There's a few things that were quite interesting to me 1) We got lucky winning both coin flips. I'm not sure how big of an edge being in front of the North Bank is, but taking the first penalty is a well known and decent sized edge. 2) Our analytics team did a far better job than their analytics team of guessing which way they would shoot. 3) Our players looked so confident stepping up and taking. We were so prepared for this eventuality it cannot be understated. Going forward it could be strategically correct to play for penalties vs certain opponents if the 2nd/3rd edge are real. Credit to Mikel and the team, this was a very valuable match to win - not just for the fans but going forward too. £10m for getting to the next round, plus TV revenue, matchday sales, everything else that comes with it.

that2ndthing

Being in front of the North Bank is huge. Tbh being at the Emirates at all is huge, but the away fans are in the Clock End. Winning that coin flip means the Porto players have to stand and stare at a wall of noise, a sea of people who want them to fail, people trying to distract them behind the goal. If it puts their mind off for even a fraction of a second it can be enough to unbalance their prep, make them rush their run up or put doubt in their mind about what side to shoot. It's an enormous advantage, I believe there's been studies on it. Their players were visibly more nervous than ours. Going first is also a huge advantage, so is the amount of time we take on our pens. Saw the same thing vs City in the community shield shootout. They all rushed their pens, taking only a couple of seconds after the whistle. Our all took upwards of like 7 seconds after the whistle to compose themselves and take the shot So many little mind games go into it, penalty shootouts are not a lottery by any stretch of the imagination. I cant remember the stats but I'm pretty sure having everything onside can edge it as much as 70% in your favour. I remember after the women's euros (I think?) there was a piece about all the tricks. It included stuff like not bothering to do last second prep and instead focusing on bothering the opponents, being the first team out of the huddle so that you can line up in the middle of the centre circle and force the other team off to the side so they have a longer walk, things like that. Wish I could find that piece, think it was BBC

alphabetjoe

Also, that neon guy.

Xeszc

tropical fish kit strikes again.

bearwoodgoxers

Arteta is the kind of guy who will take an inch of an advantage and make a mile out of it. Penalties are a big part of knockout football and he's clearly been getting the squad to not just train pens but also have a concrete strategy for a shootout. Serious business, raising standards.

Brohan_Cruyff

adding on, part of the longer approach is that it forces the keeper to be “on” longer, tense and alert. i’ve never been a keeper at a level higher than “banter futsal” but i have to imagine that’s draining, not that it’s likely their keeper was saving saka or rice’s pens anyway

vin_unleaded

Kicking to the home end was the big one. I was screaming "GET THE FUCK IN!" in North Bank Lower when we won the first toss and there's people looking at me like I've got three heads. IYKYK. Noise from the North Bank was unreal - if you're down the other end, our takers have the sound of the away fans to worry about.

BoomXhakaLacaa

Jover and the rest of our set piece staff once again proving to be some of our most important people

DittoDat

I was in the North Bank, so it was at least a huge win for me lol

AyersRock_92

Also just noticed Raya dove same direction every time.

GloomyLocation1259

To add watching both our and Atleti shootouts it seems players who do a standard run up are more likely to miss. Have do a fancy / delayed run up to trick the keeper

Tr0nCatKTA

Watched this about a dozen times since Tuesday

same. thrown in a couple of watches with french commentary for the added emotion.

normott

Good to know I'm not alone in that

Riffliquer

Exactly! So many small things that stood out to me. One of them being how big Gabi right at the end there hi fives a steward (probably know each other too?) Just literally shows how close the club, staff and the fans are. Shows the togetherness and collective camaraderie we have now! Absolutely love it

I downloaded the game in 1080 and re-edited it and posted in original 1080 with a lower frame rate.

Was too nervous to watch it on the night. Just heard the commentary. Have watched it on repeat since

RedWeasel2000

Love the fuckery on their last kick, Raya gets the ball instead of Costa and making him reposition it by a few millimeters

Fumblepony

A couple of other little psychology things that people have pointed out: * Raya matches the walk in and walk back of the penalty takers * The entire team, presumably just to fuck with the Porto players, takes 3 big steps up from the halfway line

tcgtms

>* The entire team, presumably just to fuck with the Porto players, takes 3 big steps up from the halfway line I don't know why but this is hilarious to me. We are truly marginal gains fc and I'm all for it.

