Tim is not bad and he is just honest about where the deduction are going to come from so the audience can be a little educated on what to look for. Landings give away tenths and even casuals fans can understand it. His excitement for gymnastics is evident and he is very consistent with his commentary. I like the team of him and John and their banter.
tim is not that bad yall need to calm down and see that he has clear passion for the sport and commentating unlike many who they have tried to bring in through the years
could not agree more. I quite like Tim, and his enthusiasm was a big part of how I even got back into gymnastics. Consistency of voice truly helps with viewership. The current commentators all have strengths and weaknesses
Oh no I step away for an hour and suddenly Khoi is in trouble šš MAG you never fail to give me a heart attack. I think he _probably_ still makes it based on what Iām reading? I just hope he can still recover on Day 2 and hopefully rest that knee a little
So pleased for Frederick and Shane tho!!
Okay, first in-person elite meet recap:
1. When people say you can feel the environment in the arena, they mean it. I donāt totally know how things compare to other meets, but I felt a nervy energy personally. Iāve been to a few UMN gym meets and they were a lot more relaxed than this. Minnesota showed out for Shane, and you could definitely feel everyone was really rooting for Donnell.
2. Tomorrow, Iām bringing my earplugs! And my binoculars š (for those in the top bowl). I ended up heading home mid rotation 4 because I had a headache.
3. Check out the vendors outside if youāre interested! The Skippy booth has a photo option where they superimpose you onto a gym background of your choice. I got a free picture of me that looks like Iām standing in front of the uneven bars on the podium! Core hydration was giving out free water samples, the scrunchy, and stickers. The merch line took a long timeālook for the one by Target Field for a shorter wait. They also have Olympic rings you can get your photo in front of, and a Spieth low beam too.
Now to rest up emotionally for tomorrow, lol!
I was outside in the merch line for awhile at the beginning when one of the bands was playing and they were super loud. I think that just carried over because my head was totally pounding. But Sunday is probably going to be wild. So excited for tomorrow!
I really wonder if Steven may have mathematically clinched a spot? Barring the loophole someone posted where there may be two different highest scoring teams and even if Stephen is on both, he can potentially be left off. But considering the selection criteria, I do kind of agree with him playing it safe. Now he can throw whatever he wants the last day and still have three solid scores. Idk how I actually feel about him being on the team, but by the guidelines he's put himself in a very good position (also helped by others having major issues on pommels across multiple meets)
i believe he needs to contribute .5 more than the next highest scoring team. so maybe someone has the potential to score highly enough to average things out appropriately? but it does seem very unlikely.
I will never understand how these ladies run with their hair flowing like that. (Coming from a swimmer with a lot of hair.) it boggles my mind. (No, I havenāt turned the channel lol.)
You mean the adidas ones? I noticed those also. They are horrible! Idk if it is actually a thong or it is just designed to look like one but I donāt see the point either way.
Spencer posted Khoi dropped off the highest scoring team, replaced with Shane or Juda. Stephen still in it (which makes sense compared to everyone else's pommels)
He posted it on BBS: [https://balancebeamsituation.com/2024/06/27/2024-trials-live-blog-mens-day-1/](https://balancebeamsituation.com/2024/06/27/2024-trials-live-blog-mens-day-1/)
from spencer: Averaging nationals and trials so far, Khoi Young is dropped off the highest-scoring team, replaced by Wiskus or Juda in a tie. Nedoroscik is still in there because no one else has scores.
Iām new to menās, mostly a womenās fan, but enjoyed watching today so Iām curious! Iām wondering what is holding back Asher Hong from being in the highest scoring team above Juda or Wiskus? Thanks for the help and explanations for this newbie :)
Asher had a disastrous nationals - he ended up 10th. They use scores from both nationals and trials to decide the team, so he has a big hole to climb out of.
My wife and I did some quick work - if you JUST take Day 1 results - top scoring team by .05 is Brody, Fred, Shane, Paul and Yul. This doesn't take into consideration people scoring better JUST what they scored today
Especially since other countries, who USA will be directly competing with for medals, have pommels guys who will likely be scoring in the 15s. GB with Max, Ukraine with Illia and Oleg, China with Zou Jingyuan, etc etc.
