Switching from the Pixel 2XL that I used for a few years to the XS Max and being gifted a watch shortly after, I'm going to miss the reliability of getting notifications on my wrist during work. My Pixel 6 comes on November 3rd-4th, and in that mean time I want to find a nice watch to go along with it. I was really, really hoping they'd announce a companion piece yesterday.
I was hesitant with my 4XL..but the Galaxy Watch 4 works great. The only downside (which isn't even a problem once its set) is that syncing from the Samsung health app to Google fit. There is a 3 dollar app that does it and you can set it to do it automatically every x minutes or x hours. The watch and Samsung app work just fine and if I want my workout or steps or whatever to push to G Fit faster.. I open the sync app and hit the sync button and its done in about 2 seconds. Otherwise my default sync is 15 minutes.
Honestly, if you can pick up a Galaxy Watch 4 at a discount, I reckon you wll be happy with it. It's not as good as the new Apple Watch 6 and 7 but in my opinion, owning both, It's very close.
I would looove to see a pixel watch announcement! I'm so interested to see how the integration of wearOS with fitbit goes, but perhaps it's still too early for a finished product on that front.
While that is true, you don't get the haptics in the watch vibrating to let you know you're using a contactless payment method. It's just the fine details that keep it a samsung watch.
I don't even know why I would use a smart watch. It's just another device that I have to charge. Smart phones are so great because they integrate all functionalities in one device. A smart watch does the same stuff my phone does but worse which I always have one me anyways. I'd only use it for the fitness features for which I could just buy a fitbit.
But all power to the people who use them and need them!
My most frequent uses below:
Driving directions from my wrist, especially at a glance lane or turn indications.
Interacting with Spotify while working out.
Quickly tagging music on the watch while my phone stays in the pocket.
Voice texting back messages while playing sports or walking.
*these may not matter to everyone but these uses have sold me on a good smart watch*

Then my wife got her and I used Fitbit Versa watches for all of $50, the sort of thing that it doesn't really matter if I break you know? And I was very surprised to find that it fit into my life pretty seamlessly. Charge it for a couple hours in the morning every 3 or 4 days, otherwise it requires no maintenance and just... Does it's thing. Shows me the time, keeps track of my activity, reminds me to get off my ass with an unobtrusive tap on the wrist if I've been sitting too long.
Now that I've tried it, I actually like having it there. I like being able to read a text off my wrist when my hands are covered in tar and my phone is in my pocket. It's just convenient. Would I pay $800 for the privilege? No. But it is definitely a convenience having that sort of in-between for your phone.

I used my Fossil Gen 5 a lot before lockdown. To check notifications while driving and at work mostly. Then since lockdown began, I hardly use it except when riding my bike. Taking the phone out while pedaling uphill is a pain and the watch keeps track of heartrate etc.
I find it okay to take it out during uphill but I can imagine how the SmartWatch would be much more convenient in that case. Even still, if I'm riding a bike I don't want to check notifications or sth 😂 and for everything else I have my wahoo (incl WA notifications).
For me it's just...I don't to spend even MORE time on a device. When I check my notifications I usually reply immediately because that's why I'm on the phone in the first place.

I have a Garmin smartishwatch. The fitness features are a big draw.
In terms of smartwatch features, the biggest ones for me are being able to more discreetly check notifications during a meeting or something. I can see if a new message or text is important and urgent, or if it's just casual conversation, without having to look at my phone.
On this particular watch (Vivoactive 4) you can have the watch notify you of any notifications that come in on your phone (and you can individually choose which apps get to send notifications), just texts and phone calls, or no notifications. Then whenever you get a notification it'll pop up on the screen like if you got a text on your phone.
If you miss it when the notification pops up, there's a separate screen you can scroll to to view all notifications.
A smart watch is a cross between a FitBit and a smart phone. I was one of the last to get a smart phone in my family, but one of the first with a smart watch. I bought my Garmin for the health side (HR, SpO2, etc), but I have used my Garmin quite a bit for the smart watch side. The health side has quite literally saved my life due to my rare disease. The notifications are great, especially in the car when my phone is in my pocket. (It tells me if the notification was breaking news, text message, etc)
Sure! My condition requires diligent monitoring of my vitals (BP, HR, SpO2, etc). My smart watch has alarms for low or high HR, which let's me know I need to monitor my other vitals more carefully. (I get anaphylaxis a lot and the warning signs are more subtle than typical.) By having those alarms, it has allowed me to medicate myself earlier and avoid the hospital/anaphylaxis on multiple occasions.
Just about everything - food, scents, emotions, etc. If you're interested in the condition, it is called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (or Disease). Google will certainly provide a better explanation than I could here.
A smartwatch like the Pebble devices is all I need, and it does the job supremely well. Voice dictation and all just feels too gimmicky to warrant a $300-400 device, though. I wish there was another e-ink like watch.

I use a smart watch for the notifications. I am bombarded by notifications and it's really nice to just glance at my wrist rather than dig my phone out of my pocket just to see another spam email from PayPal or books a million.

Fitbit Versa 3. It has Google assistant, the battery lasts for five days, plenty of people use Fitbit (friend challenges), notifications and media controls work flawlessly, and most importantly THE BATTERY LASTS FOR FIVE DAYS.
If Google makes a Pixel Watch the likelihood of getting even three days out of the device is low.
Also, this article states that neither Fossil nor Mobvoi are making a Wear OS 3 watch this year which is misleading at best; both companies have watches that are going to upgrade to WOS3.
I have a Galaxy S 21 Ultra and the Galaxy Watch 4. Pixel 6 Pro ordered and from what I have seen and heard the watch will lose very little functionality pairing it with the Pixel 6 Pro. I think it's just blood pressure (which isn't available in the US anyway) and 1 other thing that escapes me ATM.
I had high hopes this year for a watch but it feels so unlikely now... I know we had those Jon Prosser "leaks" months ago, but they don't look very credible for multiple reasons. Also it's very fishy that we haven't gotten anything leaked since then? Usually we get something by now, assuming they're making an announcement "soon."
A watch with Soli, and a miniaturized Tensor chip would go a long way in working to complete their ecosystem. I'd imagine that 1. A custom chip even smaller than Tensor isn't ready yet. 2. They are still working with Fitbit to figure out the software front. 3. They still need to workout branding and where a Pixel watch fits in the Fitbit lineup considering they just refreshed their existing premium ($200-$300+) smartwatches.
