My top must-see, rewatch favorites: ##Requiem for a Vampire + Shivers of the Vampires If it is your first time "Rollin'" (Jean Rollin', Rollin', Rollin', Rollin' - Yeaaah!) and don't like Requiem? Then swap to Shivers, or vice versa. Give it time, and let the mood seep into you. Bonus: light Incenses of the Dead and black candles for improved viewing. Least favorite: Iron Rose Too messy and more of a drawn-out mood piece. However, it got excellent location and photography!

DelightfulyDark

Yeah maybe I will watch Shiver again and then be Rollin over to Requiem lol. Thanks

HumbleShibe

I'm sorry, I should have read your post more carefully.

DelightfulyDark

I'm happy to get other people's takes on these movies. The comments, though, are very split on which movies are good and which aren't. I think I'm going to have to break out the bong and suck it up and watch them all. lol

If you like cerebral gothic romance you can give The Iron Rose a try. Then again it might bore you to tears, can’t really say. It’s good to be open minded with Rollin movies.

DelightfulyDark

Yeah. open minded is good lol

I’ve seen all his main filmography barring his adult films (seen a few of those). I really liked his first film, it’s the only one that’s all black and white. Some of my favorites are: The Iron Rose (Big departure from his vampire films and arguably one of his best), Grapes of Death (a Zombie film), Living Dead Girl (by far his most gory film), Two Orphan Vampires (90’s film that was his first vampire film in a long time), Lost in New York (this is a weirder short film and was featured in a Clams Casino music video). His latter work is highly overlooked. However, I wouldn’t recommend Night of the Clocks or Mask of Medusa to someone getting into Rollin. These films are very meta feeling. Rollin also did some really random films outside of the horror genre such as thrillers The Sidewalks of Bangkok and Killing Car. Killing Car is a really underrated film. As far as his vampire films, I loved Requiem and The Nude Vampire. Lips of Blood is good but definitely a little slower (very very atmospheric). Fascination is also a standout as well and probably his most well known. The Demoniacs is basically a Satanic ghost version of revenge films. It’s very trippy. Night of the Hunted was very trippy too, it’s about a woman who can’t remember who she is. Dracula’s Fiancée is very slow but it’s a great return for Brigitte Lahaie. You also have Zombie Lake. It’s considered his worst film, basically Jess Franco didn’t show up to set and so they called Rollin to do a film about Nazi zombies. I also can’t forget The Escapees which is a really good foray into the drama genre for Rollins. It’s very well done and has an excellent story with some of that signature Rollin atmosphere. It just really depends on what you’re in the mood for but everything is very atmospheric. I’ve not seen a Rollins film I didn’t enjoy although Dracula’s Fiancé is my least favorite it does have some killer nunsploitation vibes.

An amazing roll up of his work. Thank you so much. I have a lot of watching in my future

Requiem for a Vampire, The Nude Vampire, Fascination, The Living Dead Girl and Lips of Blood are well worth your time.

DelightfulyDark

I have the first 4 of those. I'll try again thanks!

Like all things it is down to your own taste. Trouble is with Rollin he is thought of as too Art House for the Horror/Exploitation audience and too Horror/Exploitation for the Art House audience. This makes him hard to classify.

DelightfulyDark

That makes sense. I do like the slow eroticism of the movies, I think I probably need to smoke before the movie to deal with the slowww pacing.

I'm not as familiar with his work as I'd like to be, but I've owned Les raisins de la mort (The Grapes Of Death) on dvd for 15 years or so, and haven't watched it in about 10. Thanks to you, I'm gonna watch it again tonight.

DelightfulyDark

Cool I hope you like it. I got about 5 movies and will maybe only like Shiver when it is done.