That's not even getting into Stephen's chances of entering the pommels EF if he puts up a mid 14 in qualifications.
Yes, the US can't afford the luxury to bring one event specialist who purposefully downgrade in both QF and TF. If he downgrades at the last minute in the last one or two rotation to secure a team medal, like Daiki always did on HB, I can understand that. But someone who could contribute on multiple events would have added more (with a lower risk) when the goal of specialist is to intentionally downgrade in the first few rotations...
I wish he was the male version of Madison Kocian where we knew we could put him up on any event as a backup if necessary. But if makes it and no one else bumps him out, I'll be hoping he kills it in Paris.
Madison Kocian is different because she wonāt drop below 15.5 (a medal score). Pommer Horse is like beam. Everyone has a chance to mess up. Khoi could score 15, but he received 11 today. Stephen also received 12-13 in 2022 team final.
I will say he has been doing his best this year to overcome that reputation. He's scored in the low-mid 15s internationally and at Nationals one day (these are scores which will contend for the apparatus gold medal), and hasn't dropped below a mid-high 14 otherwise (a "low" score for a specialist but still really handy for a team).
Even if he does, he is likely to make it. He will drop his lowest score. I know they made a big deal about his score today, but mid 14s on pommel is still an excellent score, especially comparatively.
I know, but taking one event specialist is still a very risky move. Like Khoi, Stephen can reach 15, but he can also go 12-13ā¦ it happened in 2022 team final.
Oh, I definitely agree. However, per the selection protocol, he seems to be in a place where he potentially can't be left off the team. They tried to make the selection process very clear, but it's left them in a position where Steven is on all variations of highest scoring team.
Crazy first night. I'm the most concerned for Khoi (that knee definitely seems to be holding him back) and Pommel Horse in general (every miss made me think about the Team Final in Paris and not in a good wayš)
Shaneās stock probably rose the most tonight followed by Stephen and then Asher, all unclear though on making the team
Brody and Frederick stayed the same as safely on the team
Yul may have gone down slightly, but prob still on
Paul stayed the same but still prob still an alternate
Khoi down a lot but could improve, has best history
Curran and Colt prob off still
Donnell stock down but could possibly improve
Well this is going to be interesting. After Nationals I was assuming Brody, Frederick, Khoi, and Yul with one spot open, pretty much. With both Khoi and Yul having falls on pommels, though, I'm definitely curious to see what happens Saturday. Khoi was great on vault, and Yul looked good on P-Bars, but. Shane and Paul were both great tonight. And I'm going to believe in Donnell to show up Saturday (he can afford to drop his scores tonight, he was greatt on relevant events at nationals)
I think Stephen went up given how messy most of the guys were on Pommels today. His score today wasn't great for him but it's still very usable in a team final.
Iām just curious if his score will mathematically lock him into a spot, because I donāt see the committee taking a one event specialist who isnāt putting up scores to medal if they donāt have to
I know that the men have one automatic spot if the top AAer is also in the top three on three events. What do they do about vault - is it top three of single vault scores?
After reading it, Iām not sure it would even work for him. It says you need to show readiness by July 1, which is only 4 days from now. I donāt really see how him sitting out would make patellar tendinitis get better in only a 4 day span
Well, couldnāt you argue day 1 showed readiness though? Itās a chronic injury so idk might be treated differently but you could be right. I also mentally was thinking July was a week away but honestly, that is still very soon.
I mean he totally flopped day 1 so I would definitely say he did not show readiness based on day 1
Edit: in my eyes readiness is an ability to be on the team, not simply a readiness to compete. Not sure what the committee views as āreadinessā though
Do the men have a procedure to petition on to the team? I think if he were to pull out now the team could end up automatically selected without him on it.
It looks like Khoi would have to be able to do a show of readiness (routines with full difficulty) by July 2nd at the LATEST in order for his petition to be accepted. That's only 5 days. So Khoi's injury doesn't seem like the kind of thing the petition would work for.
wow! I had never added it all up or even thought about it. Do they really do 10 skills on high bar? I had heard the 10 skill thing before, but didn't think about it being all events.
Yes, at least 10 skills on each event (well except vault). Sometimes, they count some A/B skills except for parallel bar. That's why a 15+ parallel bar is more common than other apparatus. It's the only apparatus that can reach 16+.
