The $898 one says "Pixel6ProStormy128GB"

andrewmackoul

I'd like to see the DPCI number.

thecrowing08

https://twitter.com/thisistechtoday/status/1449909532939804678

andrewmackoul

Thanks. The only thing I wonder is if Target is putting random pricing as a filler.

ThisIsTechToday

Placeholder prices are 1 cent at Target.

PKMN_CatchEmAll

Mate. Can you explain this madness? The Pixel 6 is $100 *less* than the Pixel 5 - I can't wrap my head around that. The Pixel 6 Pro is $898 - $200-$300 less than the iPhone 13 Pro Max and Galaxy S21 Ultra respectively. This sounds too good to be true.

Yoojinlee

It might be too good to be true but there might be a chance since there have been news articles and reports that Google is really trying to actually get into the smartphone market for real this time around and are investing serious money and advertising this go around. Enough so that they told investors that earnings might be affected because of the push and it's possible that an aggressive price could be part of it. Of course, it could just be too good to be true but that's a possible reason it *might* be true.

Soggy-Material-4930

I will like to think it's an aggressive move. Right up till now, the pixel brand is mostly known by tech enthusiast.. Probably google is about to stake their claim on this market hugely dominated by Samsung and Apple.. and a penetrative pricing strategy is only logical

SnipingNinja

Could be the non mmWave version is 600

PKMN_CatchEmAll

Would they really sell two different versions of the Pixel 6 in the US? One with mmWave and one without mmWave? I don't think so. I think it'll either have mmWave or not have it and that'll be the only model.

thecrowing08

Idk if they do that with phones. I just hope its priced like that because they want to be aggressive and not because of it being a midrange or anything.

andrewmackoul

Right. Do you think the pricing is low enough to be an error? I would love for the phones to be that aggressively priced but I feel we're all getting ready for disappointment/shock.

thecrowing08

I honestly think its because they want to be aggressive. Everything I've seen seems to point to a flaship type phone.

andrewmackoul

You may be right. Doing a Google search for 'target leak placeholder pricing' shows results about the PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Apple Products with similar pricing.

PekingGoose

I remember arguing with someone that asking for a $600 price point at launch for either of the phones would be insane given the Pixel 5's mid-range offering last year at $700. I'll gladly eat my words if this is true (even better if this includes the mmWave tax).

United-Radio7672

Kinda explains discontinuing the 5 since who would buy it if you can get a better phone $100 cheaper

[deleted]

[удалено]

a2zKiller

This. Drop the P5 to like 400 and I will buy it.

FriendlyLawnmower

Well the other angle you have to consider is the on going chip shortage. Each chip resource that gets diverted to a pixel 5 is one less than what goes towards making new pixel 6s. In another year, they could have existed together. Not in our current situation though

CafecitoHippo

I'm looking to snag one on Swappa once the 6 comes out for around that price. There's just zero chance I get the Pixel 6. Its way too big.

TangerineEffective30

i'm definitely selling my 5. i want the bigger screen (eyes getting worse)

Country-Mac

They don’t want to support the old third party chips a day longer than necessary. Not worth selling it if they have to keep it up to date and secure.

jerryvo

no inventory

MiNuN_De_CoMpUtEr

https://forums.redflagdeals.com/london-drugs-google-pixel-5-399-99-ymmv-store-only-2496250/ A chain in Canada started lowering the price for P5

windrunnerxc

Just had to go hunt down a 5 for my wife. Completely losing the small phone format is a dealbreaker for her - a phone (the Pixel 6) that's essentially the same size as my 3XL won't work in her purse or pants pockets. It feels silly, but it's the realistic reason why she's going to be using that 5, and probably for a while given the market trends.

bkoppe

It's not silly at all. What's silly is selling only gigantic phones that a large portion of people can't use with one hand and can barely fit in any of their pockets or purses. I'm going to get the Pixel 6 and try to use it because I'm really looking forward to everything else about it, but I'm seriously worried that both I and my partner may end up returning the phone if it's too big for us to use comfortably.

