfect alt-pop group I've heard since the Eurythmics were new way back in the day.

eejm

There are so, so many wonderful Canadian bands and solo acts that haven’t gotten big in the U.S.! Basia Bulat Cold Specks Basic White Hotel Mira Dan Mangan The Rural Alberta Advantage Chromeo (shush, they’re fun) The Barr Brothers Sam Roberts Band Hey Rosetta! Rhye Orville Peck

SnooStrawberries620

The Rural Alberta Advantage hasn’t gotten bigger than rural Alberta

Latter_Box9967

>Rhye He, uh, surprised me.

Typical-Horror-5247

I love the Barr brothers

TheVenusProjectB42L8

You're my tenderoni.

BiggMcLargeHuuge

The Lumineers are very good too. I always like that story-telling type of music, like the old country songs or the work of Harry Chapin.

BeLikeDogs

Me too, Bob Dylan is a biggie for me for this reason.

stratusmonkey

If you like Metric, try Ladytron. Or Warpaint, if you want trippier / trancier.

OtterPeePools

Just got into Metric recently , looks like I'll be into Ladytron now as well, thanks :), instantly went back to he 80's after just a brief listen. But lately I've been having fun playing some bands like Warpaint at different speeds. Not that the tempo needed adjustment but some of it sounds even trippier slowed down about 1/4 and a few sound even more awesome sped up 1/4.

blade944

First Aid Kit Aurora m83 elbow Snarky Puppy

GroupCurious5679

First Aid Kit are soooo good. So wholesome. And great live

najing_ftw

Sturgill Simpson is soooo good.

Check out Henry Rollins' show on KCRW. 2 hours of new music and old favourites every week: [https://www.kcrw.com/music/shows/henry-rollins](https://www.kcrw.com/music/shows/henry-rollins)

MaherMcCheese

I second The Warning. But I have to correct you on their age. They are 24, 22 and 19.

eejm

Beirut has some wonderful stuff.

TheReal8symbols

They're great!

eejm

I love their use of lesser-known instruments.

ImNotTheBossOfYou

King Gizz St Vincent Wet Leg (Breeders reimagined) Horsegirl

Scarif_Hammerhead

Second St Vincent and she has a new album out soon that I’ve pre ordered.

ImNotTheBossOfYou

Same

Thirty_Helens_Agree

St. Vincent - especially the stuff she did with David Byrne.

BeLikeDogs

Interest piqued, love David Byrne.

Frigidspinner

Here are three that I have enjoyed a lot Campy lesbian pop - Chapell Roan Existential folkish whimsy - Will Wood Twangy lava lamp rock - Khruangbin

CrouchingGinger

Tame Impala, The Smile (aka restructured Radiohead), Ministry, Jack White, The Black Keys. Granted Ministry has been around forever but their new stuff is great. Tool is still churning it out too. The Dead Weather is a Jack White‘s project as well and I love it.

BeLikeDogs

Love Jack White and didn’t know about this project. Thank you!

Ghola_Mentat

Juliette Armanet is a recent find for me. French pop.

RedditSkippy

I love this post! So many suggestions, because, yeah, I also struggle to find new music.

BeLikeDogs

It’s tough! And then I just give up and find myself in a multi-year rut. Most of these are new to me. Gonna be fun to check them out!

BigMoFuggah

If you like instrumental progressive metal, give a listen to Animals As Leaders

taueret

And try The Omnific. I saw them live supporting The HU and said to my friend "King gizz and Animals As Leaders had a baby"

BeLikeDogs

Love the Hu! Will check out The Omnific.

mchookem

Glass Animals, Gary Clark Jr., The 1975 (haha no for real), Jason Isbell, Tame Impala, Jack White, The Knocks, MGMT, CHVRCHES, Black Pumas, Khruangbin... you said any genre 😄 i could go on. i actually LOVE a LOT of today's music in the alt rock/indie pop realm. there are some REALLY cool bands and outstanding musicians out there and my playlists are probably evenly split between this millenneum and the last...maybe even a slight edge to post 2K 😮 by contrast...i don't have any hiphop/rap past like 2010 😄 i cannot stand the auto-tuned mushmouth that dominates today's hiphop sound, that genre peaked in the 90s as far as I'm concerned. and don't even get me started on today's bro-country 😠

BeLikeDogs

Lol and thank you!

