Y’all are chumps i gained fragmented sentience when i was both sperm and egg and when they became one my sentience fused into one fully conscious being
Really? I thought it was 3 years old. Me and everyone who I know had their first memories at ages 3-4. I’d already accepted that COVID babies are sentient now.
I have visual memories of events that are confirmed to have happened but there is no photographic proof of, starting at age 2. But my memories before age 4 I can count on my fingers
Yeah I’m the same. Very fragmented memories while I was 2 and only a few. Mostly watching tv show episodes, one memory of being in the shower, and a traumatic one of falling teeth first into my breakfast table.
I guess it’s kind of like how animals have innate instincts and a sort of inner monologue without knowing a spoken language.
I remember in one memory I was just sort of getting used to walking. I was walking on the grass outside bouncing my favourite blue ball.
The first memory I had, I couldn't even sit on my ass, I was that young, later on I saw my first nightmare too, probably around 1.5-2 year old new gens are getting slower. My dear nephew who born in 2018 shows zero sign of intelect. I'm not even sure if he is sentient.
I think 2.5 is usually what experts say you can start having long term memories so 2ish makes sense for “sentience.” I have a 2 year old and he’s having conversations with me. It’s through the lense of a toddler but still.
Thank you!! I was about to post something similar, I have a friend that has 2 sons around the ages of 5 & 6 and her kids will NOT get off the iPads, ALL DAY LONG they're on them, they skip meals, don't listen etc..! If she tried to take it away they would scream and scream! They're also already obsessed with sports, like WTF!!! These kids are already ruined and she's just too tired and works too hard to do anything about it! Sorry but this new generation won't be any better it will only be X2 worse and as each generation is born will continue to become worse as this tech world advances! Soon nobody will no what it's like to be human!
Sounds like your friend made an incredibly stupid mistake by giving them an iPad in the first place. She sounds like a very misinformed and unprepared parent, which isn’t excusable.
You must realize this is true of every generation. Boomers were very hard working and respectful to older people. They tend to their lawns due to respect for their neighbors and themselves. Their parents are all artists or crafts people of several hobbies they are very good at. They’re unfortunately more often racist and or homophonic than later generations.
Gen x does not have the same work ethic or show the same amount of respect for elders as the boomer generation. They would still wake up to rake the leaves at their parents’ house without being asked, though. They know how to fix a lawn mower.
Millennials continue this trend of working less hard, and are more sensitive and less independent than gen x. They’re less respectful to elders than gen x. They didn’t have the internet until college or elementary, depending how old they were. And even then, there was almost nothing to see for the first 5 years aside from corporate websites and a few funny pictures.
Gen z grew up glued to phones or the internet, in a time with less hardship, more trophies, and more hubris and self obsession than ever before. I see them taking phone calls on speaker and public or listening to music aloud in public. The internet helped raise gen z and changed the world around them. The internet changed culture and the world beyond what anybody can imagine. Gen z (and increasingly, all of us) are so used to ease and expedience that many of them literally don’t even use punctuation. They generally don’t greet you when you walk in the door at a business, or even know how to say, “One moment, please.” They are on their phones and take personal calls during work hours.
If you know how to discipline & parents, then you can introduce the tablet without it being too much.
My son only sees his when we are out. He never sees it at home. Limitations & setting boundaries helps a lot.
My kid is 2 and he’s not getting an iPad, we don’t even have one. When we go on longer car rides or out to eat we give him crayons, picture books, or just involve him in the experience rather than shoving him off to the side and putting a screen in his face. It’s okay for him to be bored and find things to do.
I think the older people in my generation really messed up with iPads and raising their children. I was born in 1992 and really see some of the mistakes my generation made made in that regard.
Agreed. I think OP is mixing up sentience with having permanent retrievable memories which exist around age 4/5. The brain goes through so much development and rewiring during that period that having no permanently retrievable memories seems to be the consequence. However, this appears to be a gradual process. The 3 year old remembers events preceding its current time (I.e, it remembers seeing a black cat the day before) but gradually these memories fade as the brain rewires itself.
Yet my sibling (preschool age) remembers stuff like what I promised them 5 months ago and never actually did. Yes, we'll play Mario *soon*, but I still don't trust you with my controllers yet.
My son was born in October of 2020 (so he won't be in kindergarten until 2026). There's no way OP has kids if they believe they don't become sentient before age five. Has OP even met a young child?
My niece born in 2021 is smart af and extremely expressive and talks very clearly. I wouldn’t be surprised if she already has made several long term memories. 2003-2004 is the time of my first memories
I think you are misusing the word sentient. Even infants are sentient. It just means having perception, or experiencing something. Remembering things is not required.
It depends on the cut off for your state and when in 2020 they were both. Also, OP is saying next year, not next school year. In Florida if you're a 2020 baby born in Early August or earlier, you start kindergarten in Fall of next year.
My son is an October 2020 baby so thankfully we have another year.
