Can’t go wrong with either school district. Both Mechanicsburg and Hummelstown/LD are rated highly in the state year after year, schools will be great in either place. I don’t know anything about thier special needs programs though. You might want to consider choosing to live on the side of the river you will be commuting too. Crossing the bridges at rush hour is a pain if you have to commute to the other side.

I lived in Hummelstown when my Kids were very young and it’s a nice small town. However, if you live in the vicinity of the Swatara Creek, it can be prone to flooding, sometimes severe. So it just depends on location if you’re wanting to completely avoid that. I don’t know much about the SD, since my only experience was my oldest daughter started her first half of kindergarten there. She did enjoy it, but that was nearly 9 years ago.

Thank you for this info. Good to know about the creek flooding.

Hummelstown more than once voted as best school in PA and/ or top 10. Google to see what u can find.

LD is fantastic and their special needs program outweighs Derry township/Hershey programs imo. I believe the support, staff, teachers, and admin are way more caring than I have heard about Hershey. Their paraprofessionals are so kind, hard working, and patient. I know a few of them outside of their programs and they’re just as fantastic outside their roles as they are during school hours. The students are also kind, encouraging, and interactive with the special needs students and their programs. LDSD is absolutely one I def recommend looking into

I have heard that Lower Dauphin is absolutely amazing with their special education department. Far better than Derry Township (Hershey).

Follow up- where are your jobs? If you work in Harrisburg, Hummelstown will be an easier.commute. If you work across the river, the. Mechanicsburg is it. I have heard good things about the Mechanicsburg and Camp Hill School District. AVOID Cumberland Valley- just because it is MASSIVE.

FruitNVeggieTray

We do work in Harrisburg. Thank you!

I live in Hummelstown but my kids went to Derry Township schools. I recommend the district as it’s one of the best in the state. I think there are still maps online that show you what parts of Hummelstown go to Lower Dauphin vs Derry Township.

Lower dauphin’s special education department is really good, and in select cases has year round programs

My daughter went to LD and worked with the special needs area and they are great. I did speak to someone who had their kids in Central Dauphin and pulled them out specifically for the LD special needs program. But I don’t have first hand experience, just letting you know when I’ve seen

We moved back east with our daughter to be closer to family after living in Oregon. We purchased our first home in the area and the quality of the school district was an important factor. Our daughter is doing well and really likes Lower Dauphin as do we, no complaints. We're almost equidistant to Middletown and Hummelstown and we like the location. My wife works at UPMC in Harrisburg and her commute is about 15 minutes.

We moved to hummelstown from rural Nebraska last year. We absolutely love it! Here! Kids go to Hershey high School and it's been wonderful. I can't say enough good things about it

I will warn you not move into LD if your kids need special ed services. I’m not going into it here but you can message me privately if you want details.