Baker_drc

Check out Kendrick Lamar for rap if you haven’t already. It might be a generic ass recommendation/take but he’s the best one doing it rn. Good Kid M.A.A.D City and To Pimp a Butterfly are some of the best albums period

slade797

Lake Street Dive die Antwoord Volbeat Jason Isbell Sturgill Simpson Tyler Childers Sarah Shook and The Disarmers Nick Shoulders Lost Dog Street Band American Aquarium The Steel Woods Bhi Bhiman

OK, your Die Antword suggestion kinda sticks out here compared to the others....

mywomanisagoddess

This is more guitar punkish stuff: IDLES, Oh Sees (or Thee Oh Sees, or even OCs), Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, Amyl and The Sniffers, Viagra Boys Any set by the bands above that was recorded for KEXP in Seattle would be a nice introduction, the vids are on YT.

GenXylophone

came to say IDLES

orthopod

These are all solid recs. For radio, I prefer WPRB, or WFMU over KEXP. Check out Parquet Courts, but I suspect you already know about them.

BeLikeDogs

I love radio recs, the more the better. Been listening to WWOZ in New Orleans for different musical reasons. And I actually don’t know Parquet Courts, thanks!

Jebgogh

If you like any of these also try Fidlar or Yard Act

SomeCrazedBiker

Metal is still pushing boundaries.

orthopod

I love all the Doom/Stoner stuff coming out now. Bands like Bongzilla, OM (guys from Sleep), electric wizard, Bell Witch. I guess you could throw in Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs in there as well. I still listen to Melvin's,Kyuss, etc. I've been listening to Sleep since the 90's, and Dopethrone is still fantastic. When I'm feeling mellow, I listen to all the really chill stuff coming out of Africa. Mdou Moctar, Tinariwen, etc. Such a cool vibe.

BeLikeDogs

I really dig African music, will check out all of these.

grahsam

Agreed. There is a lot happening with metal genres, mostly because there is no money in it so they can do whatever they want.

SomeCrazedBiker

I find something cool and new to me every other week, it seems!

Android73

Check out Irontom.

Constant_Will362

There is a set of compilations that comes out every year called EUROVISION. Look it up on Spotify under playlists. It's all European Top 40 music, but it's not stale or stubborn or stupid like American Top 40. EUROVISION artists have a large spectrum of influences, world fusion and jazz and techno and Madonna-type music. If you want rock, look up the "Indie Rock Playlist" for each month of the year. Some of these tracks are very good alt-rock. For example Indie Rock Playlist June 2023. If you want hard rock / metal get the WEEDIAN playlists on Spotify. These are all new bands and this genre has never been more interesting imo.

BeLikeDogs

This is awesome, thanks!

Constant_Will362

Glad you like it.

TheReal8symbols

Maybe a little older than you're looking for but I recently discovered La Tigre (they started in '98 - how I hadn't heard of them until last year eludes me) and I can't get enough. Same singer/songwriter as Bikini Kill. Courtney Barnette sounds like Liz Phair from Exile in Guyville days, if you're into that style. Cat Clyde is really great too. Sorta folksy/bluesy but has a range of styles and serious chops. Miss Li (2000, so a little older than your 20 ask again) is another favorite of mine. ...if you haven't noticed I've been really into female artists lately...and I could probably list ten or twenty more.

peterparkerLA

It’s not La Tigre. It’s Le Tigre. And, no, I’m not being pedantic. Search engines won’t understand if you confuse ‘Le’ and ‘La’. French people won’t either.

TheReal8symbols

Wow, I totally thought I put "Le". Also, calm down

peterparkerLA

Oh, I’m just being silly. Sometimes, I forget that dry sarcasm doesn’t come across in print very easily.

TheReal8symbols

Oh, I'm just being a curmudgeon, we're cool.

stratusmonkey

Courtney Barnett... I'm convinced that Beebadoobe is really Juliana Hatfield!

BeLikeDogs

Don’t let me hold you back, never too many music suggestions! I don’t know La Tigre but heard about Bikini Kill on the No Dogs In Space podcast, I think.

TheReal8symbols

Meant to say "Le Tigre".

BeLikeDogs

I should have known based on my years of French, haha

AMGRN

Brigitte calls me baby is a cool new band that sounds like Elvis and Morrissey had a love child. And it’s amazing.

Pickles_McBeef

I'm so glad to see them mentioned. I just discovered them recently and they're fantastic.

Beyond_Re-Animator

Nation of Language says their influences are Roxy Music and Kate Bush. And I love them….

BeLikeDogs

Love love Kate Bush…

Significant_Sign

Tuareg blues guitar, Nigerian jazz funk, Sue Yunying singing her pop songs using the Li people's traditional singing techniques (she is of the Li ethnicity). Tonight I heard a couple snippets of Ute rock'n'roll that had been remixed into EDM versions. I'll be googling that stuff tomorrow.

BeLikeDogs

Awesome, thank you.