I was 2 on 9/11 and I have very faint memories of the daycare teachers freaking out while watching the TV. I obviously did not understand what was actually going on but after learning about 9/11 later in life I pinpoint that day. I guess sentience varies from person to person.
Based on my experience with my 4 year old and his friends, they're going to be just fine. GenZ taught everyone a lot of important lessons (and continues to do so) and we're going to be sure not to fuck up our kids.
Idk im more talking about how it was impossible to properly socialize in a lot of places, and that toddler age is really important to socialize. Not doing so can stunt growth. Im not worried what their morals are, im actually concerned for their physical brain development
That's what I'm talking about too. Most good parents understand the importance of socializing and make an effort to make sure their kids are out there with other kids. Daycare/pre-k, playdates, etc. In our case, we're lucky enough to have a bunch of great neighbors with kids around the same age. The kids play together all the time. A lot has been learned about screen time too and setting strict limits. I don't think we'll ever fully understand what went wrong with GenZ but we all know parenting styles need a change.
You know, that makes a lot of sense. I moved to a new country when I was around 5 and was essentially alone (parents not included) for a solid year because I didn’t know the language. I remember being lonely at first but eventually just…got used to not having friends my own age. These days, even after making plenty of friends, I’m really good at being alone for extended periods of time.
I feel like this will be similar to how 9/11 affected GenZ. Most of GenZ has no memory of 9/11 but was born into a world completely changed by it.
Honestly I think people didn't learn enough from COVID so we'll see 😂
Happens to all of us!
Some of us remember the Vietnam War, Korean War.
Then you have the release of Star Wars, and other certain films.
VHS, CDs, modems. Phones that were only for calling, or wired into a wall!
Sept. 11, and COVID-19 for sure!
NES, Genesis. n64, Playstation 1. Perhaps PS3, Steam.
although gen alpha starts in 2010 it truly begins in 2020 my gen alpha cousins who are 8-12 years old wont relate with these kids I can tell you that much
Those generational events are the true generational differentiators, not arbitrary year ranges.
For millennials it was 9/11. 1996 is still a millennial and they don't remember 9/11. Rubbish. They're with you Zoomers.
Similarly my 11 year old was in elementary school when COVID lockdowns hit. We were in Minneapolis area and he very much remembers the otherwise dead silence at night that made the sounds of protesters and police carry for miles. He remembers me joking and playing the purge sirens while driving home during the riot curfews.
His siblings remember nothing. They're not the same generation in spirit.
They done been sentient for a minute already, friend: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sentient
“capable of sensing or feeling : conscious of or responsive to the sensations of seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting, or smelling”
I can't believe this. The fact that I'm just about old enough to purchase alcohol terrifies me. This December I can buy alcohol
I live with my family because apartments in my area are too expensive and I often forget that I'm an adult because I frequently do chores and babysit. I still pay rent and buy groceries and pay my own bills and stuff though...
Like I remember things from the 2015-2019s and then realize it's 2024 and feel old...
My earliest memory was when I was like right before I turned 2. It’s super fucking stupid too. It was when my mom received my new car seat from my grandmother in her living room. When I described the room, car seat, and the gist of the interaction my mom was like how tf do you remember that. I have a handful of vague memories before 4, but I must’ve been really excited about getting that seat because that’s the earliest by a considerable margin when you consider how young I was.
Fun Fact. 2025 will be the first Gen Beta kids. Don't worry if you're annoyed by Gen Alpha. There's another generation coming to do a better job of it.
It was a terrible year when I had to give birth alone because my husband was on a business trip in Asia and they had a strict lockdown policy there so he couldn't come home when I gave birth.
I liked the pandemic, antivaxxers died, I got to chill at home, I kinda got over my fear of needles, though of course there were problems, but most of it was good for me
Shit they’re sentient now. Sentient enough to spray me head to toe with the garden hose yesterday on my way to a meeting and laugh their ass off about how mad I was.
Babies are definitely sentient.
Edit: 'sentience' is defined scientifically as the ability to feel positive and negative emotions. It's a low bar. Even dogs are sentient. Sea sponges are not sentient, and insects are probably not either. Op simply does not understand the meaning of this word. The ability to form long-term memories is not a requirement for sentience.
Don't know why you're getting down voted.
I've got two kids under 4, and if someone were to try to tell me my kids aren't sentient I would seriously consider what that person was all about and wouldn't let them near my kids.
I've heard this whole kids aren't sentient thing before, and in a couple of different and rather disturbing contexts. I think it actually may be very connected to a really warped anti-human philosophy. I hear it from the kind of people that think post birth abortion is a good idea. Or the kind of people that get pregnant so they can have an abortion as part of a wiccan ceremony. Really ugly thought.
Not that I think most people who would "colloquially" consider very young kids not sentient are like that, but I think that's where it comes from and it's leeched into the rest of society from there.
Yes. Anyone who interacts with babies and todlers can see that they are aware and experiencing sense of self and emotions. Obviously not as complex as an adult, but they are sentient people.

