I have never ever seen scalloped frets that deep. I literally thought this was a r/guitarcirclejerk post before I clicked into it.

Normal_Salt_1070

Is it playable? What do you think?

xmac

Do you play at all? Did you try it out? If this is your first guitar, I wouldn't get it. Honestly it looks like a joke over the top guitar, but I could be wrong!

Normal_Salt_1070

I’ve never played scalloped and i got to play just a few seconds it was weird but idk

tragiskgeneration

Then surely Reddit users who have never touched the guitar will have an idea.

HamMasterJ

But I have FOMO on garbage! What _IF_ it _IS_ great garbage?? Spoiler: it’s not great 😂

Aboko_Official

Funny concept right? Theres an object sitting here, which I know nothing about. Others have passed on buying it, and although I know nothing about it, I am confident that its highly possible they were all idiots and missed out on the gold laying right here in front of them. "Theres no such thing as free lunch."

whtevn

It's unredeemable but arguably unique, gotta be somebody around here who identifies with that

Sin2K

If this isn't my reddit experience in a nutshell...

Feisty_Factor_2694

I can confirm, none of MY garbage is GREAT.

ShityShity_BangBang

lol

AutomaticAccident

I mean, anyone who's played guitar's gonna be skeptical and I think that's understandable.

HorseBach

Definitely not just scalloped frets— Someone made this to mimic a sitar/pipa style chordophone (hitting the notes indicated by the frets on this kind of neck means your finger isn’t touching the fretboard, but pushing down more raises the pitch microtonally). OR this is an attempt at a unique approach to a slide guitar. Buy this for sure, unique and could make some cool noises if the guts are replaced.

[deleted]

This wouldn't be any better as a slide guitar than a regular neck if the space between the strings and the actual frets isn't any different.

HorseBach

It looks like there is more space between the strings and the frets compared to a regular neck.

Zippo574

It may look like it but you would definitely have to raise the action on that guitar. those frets will make a knocking clicking sound when you try to place the slide on the strings

HorseBach

Yeah you’re right.

ItsNotForEatin

This is specifically a Vietnamese Phím Lõm. The Vietnamese guitar, properly known as Guitar Phím Lõm, comes from the southern region of Vietnam and is characterized by its scalloped fingerboard. It is used to perform traditional music Cải Lương, and is used in performance at funerals and other religious ceremonies. The scalloped fingerboard allows for the bending of strings so as to create an expressive vibrato sound.

HorseBach

Oh hell yeah this is the answer!

Continent3

That’s a pass.

[deleted]

I'm not going to say it's unplayable, but I can confidently say that if you try to play it like a regular guitar you'll have a hard time. If you want it and think it might be fun, just approach it as something you need and you'll have a good time. And as I'm sure others have said, the electronics may or may not work but it's totally possible to make them work even if it does require new pickups. Just depends how much you want to play it.

CallumBOURNE1991

I genuinly feel sick. Is this some kind of r/trypophobia

matorius

Whatever it is I felt it too. Same sort of feeling as when someone breaks their leg and you see the bone sticking out!

CallumBOURNE1991

Yes!! It doesn't look painful to play, but I have a visceral reaction to it like gore or violence. How bizrarre Kill it with fire OP.

4bigwheels

What even is that sub?

Crossfeet606441

This sub is more circlejerk than the actual circlejerk sub

saabbrendan

If those scalloped frets were ocean waves it would be the worlds largest tsunami ever recorded

Shit is au gratin at this point.

It will be shortly.

[deleted]

I mean, that's not entirely unheard of, they could do cool shit, it's that fucking fretboard for me lol

VanillaLifestyle

... What shit? In genuinely trying to think of what that many on/off switches can do for 3 single coils.

[deleted]

on board effects my dude, they wouldn't be the first to try it. If you keep reading through the comments, somebody has pointed out it is a vietnamese guitar for a traditional style of music that often includes an octave circuit and some effects

Consistent_Bread_V2

Please buy it. Like come on, it has insane charm even though it’s so silly.

ICU-CCRN

This is the type of guitar I play in bad dreams. Usually I’m on a stage, my part comes up to play a tasty solo, I look down I’m holding some weird instrument with a floppy neck, or it has 19 strings all the same size, or no tuners, or…., this

ostiDeCalisse

And you finish naked on stage.

Mslabarre

If you imagine the thickness of the neck and fretboard combined and pretend it’s not scalloped, it’s insanely thick. I don’t understand what’s going on with this thing. I’d maybe give 20 dollars, or pounds or euros or whatever

Mslabarre

I should add that I’ve paid more money for much dumber guitars. Eventually regretted it and now I’ve got a few collecting dust

jcoleman10

Alright. We are gonna need to see a guitar that's dumber than this, especially one you paid money for.

changee_of_ways

MOTHMAN BASS!