TheVenusProjectB42L8

Just don't be listening to radio and top 40. Satellite radio by genre is a better way to discover new music suited to you, or by exploring playlists on Spotify.

befarked247

Hilltop Hoods Australian band, their music is I guess, fun and different every song https://youtu.be/MD8flUkymrM?si=ysOS5M8AXQwl90V- https://youtu.be/uq8PyyMbrYQ?si=fL1ME4pE5YW3v8kK

NoMayoForReal

Sirius XM channel 37 Octane is my go to.

hippiestitcher

You said open to all genres... Hi, I'm a 55yo white woman who has become obsessed with Reggaeton. :D I'm well aware that most of the lyrics are filthy; I can't understand them so that doesn't bother me. The beat and the rhythms are infectious and make me ridiculously happy. My current most-used playlist on Spotify is This is Daddy Yankee. <3 Also obsessed with the Argentinian folk singer Mercedes Sosa. What a voice.

BeLikeDogs

Ridiculously happy is my favorite! Filthy is fine sometimes and sometimes not… couldn’t explain the difference for me, haha. Love folk too, thanks!

longleggedwader

AJR put on one of the best concerts I have been to, ever. Florence and the Machine, Lovejoy, Mumford and Sons, Bleachers, I could go on for days. There is amazing music out there right now.

xThePoacherx

The past 20 years is a wide swath of “new.” That is akin to grouping the Rolling Stones, Exile in Main Steet and Dr. Dre’s, The Chronic in the same era of music.

BeLikeDogs

And yet we are acquiring a fun list.

A few of my favorites from recent years: [Khruangbin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcaWN3ZJnhs) [Vampire Weekend](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kW9Qk00693c) (although they've been around longer than 10 years their sound is evolving [The Beaches](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q0JsNdVyYM) [Wolf Alice](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NV39h7GHDYs)

GenXylophone

also came to say Wolf Alice

megaboz

I stopped paying attention to popular music in the late 90's... I think Youtube's algorithm is very helpful. Listen to stuff you like, try some suggestions here, and see what pops up for recommendations. Off the top of my head, I found Khruangbin, Leon Bridges, Tame Impala, Roosevelt, The Black Keys, Scary Pockets and Cannons this way. I have no idea how "popular" these groups are in the wider world, although I did hear a Khruangbin song in Target once. Conan O'Brien interviewed [Michelle Zauner](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelle_Zauner) on his podcast which led me to check out Japanese Breakfast. Rick Beato--highly recommend his channel, he does great interviews with musicians and analysis of pop hits in his What Makes This Song Great? series--has led to a few discoveries/rediscoveries including alt-rock supergroup 3rd Secret. Postmodern Jukebox did a lot of great covers of hit pop songs starting around 11 years ago, most of which I'd never heard so the originals sound "off". "Thrift Shop" just sounds wrong to me if it's not ragtime. And "Royals" should be sung by a 7 ft tall sad clown. There's also so much music from the past I've discovered I just completely missed. Or bands that make great music but never made it "big". A friend of mine from high school lived in Seattle and was plugged into the local Americana music scene there. She turned me on to Radio Nationals and The Maldives. She's also a big fan of The Band (going all the way back to the 70's!) and I'd never heard anything from them. Loved The Last Waltz the first time I listened to it. A few groups I still follow everything they do... If you like synth-pop Information Society got back together and has put out three great original albums and one cover album since 2007. They've only gotten better over time. We saw Chris Isaak live in 1999, found out I liked everything he put out. Consistently good rock/country/rockabilly. He's also put out three original albums and a cover album since 2002. Some groupsI lose track of... I found out only a few months ago that RHCP still made some good music after the 90s. Californication was the last hit I remember from them. D'oh! Suntrip Records is a great label to follow for Goa Trance. The album Corolle from Khetzal is a definite standout in their catalog. Carbon Based Lifeforms and Dreamstate Logic for ambient space music.

elizajaneredux

The Black Angels, especially Phosphene Dream. That first track…. So, so good.

Typical-Horror-5247

I was obsessed with the Black Angels got to see them a bunch of times in small venues so fucking good. I stopped listening when they made that album, it felt like they ditched their dirty psychedelic feel. Maybe I’ll have to go revisit. I recently found GOAT they’re fun!

elizajaneredux

Yeah the rest of that album is a little too 60s campy for me but Bad Vibrations is one of my favorite songs.

4sliced

The Midnight is my favorite find of the last decade or so. Total 80s vibe yet utterly modern.

Multiple__Sarcasms

Someone already mentioned Nation of Language - they remind me a little of Depeche Mode but have some new takes on synth pop. But I love discovering (or having my kids tell me about) artists that seem genre-less. Check out Yves Tumor - definitely listenable and not the same as everything else out there now.

