Unfortunately the exterior doors the last owners put on are interior doors and keep busting open in the winter/don’t retain any warmth. So they’ve got to go!
If you can't match, I'd go with the second option. For a home like this you don't want to do a lot of high contrast, you want it to fade into the environment and feel like it's part of the forest.
Oof this was my same introduction to renovation my first three houses were in a rural area and a bunch of "we built our house ourselves" stuff and it was all against code and also horrible for the electric bill what a nightmare but GREAT LEARNING EXPERIENCEs lmao 😂 I wish you luck
So why not just repaint the new doors to match? I think going even with a slightly lighter than the original trim would be a good idea too! Still blends with the nature and the decor, but makes it pop a bit more than say the same color or the second olive option you have.
Of course but having an off white pop is wayyyy less intense than a black pop! Lol if they really didn’t want a pop I don’t think the black would even be an option 😋
Not the black. It would ruin the aesthetic of the place. the whole point of this place is that it blends well into the trees. Black would just spoil that! Normally I would agree on contrasting trim. However here, I think it would just spoil this beautiful home. This is an unusual home, so you the last thing you want to do is paint it like average homes with coloured trim because they lack detail! You don't need that because there's so much interesting detail in the home. I'd also plant a low hedge in front of the deck to hide the underneath of it.
I am surprised how many people like the black. It doesn't make much sense to me. The surrounding landscape is so gorgeous, I agree that keeping things subtle and letting nature take center stage feels like the righ tmove.
The black does look cool at first glance in that particular photo. But that photo is cropped, so it doesn't capture how the black trim would look against the whole house and its setting.
Yep, this. The whole point of a home like this that's tucked against the forest is to blend in / fade away and feel like it's a part of nature. No contrast needed!
This is beautiful. I like the second one better, it blends. Ordinarily I'd say color, Color, COLOR! but in this case, this is just such a beautifully natural look I'd stay as close to that as possible.
agreed — love how the whole face of the house looks uniform and connected…
It looks so beautiful in the original design … can you just reproduce the original colors for roof, walls, windows, and doors?
Yes, exactly. Easy to do if you’re using Marvin windows (they have metal clad in “Suede”) and Benjamin Moore Kingsport Gray will get you an almost identical look. The lighter beige that Marvin offers fades, in my experience. I think it is called Pebble. It has a pink undertone which isn’t great. However, if you go that way, I think the match in BM paint is “Ashley Gray”
i like the idea of a little contrast so they don't completely blend, but the black is very stark. Maybe urbane bronze [https://www.google.com/search?newwindow=1&sca\_esv=b963f0a8f38f637d&rlz=1C1ONGR\_enUS1088US1089&sxsrf=ADLYWII1EXkCixGZO4tNTGt3b6\_sNwnlZA:1715878297740&q=urbane+bronze&uds=ADvngMhe3Nsbs1fFtrAFqYjYwnqT2jqFjdDACAZ8-QOetgOPPtOPbQMK3QD9Q1m9THZCQmF48tQi0Vk9xUyvCcy\_I1BbgPsVv3gxOQhOBgkvVRSjOTXxNbLzkdQcUVBfAzHG6f\_RZMkFYo7w4Qh549ILIJU5nWhVuRYZ15YTVDuW2h8vAr4vAPe9OyeO8-eP4X6lOGimncuFAoi9Dzd1bnwxBCvs3QfGuzJnLIwWe443k6E7Tk3pfjVUxQhZ53uLmJrO10z6JOGA3rZCpDT2Ff0MNKhIUKgMHaF6XjN8qNw2LQrZ6Hse8pCTtDpxSGbBZeGIRW7eiqAf&udm=2&prmd=isvnmbt&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiMlqjj0JKGAxVtkO4BHReDB4MQtKgLegQIHRAB&biw=1850&bih=1003&dpr=1.1](https://www.google.com/search?newwindow=1&sca_esv=b963f0a8f38f637d&rlz=1C1ONGR_enUS1088US1089&sxsrf=ADLYWII1EXkCixGZO4tNTGt3b6_sNwnlZA:1715878297740&q=urbane+bronze&uds=ADvngMhe3Nsbs1fFtrAFqYjYwnqT2jqFjdDACAZ8-QOetgOPPtOPbQMK3QD9Q1m9THZCQmF48tQi0Vk9xUyvCcy_I1BbgPsVv3gxOQhOBgkvVRSjOTXxNbLzkdQcUVBfAzHG6f_RZMkFYo7w4Qh549ILIJU5nWhVuRYZ15YTVDuW2h8vAr4vAPe9OyeO8-eP4X6lOGimncuFAoi9Dzd1bnwxBCvs3QfGuzJnLIwWe443k6E7Tk3pfjVUxQhZ53uLmJrO10z6JOGA3rZCpDT2Ff0MNKhIUKgMHaF6XjN8qNw2LQrZ6Hse8pCTtDpxSGbBZeGIRW7eiqAf&udm=2&prmd=isvnmbt&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiMlqjj0JKGAxVtkO4BHReDB4MQtKgLegQIHRAB&biw=1850&bih=1003&dpr=1.1)
