I saw her family at classics. They had a big entourage with t-shirts and all that. On the one hand, I think it’s great to have supportive family. But on the other hand, there was something that made me really uncomfortable about the way her dad was pushing her out there as a kind of spectacle everywhere they went. None of the other families acted like that there that I saw. Definitely got some narcissistic vibes from him, and the clown quote pretty much confirms that for me.
My mom doesn't really watch gymnastics that often, but felt like joining my sister and I (adults in our 40s) for some bonding time. She knows Simone through osmosis of being alive in the US and she knows Suni because we live in Minnesota, but everyone else is a mystery to her. She watched and paid attention, but she mostly seemed not sure of when she was supposed to be impressed.
Until Simone led off her floor with the Biles II.
She let out an audible "Holy shit" and followed it with "No one else has done *that*."

I love that your mom knows what the YDP is -- my mom's YDP reaction was similar to most of reactions she had whenever my sister and I were audibly impressed with something.

She watched more in the Nadia era before I got her back into it so she at least knows one flip in the air is the norm, so seeing Simone do two flips blows her mind every time lol
As somebody who sees so much negativity every day (IRL and on the internet), this is so refreshing. I love that your mom finds something positive to say about each gymnast, even those she doesn't know at all!
