Different materials is fine. Mostly, I think they should rework an existing system that a) no one likes in its current state, and b) has a single purpose, instead of making a new one that has kind similar purpose. Scribing has many intermediate components that could have another use in homesteads, instead of just being literally "something to click with no other use than clicking again to craft something else".
I'd like to see scribing used instead of a new crafting discipline for homesteads.