Honestly, the additional criteria will probably come into play. I donāt see how the different team scenarios arenāt 2+ points apart after tonight š
pain. i feel so terrible for khoi. i also just think it would be really fucking cool to have two black men on the team (maybe three?). when's the last time that happened, like 1996?
So Brody and Frederick are pretty much locks at this point. Then pick three of Khoi, Yul, Donnell, Shane, Paul, Asher, Stephen?
^(Edited bc I forgot that he asked to be called Frederick)
Donnell has exhibited his patented mental flop. I think he is out. Edit: And I don't think Stephen is on the team with lower difficulty. If he's not a medal contender (which he is not with that score) he is not going to make it.
How the team is selected Donnell is still in it if he hits night two because nationals was very clean for him. They look at the best three of four scores so anybody with more than one bad night on an event is in trouble. Trials isnāt worth more than nationals for men
I agree that it wouldnāt make sense to pick him for the team, but if he has a good day Saturday I think he could still end up automatically selected. But maybe not idk I havenāt looked at the numbers.
Fredrick and Brody in the lead! And Shane at #3! Shane is the most surprising. What do teams look like if he makes it?! (Also hoping Suni gets the same home crowd boost he has š)
Shane did awesome, definitely a contender for the team now especially with the struggles from Khoi and Donnell. Asher did well but I think he has a big road ahead, has to hit day 2 as well to have a shot considering his Nationals
I didnāt comment before in fear of jinxingā¦ but go Frederick!! So happy to see him do well.
Still holding out hope for Khoi, Yul, and Donnell but thatās going to come down to the wire.
I have to say I like Khoiās mind set , he is not falling apart.I was thinking about his momās reaction her hand on her head . Like itās in your mind
\*\*\*\* Can someone quickly calculate who is currently on track to make the team? I'm dying to know. Probably helpful to run it twice, once with all scores, and once with top 2/3 \*\*\*\*
Interestingly, even if Asher somehow came in first, I donāt think heād get the automatic berth. (I know heās not first anyway but had a chuckle when I remembered the rule.)
First as in first place?
But yes, you have to end Trials in first as well as top 3 on 3 events right? I think that could only happen if several people flub on floor at this point
Yea thatās my hope. I think. There is one clause that says any highest scoring team scenarios that donāt include the auto qualifier will be discarded.
I guess thereās no way that scenario would come into play anyway with Brody or Frederick in the spot.
He seems to be working under the assumption, both of them are a given. During nationals he said he only expected Fred to keep getting better, so he has been complimentary to both. I expected the same. It wouldn't surprise me if Fred qualifies for the automatic spot. It will be interesting to see how much risk the two of them take on night two.
Thatās correct, itās just his clear favoritism towards Brody thatās frustrating because the way he talks about the two of them is not entirely the same but they are very much evenly matched.
Iād love that! But then, heād probably just start rambling anyway saying, āWell, we actually know TWO team members now because no way theyāre leaving Brody Malone off this team!ā
Did anyone work out how to watch MAG trials outside of the US? Asking for research purposes and nothing else xxx

Shane and Paul's stocks went way up. Khoi needs to have an AMAZING night 2 to come back from this (which I truly hope he does).
Does anyone know when they typically upload the replay on peacock? I couldnāt watch live :(
It's available already for me! Generally it takes an hour or so
Came here to ask the same thing
Up now! I was there live but want to see some of the broadcast
Same. I donāt see it on mine though

The 0.5 thing would only apply if another non-all-arounder was on the highest scoring team (e.g. Curran).
yea, as the other person said, it's a full 2 points but it only applies if they had 2 specialists, not just one
That is only if bringing a specialist means they can only put up 3 in quals (which I believe wouldnāt be the case) according to neutral deductions
I will never understand how these ladies run with their hair flowing like that. (Coming from a swimmer with a lot of hair.) it boggles my mind. (No, I havenāt turned the channel lol.)
Ok help me understand those 200m track uniforms that look like a thong one piece swimsuit over shorts?
You mean the adidas ones? I noticed those also. They are horrible! Idk if it is actually a thong or it is just designed to look like one but I donāt see the point either way.