KipMcSkipster

Some of these were probably already mentioned: Field Music Silverbacks The Weather Station Wet Leg Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever Laura Barrett Youth in a Roman Field Salad Boys Dutch Uncles The Vaccines Pip Blom

CandleMakerNY2020

Also just to relate even further to OPs post, I too felt like this at times especially in 2022. Then I finally found GHOST and its been extremely cathartic for me to get into a new band (new to me) so heavily. If it wasnt for Ghost completely sweeping me off my feet Im not sure Id of had such a burst of emotion and a push to stay positive and keep myself focused on music and life in general. We all need that boost sometimes. 🤘🏻

BeLikeDogs

It only takes one new discovery to relight the fire, right? You totally get it and I will listen to Ghost! It’s going to take me a while to give attention to all these suggestions and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve started painting again and music is essential to the process!

CandleMakerNY2020

YESSSSSSSSSSSS 🙌🏼 You have the spirit buddy! Thats whats up! I was actually SHOCKED at how quickly I hot deep into Ghost. Started with IMPERA then worked my way back through their catalog. The videos on YT are amazing and I love the “lore” too! Enjoy!

If you like rock and hard rock check out a Japanese band named Band Maid. Yes, 90% of the lyrics are in Japanese, and they have a gimmick with maid costumes, but they are five immensely talented ladies who can play the shit out of their instruments. If you like Jazz or funk, check out Snarky Puppy or Bad Bad Not Good. I'm a bass nut so I like a group called The Omnific. Also Soften The Glare. I am also into psyche stoner metal so I'm really into Spaceslug, Camel Driver, Fall Of An Empire.

BeLikeDogs

Just returned from Japan, will definitely check them out! Japanese rockabilly is fun too. Learned about the Tokyo Skunx.

grahsam

They are a tremendous band. As you work through their catalog, they started off a little J-Pop and weren't really my style. They slowly evolved into more hard rock and metal. Now they boarder on progressive rock. I think all of their stuff is on Spotify. If one album doesn't do it for you, keep looking. They feel like they are the most "American" of all the J-Rock bands I've heard. They've played in the US a few times, included Lollapalooza last year in Chicago.

BeLikeDogs

Good to know, thank you! Will admit my trip to the J-Pop floor in the Shibuya Tower Records left me jangled (a few tracks playing loudly over the speakers at the same time, a crime against music I was already not so sure about). I remain open to all though, especially if they’ve grown!

grahsam

To add on to my response, I love this song and think the video is great at capturing the band. I hope other people will give it a listen\\watch as well. [https://youtu.be/-FWuMx\_pkH4?si=ZoH4u1IZrphpqf0t](https://youtu.be/-FWuMx_pkH4?si=ZoH4u1IZrphpqf0t)

They totally are. But without being goofy. It's upbeat rock with minimal gimmicks and maximum talent.

Death Grips gave me that "omg wtf is this" when I first heard "The Fever" Clown Core Knower (but I repeat myself ;) ) A genre called [scenecore ](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7BDHGoqpPFu6tBfHnztPUn?si=0c3ecb03e5964450)-- probably the closest to what I would have expected the current generation to have come up with after what ours and those before ours did I still listen to a lot of DNB which is still being made Pendulum of course Ghost is actually pretty good, but that may have to do with their direct blatant inspiration from 60s-70s psychedelic rock and 70s-80s arena rock. I bet my dad would even like Ghost. Rabbit Junk A genre called [neurofunk](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4Pbi9IXKK2lD9VnHO2wGxO?si=36e9ec78eafe46ac) I'm finding a lot of new industrial/rock/goth/metal stuff, like Rave The Reqviem or Ashbury Heights Of course there's things like synthwave and [future funk](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1DXbjGYBfEmjR5?si=d9b243116dfd469b), which integrates all that vaporwave nostalgia into modern music sympathies. Oh, and honorary mention for [Nelward](https://open.spotify.com/artist/4DVe11vtKHN5TRtG8TEjNb?si=QVzONIEDQN27Z1InnXxjWQ), who can be best described as "the most out-there mainstream pop ever" Oh, and people are really sleeping on [The Black Kids](https://open.spotify.com/artist/1oJolWh3meHLWUcyIijst7?si=rRLkG85gTBa7bviHgjTfFg). I'm really enjoying their stuff.

Jake Bugg. Start with his eponymous first album which was released when he was just 18 years old. Lucius. Their song “How Your Heart Gets” is transcendent. Broken Bells Adrianne Lenker (See also her side project Big Thief) Kae Tempest. I am reallllllllly not into hip hop, but Kae Tempest’s “Let Them Eat Chaos” is brilliant. A.A Bondy Autolux Jake Wesley Rogers Jenny Lewis’ solo work is great. Mitski I love Brandi Carlile. You know Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs…yes?
