All of the FedEx drivers in Madison are contracted out. They work for other companies that delivers out of a few different warehouses on Jetplex. These companies treat people like shit. They are overworked and underpaid. It only makes sense that this does not bring out the best in the workers.

Quellman

This might explain why the drivers don’t have FedEx trucks but drive Penske or nondescript vans. A real shame for the employees being treated poorly.

wolfgang2399

I think it’s just FexEx ground routes that are third party. I think Express is still corporate owned routes. I think. I’ve also heard that the brothers that run the routes out of Corinth were buying the Madison routes but I don’t know if that ever happened or not.

ezfrag

There are both Ground and Express contractors in the area. The company I used to work for had 3-4 deliveries a day and only one was an actual FedEx Employee and he just handled the afternoon delivery and pick up. The guys who came in the mornings were all contractors. One day they had a truck down and showed up with a Cadillac CTS full of boxes of copier toner.

squats_and_sugars

This may explain why 90% of the fedex shipments I get are pretty good, then occasionally there is a shitshow of a delivery. Had a mini lathe that was supposed to be delivered, never showed up. The delivery picture makes it look like they left it on the curb on my grass (definitely far from my front door). Considering the ship weight (148lbs) they should have had a dolly and liftgate to unload but my best guess is that they didn't so they left it there right off the edge of the truck, and a scrapper/picker/etc went by and grabbed it thinking I was putting stuff out...

MTsumi

2lbs short of Fedex heavy, so probably no liftgate.

Confident-Tadpole503

According to Reddit every company in this area underpays and treats workers like shit. A better reason is that particular driver was just a lazy POS.

ImNotThatConfused

yeah, the pay doesn't seem that bad. I know only one "fedex" driver (he's contracted out) and he's a ridiculously hard working machine of a guy. I believe that the pay is something similar to $100 a day plus more per package delievered. Don't hold me to that but it's similar.

Overall_Driver_7641

Some years ago it was $1.75 per box. Flat.

Tractorista

So, so true. The contractor I was working for was basically in death throes so they could barely hold onto drivers, it was a mess. One week I worked two sixteen hour days

Roll-tide-Mercury

Notice how much better UPS drivers are compared to fed ex? Fex ex contracts their drivers whereas UPS has their folks in house. I’m not saying that contractors are bad but that the culture at FED EX is not as good as UPS.

code39

I have always wondered why FedEx lost their Amazon contract. It's not hard to see why now. I have never had any issues with UPS, outside of being crazy expensive to ship with. Guess that's how their drivers make what they make.

IAmPattycakes

Only issue I've had with UPS recently was the driver delivered two of three boxes in a day, and probably forgot the third one in the truck. Said it couldn't be delivered (which, it was a smaller box than the other two, and you delivered the other two.) and made me drive to the damn store to pick it up. I'm a little salty I had to play the role of the delivery person without the pay since it was decently out of the way and I got it 3 days late, but at least they're better than FedEx.

burdell91

LEGO switched from FedEx to UPS a couple of years ago, and deliveries are much more reliable since then.

Wetlines77

UPS drivers make $35hr and are union members. Among delivery drivers, they are the gold standard. The FedEx driver that drops at my house will leave my stuff out in the rain at my side door instead of putting it 10ft further under my covered car spot.

The_Phasd

Company culture means everything. These people probably have no accountability and no incentive to care.

Roll-tide-Mercury

Yup!

mynextthroway

That's so odd. Chuck Noland seemed to be so concerned about punctual delivery.

HunnyBadger_dgaf

Willlllsssssoooonnnnnnnnnn!

MTsumi

My postal carrier is a shit show. Won't deliver to the door, leaves packages in the rain and in sight of the entire street when I have a covered porch. Last Christmas, the carrier left his back door open and left a trail of boxes down Homer Nance. I'm always thankful when I have a UPS delivery the same day as USPS because the UPS driver picks up the USPS boxes and sets them by the door with his delivery.

Roll-tide-Mercury

Call the post office. Tell on this carrier.

