You need to continuously consume carbs through the day in order to avoid spikes. When I skip meals, I will spike on anything because it’s all out out of balance. See if your doctor can refer you to a MFM dietician with experience with gestational diabetes. It’s different than other types of diabetes and a dietician can help a lot with getting things on track.

Also, another idea is that you could have spiked outside of your testing with the scroll. Unless you’re wearing a CGM you are getting a 1 second snapshot

You probably spiked on dinner bc you didn’t have any carbs and your liver tried to compensate.

The other day I had a horrible day so I couldn’t eat lunch. Just stuck to low carb snacks all day. Then I finally ate a real meal for dinner and had my usual amount of carbs- my dinner number was higher than it’s ever been. I didn’t spike but it was just a lot higher than normal. A meal i’ve eaten 100 times. So i know it’s because I didn’t eat enough during the day.

My nutritionist told me that your liver starts to produce glucose if you go too long without eating carbs. Your liver is also really bad at it so it generally leads to spikes. To avoid this, I was told to not go more than 3 hours without eating carbs during the day and no more than 10 hours overnight. It sounds like your dinner had almost no carbs, so that might have been the cause of your spike.

My nutritionist told me that consuming green leafy vegetables before/during a meal reduces a spike by 30%. You had a salad with that cinnamon roll and none with the hot dog. Maybe that was the issue

How do you know you didn't spike? Sometimes with sweets you'll have a delayed spike. Also how much protein and fiber did you have in your salad? It may have been enough to offset the cinnamon roll. Everyone has diff triggers with blood sugar. I seem to be able to handle bread, but pasta and rice spike me like crazy. Just got to find out what works.

I have no advice for you because i also do not understand GD this pregnancy. This is #3 for me and the last ! The only way i can stabilize my fasting blood sugars is for me to not eat anything after 6-7pm It doesn’t make any sense. If i have a bedtime snack that’s recommended I’m over 100 in the morning. Without the snack I’m in the 80s.

Oh, I’m so here with you. It seems to make no sense. I wish I had sprung for the continuous monitor because I feel like, depending on the time of day that I eat it, and what I’ve eaten beforehand, I can eat almost anything without spiking. I have taken to testing twice, at 1 hour and 2 hours, sometimes to make sure I’m still ok after I eat ice cream, for example. The diabetes educators have also advised me that sometimes meals high in fat content will mask the sugar spike. So for something like a cinnamon roll, maybe that is possible?

I find I can get away with more in the morning. I do take night time insulin so maybe a delayed effect? Also, salad first always helps. Anything with a lot of fiber first.

It could just be the time of day due to changing hormone levels. I struggle at breakfast and have to stay under 15g of carbs. But I can easily handle 50g+ at dinner, depending on the types.
