We have the same issue at every place we move to, whether it be renting or bought - easiest thing to do for most of it, is write "return to sender" and chuck it in the nearest mailbox. This stops the majority of mail from being sent. Junk mail with named parties is harder to stop. Other than that I think you can tell royal mail to stop specific names to you address? Not sure though Wouldn't worry about the accidental opening.

Just return to sender, you aren't responsible that they might be missing debts by not fixing their address.

I just wrote "no longer at this address, return to sender" and popped them in the postbox. The odd ones we get now, 12 months later, go straight in the bin. You're not liable for anything to do with the previous owner, they just send them to their last known address.

I found RTS on the envelopes and putting them back in the postbox didn’t work until I let a significant number build up (20 or so), wrote RTS on them in large red Sharpie and put them all back in the postbox in one go. They seem to have stopped now.

I've ordered on eBay customised rubber (self-inking in red) wet stamp with my text "Not known at this address. Please return to sender" and also used red ink pen to cross the desitnation address. This exercise alone was very satisfying. Then, since every postage includes cost of returning, I simply dropped those mails back to the red mailbox. It worked very nicely!

I had the same issue as you. Been at my house 8 years and getting post still. I just bin them now. I tried to do the decent thing and RTS but they were for debt collection agencies and they didn’t stop. Opened a few letters by accident and called them to say they no longer lived there. It didn’t stop. I feel no guilt at just binning them.