Same
I also choose that guy's lady
Me too
That’s the same year me and your lady got together
That’s the same year me and his lady had a kid together
that kid is about to become sentient
Your relationship is gonna be sentient soon how do you feel about that
That was the year where your lady and I got together
damn that’s the year I uhhhh… Sat in my room and played guitar 10 hours a day
What's the uhhh?
I was trying to convey that I am embarrassed to admit that I sat around and did jackshit but play guitar
Oh, I thought you meant something else and was about to say keep it to yourself dude.
Damn that’s the year me and my ex broke up :/
mr steal yo girl
![gif](giphy|d7rvF20PqNuGKSQGhf)
“Your lady” You were 16
and she was 37 /j if that wasn’t clear
Lmao facts that’s such a boomer way to talk.
Jesus I feel old
Before or during quarantine?
i believe it would be during
How'd you get together?
Dang, I was one year under. Met my husband in 2019 in highschool
You mean before?
Under 😄 I talk in my own way lol
Lol
[удалено]
Same. Son was born a year later
Is your lady named COVID?
It's the year my youngest kid was born.
I was sentient before I was 4
Seriously. I gained sentience PRENATALLY. What is the wrong with the current generation!?
Y’all are chumps i gained fragmented sentience when i was both sperm and egg and when they became one my sentience fused into one fully conscious being
Nah cmon man I can fully remember the experiences of both the sperm and egg before they joined to make me, get on my level fr
Bro I have vivid memories of sperm academy
I remember hanging out in the ovary with all the homies good times frfr
Nah bro I remember being in my Dad's balls, the nostalgia killing me 😔😔😔
I also choose that guys sperm and egg
You guys are so lucky. I was born at a very young age. The first two years of my life, I couldn’t even walk 😔
Terrence Howard?
Interesting. It can happen before, but for most people memory becomes continuous at the age 5.
Really? I thought it was 3 years old. Me and everyone who I know had their first memories at ages 3-4. I’d already accepted that COVID babies are sentient now.
Everything I've read has said three is when long term memory happens for most people.
How is that a thing people believe? You forgot things. You were sentient before you were born and you forgot things.
I have (very distorted) memories from when I was 1.
I swear to god I remember getting a boner in my crib and being confused
i do too. i stg i’ve been a grown up since birth and am aging backwards
How must it feel to think without a language?
I guess it’s kind of like how animals have innate instincts and a sort of inner monologue without knowing a spoken language. I remember in one memory I was just sort of getting used to walking. I was walking on the grass outside bouncing my favourite blue ball.
I fell in the pool and nearly drowned when I was 3 and I still remember it. It's my earliest memory actually. Good job mum and dad.
I was reading and speaking well before 5, can remember stuff from at least age 3, so yeah, would also consider myself pretty sentient before age 5.
Me too. Literaly the first thing i was concious about was a dream when i was 3
The first memory I had, I couldn't even sit on my ass, I was that young, later on I saw my first nightmare too, probably around 1.5-2 year old new gens are getting slower. My dear nephew who born in 2018 shows zero sign of intelect. I'm not even sure if he is sentient.