Bureaucrat_Conrad

2013 Moto X fit my hand perfectly. My thumb could reach 95% of the screen. I loved that phone.

JFreaks25

the only people screaming for a small phone are on reddit, as proved by the worst selling iphone last year was the mini

DangoQueenFerris

Edit: Pricing confirmed. October 28th Street date. https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/qacdd7/pixel_6_prices The only possiblity I can think of that would make this true is the fact that Google is paying less for their soc they designed than whatever Qualcomm was offering. Still I can't see any company willingly passing the savings along to the customer these days. Unless Google really is finally 1000 percent serious about gaining market share. More market share is more info to advertise to potential customers.

SmarmyPanther

I'm not so sure their SoC is so much cheaper than using Qualcomm tbh. The Qualcomm chips are used at a much wider scale (Samsung, Chinese OEMs, etc) which would (I assume) reduce the costs of getting those chips. A custom batch of a few million vs Qualcomm pumping out tens of millions

basement-thug

That would be true if Google was Qualcomm. Just because Qualcomm makes tens of million of chips doesn't mean they sell them cheaper, just means they can ship more product. With Google in control the relatively small few million soc's they produce could cost less or the same as what they would pay a third party. They also could be following the modern gaming console model, sell at a loss to gain market and recoop losses with the inevitable gains from new accounts/subscriptions. At some point they will break even and then profit. So whose fab is actually making Google silicon anyways.?

DangoQueenFerris

Samsung fab. Which is kind of a letdown. Samsung is lagging a fair deal behind tsmc in terms of performance and power efficiency on their same process nodes (going by marketing terms 6nm vs 6 nm for example) Though I expect general CPU performance will be fine anyhow. Google is going all in on ML/AI and that's where tensor is going to shine.

[deleted]

Idk man a YouTuber(reliable) has said that Qualcomm is taking a big premium for SOCs and it is why realme is opting for more mediatek SOCs This Realme opting for Mediatek was said to him by the company officials

Gundam_net

This could explain it. If so, qualcomm is finished. No way samsung is going to keep using them when Google is producing phones hundreds of dollars below their galaxy equivalents. They have their exynos chip they may as well just use it.

[deleted]

Yeah Samsung just need to optimise those chipsets and then Qualcomm would be limited to Xiaomi and BBK Btw vivo has started making their own chipsets and in a few more years everyone's going to ditch Qualcomm unless they cut their margins, provide longer support and actually improve their SOCs

geneing

Plus they still have to pay Qualcomm for IP.

embeddedGuy

What makes you say that? Where's Qualcomm IP come into the picture for the P6?

Time4Red

Qualcomm owns a lot of the IP around modems, LTE, 5G, ect. They could subsist on revenue from IP alone. Qualcomm hasn't sold an SOC to apple in years, yet Apple makes up a substantial (>10%) chunk of their revenue. That's how valuable the IP is.

DangoQueenFerris

I'm sure you're right about scale of economy, though. If I recall correctly Samsung wafers are a lot cheaper than tsmc. I don't know if the snapdragon 888 is tsmc or Samsung node, but if they are tsmc this can also explain the price difference to some extent. Also Samsung 6 nm isn't nearly as good as tsmc in terms of performance or power efficiency. My biggest concern will be battery life honestly. Thank goodness the display will be ltpo. IF, and that is a big IF... These prices are real, or not part of some promotion special to target, then Google must be selling at next to no profit to gain market share aggressively in the US. They always seem to focus on the US the most for everything else so it could possibly make sense. These prices just don't match up with the other leaked European prices. I know other countries kinda get hosed on prices but this is way worse than usual.

SmarmyPanther

Yeah I'd love to know their margin. Especially given how aggressive they are going be spending on marketing and promotion (according to Max W.)

DangoQueenFerris

If the prices really are this aggressive in the us they will be taking a play right out of amazons book. (Aggressively priced hardware with Alexa to the point of possible loss on hardware to establish market share)

LucidStrike

I mean, it's really more like a textbook. Trading margin for marketshare and even 'loss leading' is pretty standard strategy, especially in tech. The real value of the devices is often in the establish platform for other profit schemes.