MTsumi

What's sad is, I'm afraid that I'll get targeted for retribution. The Ryland postal clerk was talking bad about the guy with the Ryland area carrier when I was in there once, so they definitely know about him.

QuantumDucksQuark

This is why I always choose USPS or UPS shipping options these days; it gives me peace of mind and “supports” a company that is “trying” to take care of their employees. Sadly, all parcel service workers are severely overworked due to the hyperconsuming society we live in, but at least UPS and USPS offer decent benefits and such.

shayna16

Husband ordered model paints from Tokyo a couple weeks ago and was literally sitting on the couch with a plain view of our front door. Saw FedEx was in the neighborhood for delivery and then checked the app and it said attempted delivery. Yeah ok. I’ve never had other companies not try and attempt delivery or lose anything more than FedEx.

Just_Another_Scott

FedEx has a quota. FedEx gives unrealistic quaotas. So to meet those quotas they mark the package as attempted delivery. Got told this by a FedEx employee.

amoeba15

I had ordered a new crockpot and was sitting outside when FedEx came. Started walking down the apartment stairs to meet the guy and without even looking up at me he just yeeted the box into the stairs as hard as he could and walked away. Peeled out of the parking lot like he was in the Indy 500. Crockpot was dented in half from it even with padding in the box. Target refunded it but holy shit that shouldn’t happen.

nopenope4567

Our area had an issue where FedEx drivers were placing packages against garage doors. Some people didn’t know the packages were there and would run them over when backing their cars out of the driveway.

burdell91

The FedEx ground guy for my route would regularly put heavy packages blocking the front storm door, so that I had to go out the back door or open the garage to go around and get it. It's not just irritating, it's dangerous - what if I didn't immediately go get the package, and then needed to get out of the house in an emergency?

Beaglemom2002

They have done this at my house. Once it was expensive meds for my cat. Fortunately, I haven't run over anything.

smurfpants84

Friend who worked for fedex explained that to me once. Called it a drive-by. Seemed that they had to attempt delivery on every package they were loaded. And if they were running late in the day, they would pull that maneuver and mark it as attempted but no-one available to receive the package and then on to the next one. This was like 2001-2005-ish. Their trucks had GPS that tracked their route, but it didn't track time. So it says they went to their scheduled deliveries but didn't say how long they spent at the location.

Nomad_Industries

Goodhart's Law: >When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.

amoeba15

Local USPS does this in my area and has for the last six years. Or they’ll mark delivered and apparently steal it. I’ve literally sat outside and tried to get their attention. Once on my way home from work I was behind the USPS truck as it drove right past my apartment and immediately got a “delivered at front door” text. Carrier never even stopped.

hellogodfrey

That happened to me one time, where someone (USPS) said something was undeliverable. It actually was deliverable. The package was sent back to the company and the order was cancelled, so I had to reorder the thing I had already ordered.

code39

I live on the 3rd floor (I know, but they signed up to deliver packages). I caught the guy on the other side of the complex walking back to his truck. The only reason he didn't deliver it was because I live on the 3rd floor. This was made clear when he drove back around and literally dropped the package on the sidewalk and handed me the device to sign for it. So he lost more time due to being lazy.

Martin1015

I always, always divert a FedEx package to have it delivered to one of their locations or to Walgreens. Stops that kind of delivery nonsense, have never had one show "attempted delivery" to Walgreens or their own offices, not sure how they'd explain that to corporate!

deeptele

Funny you should mention that. I had a package that was supposed to be sent to my office. They "attempted delivery" twice so I diverted to the FedEx store. It took them three attempts to actually get it to the store. The tracking site kept repeating the "On truck for delivery to store" step each day.

hellogodfrey

I would think in that case, it was actually on the truck for however many days it was.

