Okay these are terrible cars for a teenager and especially terrible cars for a first car for a teenager. There, I said it. I am not old enough to have a teenager but if I was buying something for one and it had to be sporty it would either be a used stick shift because even the slowest of cars are fun with a stick since they "feel fast," an Elantra N, Civic SI, GTI, etc. Why am I being a negative nancy when I was the same way and asking the same things? Because repairing those cars is kind of expensive, insurance is astronomically expensive, you need to learn how to be a good/responsible driver first, and these cars have such little feedback so you don't really feel any respect for the ease and quickness with which you gain lots of speed. The safety features are generally pretty good on new cars but none of that matters if you are going 90 into a tree, you hydroplane, etc. Strongly recommend getting a car you can learn with that won't be a disaster if you get in a fender bender with, and that also doesn't go ridiculously fast so you can learn to respect horsepower. I think I would have loved a lightly used GTI or Elantra N as a teen and they seem much more reasonable than these cars which are virtually double the price. If you HAVE to get one of these, just get a used G70 because they're much cheaper...

Jimi_The_Cynic

Yeah I gotta 2nd this. I learned manual in a powerful, old car. And the difference was, the slightest bit of extra throttle, a little slip on the clutch, it let you know you fucked up. Loudly and violently at times. These things are deceptive. They feel comfortable no matter how hard you're abusing them. There really is very little warning when they're gonna lose traction compared to an old car with less noise dampening and mechanical steering.  I'd say get a used stinger 2.0 with the manual if you must have a car like this.  Honestly, your parents are fucking idiots. A civic si is really the max performance I'd recommend for a child, and even then, I still got in plenty of trouble in mine at 17

SpecialSun3547

Thanks for your opinion, I will say all insurance will be under my fathers name until I’m 18 so it won’t be an expense for me for quite some time.

Secksualinnuendo

It will still raise his rates significantly

SpecialSun3547

I’m already under it to drive his veichles and I did some progressive quotes it’s actually quite similar. To be fair their is already sports veichles under his name which I’m under as well so that could be why.

burning_blubber

The insurance cost is the smallest part of all of this because it sounds like your family can easily afford it. Hey if you really wanted a BMW/luxury car to learn, a CPO 330i would be somewhat more reasonable but it is still probably a little too quick and expensive to repair for a learner.

SpecialSun3547

Thanks for your advice, I appreciate it. Cost isn’t to much of a concern for me. So I’ll definetly look into to those!

burning_blubber

Yeah, once again though, this isn't purely a cost thing. It's moreso a safety thing. If you ever get into motorcycles one day, no one is going to recommend you buy a 1000cc bike to learn on. They're going to say start smaller. It's not the cost, it's learning fundamentals safely then you can always dump your learner when the time is right. Also I really do think there is value in learning stick. It just opens up options and is fun. My parents wouldn't let me get one when I was a teen so I had to learn on a high school friend's car.

SpecialSun3547

Thanks for the input I appreciate it, I definetly appreciate the advice!

tenshal

Honestly if pricing isn’t a big factor go with the m440i. The b58 is an incredible engine. BMW always undersells their 0-60 times, so it may be a bit faster than 0.6s gap. (You don’t need that much power though). The ZF transmission is also better, you can see all the people here complaining about the rough downshifts of g70.

SpecialSun3547

Thank you very much

PastAd8754

If you’re a teenager you should not be getting either of these cars. Put 25K into an S&P 500 ETF and buy a beater with the remaining 15K.

bariksis

What happened to just focusing on the OP inquiry? He didn’t ask for your 2 cents on a fucking index fund 🤦🏾‍♂️

PastAd8754

Because it’s a stupid decision and I’m gonna call it out lmao. No 16 year old needs a legitimate sports sedan. What a terrible stupid decision. Edit **unless they come from money** Then it really doesn’t matter. I’d get a 2024 G70 over a 2022 M440i.

bariksis

Agreed. I made another comment where I suggest he likely comes from money. The OP should have started with that or just left out his age altogether, cause personally I think adding his age to his post is what’s getting him all this heat. G70 3.3 SP all the way tho.

PastAd8754

Yes if he left out his age, I would’ve kept it simple: G70 3.3 SP is definitely the better option.