or a soft navy?
Not black. I love how it looks now because it blends into nature. Black may look out of place, plus black will show cobwebs and dust more…which may be an issue if it’s only a temporary home.
I like option 2- trying to keep it as close to the original as possible. In the first picture, it seems as if it grew there within the landscape. A good thing imo
Either a forest green or bismuth subsalicylate pink. I'm for the former, but I've seen some houses with the latter. Ditto for tummy upset medication liquids. Hmm, pink and green...
P.s. it is a gorgeous house. Definitely green!
*I like the sage. I also say keep as is. We also don’t know where this is (mountain, lake, city view), what part of the country, or what the interior looks like. With so many windows, indoor and outdoor should flow together
*by reading this comment, you agree to me moving in to that amazing house with them. I will cook!
It’s just so neutral. I couldn’t stand it myself but I see the draw of keeping it from standing out in the landscape it sits in. Black doors and trim, IMO, won’t work with the putty. I guess at this point you change the siding and go with a stain.
I’m not helping, am I? There are programs that let you play around with colors. I’d be trying the darkest green I could find with black trim. Or seeing how I liked the siding black.
Beautiful home whatever you choose to do.
It depends on what your family member wants. Do they want the doors, windows, and trim to blend into the house and trees or do they want it to stand out? If they want it to blend in, the current colors are perfect for that, if they want it to stand out, then new colors like the black would work.
I find the Black makes it harsh. The Third tone is much nicer.
Metallic tone might be an idea … the colour tone of the railing looks like copper.
I feel a coppery metallic finish would lift it, bronze too.
The window manufacturers rendered it for them. I’m not sure what software they used but I bet you could pay someone on fiverr for pretty cheap if you can’t find a software
I would normally choose black but I think your hone lends itself better to the subdued sage color. One thing though. Go just a shade or two deeper in the same tone. Just a tad more pop.
I would do the #2 putty first. Then if he doesn't like it, it could progressively go darker from there. Such as blending some black paint into the putty paint without going fully black, or using a sponge or stencil roller to paint black onto the putty to give it some textured look. Then, it can still be painted fully black if he wanted.
Black. You need some contrast. You should notice the outlines from the outside. Currently and the second choice just don't add anything. I wouldn't bother with the second choice because it isn't different enough from the current to warrant the work or money.
I like the black in it both will look good. It's a gorgeous home. No need to paint anything. Get a few pota with plants or flowers that have black in them and call it a day
A tannish green would be nice and will complement the setting

I feel like black is just on trend for the moment. I’d stay with something similar that’s already there. Having the windows boldly stick out will change the whole homes ascetic.
Do they not have Bronze?
Black is too stark and evokes a city vibe. Terratone and Sandstone will end up looking like you tried to match but couldn't do it, so a contrasting color is better. Forest Green and Bronze are good options for cabins.