Mslabarre

No pic necessary. Went to a shop to inquire about upgrading a neck pickup on a cheaper telecaster copy. I don’t really know what a good tele pickup sounds like. The shop owner informed me that this was actually a decent pickup, and advised me to leave it alone. I had an itch to buy something. He had a very small inventory of guitars. One was an Epiphone Les Paul Special II. In almost three decades of casual twiddling with guitars, never had any kind of les Paul. This one was banged up too. BUT, I paid him the asking price. $169!!! I didn’t look it up or anything. All I knew is that Epiphone is Gibson’s cheaper stuff. It sucks. I never play it. I put ridiculously heavy strings on it to mess with very low tunings. Ended up bending the tailpiece. It sits there. Collecting dust. I really appreciated the guys advice though, so honestly, I don’t feel bad about it. Also, he threw in a set of strings. I think he felt guilty😂

Next-Employment8087

looks like something modified here in Vietnam where I'm from for Vọng Cổ music: https://youtu.be/TsoQjIudrY4?si=i6qFVLxlGJhCJyjs basically a super scallopped fretboard for lots of micro bends and vibratos, also I bet some of those mini switches are for an octave circuit as well, a must have effect for the genre!

gonzoman92

Yep glad someone else said this, 100% a Vietnamese custom for traditional southern music

[deleted]

I want one now. There is definitely a space for that in what I play, especially with an inbuilt octave circuit. I'm imagining the warbles and texture i could squeeze into just basic chords for some vapor-ish style stuff

RiskyManoeuver

Cool, I would buy then!

ShityShity_BangBang

This is probably the most accurate comment yet, just because I trust this person.

ShityShity_BangBang

I would buy that guitar for $100 on the spot.

VanillaLifestyle

Oh this is cool as fuck

muziani

Dude that was badass…..never heard that before

CanadianJ

Good luck with intonation. Not much adjustable on that bridge.

3rdGenCamaro91

That's what I thought too. Why go to all the trouble to build a shred guitar with all the options in the world electronically and put the worst bridge on it. LMAO

[deleted]

It's a great example of someone with lots of ideas about what, a vague notion of why, and no clue about how.

Thenastybeats

It's definitely a terrible bridge, but no different adjustability-wise than a PRS machined stoptail.

skipmyelk

GFS makes a great brass replacement. Gives you intonation adjustment, not just 2 grub screws

robaplantas

I could just hear how bad it sounds after seeing that bridge, good luck you can just change it - do that

RemotePotatoe

Why does the bridge look like the thing that holds the springs inside a strat

RuinedByGenZ

Thing looks absolutely useless tbh

gonzoman92

For traditional Vietnamese music. Not useless!

JohnTDouche

It's fascinating to me how many people in this comment section are so confident in their ignorance that they will declare this guitar useless before they even know what it's supposed to be, what it's intended to be used for.

gonzoman92

Absolutely crazy how people don’t have a clue what something is and will label it “useless” lol think the whole of south Vietnam disagrees

VirtualPaddock

This looks like the sort of guitars used to play the Vietnamese [Vong Co](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nTTyxdPpr0) style of music. They often use those ridiculously deeply scalloped fretboards. I'd love to play one of those - probably feels very different to even a usual scalloped fretboard though (which I've got on a few of my guitars).

Rambles_Off_Topics

You nailed it. OP Google 'Vietnamese guitar" and there are tons that look exactly like yours. Here is one of the first links and the guitar looks almost identical to yours! Sweet find. https://note.com/torigoyasound/n/n03f327903118

flonky_tymes

This is exactly what I thought when I saw OP's pic. A few years ago the YouTube algorithm decided I needed to hear some Vong Co music, and it was right! I've never seen one in real life, much less played one either, but would love to try it.

ShityShity_BangBang

Correct. You guys helped me learn something today.

BurritoXIII

💥💥💥 I need this

easedownripley

This thing is very weird. I've never seen anything like it. If you're going to buy it, understand its probably going to be a weird novelty thing that won't see a lot of use but maybe a goofy once in a while kind of deal.

senorpuma

I would buy it for the novelty and potentially unique sounds, for the right price. No more than $50. And then I’d replace the bridge and (probably) the pickups. Idk it’s kinda neat. Also I dislike bursts so I’d paint it too.

Lefties13

Is firewood expensive in your area?