Please God don't give them an iPad we already fucked up the first part of gen alpha, let's not do it again with the second half
Thank you!! I was about to post something similar, I have a friend that has 2 sons around the ages of 5 & 6 and her kids will NOT get off the iPads, ALL DAY LONG they're on them, they skip meals, don't listen etc..! Well hate to say it, but this is most parents these days!
She sounds so lazy and weak that she is neglectful.
Thank God I'm not the only one whose seen this problem
You must realize this is true of every generation. Boomers were very hard working and respectful to older people. They tend to their lawns due to respect for their neighbors and themselves. Funny of you to imply that they don’t already have iPads
We not giving our kids iPads 🤣they going OUTSIDE
If you know how to discipline & parents, then you can introduce the tablet without it being too much. My son only sees his when we are out. He never sees it at home. Limitations & setting boundaries helps a lot.
You shouldn't give any children an iPad before 10 years old and that's generous
My kid is 2 and he’s not getting an iPad, we don’t even have one. When we go on longer car rides or out to eat we give him crayons, picture books, or just involve him in the experience rather than shoving him off to the side and putting a screen in his face. My nephew's born in 2022 and already sentient enough to steal our phones and cry for grandma.
That's scary NGL 😳
bro was listening to Meghan Thee Stallion nursery rhymes (seriously though, wtf was the obsession with her about back then?)
Yeah you might wanna do something about that
WELL time for my cane!
Currently fostering a 2020, can confirm she's been sentient and intentionally making my life harder for at least 6 months
2020 kids are absolutely sentient at this age. I have one born in 2022
Agreed. I think OP is mixing up sentience with having permanent retrievable memories which exist around age 4/5. My 3.5 year old has a memory like a steel trap. He still brings things up from a year ago. Can't get anything past this kid
Yet my sibling (preschool age) remembers stuff like what I promised them 5 months ago and never actually did. Yes, we'll play Mario *soon*, but I still don't trust you with my controllers yet.