stevenseven2

>would (I assume) reduce the costs of getting those chips. Your calculation is the cost of producing the units, not in their price. I'm quite sure the QC chips, due to economy of scale, experience and also more in-house designs (their own modem, their own GPU, their own DAC, etc.) are cheaper to produce. But they're not cheaper to sell. Qualcomm are legendary for being super-predatory in their business, due to various patent licenses that they hold over the market with. Apple only license modems from QC, and yet even they complained about how the royalty for this alone was higher than all of their other licenses combined. We know from previously that QC demand profit margin percentages of the phones using their chip. So they sell one component, but demand the profit from the entire phone. Although we have no direct insight, we also know from previously disclosed deals that Qualcomm has demanded profit percentages from their customers for not just the phones that use their chips, but even those that don't. In a scenario like that it's cheaper for Google to use its own flagship SoCs in all of their units, rather than its own flagship SoC in a few and, say, a low-end Snapdragon in some other.

ilinamorato

Probably market share, yes. Possibly a loss-leader, though I kinda doubt it. But I think it's pretty likely that they ditched mmwave.

DangoQueenFerris

No. mmwave has been leaked in the repair videos and manuals. Also price confirmed.with 28th Street date. https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/qacdd7/pixel_6_prices

RAC360

I'm gonna go with them ditching mmwave as a likelihood of zero to none. Absolutely no way.

[deleted]

I'm hoping they forgot mmwave. It's a waste for most people.

TheWanderingSuperman

Yo, this is the rumor I hope is true! I'd absolutely upgrade to Pro if it is $898!!

joeygladst0ne

Same, I'd really like the Pro but was thinking it would be over $1000. Seeing 3 digits really makes it more palatable.

Alphawolfdog

That's just for a 128GB version. I'd gladly pay more for a 1/4 terabyte though

frameset

That'd work for me tbh, I don't even store that much on my phone these days, it's all in the cloud.

thegreyquincy

That's a fkkn steal if it's true. Damn! When they said it would be priced in the "premium" category I felt like they were priming us for $1100 for the Pro.

Zuli_Muli

I mean if these prices are true then I could see the 512gb one at that price, maybe even $1200 if they jump $100 for the 250gb and another $200 for the 512gb on top of the 256gb.

Kenobiiiiii

That'd what I wanna know more than anything, I want the 512gb :)

>9point A poster on a different thread said a best buy had them in the backroom on a pallet no one was allowed to touch until zero hour.

October 28th Street date https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/qacdd7/pixel_6_prices

revanzomi

Same here. I'll fork over basically whatever I have to, even if I don't really want to. But what I really want is to actually get the thing after months of them hyping it.

hardonchairs

FYI I bought my "unlocked" pixel2xl from target but it turned out to be an unlocked Verizon version with a locked bootloader

ilkhan2016

$900 for a pro would be me getting an upgraded capacity version instead of base. But I don't believe it.

RSCLE5

Yea. Of that's the case night consider 256 instead of 128gb. Or might just stick with it and save some unexpected $.

JSK23

I have 64GB on my 4XL (which is just starting to get full), not sure I need 256GB, but I would be tempted if its only $1000

metalkhaos

I have the 128GB on my 5 and uh, just barely using half the space on it. I'm good with 128GB.

[deleted]

[deleted]

For sure! I was thinking of switching to the A series of pixel phones, but if the 6 is going be priced that low, I'll probably just buy that

doema

that's if they've already secured inventory for the holidays and not suffering due to global chip shortage like everyone else

DangoQueenFerris

I was going to buy the 512 model pro even when I was anticipating that base 128 was going to be 1099. If this is true in stoked. EU price conversions put the 128 pro at 999 which still better than I expected. This is quite honestly too good to be true. At these prices I'd buy a pro and a regular 6 for my mom even though I just got her a phone last year.

United-Radio7672

$599 for the Pixel 6 is a good price!

DeathMoJo

Stoked if its legit. I settled on going with the non-pro and still prepared for a $700-750 price point. Got a buyer lined up for my 5.

MadDoe

How much are they asking for your 5? I hope the trade-in is good for the 5 at launch. ...

jkc_kev

I've seen Swappa sellers selling "mint" condition P5's for $550.

MadDoe

$550?? Absurd, i gotta hop on that real quick

DeathMoJo

Yup. Co worker offered $500.

justinbl4ck

I just bought one from Swappa for $450. Sage with the official Google case. Kinda regret it now if these prices are accurate.

[deleted]

Bet my ass £599 in the UK and €599 or even €649 in EU.

jmedina94

If this is true, I am so glad I returned the 5a while I could. Lol.