Basic-Government4108

Is it an electric sitar? Are there additional sympathetic strings anywhere? Because that would be cool. You could get droney, sitar sounds out of it. Be like John McLaughlin out of Shakti.

jansensan

Was thinking something along those lines: maybe a slide guitar with bending?

TofuChewer

Yngwie Malmsteen is jerking off in the corner while watching this pictures.

DirtTraining3804

We all know yngwie is jerking off in front of the mirror

burritobandito90

That’s the first scalloped fretboard I’ve seen where you can actually store scallops in between the frets.

kneeken

this is suited for vietnamese folk guitar!! I'd take it off your hands

ShityShity_BangBang

I would love to have it!

HamMasterJ

The first few frets aren’t scalloped frets at all. Those are Tech Deck finger skateboard half pipes. Never seen scallops that deep. Ever.

mynamejulian

Useful if you play slide and don’t have any need for the frets. This is a silly build without much thought put into it. Your finger tips wouldn’t last long with this level of “scalloping”

DirtyRatLicker

GOOD LORD-

lynnskye

its def one of those 60s-70s knock off asian guitars, just by the sunburst, bridge, and electronics

Machoopi

Not worth it. Matter of fact, that's a dumpster guitar right there. Not even worth taking for free imo. The scalloping job on that fretboard is ridiculous first off. There's no need to go that deep on a scallop and scalloped fretboards for most people are kind of a novelty anyway. Second.. the string height is absolutely insane here and it looks like it's not just because the neck needs adjusting, and that bridge doesn't look like it can go any lower, so I'm not sure you can really fix that problem. The combination of the string height and the scalloped frets means you're probably going to be bending the shit out of every note when you play it, both because you have to push the string down so far to fret it in the first place, then because you have to somehow prevent yourself from pushing it too far due to the scalloping, which is significantly harder when you have to navigate that big of a gap between string and fret. I don't even know how you'd begin to fix these problems. Maybe if you replaced the bridge with something that can adjust in height you could get the action of the guitar a bit lower. I don't know what kind of bridge that is, or if it's easily replaceable, but I'm guessing that part wouldn't be too bad. Once you get the strings lower, you kind of have to hope the neck is straight and the frets are level as well. If you need fretwork done, good luck finding someone who will work on this thing. Lastly... if someone plugs the guitar in and it doesn't work you have absolutely no way of knowing if those pickups are hot garbage or not. If this was my guitar, I'd just replace the whole pickguard and go back to three knobs, one selector. My guess is one of those sets of switches is an on/off switch for each pickup, and the other.. well, I don't know. Maybe phase reversal for each pickup? Unless those pickups are stacked, I don't really know what three extra switches would do. Knobs.. your guess is as good as mine. Could be a volume for each pickup, could be master volume, 3 tones.. could be anything. The point here.. is that figuring out where the wiring is messed up is going to be an absolute nightmare and is probably not worth it. The good news is that now the pickguard has a million holes in it, so you kind of have to just leave everything there or replace all of it. Last and most important part of this. NOBODY is going to do all of this stupid shit to a nice guitar. It's almost a guarantee that this guitar was a cheap POS to begin with and that's the only reason they felt comfortable taking an angle grinder to the fretboard and trying to wire the pickups like an F-16 dashboard. Even if this guitar were a semi decent guitar originally, I still don't know that I'd be willing to buy it. Only use case I can see for purchasing this guitar is if the body is super high quality and that's the only thing you were using. 99% sure that's not going to be the case here.

gonzoman92

It’s for traditional Vietnamese music… they all look like this!

[deleted]

ShityShity_BangBang

Why so serious?

Repulsive-Anything47

Sir I think someone chomped out a section of your fretboard

johnnyko55555

Needs more switches and deeper scalloping on the fret board.

retrovertigo23

I would let the seller know that if it had two or three more knobs you'd be willing to pay their price but as it is you can give them $3.50.

sacredgeometry

I mean its the weirdest looking "fender" strat I have ever seen. Is it worth it? If you dig it. For me? Ahhaha no.

TheHarshCarpets

It’s probably just a wannabe sitar, and would be fun to play. It’s likely just the input jack’s wires if it doesn’t make any noise. I would definitely snag it if It’s playable, and the price is right.

Visual-Vacation4267

Was this supposed to be posted on r/guitarcirclejerk

tinc2k

This looks like a bunch of terrible experiments on a guitar that was shit to begin with. Avoid like the plague.

