What I wrote was that back in the 50-80s, employees would simply commute by car and take an elevator down to their job site, then go home at the end of the day.
When Caroline took over and commissioned the modern Enrichment Center, an absolutely massive and convoluted facility was constructed above Old Aperture.
Due to the maze-like layout of the Enrichment Center and it's sheer size, Aperture employees would often live full-time deep in the bowels of Aperture, as going to and from their work site took several hours.
One member of a family would essentially sacrifice themselves by working at Aperture, in exchange for sending back the money they make, only able to leave the facility a few times a year to visit their families.
The pay would be worth it for some people.
For example, one parent would banish themselves to Aperture while the other parent could be stay-at-home and spend more time with the kids
maybe being dematerialized will be less painful, because it will probably destroy your nerves before you can feel the pain. kinda like third degree burns

People suggesting that the only option from Aperture is a painless death from deadly neurotoxin must be unaware of the many dumb ways to die:
Get crushed by a crusher, destroy vital apparatus, find a way into Android Hell, run too fast on a pool of propulsion gel.
Play hide&seek with a turret, stand in front on an energy pellet, push your friend into toxic waste, shoot a portal straight in to outer space.
Rub your face on a hard light bridge, Forget your boots and fall off of the edge, suffocate in toxic gas, look at the operational end of the device.
Fall out of a test chamber, get thrown down an incinerator, consume a lot of bouncy goo, "I wonder what's this red button do?"
Donate one or more of your vital organs, fall into a pool of deadly toxins, go into cryosleep when there's no more power, get put into a potato and get eaten by a crow, stand around a platform heading towards fire, wait around for Half Life 3.
They're the dumbest ways to die.
In half life, they act like martial arts don't exist. See Dr. Coomer for a bad example of that, see any running or cowering scientist for a great example at that I would beat up as many zombies as I can't end up avoiding (and protect my head) until I find a gun from then it would all fall to situational awareness but with my aim the only thing I need fear is getting sniped by the HECU, or killed by one of many hazardous machines in the complex. If I'm lucky, I'll end up like Barney. If not, I'll make it count like Emile did on Reach, but that's another story.

Black Mesa. At least I died either in a fire fight for my life against highly trained soldiers, or I was killed by something cool like a grunt or vortigaunt. Sounds way better than dying from neurotoxin. Fully conscious as all the muscles and nervous system in your body is practically on fire and your mind essentially frying and falling apart and you get to experience all of it to the last breath.
At Aperture you'd have to work up the courage to make whatever mistake you're about to die from, whereas at Black Mesa a creature from Xen could just appear out of nowhere, scare the shit out of you, and kill you rather quickly. Or a Marine could just fill you with lead. etc etc. I think I'd rather die at Black Mesa. Even if you survive there long enough there is assurance of a nuke going off, and that's pretty quick I'd imagine. I wouldn't want my final moment to be "Fuck, I'm an idiot!" which it would most assuredly be at Aperture. At Black Mesa it would be more like "Oh, shit! AAAAAAH!" or "No no no no!" or possibly even "Die mother fucker!" (if I had a chance to shoot whatever kills me). All those are way better ways to die than trying to contemplate how to solve a puzzle and dying from my own stupidity.
Aperture, I would prefer to die from neurotoxins and be turned into a personality core rather than turning into and alien zombie in a painful way and then being beaten up by a guy with glasses and a crowbar

People suggesting that the only option from Aperture is a painless death from deadly neurotoxin must be unaware of the many dumb ways to die: Get crushed by a crusher, destroy vital apparatus, find a way into Android Hell, run too fast on a pool of propulsion gel. Play hide&seek with a turret, stand in front on an energy pellet, push your friend into toxic waste, shoot a portal straight in to outer space. Rub your face on a hard light bridge, Forget your boots and fall off of the edge, suffocate in toxic gas, look at the operational end of the device. Fall out of a test chamber, get thrown down an incinerator, consume a lot of bouncy goo, "I wonder what's this red button do?" Donate one or more of your vital organs, fall into a pool of deadly toxins, go into cryosleep when there's no more power, get put into a potato and get eaten by a crow, stand around a platform heading towards fire, wait around for Half Life 3. They're the dumbest ways to die.
Why does nobody talk about headcrabs, I would rather get gassed to death than get turned into a zombie while (possibly) still being conscious any day.

In half life, they act like martial arts don't exist. See Dr. Coomer for a bad example of that, see any running or cowering scientist for a great example at that I would beat up as many zombies as I can't end up avoiding (and protect my head) until I find a gun from then it would all fall to situational awareness but with my aim the only thing I need fear is getting sniped by the HECU, or killed by one of many hazardous machines in the complex. If I'm lucky, I'll end up like Barney. If not, I'll make it count like Emile did on Reach, but that's another story.
Aliens popping out of nowhere while I hold out in the cafeteria with a pistol and my wits? Or die screaming, choking on my own fluids from neurotoxin. Neither are ideal, but one will at least get me into Valhalla.

Black Mesa. At least I died either in a fire fight for my life against highly trained soldiers, or I was killed by something cool like a grunt or vortigaunt. Sounds way better than dying from neurotoxin. Fully conscious as all the muscles and nervous system in your body is practically on fire and your mind essentially frying and falling apart and you get to experience all of it to the last breath.

At Aperture you'd have to work up the courage to make whatever mistake you're about to die from, whereas at Black Mesa a creature from Xen could just appear out of nowhere, scare the shit out of you, and kill you rather quickly. Or a Marine could just fill you with lead. etc etc. I think I'd rather die at Black Mesa. Even if you survive there long enough there is assurance of a nuke going off, and that's pretty quick I'd imagine. I wouldn't want my final moment to be "Fuck, I'm an idiot!" which it would most assuredly be at Aperture. At Black Mesa it would be more like "Oh, shit! AAAAAAH!" or "No no no no!" or possibly even "Die mother fucker!" (if I had a chance to shoot whatever kills me). All those are way better ways to die than trying to contemplate how to solve a puzzle and dying from my own stupidity.