Cynicayke

That Porto team panicking when they realise they can't shithouse, waste time, or feign injury during penalties.

StKLynn

I might be looking too much into it but I really liked how odegaard conducted himself in the shootouts. -chose to kick out pens in front of the home crowd -went first in front of the queue as a captain -buries it -rallied and urged the crowd hard after he scored It's the little things but I can't help appreciate how he is captaining us rn.

AzracTheFirst

The first point was chosen randomly by coin. We were lucky in that.

CallumK7

tbf he could have chosen to be disadvantaged instead, credit where credit is due

AzracTheFirst

How exactly? The ref says heads this goal, tails the other goal. There's no choosing...

Aakashneel92

Ice in his veins Rice is his name.

Bessantj

It's beautiful lads, hang that in the Louvre.

lfshammu

Love Arteta basically telling all of Porto fuck off after the shootout. Didn't want to hear anything they had to say, just told them to get the hell off the pitch lmao

beefcroquette

This is our turf, our rules after all

Crookz_O

I feel a little for Costa there lol. I think he was trying to play peacemaker too but was the first person Arteta ran in to (post Conciencaoooo) and got the brunt of it.

s-e-x-m-a-c-h-i-n-e

I thought Raya’s right pinky was bleeding after saving those pens but it could have just been a red bandage. Well done to the lad. No matter how the pundits want to dissect this negatively, this is probably the best way to win. Why? Because it’s wins like this that build character and mature a side into beasts. Different type of game same old result, instil momentum and belief in your team and fear in the hearts of your opponents.

ReeceMallett17

Ally McCoist is such a nonsense merchant, just rambles all game like a drunk in a pub

PigletTraditional193

I was literally pulling my hair out all game with the nerves + refs calls + ally mcmoist’s fucking horrible takes

datguyakala

Lol, nonsense comment. Give me McCoist over anyone on sky, personally.

_ulinity

Well definitely over Neville. I honestly enjoy his nonsensical banter a lot more on most nights.

swiftwilly321

as a person who had to go on a flight just as this started thank you!

MozzerellaStix

Lol. Mine got delayed or I would have missed it too.

wafflesology

Saka & Rice penalty is literally screaming… “This is our home, not yours”

Cherbotsky

Couldn’t find a decent quality highlight anywhere thanks

CackleberryOmelettes

Great quality mate. And I really like the extended cut showing the whole thing instead of penalty after penalty.

OkDescription7373

What I love from this shootout is that we can see the team clearly prepared and practiced this a lot, raya who didnt have a good penalty record guess right 3 times, all the penalties were hit with power and composure. Compared to the sporting pens where we looked nervous, even the pens that went in didnt look assured at all

ramseysleftnut

The Scottish commentator was such an insufferable cunt. Just shut the fuck up. Made me actually want Steve Mcmanaman instead, that’s how bad he was.

rumham1441

He said to bring on Ramsdale for penalties even though he has never seen him on penalties….

Active_Bee_7937

Didn't he do the pens in the community shield match. I think we won that on pens

Ife2105

He didn’t save any though. KDB and Rodri’s pens were off target

Cleon189

No. He saved rodri’s.

Ife2105

I must’ve misremembered. My bad

Mubar06

Yeah

Predawndutchy

Oh my god is that why they were talking about Tim Krul? Becuase of the 2014 world cup? Jesus christ i thought they were joking.

Extra4yylmao

Nah they weren’t joking he was all like let me pose a hypothetical to all of you, would you sub ramsdale on? I was in disbelief at hearing that

lamb_passanda

That was the main commentator asking McCoist that question iirc.

Extra4yylmao

Still a pretty dumb question if you ask me lol

Turbo-Badger

He’s usually really good but atrocious that night. 90 mins of uninterrupted creaming over Porto.