Kurtsune

How much does it cost?

klummmb

If it seems fun to play or fun to fix, its worth it. If your goal is to make this a regular guitar... you can buy a playable guitar cheaper than the work and cost of spare parts to get this back to normal. The neck scallops make no sense, the neck thickness also does not make sense. Maybe this was modified to mimic something like a Chinese pipa lute (see acqueous transmission by Incubus) where you use the pressure behind a fret to create vibrato? Or a whacky slide guitar? Literally everything has been modified on this guitar. This is a project that may be workable with a cheap fix. The fact that it is not working is probably a wiring issue that could be resolved by an amateur with a little soldering experience, but because of the complicated electronics, could be much more involved. The neck is presumably replaceable if this was once an actual fender guitar. Just some wild ass guesses on what the controls could be: 3 independent on/off switches for each pickup 3 phase reverse switches? 3 independent volume knobs 1 master tone knob

Zestyclose-Row8516

hello fellow Bulgarian

armedwithturtles

I want you to get it just because I’m so curious how the hell that thing plays

Aromatic_Toe7605

I hope whoever made this work of art gets to see this, its the humbucker-style 4 knobs that do it for me💀💀

Apprehensive_Toe6736

That is ridiculous,I want it

This-Was

Just get it and post regular updates. We need to see how this pans out.

CountBreichen

That’s the most hideous guitar i’ve ever seen. I really want it.

Perfect_Ad1585

Not for me. But good luck on what you decide

MrCondor

Think how thick that slab of rosewood must have been for the fretboard to allow for that extend of scalloping.....

somehobo89

$30 yes. You will likely never figure out what all that wiring is lol. But I’d want it just for that. My hope would be that the jack isn’t even soldered or something and it’s an easy fix, or the current owner was using the wrong combination of those switches. It’s not like there are a lot of combos to figure out 😂

Big_Conversation_704

The more I look at this the worse it gets

Smoovie32

To quote Luke Skywalker, “What a piece of junk!?!?!”.

clevebilly

I really hope that's not an actual Fender.

ShrekxFarquaad69

after a second look I couldn't stop laughing, don't buy this if you plan on playing it.

frankybling

I haven’t played a scalloped neck that was done that deep before, I have played a scalloped fretboard guitar and I was really surprised how much I hated it.

Dr_Eviler

If this is your first guitar don’t buy it. You can get a decent guitar to start out on it for just a little more money.

Normal_Salt_1070

Nope not my first

MeatlessComic

NOPE

southsider2021

What in the bubba fuck?

krebstar42

Definitely not how you scallop a fretboard.  I'd buy just to see how it's wired and try to figure out why it's wired that way.

troyofyort

is it me or the neck both twisted and bowed?

Jealous-Carob-7745

Seems legit.

cwnorman

It's all good until the angry Ogre comes looking for his custom-made strat.

mendozabuttz

Is it worth what? How much are they paying you to take it?

AmazingAd2765

Looks like an awful first guitar, but I would probably try to negotiate and buy it as a novelty. I've never seen a guitar with that many many switches and can't even recognize the bridge. Looks like a partscaster someone made for fun.

Art_Music306

Maybe one of those switches makes the fretboard normal?

tardcore101

I think you should hold out for more switches and deeper scalloping.

CrimsonGrimm

A poor man's lap-steel/slide guitar? That's my most generous benefit of the doubt I can give here.

spaceghost893

That's what they used to use out in the garden to scare the Crows away. Maybe $10 just to have something to laugh at when customers are here.

cram96

Yeah for that price, I wouldn't expect to ever really play it but it's a good conversation piece to have on the wall.

ScotusRetirementAt75

Yea why not if it’s gonna be cheap. The pickups and electronics alone might be worth that much. Why didn’t you post a picture of the headstock? Body might not be real fender fyi: left horn looks too long

Clash65

I would call this a hard pass! It’s an f’n mess!

eastcounty98

No, not enough knobs and switches

DarnTootin5

I’d buy it for the novelty and see if I could get it working. But I’m also not the most fiscally responsible person.

plainjanesanebrain

This looks to me like it's someone's homemade lap-steel conversion, lay it down in your lap and play it with a slide, could be cool!

FattusBaccus

I’ve seen and tried to play with scalloped frets like this but I couldn’t get used to it so I quit pretty quickly. I kept fat fingering everything. I’m more of a rhythm player and I think this is geared to more of a lead, and a rather talented one at that who really has light hands and incorporates a lot of vibrato into their playing.

paperplanes13

well there might be $120 worth of hardware in it. do you need a bunch of toggle switches?

CCraMM

Isn’t this for slide playing?

stabsthedrama

This is the stupidest guitar I think I've ever seen posted here that wasn't a straight up meme. Buy it as a wall decoration.

juliano7s

This hurts my eyes

xZOMBIETAGx

The literal opposite of a fretless neck

Bodach-Fuath

If it’s gonna be your only guitar then no, don’t buy, if you already own a guitar and don’t mind losing the cash, buy it, your gonna have a fun trying to fix her up even if you fail you’ll learn loads and end up with a strange/weird looking wallhanger

Extra-Spare5490

I think you would use a beer bottle and slide it up and down the neck. Yea. That's how it's done.