Yesātheyāre AWFUL
They surely use anti chafing stuff between their legs. That has to be painful without it.
Funnily enough, the swimmers are more covered š
Chat, idk if I can take Courtney tulloch and Donnell not going to Paris.

Ummmm I pray that Stephen will not bring a 12-13 in team final. Heās kinda almost locked if heās consistently in the highest scoring team.
If heās on the team I kinda hope he does an easier / more consistent routine in TF like he did today.
I think if he's selected, he's expected to go for a fairly difficult routine in TF which helps lock his spot for one event, not just playing it safe.
Especially since other countries, who USA will be directly competing with for medals, have pommels guys who will likely be scoring in the 15s. I was wondering the same thing.
no you have to have 2 vaults!
I feel like Khoi should pull out with injury and petition.
I wish they allow that like the Japanese selection for Daiki.
Can the men petition for injury? I know for WAG you cannot petition for injury
According to this, yes: https://static.usagym.org/PDFs/Pressbox/Selection%20Procedures/m_24olympics.pdf

Itās not letting me copy and paste from the PDF. iPhone problems idk. Youāll have to scroll to 1.4.3.c
thank you! Super interesting. The menās procedures really have everything laid out clearly
tbh i think he should have done that after vault today. he was never quite right after that
Agree.
What happened to Khoi? Did he fall?
Yeah, he fell twice on pommel horse.
Nooooo! Thank you š
Fred is top 3 on 3 events!
Why does menās gymnastics look so exhausting???
They have 6 events and do 10 counting skills in each event. It will change to 8 counting skills thankfully next year.
Womenās is 8, right? So men have a minimum of 51 skills (5x10 plus vault) and women have a minimum of 25 (3x8 + 1).
wow! I had never added it all up or even thought about it. Do they really do 10 skills on high bar? I had heard the 10 skill thing before, but didn't think about it being all events.
Yes but only 5 can be releases. Generally they count multiple C or B skills, because it's very hard to build up a routine with 10 counting skills.
Yes, at least 10 skills on each event (well except vault). Sometimes, they count some A/B skills except for parallel bar. That's why a 15+ parallel bar is more common than other apparatus. It's the only apparatus that can reach 16+.
Yes, and thatās demanding for AAers in MAG.
Because 6 events in a row is A LOT.
Switching to track & field trials to hopefully cheer myself up š
Do they have live chat lol
Per r/trackandfield it looks like they have a discord channel for live chat
I love these hot pink cleats
I have been a secret shane stan and now I am a PROUD SHANE STANĀ
Why does Shane Wiskus get no love? He did well today
He got a hell of a lot of love in the arena.
Iām glad. They didnāt hype him up enough on peacockās main stream for my liking.
The whole arena exploded for him after everything he didāheās a local MN guy so he enjoyed all the hometown vibes!
Shane is loved!
I like his clean international look.
Iām SO rooting for both Shane AND Suni to make the team in front of their home crowds!!!
No heās loved!
I love him!! Heās been my fave since last Olympics
He did amazing. Steady and clean
People were going crazy for him in the Target Center today!
This meet drained me but I feel like I should watch the first part of the debate
I wouldn't. At least here you can mute the nonsense (aka Tim) and still know what's going on.
I think that would drain you even more
new drinking game: drink whenever one of them says something incoherent you'll be unconscious within minutes

Someone please do the math and let me know if Khoi's vault alone is enough for him to make it š
I feel so bad for him, but unfortunately everyone elseās vault scores are decently high and hitting, that itās not as helpful for Khoi š„
I miss Chainey Umphrey. He was my fave in MAG back in the day!
This !!! I really got big on MAG because of them at World last year
Same! And clearly becoming more diverse has significantly helped the women.
anyway see yall tomorrow for the women
So Brody and Frederick are pretty much locks at this point. Then pick three of Khoi, Yul, Donnell, Shane, Paul, Asher, Stephen? ^(Edited bc I forgot that he asked to be called Frederick)
Just FYI, he wants to be called Frederick, not Fred.
Trials isnāt worth more than nationals for men
I know. I'm saying that I think Donnell is out because mentally, he can never seem to compose himself once the mistakes start rolling in.
Heās done a ton of work on his mental game based on interviews heās given, letās give him a chance.
