Harvest is the first time a modern human population as a whole encounters an intelligent living alien being

[deleted]

But Reach had wildlife, which counts as non intelligent alien life.

RightfulChaos

Which is why I specified intelligent. Humanity has encountered plenty of alien animals.

NBAshitpostalt

I won’t tolerate this Guta slander

LoreCriticizer

If they're so smart, why don't they fight back when I shoot them?

SomeRepresentative23

I promise, shoot at the gutas, they’ll fight back. Moas are a different story.

LoreCriticizer

Oh wait I got the two mixed up. Well if they're so smart why couldn't they climb up the small rock that we use to cheese them with?

Mysterious_Might8875

Man I could go for a Moa burger rn

AgallochFanDeerDick

I don't know if humanity discovered any Forerunner stuff before the war, but if not, probably when Halsey observed High Charity

EternalCanadian

Humanity discovered Forerunner ruins on Onyx in 2491, and there were Forerunner ruins on Sigma Octanus and New Carthage that were also found, almost certainly before first contact, as some of the Sigma Octanus stuff was housed in a museum.

Advanced_Barnacle232

When was that?

AgallochFanDeerDick

2524

CalvinandHobbes811

She didn’t realize for sure what it was.

patkgreen

Halsey observed high charity first?

AgallochFanDeerDick

I reread and it was someone else who observed it but the data was sent to Halsey for examination

boustil_yasser

I think they’re talking about that telescope on mars that saw it before first contact

Thx

Arctelis

No, but also kind of yes. Onyx was discovered in 2491, in 2511 archaeological expeditions uncovered Forerunner ruins. So at the latest by then the assortment of secret government agencies knew aliens existed *at one point*. But given that they were hundred thousand year old ruins, assumed that the species had gone extinct for some reason. The first any modern human had confirmation that aliens were alive and present in the galaxy was a few months before Harvest, when Kig-Yar pirates boarded a human freighter, and the captain attempted to beat an Unggoy to death with a fire extinguisher before being killed by a huragok.

ggf66t

its been years since i read that book, but basically the huragok refused to play the game before( it didnt want to harm another be-ing), as the ungoy was killing space insects or mice, but then killed the first human ever, and when the ungoy asked the huragok a question, it said, I got 1 point or something like that. ... dark dark humor... I loved it

HyaedesSing

Xeno-archeology was already a pretty respected field of research before first contact. Certain elements in the government were likely aware of the existence of the forerunners in some way for quite some time, usually in the form of the odd artefact or two. There were probably also the mausoleums of those species wiped out by the Halo array. Anders has a doctorate in it by 2531, so its definitely a field of study probably well before First Contact.

HaloGuy381

Moreover, it’s specified she studied under Dr Halsey, so clearly Anders didn’t invent the field herself.

Timlugia

Also, didn't human already put forerunner artifacts in normal city museums like Cote d'Azure?

Bungo_pls

Harvest was first contact. Thus the name of the novel. I think there were ruins of past civilizations discovered on some colonies but no other living species.

Not-TheNSA

As far as the lore goes humanity first encountered intelligent and complex thinking life on Harvest when they meet the Covenant for the first time. Based on the number of human colonies in the galaxy it’s safe to say they encountered alien life (birds and animals, bugs and other life) when they started to colonize space, I’d imagine around the time the Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Drive was invented (2291). However throughout the deeper lore (terminals, data pads, books, marketing etc…) there are several examples of humans finding ruins that are not of human or Covenant origin (most likely Forerunner or possibly Precursor) these date back to before first contact on Harvest in 2524. So by the time the Covenant show up it’s likely that ONI, HighCom, FleetCom, the upper levels of Government likely suspect that there is intelligent alien life out there for roughly 200 years or so, humanity as a whole wouldn’t have known on a wide scale till likely a few months after the first battle of harvest in 2524. TLDR; Humanity as a whole knows around 2524, select high level government and military personnel would have highly suspected as early as 2291.

Silent_Reavus

I mean depends on if you mean modern humans.

Sebfolgero

Probably the first time they slipspaced to a planet.
