Also, a bit more for you, don't pat a dog's head when first greeting them. It can freak them out. If you're greeting a dog especially for the first time, close your fist and hold it out for them to approach with your hand being dog chin height or lower. Let's them be more comfortable approaching with the added bonus that if they end up biting they're not getting the meat of your hand.
I agree completely. I just saw a site that showed kids and adults being attacked in the dog shelter. In the shelter! Awful. The shelter doesn't always know the truth about a dog's temperment. The same site had people saying they had their dog for years and all of a sudden it attacked someone in the family.