I'm assuming you're looking for a clad option because they are lower maintenance, but natural wood would look best, it's just a lot of upkeep and the siding and windows have a weathered patina that will be hard to match even in natural wood. So go with clad and go with contrast.
The only other suggestion I have is to lose the mullions (dividers on the glass) if you're getting a clad option. Especially the 4 lite option in your samples. 4 lite is a sleek, modern design. The 10 lite doors that are there have a rustic feel, and the decorative transoms above the doors are coming out to fit taller doors; so you should match the glass of the large windows in the second story. No mullions.
I would not touch a single thing. It looks perfect already
Dark green or moss green? Definitely retain the natural feel of the place. It is perfect now, but I know you have to change.
This is what I was thinking - a darker green colour might look nice and natural to reflect the forest around it
Yes, a building near me has all hunter green windows and doors and it looks great!
That's a shame. FWIW, I also prefer the current look to either of the new choices and agree that the house needs to fade into the forest background.
Oof this was my same introduction to renovation my first three houses were in a rural area and a bunch of "we built our house ourselves" stuff and it was all against code and also horrible for the electric bill what a nightmare but GREAT LEARNING EXPERIENCEs lmao 😂 I wish you luck
I see a brown door and I want it painted black
So why not just repaint the new doors to match? I think going even with a slightly lighter than the original trim would be a good idea too! Still blends with the nature and the decor, but makes it pop a bit more than say the same color or the second olive option you have.
As OP says, by the sounds of it, I don’t think they’re looking for them to ‘pop’. I think they want them to blend in.
Of course but having an off white pop is wayyyy less intense than a black pop! Lol if they really didn’t want a pop I don’t think the black would even be an option 😋
Damn, this sucks
I'm not fond of either option. I'd go maybe a gun metal grey or a brown that is just dark enough to accent the siding.
Yeah it seems like the new consensus is a slightly darker brown :). Give a little bit of contrast but not so jarring!
completely agree!
for a house like that, let it blend into the surroundings.
Right! Thing is beautiful!
Not the black. It would ruin the aesthetic of the place. the whole point of this place is that it blends well into the trees. Black would just spoil that! Normally I would agree on contrasting trim. However here, I think it would just spoil this beautiful home. I think the black would be a good choice for a city home, but as a vacation home, you want a different aesthetic.
The black does look cool at first glance in that particular photo. But that photo is cropped, so it doesn't capture how the black trim would look against the whole house and its setting.
Agreed! It looks so pretty that it’s currently all flush with everything else.
I agree. It's perfect as is.
Yep, this. The whole point of a home like this that's tucked against the forest is to blend in / fade away and feel like it's a part of nature. No contrast needed!
The black is trendy right now... it will look dated in 10 years. And it looks bad already. So much contrast.
This is beautiful. I like the second one better, it blends. Ordinarily I'd say color, Color, COLOR! but in this case, this is just such a beautifully natural look I'd stay as close to that as possible.
The black does not enhance it. It looks great as it is, monotone.
agreed — love how the whole face of the house looks uniform and connected… It looks so beautiful in the original design … can you just reproduce the original colors for roof, walls, windows, and doors?
Yes, exactly. Easy to do if you’re using Marvin windows (they have metal clad in “Suede”) and Benjamin Moore Kingsport Gray will get you an almost identical look. I would paint the new doors the same color as the current ones.
A coffee brown would be more natural, less harsh than black and contrast in a lovely way.
That’s a great idea!
Ya I love the idea of a nice warm brown
I think the putty is nicer! https://preview.redd.it/zkbog7h5pt0d1.png?width=1102&format=png&auto=webp&s=0911ee84ccec6ae46c16dc1a4f8e82603e643c7b
Not black it’s so stark. A nice soft green to go with a nature look.