GordonX

Maybe ditching Qualcomm allows them to price it ~$150 cheaper? Maybe the strategy is to price them cheap to lure and convert more of the Apple masses and get them in the Google ecosystem and win mindshare and brand loyalty for repeat purchases? "Go Nuclear" Strategy! They saw the success with the A Series at the low end. Apply it to the high end! Lure and Convert them with price and worry about fat margins later.

JSP0421

I've been confused why Google hasn't done this strategy for years. Google makes their money from the ads they sell. Take a loss on the device and make up the difference on the backend. Heck if the Pixel defaults to storing everything in the cloud, then you'll see a decent chunk upgrade to Google One and make even more money.

IHkumicho

My guess is because Google has a gentleman's agreement with the other Android manufacturers to not go below a certain percentage markup on their phones. Otherwise Google could sell phones at cost (so, like $350), gain a ton of market share, and utterly decimate the other manufacturers. However, Google doesn't want to do that. They're already getting a ton of money by Samsung, etc selling phones with Android OS, so why would they jeopardize that? No, for Google it's been a branding exercise so far, and they haven't really cared about actual sales numbers. Who knows if that will change with the 6, though?

GordonX

Yes. "Loss Leader".

thecrowing08

Pro is going to have a 512GB option though.

Accomplished_Fan_487

I guess you'd get into anticompetitiveness issues. However, selling without much profit margin would of course be a good strategy for consumers and google.

Accomplished-Tomato9

Im sure the regulators will love Google using its search/online ad monopoly to gain marketshare in hardware....

[deleted]

[удалено]

techraito

I doubt it. The A series sells like hotcakes. Considering how they've expanded to A-series earbuds now, I think I can see a pretty decent future for that line.

ebb5

Doubt it. The a series will probably be small screen (6 inches) with mid 6 range specs plus headphone jack

memtiger

I mean they can make a mid range CPU too and price the A series $100 cheaper than it currently is.

dude111

Giving free photo storage is an equivalent of adding $20- 30 over the course of a year to the cost of phone. If normal customer keeps phone for 3 years, that's a saving of $60-90 over the lifetime of the phone, or added upfront to the price of phone.

clvfan

$898 is too weird of an SRP to be real

DangoQueenFerris

Target does weird prices like this in my experience.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BROCKHAMPTOM

Their goal is to get you to refer to it as "eight hundred something" instead of "basically nine hundred"

dadoc04

My thoughts too

ru_benz

And even weirder than one is priced XX8 while the other is XX9.

Trader05

Particularly when every other cell phone price tag ends with 9. I'm leaning towards its fake, if its true, awesome!

VAVA_Mk2

Holy shit that is awesome if true

[deleted]

If true, this is the most fair phone pricing I've seen since OnePlus' glory days.

[deleted]

I don't understand why people don't believe this price. Google has repeatedly made a mistake of pricing its flagship phones at the same level as iPhones in the past only to make huge discounts on their unsold phones on black friday. Now, Google is finally being serious in phone business after realizing that it must undercut Apple in order to make customers try their devices and build fanbase. Google realized that it's not Apple little bit too late, but at least it's finally making the right move.

pastaandpizza

Totally believe this, although the Pixel 5 not getting essentially any deals last year (I think it was $50 off of Black Friday vs the insane hundreds-of-dollars-off offered for the pixel 4) and the pixel 5 was not priced competitively IMHO.

Kobahk

This was confirmed right according to the guy who posted it. [Link](https://twitter.com/EvanLei1/status/1449888739421872129?t=K5x0KQW-wRh2EATR1AG9wg&s=19)

I don't expect this to be true, but if it is then I'm definitely getting the Pro.

sageleader

Damn if this is true I'm definitely getting a Pro. Maybe even a 256 GB model.

superm1

If these prices are the same as Google directly why wouldn't you just get it from Target with 5% off redcard?

hardonchairs

Bought a 2xl from target and it turned out to be an unlocked Verizon version with a locked bootloader.

