Our vessel is seemingly called to Hallownest, so it would make sense if they have some connection to a psychic plane, which would also explain the mushrooms’ shared mind. The vessels act on instincts, which can be manipulated by the thoughts of the people around them. We spend time with Quirrel because he wants us to, and we connect to that desire and are drawn to him, so we stick around until the Hollow Knight calls us again
