Was there ever an actual break up with Dave? I know he went to college in California and then Mrs Kim wanted to send him the marriage jug, but do we ever actually hear that they broke up? I believe the marriage jug episode that’s the last he’s mentioned?
I feel like they let that storyline fade out, understandably. The actor wasn’t coming back. I get that teens can’t always survive the distance but considering how significant he was to Lane, and also he was the best boyfriend in GG’s history let’s be real, I wish we had gotten a mention of the break up.

If you ever watch the DVDs with the commentary, at some point they talk about how the plan was originally for Dave's character to be developed long-term for the series and evolve within Stars Hollow & be huge in Lane's life, but when Adam Brody got offered the larger role on the OC and decided to take it, they wrote him out and continued the "baby daddy with Lane's band boyfriend" plot line with Zach.
They made a backhanded reference to it as a friendly "dig" at Adam for "ditching" them with the line about him "going ro California for college" (s4 ep4).
You can kind of see how they were lining him up to gradually try and woo Mrs Kim, and later when she responds to the news of Lane's pregnancy with "a baby is a great blessing" and "congratulations" I could totally see this being her response to Dave Regowski as opposed to Zach.
Lane has an amicable divorce, they run into each other at a gig in their late thirties when the boys head off to college. They live happily ever after.

But if you want to know about his character in the show, my theory is that he died of a broken g-string (his guitar not his underwear) as karma for making Lane sad.

My theory is always that he went into witness protection and changed his name. Got a fake family and history etc. The OC could totally be in the same universe as GG lol

Absolutely! I’m going to headcanon that he never left California after moving there for college and his parents got divorced/moved to different places as well (hence why we literally never hear from him again).
Maybe he becomes a music producer? Respectfully, idk how I feel about his chances making it as a solo guitarist but I could totally see him getting involved in the behind-the-scenes aspects of the music industry. He’s super detail-oriented (reading and memorizing the Bible in one night??) and seems genuinely knowledgeable and passionate about music. Maybe this is just my Dave/Lane loving heart, but I feel like Hep Alien could have gone a lot farther if he had stayed in the group
He finally solved the case of the missing Gracie Gulliver and restored his reputation as a detective, albeit with a lot of trauma....