Dinco_laVache

I have, several times, had FedEx drivers deliver a package — doing so with an exaggerated and sluggish manner that was so suspiciously slow, I couldn’t help but wonder if I wasn’t the target of some kind of Punked type hidden camera show. It was as if someone was doing an impression of the sloth from Zootopia it was so painfully slow. And I can’t say it was any effort to conserve energy or effort — it was to the point that it was almost like an isometric muscular hold at some points moving so slow and with zero inertia. The next time I had a FedEx package to be delivered, I wanted to get my phone out and record the guy. But I eventually decided against it. I didn’t want to be some Karen and anyways, I don’t know what was going on with that guy in his life. I’m not happy about that, but I’ve often heard those FedEx guys sometimes own/run their own trucks. They aren’t employed by FedEx. So.. if they’re dicking around on their job, they’re only shooting themselves in their own feet.

code39

It's never the same driver for my apartment complex. So I have seen a driver literally running up the stairs as fast as he could to ones like I described. I get the job probably sucks a lot of the time, but that doesn't mean you have to suck at it.

marc-kd

It's weird that we've gotten deliveries from the USPS, Amazon, Lowe's, and UPS where they all drive up the driveway, hand over or drop off the package, and leave. FedEx drivers have *twice* hit the landscaping brick wall lining one side of our driveway, and narrowly missed it a third time. In another instance, had I not been screaming at the driver to STOP, he would've backed into the deck and stairs at the back edge of our driveway. It's at the point where we literally put a sawhorse out at the top of the driveway whenever we're expecting a FedEx delivery to stop them short of it.

TheFunkinDuncan

FedEx ground is all contractors so no telling what you’re gonna get

OkWoodpecker1511

They're so bad. They left expensive rims in the middle of our front yard one time. Our neighbors are sketchy af. My car parts are regularly left in the most random spots sometimes in the rain. I hate FedEx but they're the only ones who deliver in the county

BasakaIsTheStrongest

I have twice had expensive electronics delivered to the wrong door and my signature forged as accepting it. Fortunately the first time my neighbor brought me the package and the second time I caught the delivery lady as she was returning to her truck and, upon my asking, she said she couldn’t find my apartment and so just left it in front of a random door of my apartment block (my apartment’s front desk will take packages if the driver doesn’t know where to deliver them). It has hit a point where *not* being delivered by Fedex is a thing I seek out. The one time they actually took it to my door was when I ordered a firearm part and they needed to see my ID, which I guess is harder to fake doing. I wish I could require that for any expensive thing.

gymngdoll

We must have the same guy. I had one do this to me 2 weeks ago. Exactly same thing - pulled into the driveway, sat there for like 30-45 seconds, never got out, marked it as attempt delivered and drove off. I have the whole thing on my Ring camera and I could see him out the front window from my desk.

code39

I don't get it either. They are already there. It would probably take less than a min to get out and deliver the package. In my case it was per laziness because he didn't feel like walking up to the 3rd floor. This isn't just speculation either as he delivered other packages in my complex that day, and from my interaction with him after I chased him down told me all I needed to know.

Nancydrewdetective1

Wilson!!!!!!!!!!

crazyMartian42

I can't speak to what was happening with the other drivers. But the last time I had FedEx delivering. I by chance was outside when the truck pulled up, the driver went to the back of the truck for a long bit. He came out and told me that he couldn't find my package in the back. I got the package the next day.

cosmos7

Fedex recently delivered my stuff to the neighbor across the street.

emmy2189

FedEx here sucks! Get them to hold the packages at Walgreens or Dollar General and you don’t have to worry about it

addywoot

I like my FedEx guy. I fist bump him, say thanks, wave and give him cash at Christmas.

code39

I loved my UPS guy where I used to live. Had the same guy on that route for the 10+ years I lived there. I always had a gift for him at Xmas as well.