I think he means cognizant.
2020 babies will be starting Pre-K next school year, not kindergarten Source: I have a kid born in March 2020.
Nephew is starting kindergarten in September born February 20
Interesting, maybe it varies by school district or state
Meanwhile my niece is hitting 10
We just finished PK3!
It depends on the cut off for your state and when in 2020 they were both. Also, OP is saying next year, not next school year. I was 4 and I have no memory of 9/11 whatsoever
Legitimately frifhtened by what the 2016-2020 babies are gonna grow up like
Based on my experience with my 4 year old and his friends, they're going to be just fine. GenZ taught everyone a lot of important lessons (and continues to do so) and we're going to be sure not to fuck up our kids.

I dont know I work in a museum with lots of child traffic and every one of these kids is blasting youtube videos at full volume from their strollers
You know, that makes a lot of sense. I moved to a new country when I was around 5 and was essentially alone (parents not included) for a solid year because I didn’t know the language. Millennials has fucked it up already. I wouldn’t be so sure about Gen Z then.
Fr, my cousin knew how to navigate youtube at age 2
I have a kid who was born in 2019. They’ve been sentient.
idk where that myth came from, I have memories of when I was 3 as well as the thought processes going through my head at the time
I feel like this will be similar to how 9/11 affected GenZ. Most of GenZ has no memory of 9/11 but was born into a world completely changed by it. Honestly I think people didn't learn enough from COVID so we'll see 😂
Probably wouldn't be shocked if we see a lot of them making jokes and stuff.
They’re hatching….

I was a late one I didn't boot up till I was 7 on my birthday to be exact lol.
Ans their social skills and communication will be FUCKED. Those early life skills are hard to make up for later on

I became sentient at 2-3 , I was born in 2001 and I remember the early 2000s slightly
Until the age of 5, they’re just a clump of cells
They’ve been sentient for 4 years
They done been sentient for a minute already, friend: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sentient “capable of sensing or feeling : conscious of or responsive to the sensations of seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting, or smelling”
i was 10 lol
I was in my 20s lol
😭 bro you’re so baby
Omg why did you say it like that… I’m scared
They're taking over!
I feel old
These are the ones after Gen Alpha kids?
No. They are also gen Alpha.
Ah ok. I was wondering where the cut off was.
2025 is the first year of Generation Beta
Wow they’re finally going to have a conscious
so?
I can't believe this. The fact that I'm just about old enough to purchase alcohol terrifies me. damn. That was really deep
thank you for choosing a diverse picture
Born in 2007 and sentient since 2011 🙃
good for them
🙁
I remember before the womb so
They probably already are
Then why do I have memories from when I was 3?
The Cocomelon Generation 😂
bro i have memories from being like 3
Worse things than COVID are coming
Those are some big ass 4 year olds...
Co vid is gonna be their 911 jokes isn't it.
I’m scared of being scared of the fact that I will have to accept that this is going to happen sooner than later.

if I get into an argument with someone in 5 years and I find out they were born in 2020, just shoot me.
OP doesn’t have any experience with kids, clearly. Age 5… 5?! You raising a couple of Goldfish OP?
😱
Sentient is the wrong word. You're talking about *sapient.*
Coronalings
Perfect age to give them an iPad to use for,8 hours a day
Oh no
Mr house was born in 2020
It was a terrible year when I had to give birth alone because my husband was on a business trip in Asia and they had a strict lockdown policy there so he couldn't come home when I gave birth.
2020? So they’re 4 years old.
Yeah but barely sentient. Who cares?
I liked the pandemic, antivaxxers died, I got to chill at home, I kinda got over my fear of needles, though of course there were problems, but most of it was good for me

Wait people are still making these!?
I was sentient at 3
I’m only commenting to show my appreciation for the **INTENSIVE** racial representation in the photograph—this squad took some effort to assemble.
I bet some of them are sentient right now
My bffs niece was born in 2020 She talks shit to her mom all the time rn
Shit they’re sentient now. Sentient enough to spray me head to toe with the garden hose yesterday on my way to a meeting and laugh their ass off about how mad I was.
my sister was born in 2020 now im scared
I'm pretty sure most people gain consciousness at 3 years old not 5 so they already did, I got my first memories at 3 years old
Were you not sentient at around 1 years old?
I remember getting a black eye at two, but I don’t really have strong memories that I can recall before I was 8 😭😭
oh mother of god please dont give them ipads or else they ended up become stupid like MCA 2023 kids
Oh no
Is that why Dr Disrespect took a hiatus?

Let’s accelerate to the end even quicker and give them the right to vote.
damn 2017 kids are 7 now?
nope
my baby cousin was born in 2019 and there is no way he's sentient

Alright, you got me semantic Nazi. By completely ignoring colloquial definitions and vulgar use, you've earned yourself a trophy! 🏆
Sentience is not generally used colloquially to refer to long-term memory formation.
Time to embrace Texas tradition (pumps shotgun) They’re all a bunch of little shits anyway