I love Donnell. I was rooting for him. I'm being honest though. I'm not optimistic but will be happy to eat my words.
It's only night 1, and he's been working on his mental space during these meets! We don't need to write him off just yet!
I am sorry. I do love Donnell. I'm just not optimistic. I will be so happy to be wrong though!
I agree that it wouldnāt make sense to pick him for the team, but if he has a good day Saturday I think he could still end up automatically selected. But maybe not idk I havenāt looked at the numbers.
I agree. He's out.
Patented mental flop š„ŗš„ŗš„ŗ
Fredrick and Brody in the lead! And Shane at #3! Shane is the most surprising. What do teams look like if he makes it?! (Also hoping Suni gets the same home crowd boost he has š)
Frederic * in first
I already changed it even before your comment. Iām sorry ā¤ļøā¤ļø
Shane did awesome, definitely a contender for the team now especially with the struggles from Khoi and Donnell. Asher did well but I think he has a big road ahead, has to hit day 2 as well to have a shot considering his Nationals
This was fun see yāall tomorrow night š„°
I didnāt comment before in fear of jinxingā¦ but go Frederick!! So happy to see him do well. Still holding out hope for Khoi, Yul, and Donnell but thatās going to come down to the wire.
Yul's still in it. He is #6. Khoi, I'm worried about. The kneee looks like it is hurting him badly.
Wait someone educate me could Shane beat out Khoi??
According to BBS the best scoring team would now leave off Khoi and instead Shane and Paul are tied for that last spot.
Wowwww
Shane is riding the hometown crowd and willing his way onto this team and Iām here for it.
Frederick in 1st! Paul did good. Yul did okay to better. Poor Khoi...
Yayyy Frederick in 1st for AA!
Is Shane-Juda-Cameron the Chiles-Kayla-Leanne of MAG?
As in very good all arounders but just too alternate coded
Time to go either watch Phineas and Ferb or more Bridgerton.
Shane being in third!!!! Lets GOOOOOOOOOO
Frederick finishes first day 1!!!
Fredrick!!!!
I have to say I like Khoiās mind set , he is not falling apart.I was thinking about his momās reaction her hand on her head . Like itās in your mind
HELL YEAH 14.7 Fred on FX
Frederick and Juda GO BLUE
šš
Wow, huge score for Fredrick!
Frederick wins!!!!!
the one bright spot of the meet!
aww why did khoiās āhi everyoneā remind me of spiderman
Khoi actually just always reminds me of Spider-man in general. Heād be a great live action stunt show Spider-man.

Yea, I was keyed in on it when he was momentarily in first š
If all goes well on Saturday it'll go to Fred!
Yea thatās my hope. I think. There is one clause that says any highest scoring team scenarios that donāt include the auto qualifier will be discarded. I guess thereās no way that scenario would come into play anyway with Brody or Frederick in the spot.
Especially with both their strengths being high bar lol
I really like Frederick
Frederick is such an ambassador for his sport. I love it.
Glad Yul turned it arpund
Me too!
Ik the math will decide regardless but I also feel like itās a mistake not to bring Khoi (assuming his injury can improve in a month)
I think it would be a mistake as well but I don't know if they built any leeway into the rules.
He did get top score on vault tonight!
Fredās floor is my fav and in person is just crazy! The height is insane. Plus heās just such an entertaining person.Ā
Fred slayed FX and hype from the crowd, proud of him
Give me Frederick at the Olympics!!!!
Donnell report: made it through pommels. A bit of a struggle on the dismount, but got it up and held on. And, you know, it's Donnell on pommels.
Thanks!
We stan Donnell in my house.
his arms are so big i'm amazed he can even do pommels in the first place
Apparently its his favorite event!
Yeah we are not looking for perfect a hit is fine for him there
Whew I havenāt made myself listen to Tim for this long in a while.
Frederick is probably the all around champ tonight!
I hope Fred beats Brody for the automatic spot just so Tim shuts tf up
He seems to be working under the assumption, both of them are a given.
Me too! LOL!
Iād love that! But then, heād probably just start rambling anyway saying, āWell, we actually know TWO team members now because no way theyāre leaving Brody Malone off this team!ā
Big mood
