That's the neat part you don't - unless you want to have very damaged hair, red is tough to come off

Nikki_Kvip

My last colorist used a new color remover on me that was clay based. Sorry I can't remember the name but that might help. But it got multiple applications of purple off my hair and left it practically white (ofc it had been bleached before that so just getting down to the bleached base) a little rough on my hair but if you didn't bleach before the red you don't have the base damage I did...

[deleted]

oh that’s great!! i’ve tried a colour remover before when i accidentally dyed my hair pink right before school started, and it turned it a salmon ish colour before washing/fading out. i might try a very light remover and see what it does :) i was a bit scared to do it on my hair because i’ve redyed it with permanent dye multiple times 😭

Lynnizian

I've tried color removing with vitamin c and it lightened the level 6 brownish red demi permanent I put over my bleached blonde highlights. I used [this](https://www.sallybeauty.com/hair-color/other-products-and-applications/hair-color-removers-and-correctors/hair-color-remover/SBS-405008.html) so it wouldn't be as damaging to my hair. You can't leave it on too long or over process your hair so I gave it a shot. It didn't lighten it ALL the way like bleach would of, but it is a shade lighter. I also have been using a clarifying shampoo, like every other wash, with hot water and that also helps.

IndustryAlarming2229

you could get some suave shampoo or any kind of clarifying shampoo and wash it a lot and in hot water.

Mundane-Studio-8934

Purple is one of the easiest colors to get out and the reason it was white is cause of color theory

lilbishhhhh

Definitely use a color remover first, using bleach will just push the color deeper into the cuticle resulting in a brighter red or pink color, Malibu cpr color remover is very good, red is the quickest to fade but one of the hardest colors to get rid of unfortunately, try doing the cpr treatment then waiting 2 weeks and doing it again, mix in some conditioning treatments as well

[deleted]

thank you so much for this advice and the advice about the bleach, i didn’t know the hair had cuticle at all!

OwlEastSage

color oops does real good on red, itll stink tho, use it twice

Big_Art1315

Definitely color remover before even considering bleach. Keep in mind, color remover like Color Oops reallllllly opens the cuticle, so do not bleach or dye or do anything after using color remover for at least a week. Read the directions well and really scrub. It will continue to fade and oxidize over a few days, so right after it will look more red that it really is. Typically it leaves my hair feeling very soft, but that’s just me. Smells bad. If it helps, I love the red.

[deleted]

thank you for this! im really happy that colour remover has some positive experiences, it brings my confidence back a lot. and thank you for the compliment about the red that really means a lot :)

Shortcake020

Girl I hardly have advice other than maybe a patch test at a salon to see what a piece would bleach too. But if I had to guess, it’ll bleach to orange. However they are professionals! They’ll tell ya. But just know I feel your pain. I dyed my hair bright red twice without bleaching it and iv tried to wait for it to fade and dyed it dark brown almost black twice, once at home once at a salon, and I STILL, have red highlight strands. Red stains. 🥲

LovelyLittlePigeon

When I wanted to get hot pink out of my bleached blond hair, here's what I did I went to the dollar tree and bought shampoo for dandruff (like head and shoulders) that's dye free and vitamin C tablets. Crush up like 20ish vitamin C tablets to make a powder. Mix it with the shampoo. Apply it to your hair and let it sit for around 45 minutes- more or less, you know your hair best. Put a plastic bag or shower cap over it to keep it moist. Then rinse. It should lighten it up. You can do this again, but I'd do a deep conditioning first. Sorry I don't have exact proportion, it's been a while. What brand dye did you use?

fungiforest

Seconding the vitamin C + dandruff shampoo, that’s always my go to when removing hair color

[deleted]

thank you for going into so much detail! any advice helps thank you so much. i used schwarzkopf permanent box dye :)

LovelyLittlePigeon

Happy to help! I haven't tried that brand, so I can't say for sure how this'll work. But hopefully it helps!

I suggest using a proper colour remover, I prefer L'Oréal Effasol; it lifted the green stains that even two rounds of bleach would not get out, after dying my hair blue. However be wary of slight dryness or extra damage Afterwards, try some colour correction if there's any colour left using green to tone down the red for example.

[deleted]

thank you! i’ve heard a lot about colour correction, i’ll take my time looking into it :)

meems133

You don’t wanna know. I just did something similar. It took LOTS of bleach, lots of time and patience and lots of toner.

Big_Stretch3684

Just a word of warning…I tried to bleach my red dyed short pixie and it went BRIGHT orange. I ended up buzzing it off 😵‍💫

[deleted]

this was something i was terrified of, it’s one of the main reasons i’ve avoided putting anything on it so my hair doesn’t turn a colour i’ll regret even more 😅 i bet your hair looks great now though!

Ok_Film_8437

I have naturally very dark hair, used loreal hi lift red for a few months (dying the whole mess each time-dumb), then I used a color remover, followed by cream bleach with a 20 developer. Got to a bright yellow blonde, toned with t14. There's still a pretty strawberry at the ends that doesn't quite match the roots, but I don't feel embarrassed with the result. The color remover really did a lot to remove the red, but I don't know if it was *necessary* as I am not a professional, just some schmuck who watched too many brad mondo videos.

[deleted]

thank you for this!! im considering a colour remover even if it doesn’t fully get the colour out at least it helps it fade more :-) i was looking into brad mondo and his videos made me SO nervous to touch my hair 😭 i love him though

Ok_Film_8437

I watch his videos while I'm doing my hair. It makes me feel better when it doesn't come out perfect. At least it's not fail video worthy 😆

simps4youu

My first thought is to neutralize it with green dye. This will turn your hair more brown. Then strip it with color remover. If you don’t neutralize first, color remover will turn your hair pink!

Mystical_Moon0726

You wait for it to grow and keep getting it trimmed till the red is all gone. Your not going to get that out without damaging your hair a lot.

Traditional_Tea_5683

There's this stuff called stripper for dyed hair it's going to take you a while if u don't want to fry it but that would tone it down to a pretty color I betcha

Ok-Zucchini7301

You could use head and shoulders/dandruff shampoo, it helps alot of people fade the colour out.... Unfortunately it does leave your hair dry, but I believe it is far better than bleach because bleach actually ruins your hair... And as long as you upkeep your hair, I think it'll be fine if you just have it dried out instead of damaged by bleach You could also try to tone it, to get rid of the copper tones of the red...

metaphoricmoose

Bleach would be needed for that. You could try a colour remover but I doubt it would remove it all

becabaro

You have to bleach it, there’s no way around it

[deleted]

note: i have been redyeing it!! i probably re-dyed in 3-4 month intervals?

No-Fan8297

I just went red to blonde. I went to a salon, was there for a very long time and paid mega dollar.

[deleted]

I think the red looks best :)

NadiaB717

I don’t think you should go back to blond. The red looks better.

[deleted]

i do definitely think it suits me better, im just a little bored of it i think or i would’ve kept red forever lolol

AlikhanAli321

How it decides without face ?

No_Market_6620

Bleach bath it with 40vol, then once it’s all out. Apply a little amount of blue and grey into your new blond dye. And you’re good to go

Apprehensive-Fix-546

Ex-hairdresser here 18 plus years. OP, do NOT use 40 vol.

Chareste17

40vol bleach bath sounds like a recipe for chemical breakage 😭

[deleted]

i thought that too, isn’t 40vol one of the strongest?

No_Market_6620

It’s the strongest. But making it a bleach bath lowers the intensity to 30vol. It’s still really aggressive though. So be careful