I love Reddit for people like you!!
i like the idea of a little contrast so they don't completely blend, but the black is very stark. Maybe urbane bronze [https://www.google.com/search?newwindow=1&sca\_esv=b963f0a8f38f637d&rlz=1C1ONGR\_enUS1088US1089&sxsrf=ADLYWII1EXkCixGZO4tNTGt3b6\_sNwnlZA:1715878297740&q=urbane+bronze&uds=ADvngMhe3Nsbs1fFtrAFqYjYwnqT2jqFjdDACAZ8-QOetgOPPtOPbQMK3QD9Q1m9THZCQmF48tQi0Vk9xUyvCcy\_I1BbgPsVv3gxOQhOBgkvVRSjOTXxNbLzkdQcUVBfAzHG6f\_RZMkFYo7w4Qh549ILIJU5nWhVuRYZ15YTVDuW2h8vAr4vAPe9OyeO8-eP4X6lOGimncuFAoi9Dzd1bnwxBCvs3QfGuzJnLIwWe443k6E7Tk3pfjVUxQhZ53uLmJrO10z6JOGA3rZCpDT2Ff0MNKhIUKgMHaF6XjN8qNw2LQrZ6Hse8pCTtDpxSGbBZeGIRW7eiqAf&udm=2&prmd=isvnmbt&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiMlqjj0JKGAxVtkO4BHReDB4MQtKgLegQIHRAB&biw=1850&bih=1003&dpr=1.1](https://www.google.com/search?newwindow=1&sca_esv=b963f0a8f38f637d&rlz=1C1ONGR_enUS1088US1089&sxsrf=ADLYWII1EXkCixGZO4tNTGt3b6_sNwnlZA:1715878297740&q=urbane+bronze&uds=ADvngMhe3Nsbs1fFtrAFqYjYwnqT2jqFjdDACAZ8-QOetgOPPtOPbQMK3QD9Q1m9THZCQmF48tQi0Vk9xUyvCcy_I1BbgPsVv3gxOQhOBgkvVRSjOTXxNbLzkdQcUVBfAzHG6f_RZMkFYo7w4Qh549ILIJU5nWhVuRYZ15YTVDuW2h8vAr4vAPe9OyeO8-eP4X6lOGimncuFAoi9Dzd1bnwxBCvs3QfGuzJnLIwWe443k6E7Tk3pfjVUxQhZ53uLmJrO10z6JOGA3rZCpDT2Ff0MNKhIUKgMHaF6XjN8qNw2LQrZ6Hse8pCTtDpxSGbBZeGIRW7eiqAf&udm=2&prmd=isvnmbt&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiMlqjj0JKGAxVtkO4BHReDB4MQtKgLegQIHRAB&biw=1850&bih=1003&dpr=1.1) or a soft navy?
That’s a gorgeous colour!!
What an incredibly beautiful home
What about a nice sage ish green? It would still pop but not fight the scenery.
Yesssssss. That would be perfect 👌
Second option for sure!
Not black. I love how it looks now because it blends into nature. Black may look out of place, plus black will show cobwebs and dust more…which may be an issue if it’s only a temporary home.
I’m a big fan of black trim but in this house option 2.
I like option 2- trying to keep it as close to the original as possible. In the first picture, it seems as if it grew there within the landscape. A good thing imo
It definitely feels like that in person too!
olive
What an amazing deck.
It’s so gorgeous in person!
Definitely the putty.
Love the current look, so I’d say go with the house color
I prefer the second one, but whichever one you choose, I would recommend also painting the trim on the windows above the doors to match.
Adding contrast will make it look dated. The current look is clean, minimal, fresh, modern, and luxurious.
Not the black
Either a forest green or bismuth subsalicylate pink. I'm for the former, but I've seen some houses with the latter. Ditto for tummy upset medication liquids. Hmm, pink and green... P.s. it is a gorgeous house. Definitely green!
Forest green would be beautiful!
No need to repaint the house. Also the doors don't need to match the siding, necessarily. A beige or tan or even white would look excellent.
Leave it alone- its perfect, you are on a lake community (looks like) you want to blend in.