CorkyBravo

I use Google One, so I get the 10% back on G-store purchases. Gonna buy the phone, wait my 30 days for my kickback, then buy a charging stand, etc.

quarter-water

What's the typical usd:cad spread on these devices? Would this out the regular 6 at $749? If so that's an instant cop, but seems low.. Edit: leaked Canadian prices have $798 for the 6 and $1,190 for the Pro.

bohemian_plantsody

For reference, * iPhone 13 mini: $699 USD -> $949 CAD (exchange rate is $865 CAD) * iPhone 13: $799 USD -> $1099 CAD (exchange rate is $989 CAD) * Galaxy S21: $799 USD -> $1049 CAD (see above for direct exchange rate) * Pixel 4a: $349 USD -> $479 CAD (exchange rate is $432) * Pixel 5: $699 USD -> $799 CAD (see above for exchange rate) Google seems to be the kindest on giving us a break on the exchange rate. I would estimate either $749 or $799 for us.

samzorio

I believe canadian version of pixel 5 did not have the mmwave module for 5g which is why the phone was cheaper in canada even after exchange rate. Might be the case as well for pixel 6 / pixel 6 pro it has been confirmed that they have a sku without mmwave we will see on tuesday.

Seems way too good to be true. Perhaps this is with a launch promo Target is going to have? Google did say to expect inflated marketing costs, maybe selling these at a loss/break even to gain market share is part of the "marketing" budget?

AnynameIwant1

If Target was doing a promo or sale, it would be a 3x5 sign over the label. They don't change the shelf labels for sales. (I was a department manager at a Target for 5 years and one of my jobs was putting up and taking down sale signs.)

Ruff_Ryda

If true, this might be a Nexus moment.

-Bonfire62-

ksh_vi

I hope this is true, but it seems a little unlikely. I would have thought they would have started at $699 or $749. $599 is a steal. (except morons will still expect it on sale for $300 :D)

dericiouswon

Holy shit. If this is real then I'm all in. Was on the fence.

Correct-Criticism-46

This is great. Puts heaps of pressure on Samsung too. Good for everyone!

Unknown261092

If this is the actual pricing of the Pixel 6s, I'm definitely mashing F5 on the Google Store just to get one.

LightningX32

These prices are a big dick energy move by Google if true.

blaccsnow9229

I work in international logistics (ocean imports specifically). I can assure you they have some stock in the states already. They would delay the release if they didn't have some here already.

hire_richard_sherman

Do we get 5% off if we use the target red card?

Fun_Experience8362

This would get people to notice google pixel. They will probably price this phone cheap and then next gen will be $100 more.

Lowgybear117

Hold up It says the phones RELEASE on Tuesday???

kagenish

I been saying for some time that I think Google is still going to follow the price point they had from pixel 4 and below. Plus this is great since I always go for the xl, Which this time it's the Pro and maybe I'll go with more memory than 128gb.

Alphawolfdog

I think a 6 Pro with 256GB will be perfect

9pointkid

Why buy one when you can buy 2 at twice the price. ;)

jerryhou85

I thought the pro version came with 256 at beginning? 256-512-1T, according to Taiwan mobile carriers ad.

pastaandpizza

Does this imply the phones will purchasable on Tuesday? Can't imagine they'd have keep those empty shelves sitting there for a week?

raymondduck

$898 is pretty damn cheap. I will definitely pick one up at launch. I was expecting to fork out well in excess of $1000, so this would be really nice. Combine it with the small discount from credit card cashback and it's looking fantastic.

LucidStrike

$300 gap for the better display, larger battery, and telephoto? Seems strange. But I'm not used to shopping for flagships, so.

bartturner

I had already planned on getting the Pro and thought it would be $1199 USD. Best pricing I thought would be $1099. But $898 USD? Really? That would be just amazing but now makes the big problem getting one. AT that price they are going to be very difficult to obtain I suspect.

OnePeople592

If they're going to make the pro $898 they should have made the 6 $595 😁

[deleted]

Man, if that's true for the base Pixel 6... I just got the Pixel 5a for $450 few months ago. I definitely could have sprung for the base P6. Oh well, the 5a is probably the largest phone I could get on with and I think even the base 6 is larger than it. I'm still very happy with my 5a. Maybe the new design language and a midrange variant of Tensor will make it into a smaller Pixel 6a or 7a.

kpeng2

Now all I need it a good trade-in offer for my stupid S21

paulywolly

This seals the deal. Price was my biggest concern and I think it's all in for the 6 pro now.

takingtigermountain

$899 for the pro is exactly where i figured it'd be, that's perfect
