Model kits mockups usually have high end finishes but with Bandai for a looooooong time they did a lot of after market mods like replacing the whole sword "blade" here.
OP makes a post asking how to make an opaque plastic saber translucent.
After clarification by replyers, they admit they asked this question because were confused by the picture in the manual. I can only assume they somehow thought the saber in the manual pic is translucent.
The manual shows a painted opaque saber. I bring it up in my reply, and you replied to.
And now here we are. Im confused about how OP was confused by the manual pic, and you apparantly confused about why I am confused.
you could probably get some clear rod to to replace the grey piece if you want it to be transparent.
The Dom's heat saber isn't supposed to be translucent if that's what you're worried about.
You are correct, some images it looks sorta transparent if active but that trnds to be how theyvlike tobmake glow heat weapons look for some reason lol
It's a superheated stick. The stick is actually made to he easily replaceable because it deforms with very few uses, but the weapon is effective and producing spares is cheap enough that it makes sense to use even with beam sabers available (the Sleeves equipped their Dreissens with heat sabers instead of the long beam tomahawk, and the Pezun Dwadge had a heat saber when it could easily power the Galbaldy Alpha's beam saber)
I wonder what method it's heated by? I always assumed it was electrical resistance, so the stick is basically a giant light bulb filament. Solid tungsten? Wow, that'd be expensive, unless they're finding giant tungsten deposits in the asteroid belt. Even then...
Yeah it's not venting, it's the same energy port that powers the beam saber except heating up the heat saber's blade instead of activating the I-field that contains the plasma
Yup! Zeon didn't start using beam weapons until later in the OYW. Their main rifle was a machine gun, their bazooka actually WAS a bazooka, etc. One of the reasons the RX-78 is so overpowered early on in Mobile Suit Gundam was its beam rifle and saber being effective compared to heat hawks and machine guns.
If you’re going for the classic anime look, it should be colored a dull yellow if stored on the back or a sharp almost white blue if the saber is in use. If you want to go for the realistic Unicorn/video game look, it would be grey while stored on the back and a glowing orange/yellow while in use. I think the manual is mimicking the bright blue from the classic anime and has some weird lighting that makes it seem see through but it’s not meant to be. Hope this helps!
Something i would suggest OP as I have built this kit a few times and almost always end up gluing the hands together as they can be quite fragile and shouldn't need tobbe disassembled to put weapons in them. I also recommend pinning the shoulder pegs for reinforcement as they can be a little fragile as well.
You can't with that weapon. Best thing I could tell you is to just paint the heat rod like its active and go from there. Same said for a Zaku's heat axe
I think you can get a clear plastic rod, cut off thr old one, and drill in the handle, then sand off a bit at the end of the plastic rod that’ll be connected into the handle to make it a bit smaller and glue it in the handle. Finish off by a coat of matt top coat over the platic rod, and voila, finish.
But the heat rod is not meant to be translucent. Not sure why they add it in there. If it’s activated, it should be red hot to yellow. Orange is also a nice color for that.
Lot of people said it, but even on the clear ones some white around the base and thin it out about halfway up and then go over it with a fluorescent color… you’ll like what you get.
No need! Just make it bean saber colored with some silver on it. Or straight up silver since most heat conducting metals look chrome looking before being heated up.
That clear rod looks like it was glued on after snipping off the old grey rod. You can see it in the sample image that there are some excess glue where the clear rod and the grey handle meet.
Still funny though that bandai didn’t even think of giving you an unmolded clear stick to use as your DOM stick
That's the neat part, you don't! Heat rods are meant to be like glowing metal. Try that instead.
Ooo I would love to see that executed well!
That's what I was going to try, but I was confused by this pic.
Bandai has come a long way for sure.
They tried to go for the just out of the fire hot metal look.
Model kits mockups usually have high end finishes but with Bandai for a looooooong time they did a lot of after market mods like replacing the whole sword "blade" here.
It's not translucent in the pic though.
Everyone understood the assignment cept you 😂
Then go ahead and explain what OP was confused about.
The saber? Lmao. There you go kiddo

You the only one confused here bud
I'm confused too. I see a pure white rod in the picture. Not sure how OP thought it was translucent. The other guy is just being an asshat.
you could probably get some clear rod to to replace the grey piece if you want it to be transparent. The Dom's heat saber isn't supposed to be translucent if that's what you're worried about.
Yea, I've seen them usually red orange and yellow. So everything about this picture has been confusing me
not familiar with the dom tropen but I assume the image is of a deactive heat saber. anyone more aware can correct me
You are correct, some images it looks sorta transparent if active but that trnds to be how theyvlike tobmake glow heat weapons look for some reason lol
It's probably a production shot using a placeholder part for the beam.
I painted mine gold and it’s dope
Technically not meant to be translucent, the heat rod is a blade, not a beam.
I was today years old when I learned this
It's a superheated stick.