- Keep the same. - Benjamin Moore’s ‘Revere Pewter’ or ‘Pale Oak’ for exterior would be beautiful.
The black could only work if the rest of the window trims also got painted, I’d keep it close to the orig color
Yes they’re redoing all the windows and doors so it’ll all match. For some reason the suppliers only rendered the front doors.
The second door olive tone is the lesser of two evils, myself l appreciate a hard contrast tone, somewhere in the brown/ olive tone.
I like the way it is now, and what a lovely home!
*I like the sage. I also say keep as is. We also don’t know where this is (mountain, lake, city view), what part of the country, or what the interior looks like. With so many windows, indoor and outdoor should flow together *by reading this comment, you agree to me moving in to that amazing house with them. I will cook!
I like the starker contrast of the black but I suggest a charcoal gray. Kind of a compromise but I think it will go nicely with
I love the idea of charcoal grey. I will suggest that!
The house is on a beige/brown color scheme. Charcoal gray is on a gray/black color scheme. The entire house will look wrong.
Benjamin Moore Black Forest Green PM-12
Green
A nice ashy brown would look nice
It’s just so neutral. I couldn’t stand it myself but I see the draw of keeping it from standing out in the landscape it sits in. Black doors and trim, IMO, won’t work with the putty. I guess at this point you change the siding and go with a stain. I’m not helping, am I? There are programs that let you play around with colors. I’d be trying the darkest green I could find with black trim. Or seeing how I liked the siding black. Beautiful home whatever you choose to do.
A moss green or sage green, leave the house the color it is. Very nice home.
2
Def black
The beige option (if that is what that color is). The black is too dark and the contrast is weird. The other one blends in nicely.
This is maybe my favorite house I’ve ever seen.
That is the most beautiful house I have seen
Thank you! It’s a beautiful spot and very charming. One of the more understated cottages on that particular lake for sure :)
Two 👍👍👍 Gorgeous place!!
It depends on what your family member wants. Do they want the doors, windows, and trim to blend into the house and trees or do they want it to stand out? If they want it to blend in, the current colors are perfect for that, if they want it to stand out, then new colors like the black would work.
It's really beautiful as is, but the 2nd choice since it must be decided.
If you’re aiming for contrast a dark burgundy would have a similar affect as the black without being as harsh.
That would be stunning in the fall when the colours change. Someone else suggested burnt sienna too!
Whatever you go with, I’d paint the upper trim for continuity.
Black
Blend that new color in for sure!! Absolutely beautiful house, that deck is a dream!
It's kind of nice how the house blends in the the area now, why change it?
I find the Black makes it harsh. The Third tone is much nicer. Metallic tone might be an idea … the colour tone of the railing looks like copper. I feel a coppery metallic finish would lift it, bronze too.
The current colour looks great
I’d say match the color exactly to what the currently are, they’re perfect as is
I like the current most of all
2 because this place isn’t meant to look modern the black is too modern.
Second option. Less contrast is better
How did you do this? I want to change our door and window colour and would love to test some options out like this!
The window manufacturers rendered it for them. I’m not sure what software they used but I bet you could pay someone on fiverr for pretty cheap if you can’t find a software
Dark brown or dark green, to give it an "enchanted cottage" touch
As close to the original as possible - you can color match. It blends in and allows nature and the view to be the stars.
I think the doors are perfect the way they are. Read that you have to replace them but try to get as close to that color as you can.
Burnt Siena
Wow that would be gorgeous. Especially in the fall when the colours change!
Check out BRICK&BATTEN. You may find their home transformations relevant to this home project.
The black is tooooo distracting
The black is jarring. I think the more natural look is nice.
Doors - Natural wood STAINED to match the deck rails. House leave the color it is, it fits into the forest.
I love this idea!
Just let me live there, please?
Neither!!
Beige
I would normally choose black but I think your hone lends itself better to the subdued sage color. One thing though. Go just a shade or two deeper in the same tone. Just a tad more pop.