SpecialSun3547

Thanks for you guys opinion,I appreciate the advice

ModernGram

Get a Toyota Corolla and call it a day.

Fit-Profession3986

I don't reccomend any teenager own either of these cars. Way too much power and way too much ego that come along with them. Two things that do not bode well with a young brain that is not fully developed when it comes to making good decisions...  But that being said. If I was young again, I would much rather have the roudy more rough around the edges BMW. My dad had an M car when I was your age and let's just, say it's a miracle I'm alive.. I did alot of stupid stuff in that car. Again, no teenager needs a car with that much power.  Maybe look into a 2023 Audi TTS. Still sporty and good looks, but not dangerously powerful.

SpecialSun3547

Thanks for your opinion, what made you choose your genesis over a bmw?

Fit-Profession3986

Really unique exterior design and an absolute killer interior. Overall just a more unique car and better design touches. Also gives you alot more bang for your buck in terms of tech, features, etc. Not to mention the tech in this car is absolutely fantastic. It has features no other car on the market offers. The self driving HDA (autopilot if you will) works phenomenal and is amazing on long drives. Overall the car gives you 10x better value for your money, performance is crazy, and it's the most unique car on the road and by far has the best looking interior of any car in its class and I'd even argue above it's class.

SpecialSun3547

I agree 100% with you on most of what you said! The only thing I see the bmw better at is raw speed and exhaust, but it just is falling behind everywhere else… do you know if bolt on mods would remove the warranty for the g70? Or is there any way to get more power out of it while retaining my warranty? Thank you.

fr33lancr

Looks wise, G70. If you have a Genesis dealer near you and being COPO gives you the full 10/100, I'd lean into the Genesis. All things being equal, it comes down to what you prefer. At your age, I'd think you'd be looking at an M2 or for the AWD M240i with xDrive. Why are you set on just BMW or Genesis? For the 40k you're getting as a gift, there are so many other options available.

SpecialSun3547

Thanks for the reply! And that’s a good question, at first I considered the following, Audi S5 sportback,Golf R(my uncle has one their sweet),Mercedes c43 AMG. I don’t have a genesis dealer near me, their building one but right now it’s just Hyundai/genesis

fr33lancr

Have you driven an Elantra N? One of my favorite cars. Even though a front drive, with some 18" full winter tires, it has zero issues in deep snow.

SpecialSun3547

I did consider that for awhile, it’s a nice car! Just not what I’m currently interested in. Thanks!

Emergency_Bother9837

M440i no contest. However, at your age you need to invest this money for long term gains buying a car is a poor decision..

bariksis

Anyone crying in the comments about his age and choices clearly can’t see that the kid OBVIOUSLY comes from money. His father probably has vehicles in the $100k+ category so this “small” purchase of $40-50k is probably like buying a PS5 to them. OP the comparison between G70 3.3T SP and a M440i aren’t really common. Most people are deciding between a G70 and a M340i. If you want comfort, luxury with decent performance and maintenance that won’t break the bank, go with the G70. If you want high performance but maintenance headaches down the road then go for the M440i. Either choice is a great car. Good luck!

SpecialSun3547

Thanks a lot! I was comparing it to the m340i but I just don’t like it nearly as much as the m440i.

anthonyy484848

Brotha if money is not the issue, 440 all day 🤣 HAS to have a b58 tho

SpecialSun3547

If you don’t mind me asking, why did you pick your genesis over the other options?

anthonyy484848

Over a 340i? Money and insurance was crazy. I feel this car is one of if not the best power and luxury for its price point.

SpecialSun3547

It is by the best bang for your buck, thanks for your input

burning_blubber

It's not an issue of price, it's an issue of this is a first car for a new driver. I've seen too many news reports in places I've lived of teens in this exact situation killing someone by accident because they're racing their new audi S4 or whatever without really knowing how to drive to in good conscience say a sports sedan for a new driver isn't stupid. I used the motorcycle analogy in my original reply- no one in their right mind learns to ride on a 1000cc bike and that is not a cost issue. Here is a sobering reminder that made national news https://nypost.com/2024/03/27/us-news/teen-driver-charged-in-deaths-of-mom-3-kids-admitted-speeding-in-earlier-crash/

LegitimateAd4263

Congrats 🎉 I am no longer the youngest one here! I’m 17

SpecialSun3547

Haha, did you have to make this same decision?

