My dad doesn’t know what a distortion pedal is, pretty sure he loves me though. Could be a situation like that.

Palm muting is a cool technique frequently used with power chords (which are like the low part of a barre chord, you only need 2 or 3 fingers for these, very easy!) Learn these and you can sound rocky
I've never used a BCP amp. If it doesn't have a drive effect you will need a drive or distortion pedal.