13Cyclopath

I’ve had a FedEx delivery driver put my package in a bag and tie it to my roadside mailbox. Ok, porch not visible from the street and equipped with camera/doorbell; mailbox any fool driving by can be a porch pirate without going anywhere near the porch ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

RewardNo8841

My dash cam recorded a speeding FedEx truck run a stop sign in the center of a subdivision. He nearly struck a child on a bike. I followed him out of the subdivision to capture the ID of the truck & possibly the driver. I went to their office off of Madison Blvd & found my way to a supervisor. The driver had called him already & reported he was being followed & was "afraid for his safety." So, the super yelled, cussed & berated me for harassing the driver. He assured me I could be charged criminally for persuing their (FedEx) delivery vehicles. The super was not interested, what so ever, that the driver was speeding, was running stop signs or endangering pedestrians. He refused to take a complaint or view the video. I have refused to use FedEx since & encourage others to as well.

code39

I refuse to use them to ship anything, but I can't control who the companies I order stuff from chooses unfortunately.

RewardNo8841

Absolutely agree & understand that sometimes there is no option. But, when I have the choice, regardless of cost, I skip FedEx.

m1sterlurk

If somebody threatens you with an accusation of something like stalking or harassment, an option to always at least consider is going to the police first (and do not return the threat first...just do it). Yes, I know what's a weird take coming from me. Police really don't like being used as a threat. "A crime has been committed or is in the process of being committed, call the police." If the crime somebody says you have committed conveniently dematerializes because you stopped being annoying, the police are being used as a threat. Do note that for "harassment" to stick, you would have needed to actually harassed the driver directly rather than just having followed them awhile to get information on their company-owned vehicle before going to a supervisor. If you had harassed the driver over their actions, "being annoying" would technically be the crime of harassment. If THEY go to the cops first, they say "this person was harassing our driver". They control the narrative, and it is on you to prove that you weren't following them because you intended to harass them. The police may not even have a chance to know that your "crime" only existed because you were annoying to the supervisor. If YOU go to the cops first, your sequence of events didn't involve using the police as a threat. Your initial action was to go to the supervisor, who responded by saying that you were harassing their driver and that they would pursue criminal charges. If you explain that you escalated to calling the police because they threatened you with criminal charges, you gain protection in both "naive eye" and "cynical eye" from the cops. "Naive eye" is them perceiving you as an exasperated John/Jane Q. Citizen who was freaked out by their concerns being met with threats of criminal charges by the supervisor. "Cynical eye" is them perceiving you as having the exact intentions I am outlining here. Either way, there is record that you called to report a delivery driver driving in a reckless fashion and that your attempt to talk to the supervisor about it was met with threats of harassment charges. Your hand is firmly on the wheel of the narrative. Now, there are several possible risks with any police interaction, which is why I prefaced all of this with "at least consider"; not "this is always a good idea 100% of the time."

People want to feel like they belong… In all parts of live. We spend too much time at work to resent the place

Tractorista

I drove the biggest FedEx delivery truck they had for four or five months.... Here's the thing, it pays slightly above other entry level jobs in the area, but it was the most physically demanding job I've ever had, it was grueling. Didn't help that the contractor I was working for was basically going under so they had an incredibly hard time holding onto drivers, which put exponential strain on the drivers that were there and wanted to do a good job.... Also the driver doesn't load the packages and doesn't necessarily know where everything is, so when you're going top speed (because you have to) and bouncing all around, it's going to be a mess back there. I bet the driver just couldn't find your package, and instead of putting themselves way behind for the day, they figured they would get it to you the following day FedEx delivery is an incredibly unsafe job because of how fast you have to go. Race from one house or business to another, and then literally run from the truck to the house and back, then race to the next house. FedEx execs know it's unsafe but won't shell out more money to hire more drivers so everyone could slow down. I dunno maybe it's not economically feasible, or maybe it's just normal corporate greed and squeezing everything they can out of their employees, since they know there's like a never ending supply of new dupes who will be enticed by that pay bump on an Indeed job advertisement