LegitimateAd4263

Indeed I did my freshman year tho. I have a 21 bought new 3.3 SP. Looked at a stinger, m340i and older E63? I think not sure on that one and an Audi s5 but I hate the Audi.

LegitimateAd4263

Except I paid cash for mine, but my parents are buying me a graduation gift next year hopefully a 24 GT premium

SpecialSun3547

Awesome! Yeah this will be my first actual veichle, my currently veichle is just a 2023 Tahoe high country that’s just one of my dads fleet veichles. Those Gt’s are sweet tho!

SpecialSun3547

Also what made you choose the genesis over he bmw? The m340i is a bit different than the m440i but I’m still curious to hear your opinion.

LegitimateAd4263

What does your dad do? And I just love how unique the g70 is.

SpecialSun3547

He does quite a bit I know he makes most of his money of flipping houses with my mother she owns a real estate company. He also is the branch manager for a Michigan insurance/mortgage company, and he does owns a used car dealership as well.

LegitimateAd4263

Nice nice my mom is stay at home and my dad runs Iowa select farms

SpecialSun3547

Awesome! Well thanks for your input I appreciate it!

saucebozz1

Lol if i had either at 17 i would most likely not be here still

SpecialSun3547

Good thing you didn’t get them then haha

Themuffinan

Got my G70 at 20 but I knew plenty of kids who had v8 cars such as GT’s and SS’s so your safe in either of these cars as long as your not a dumbass. This being said I would lean to 440 as the better drivers and overall car. G70 is closer to these cars then you would think in speed as all the test you see online use launch control which our car doesn’t really have, and when in a real situation do you use launch control. Beat my friends S5, off the line might I add which if you look online they will tell you would never happen. 440 is gonna be quicker but marginally I would think, do with this information what you will.

SpecialSun3547

Thanks for your advice I appreciate it! You beat your friends s5 that’s impressive, have you had any regrets with your g70 or any concerns that I should be aware of? Thanks!

Themuffinan

I have the base 3.3T so all of my complains are more related to that then anything you’d encounter with it being fully loaded. General things to think about would be 2 door vs 4 door and which you want, and I’d look at cars like a Ct4-v blackwing considering you can get one for around 50k I believe.

SpecialSun3547

I definetly need 4 door for my freinds, I’d love to have a ct4-V black wing however I don’t want huge monthly payments but if you could find me one around that price tag I’d be more than glad to buy it haha…

Themuffinan

Thought you might be interested in this CarGurus listing: 2023 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing RWD - $54,900 (OK_PRICE) Mileage: 23,089 https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/link/382794290 55k which is a little over budget but i’ve seen them as low as 52k

SpecialSun3547

My budgets actually 70k so this isn’t bad at all, thanks!

Themuffinan

70k!? Dude as a G70 owner I would not be looking at this car at all with that budget unless I was buying new and I think most people here would agree with me. Give me that budget and i’m getting a used m3, RS3 or ct5 blackwing off the top of my head.

SpecialSun3547

I hate the rs3 and m3 so those aren’t on my list. I do like the black wing tho ill definetly look in to that

SpecialSun3547

Also I’d like to keep it relativitley low so I can buy a second beater car like a Jetta Gli or golf gti something cheap

Themuffinan

Is your insurance gonna be covered additionally to the cost? Insurance for any of those cars will likely be $500.

SpecialSun3547

The insurance will be under my fathers name, he’s 52. So it will not be an expense for me.

anthonyy484848

Don’t listen to anyone, I bought my g70 at 19 lol. Life’s too short to drive boring cars, just make sure you have a really good income and you can easily keep stacking bread

SpecialSun3547

Thanks, I appreciate It!

spacespartan18

These comments are great, I’m glad you have the availability to get a great car but young buck there’s much to learn. Shiny new car and young kid someone is gonna see you and try and take advantage of situation. Your friends will push you to dumb ass things in it. And driving in Michigan cmon now you’d be going 110 down the highway😭😭😭. Not saying you don’t deserve something nice but there’s nice and SAFER options for someone your age. I’m 24 and got myself a G70 2.0 6speed 4/5 months ago. 😂 and I don’t think I’m responsible enough to be driving the car most of the time. Not saying you won’t appreciate it and take care of it I’m sure your father would have it routinely maintained with oil changes and what not but waiting won’t hurt you. Promise my guy I know it’s exciting but reality is always around the corner.