SirGorehole

Jesus Christ dude don’t buy this dogshit.

didi2120

That doesn't look like a chinese knock off it looks more like a very cheap luthier work, Personally I won't spend money on that, better save that money and buy a second brand guitar. Here un Perú we have luthiers that make similar very cheap guitar (about us$50 or less) all hand made but in a very bad way, unaligned frets, no correct fret dimensions, those artesanal bridges, handmade pickups, a lot of switches, etc. it's better yo buy a chinese guitar because it is made with cnc machines and with some work it will be a decent playable instrument.

Lusrevision

That’s unplayable

WillTFB

I'd be surprised if that thing ever worked

JustUrAvgLetDown

Lmao don’t buy

Seref15

I wouldn't.

0mib0ng

Good luck changing the strings that appear to be glued into the nut

mittenciel

This guitar is absolutely worth it for the one person who needs this exact thing. It’s kind of amazing.

S_L_Raymond

Could probably tune it like a Koto and play it horizontally.

Killt_

What in gods name is that abomination

Simple_Mechanic_6999

The fretboard is insane, but let’s not forget ALL THOSE SWITCHES AND KNOBS

Roner3000

🤮🤮🤮

shoepolishsmellngmf

This sub has definitely become more of a parody than GCJ.

HiveFiDesigns

Are there even electronics in that thing to replace? I’d bet thr majority of those switches and knobs don’t connect to anything. This just looks like somebody took all the parts lying around in their work room, glued it together and hung it on a wall. Would I take it off somebody’s hands to screw around with and try to make it playable? Sure why not…would I give somebody money for this thing? Not much if anybody, I’d be doing them the favor saving them a trip to the dump.

mitkase

For that, I’d say take a chance if it’s not a sacrifice. Worst case it’s a decoration, but heck with a few bucks In you may have found your #1. You never know

Vegetable_Berry2130

Toblerone neck

DMala

Neck aside, I want to know how it’s wired. Four knobs and six mini-toggles for an SSS configuration? I’d guess (hope?) the knobs are 3 volumes and a master tone. I guess three toggles must be on-off, since there’s no selector. I can’t imagine what the other three are, though. Coil taps? Phase? That bridge is pretty funky, too. Someone looked at the three saddle Tele bridge and said, “That’s waaaay too adjustable for my taste.”

vin_unleaded

Got enough nobs and switches mate? Edit: What is that fretboard? 🤔

DepartmentAgile4576

dude, thats the kinda shit im into… ye someone went for a sitarstyle bendable guitar. you dont show the headstock so i dont know if its fender. the Body and hardware and pickups clearly isnt imho . some 70s80s junk. that burst attempt at the upper horn wouldve never left any squier/fender factory. but: 4pots? what do they do? what are the 3 switches doing at the red led? look down the edges of the fretboard and try to bring the fretends in line , that way you get an idea if the neck is warped, and playable. a slight bend is adjustable. but no propeller blade. beginners guitar? NO! project? hell yea. dumno what your monthly income is but i would offer what you would pay for a stand to hang your clothes over when you go to bed, comfortably. ridding you learn on old horses 😉

not_a_damn

I would rather play on a cheese grater fretboard than this, sorry.

Biggyzoom

I want to know more than anything what all those knobs and switches do but €60 for that monstrosity? No way. It doesnt even work.

_Larry

This is one of Spinal Tap's guitars that didn't make the final edit.

DepartmentAgile4576

lol! reddit is fun. BUY!

[deleted]

The action on that guitar is all wrong

Rapscagamuffin

That fretboard literally makes me want to barf

Flying_Fox_86

that fretboard isn't even scalloped it's straight up BORED.

KarV_Wor

Goes hard

zappga

that’s not scalloped frets, that’s no frets at all LMFAO. anyways, no, i don’t even think that’s playable having a toblerone bar as a guitar sounds funny, though. it’s cheap too so it’s technically not worth it, but honestly maybe as a collectible

AngryBeerWrangler

It’s a Hot-wheels display

bringme5

Hardware doesn't look like it's in a great state. I wouldn't pay much more than 10-15 personally. I guess its whatever is worth to you. Gonna deffinitely take some work

Dirks_Knee

That neck looks like an attempt to be able to perform Sitar like bends, might be cool for something like that. Likely unplayable as a traditional guitar.