It's directly through the MS's reactor through a port in the hand.
So probably electrical then. It's not like the reactor is venting straight into the saber, that'd be absurd
Yeah it's not venting, it's the same energy port that powers the beam saber except heating up the heat saber's blade instead of activating the I-field that contains the plasma
Honesty I’d say go with yellow over white if you still want to paint, most kit representations from what I’ve seen have a big ol’ banana blade.
Swing, swing, swing, swing, swing, swing, swing, banana blade
Where is that coming from???
NEEEEERDD! ^^(also ^cool ^didn't ^know ^that! ^Thanks!)
It's a rod
If you cut off the rod completely you could call it transparent
You don't, it's a heat rod.
If you’re going for the classic anime look, it should be colored a dull yellow if stored on the back or a sharp almost white blue if the saber is in use. Heat saber has a solid blade, not supposed to be translucent. Don't know what the manual is doing, doesn't it have a painting guide?
There is, but there isn't a color for the heat rod.
That's the fun bit, you don't
Thats the neat part, you don't.
Grab an eraser and erase the color
Plavsky particles
Since nobody is actually answering your question... A straw. You might be able to find something at the dollar store.
Hell yeah, keep one from the coffee shop. I have tons.
Something i would suggest OP as I have built this kit a few times and almost always end up gluing the hands together as they can be quite fragile and shouldn't need tobbe disassembled to put weapons in them. I also recommend pinning the shoulder pegs for reinforcement as they can be a little fragile as well.
I'll keep that in mind
You can't with that weapon. Best thing I could tell you is to just paint the heat rod like its active and go from there. Same said for a Zaku's heat axe
Iridescent paint?
Painting it white would be cool
If you really want it.. you could make a silicone mold, cast with smoothon 325 with a tiny bit of white pigment powder mixed in the part b, slowly
I think you can get a clear plastic rod, cut off thr old one, and drill in the handle, then sand off a bit at the end of the plastic rod that’ll be connected into the handle to make it a bit smaller and glue it in the handle. The Dom is equipped with a Heat Rod, it don't need to look clear, it needs to look really hot.
looks like they actually cut away the grey plastic and stuck on a white/translucent one.
It isn’t a translucent weapon, its a metal rod
I know it's a heat rod. That's not the question.
Op I just use a white gundam marker on mine.
You need to believe
You need to become superman.
Issa heat rod go ahead and put it over the fire and watch it turn colors.
An eraser or if you wanna get fancy, translucent paint
Looks like a hot glue gun stick
It really does. I was thinking a glow-stick
Which is why I'm so confused on how I'm supposed to replicate it
You may be able to use an old runner. Not sure what (if any) other kits have the same off-white translucency. Hopefully someone recognizes it
Just paint it clear
Wow, this guy doesnt know about translucent paint. Amirite guys?
Simply be just be better
Use a fluorescent paint and shine uv on it, it will make it look like shining energy blade, but it wont be translucent
The amount of comments for a help me😂 bro it’s white.. paint it white.. or not lol
Wht? what's the problem with holding a mega baton?
Reflective tape like they used in Star Wars episode 4 for the lightsabers
Lot of people said it, but even on the clear ones some white around the base and thin it out about halfway up and then go over it with a fluorescent color… you’ll like what you get.
No need! Just make it bean saber colored with some silver on it. Or straight up silver since most heat conducting metals look chrome looking before being heated up.
Why he sitting like that
Two separate pictures

Get some translucent paint and give it a thick coating
With translucent paint, duh.

That’s the neat part! You don’t.
Just get clear paint
Translucent? Looks like it was just painted white.
Not captured completely on the pic. But it looks like they stuck a hot glue gun stick on it