SpecialSun3547

Thanks for the advice! I appreciate it, I’ll definetly consider your words.

dannyc927

Im 19 and got a g70 3.3t i must say it is fantastic, its more than fast enough for someone close to our age and as long as you dont drive like an idiot and treat the car with respect you will not regret this decision. I say the sports sedan is better than the coupe, and in a few years you might regret having the m440i rather than an m4 while the 3.3t sp has all the bells and whistles

SpecialSun3547

Thanks for your input! Why do you think I’d regret an m440i over an m4? I could afford an m4 however I like thepracticality of an gran coupe. Thanks.

PGTGenetics

Personally I go for the BMW , I’ve been hearing horror stories about getting in for maintenance, and never having loaners at Genesis , great amazing cars but the follow up service sucks , and if the after service is horrible it puts a bad taste in my mouth , even when I went to test drive the 3.3 I ask about that rumor and the sales guy just said “ well we’re only aloud so many loaners and you can always have someone pick you up” Not a good thing to say to a potential customer. Now I’ve had many bmw’s and getting in and having a loaner ready for me has always been top notch no matter what state I’m in. But the repairs and maintenance isn’t cheap , so please keep that in mind .. I’ve had all kinds of sporty cars in my life , GTI , Focus svt , 69 nova , Porsche 718 S … and the list goes on , but in all honesty , look into and test a mini S or Jcw and tell me that ain’t a Ton of fun and a rocket , I’ll always have a mini at our home , they are a drivers car…

SpecialSun3547

Thanks. I’ve heard good things about genesis concierge, I heard the service is only bad if you don’t have a dedicated dealer. I’m definetly sorry to hear that the sales guy wasn’t on top of his game, thanks for your input! And yeah minincoopers are sweet

PGTGenetics

Yeah the test drive was amazing on the 3.3 and it’s comfortable as all get out the m340 was damn nice too, not tried the 440 , but I’m sure it’s similar, for me though the Feel of the road in the mini JCW ( tuned to 350hp) was more amazing than my Porsche with 350hp , but we’re all different..

SpecialSun3547

Awesome! Thanks for your advice

Opening_Cow_8145

I’ve never driven a m440i but I’m gonna think the Genesis ride quality might be better for longevity due to the bmw sportiness. The back seats in the g70 are pretty small so I don’t think your sacrificing much getting a coupe with the BMW The Genesis has some great tech features that I personally love for the price especially. The exhaust doesn’t have anything on the bmw as well

SpecialSun3547

Thanks a lot! Would you have any exhaust mods in mind that could make the g70 better?

Fit-Profession3986

Borla is releasing one within the next year. That's gonna be your only good exhaust option for the G70. But for the BMW, there is a company called Dinan that make exhaust systems exclusively for BMW and they are hands down the best sounding exhaust systems on planet earth. If exhaust note is extremely important to you, you will 100% want to buy a BMW.

SpecialSun3547

Thank you for the reply! Exhaust isn’t to important but It is something to consider. Thanks!

prinsuvzamunda7

Well if AWD is important and the Genesis doesn't have that, wouldn't the default be the BMW? Also how long are you going to keep your car? Are there stand alone Genesis dealerships where you are?

SpecialSun3547

The genesis does have AWD, their building a stand alone dealership but currently it’s only Hyundai. I plan on keeping he car for at least 5 years

prinsuvzamunda7

Genesis then. You're paying $8k more for incremental upgrade in speed, handling, etc. Maintenance will be cheaper on Genesis and it has a longer warranty

Elwin67

Add 2021 C43 AMG to your list , I just went from g70 to AMG…. Don’t regret it one bit! I get at least one compliment per day lol https://preview.redd.it/3nm14ya0hj8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5ea0f45d367d89d43e2d0b689fac4f7b6c5ac113

anthonyy484848

What u still doing here benz boy 🤣

SpecialSun3547

Beutiful car! Definetly something I thought about, however I’m just worried about the maintenance? How has that been?
