In your game’s folder there is a file called chapterbackgrounds.txt (steamapps >
common > Half-Life 2 >
hl2 > scripts). Go ahead and change “background02”, “background03” etc to whatever you want (numbers from 1 to 15 on the left mean that in this specific chapter your background will be set to the respective “background0x” (x is a number from 1 to 7)). Judging by the description, you might wanna rename them all to “background01”.
Turns out my old half life files break down finally paid off lmao, OP please tell me if this worked cuz I couldn’t get it to work on pretty heavily modded MMod 2 years ago or so, but still I believe it should work on unmodified vanilla
Edit: okay just checked it works perfectly, the reason it wasn’t working for me back then is due to my sv_unlockedchapters being 15, which wouldn’t be the case for you, OP. Just do everything described in the first paragraph and do not worry about what is written in the edit. It will 100% work.
Well you mentioned it in the first place, and I thought I would correct what you said because Half-Life 1 doesn't have dynamic backgrounds. Also Half-Life 1 and Half-Life: Source definitely aren't the same game. I mean, HL:S is an engine port of the original game, so they're almost the same, but HL:S is just so much worse because of the bugs, and the only reason to get is to get HL1 assets to Gmod.
I think it shows your recently played location.

You can't
The menu backgrounds change based on your most recent saved game. There's one for every chapter. The first half life did the same thing.
Half-Life 1 doesn't do that. I think you are mistaken with Half-Life: Source.
Your prolly right, but I didn't specifically say half life source. I don't think that's relevant to the op question.
But you said "the first Half-Life did the same thing" and Half-Life 1 only has one static image as the background.
Both half life one and half life source are the same game, why does this matter? Again not relevant

Feel good?
Yeah?
hl!s is not the same game, it’s a \*\*\*\*ty remaster of the same game.
You can technically make it so that one specific background shows all the time, but it's not that simple.
It changes based on which chapter your most recent save is on.