CaptainFiasco

1) What exactly is he saying? "It's not a disaster if Arteta replaced Raya with Ramsdale because everyone already knows Raya is his #1 GK". What does it mean? He's not stating that Ramsdale is better at saving penalties. He's not suggesting that Arteta should replace Raya. 2) Ramsdale was the GK during Arsenal's most recent shootout before this. The Community Shield shootout. In that, Ramsdale saved one penalty (Rodri's). KdB missed, and Ramsdale actually dived to the wrong side. Ramsdale has 3 career penalty saves out of 26 (11.5%). Raya has 4 in 36 (11.1%). This is the Transfermarkt stats for both goalkeepers which took me 30 seconds to find out. Another 10 seconds to quickly check the percentage on my phone calculator. Ramsdale has no previous association with FC Porto (Like when Caballero did, with City, and therefore Sarri wanted to sub him in instead of Chelsea manager Kepa. I believe Caballero also had a better save percentage compared to Kepa) There's absolutely no data, even anecdotal, that would suggest Ramsdale is better at saving penalties compared to Raya. Therefore, it is very clear that McCoist is sticking to a script. His job as a commentator is to describe the match. But his real job is to create talking points. If Arsenal had lost the shootout then the networks will run with "Ramsdale should have been subbed in" for the entire interlull. It is so obvious.

RupertE

I believe McCoist said that Arteta had said that Ramsdale is better at penalties. I can't find the quote from Arteta and it doesn't sound like something he would say (comparing any two players).

CaptainFiasco

Did McCoist actually make that claim? I don't remember hearing it.

_ulinity

He didn't say anything about Arteta saying that, no.

RupertE

My mind might be playing tricks on me but I think it was around the 117th minute

astrojeet

He made it all up.

Tr0nCatKTA

Ally McCoist is a prick.

littlebrwnrobot

What was their douche of a coach wagging his finger in arteta’s face for?

bearwoodgoxers

Mikel asked him if they came to play or win, considering they did neither.

Crookz_O

Cussed out his family apparently.

TeddyWestsideThe2nd

Raya nearly saved that Grujic pen as well. Really good performance from him and from all of our boys that stepped up.

llllmaverickllll

Watch the amount of the goal that Raya covers on these pens....Even the first where he guesses the wrong way he's covering all the way to the post. The 2nd save he makes look like a joke when it's hitting side netting with power....He's just flying.

gonegoonergone

Inject into my veins

hipster_mnot

Move on up, indeed!

Fresh_Since92

I don’t know what was up with Ally McCoist’s commentary, weirdest takes all night. He’s usually good on Amazon Video

chewkachu

Disappointed there’s no front view angle for every goals Would have loved to see replays in that angle

[deleted]

The commentator at the break suggesting to sub Raya off for Ramsdale. Ramsdale being better at penalty saves. Any comments on this?

lduffyle

The more I watch the more I think the “plan” Raya referenced was to dive left for every penalty. His first step is always to his left and he fully commits to his dive, even on the first one. There isn’t any of the cross step, fake-you-out kinda stuff you often see from keepers. Raya also said he didn’t have to reference any charts taped to water bottles because he knew the “plan.” Telling him, “just dive left” seems simple enough to remember, doesn’t it?

rvalluri

Thanks OP. I followed this live in reddit at 5am in the morning. First time seeing this on replay in HD had made my week!

SackoVanzetti

Even in the walk up to the ref, costa looked like he was dreading this and Raya looked confident.

PoeticChelle

Why not watch it again, it's only the 30th time! 😍

Riffliquer

"Saved it .. David Raya's saved it" is going to have a special place in my memory.

Who would've been Arsenal's 5th shooter?

I'd guess Jesus?

Lovely, thanks for posting. Watched it live, and loved watching it again.

Eat shit you porto mugs

TheGhostOfPepeSilvia

Thank you! I had to listen to the entire game because I was at work and my fucking headphones died once the penalty kicks started. Literally nightmare material. This is the first time I've seen the unabridged version and it's just electric. I love everything about this.

It was at this moment, Conceicao decided Arteta had said something about his family.

Little late to the party, OP.