Don't you dare defile this beautiful home with black paint
I would do the #2 putty first. Then if he doesn't like it, it could progressively go darker from there. Such as blending some black paint into the putty paint without going fully black, or using a sponge or stencil roller to paint black onto the putty to give it some textured look. Then, it can still be painted fully black if he wanted.
sage green doors
The black looks awesome. It can be reduced to a dark gray if you think it’s too bold but I like the contrast
Black
Definitely the green
I like the black, as it adds contrast aabd emphasis to the doors/windows
one that only allows me in
Do the leaded glass windows above the doors have any color in them?
Match exactly how they are now! Blending with the rest is the way to go!
Black. You need some contrast. You should notice the outlines from the outside. Currently and the second choice just don't add anything. I wouldn't bother with the second choice because it isn't different enough from the current to warrant the work or money.
Absolutely the color that’s the same color as the house. Love it
The second one blends in very well and doesn’t look as harsh as the black doors.
I would go natural wood to match the face of the deck, but of the two you posted I would go with matching the house color.
Not the black! Please not the black. Blend it into the house.
I'm a sucker for contrast and dark doors but I personally would be good with either.
No to black.
Red.
red
I like the contrast with the black.
The one that isn't black
2!
Not black
BLACK
Beautiful place! Maybe keep it a more natural wood and pick up the the wood color on your deck?
Have you considered forest green?
The green color hands down would look amazing and allow the home to still stand out yet blend at the same time. ❤️
Option#1
Black
Black...
If you can't match it go with the second choice.
Black or moss
Definitely not black
Option 1
Black
Black for sure. Needs contrast
Second option for me
White🤍🤍
I’d do putty or a bronze color if it’s available. Black is far too stark for this setting and design.
Black
Taupe
Taupe Black is way to jarring
Don’t do black 😩
I love the black!
Take it out and put in a big sliding glass/accordion door?
I love the black
Black it's modern yet not too modern and will look less dated
The sort pic already looks the best…
I like the black in it both will look good. It's a gorgeous home. No need to paint anything. Get a few pota with plants or flowers that have black in them and call it a day
1 is best. Three works. #2 is not my taste.
Perfect to me.
Neither? I think a brownish gray between those would be good
A tannish green would be nice and will complement the setting https://preview.redd.it/whxlsis2aw0d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3567d3585a5b0bd2ba9676eba8fe2a5ae8b1b117
Vacation home that size?! Must be nice 😂
C) take a chip of paint to the hardware store and get as close as possible to the building paint.
Black!
Red
absolutely the second one, it's my type.
Out of these two, black. But I’d like to suggest red or green
current color
Dont change it. It is so good how it is. It blends in to the landscape and has a natural organic look how it is
The second one. That house is beautiful
Black
Leave it as is..... But if you must have color...... bright. Red
I really love it how it is but if you really want to change it then I’d go black
Option 2. It fits the surroundings beautifully. I feel the black might stand out to much.
Black
black.
wow the house is so so nice! i prefer the black one cuz it makes this house more mordern
wow!!!! the house is amazing! where is it?
The existing colour is best.
I’m a big fan of black accents in home decor but with your house it’s not a good idea. I’d try to match to existing
Black
Option 3, green
Black 🖤
Color match!
I have no input but I just want to say I love your house!
2
Not the black!
Black
Deep blackish- green for me PS: beautiful place!
Hi can we get a photo tour of your beautiful home? 🙏👌
I feel like black is just on trend for the moment. I’d stay with something similar that’s already there. Having the windows boldly stick out will change the whole homes ascetic.
Black
Black

Dark Green or Navy
The second option
Do they not have Bronze? Black is too stark and evokes a city vibe. Terratone and Sandstone will end up looking like you tried to match but couldn't do it, so a contrasting color is better. Forest Green and Bronze are good options for cabins. I'm assuming you're looking for a clad option because they are lower maintenance, but natural wood would look best, it's just a lot of upkeep and the siding and windows have a weathered patina that will be hard to match even in natural wood.