code39

I know it's as tough job. But he was able to find my package no problem when he pulled back around to my building. Also the time he spent sitting there pulling up my delivery to mark it as "attempted" could have been used to actually deliver the package. What if it was a crucial package (medications, time sensitive documents, etc.)? From my interaction with him it was obvious that he did not want to carry the box up a couple flights of stairs (even though a different FedEx driver delivered some flat pack furniture a couple of weeks before no problem). I understand that lugging heavy boxes (this one weighed approx 60lbs) up to the third floor is not fun. I'm not a complete asshole (some parts are missing) as I have told the drivers I've had contact with that if you have a heavy package come get me and I will help you. The only person to take me up on this was the guy from the post office. But apartment buildings with 3 floors or more are common in this city so it shouldn't be a surprise when signing up for the job. ETA: What would be worse? Taking an extra minute to ensure a deliver and or complaints from customers experiencing this situation (of which there are plenty)?

aikouka

Back when PS5s were hard to get, I managed to snag one from Walmart for a friend of mine. It was being delivered through FedEx and FedEx usually delivers earlier in the morning for me, so I was at home waiting for it. Of course, since I'm commenting here, you can guess what happened... the driver stopped for about a minute and then left without delivering anything. I tried contacting FedEx, but they were pretty much useless. I went out to the FedEx facility, which to make matters worse, I had a rock kick up from a car in the lane next to me, which cracked my windshield. (Surprisingly, that's the only time I've ever had that happen on 565!) I probably would've chased down the driver, but I think I missed him actually arriving and only saw it later on my camera feed.

Aarrington88

Not just you. I actively avoid making purchases if the company uses FedEx as their shipping provider. I can’t remember the last time I actually received a FedEx package on time, and more than once had to actively track down the package and pick it up myself.

ara_arara

I just moved here and found your thread. Same thing just happened. I'm literally sitting in the living room refreshing delivery because mine IS sensitive and requires a signature. No Fedex truck even comes down the street and it's updated to 'attempted delivery'. Called 1-800-463-3339 and filed a case within 10 minutes of them tagging that. I'm very upset though - I paid a lot of money for next day shipping and I'm going to lose a lot of money because that package is late and they can't even tell me when on Monday they will "try again." 0 issues with UPS guys. Upset is an understatement.

Uhh_Manduhh

Had this same exact thing happen but with USPS. Our usual driver is just downright rude and constantly either doesn’t attempt deliveries or gives us our neighbors packages so he doesn’t have to drive to their building (and when we try to refuse those packages he just leaves them on the counter and leaves 😭).

LittleWhip138

My fiancee used to work for them and he quit because it was a ridiculous amount of work, hours, and the equipment never worked right. Plus he had to drive a crappy u haul 😂 It was just entirely too stressful!

boddagettaboddagetta

This screams “I have never worked a delivery job, but feel entitled to complain about delivery workers.”

code39

Tell me you don't know the meaning of "entitled" without actually telling me you don't know the meaning . Seriously, you're the second person I've seen call me entitled. So me expecting someone to do the job they were hired to do is entitled? Then I guess every person sitting at the cheesecake factory right now is entitled because they expect to be brought the food they ordered. Or everyone that has had any interactions with anyone at a place of business is entitled. Me expecting the FedEx driver to make even the smallest attempt to actually get my package to me is not being entitled. If I told him to come back at a certain time or under certain conditions, then that would be entitled. But to not even get out of the truck, and lie to me, all while making other deliveries in the complex is just lazy. I have worked a delivery job before l and with all the jobs I have worked throughout my life I haven't been lazy or sucked at the job. If you read through the comments you will see laziness is a common theme with FedEx drivers.

dqmiumau

No the private contractors for fed ex don't pay them enough, it's per day pay so whatever the business contact set their cubic feet per day in their truck is how long their day will be, and if they don't get to one or two (because the business contact- who gets paid more to just mess up people's days) it's usually because the BC put a stop on someone's route that doesn't belong to them and is an hour there and an hour back from the rest of their route. Also, in Alabama dogs are unleashed or just let out in the yards and they attack them. It's not worth it lol. Anyway, they do a lot more physical labor than your entitled little reddit ass does

code39

I'm a former pipeliner, so I am well aware of physical labor, and I have done more of it than you can imagine.
