Dennis could murder Frank and weasel his money out of the will (0 for dee, obvy).
He leaves him alive because he loves the feeling of benevolently allowing Frank to think he has power. Allowing them all to live.
They should pull a Succession and have a name debatably underlined or crossed out in his will. “SURE AS SHIT DOESNT SAY DEANDRA THE FAT FLIGHTLESS BIRD!” And Mac being upset he’s the only one not named on the will at all.
Dennis just has more common sense than the rest. Dee had common sense in the beginning but sank down to the level of the others after a while. Frank's loaded so he doesn't need common sense. He's got business sense
Even though the show’s most memorable line (“the implication”) comes from psycho Dennis, I prefer him being the straight man. And I think Charlie is my second favorite straight man, but maybe that’s because it’s so rare.
In later seasons I think he does, Dee will also be the “more reasonable” one quite often as well. In earlier seasons it often seemed to be Mac but his character has changed a lot
That’s essentially how I used to describe it to people but I’d say “they’re all idiots and every episode someone else is the smart one but sometimes no one is the smart one.”
I feel like charlie plays it the least but when he does it it's amazing.
Like in the episode with the health inspector. Or when he got with that rich unladylike slut to make the waitress jealous
The episode Charlie Work makes me appreciate that the most, because normally Charlie is played as the Wild Card, but in that episode he is very much the "straight man" and you really notice how "Yeah, they're all as insane as eachother" lmao
There are video compilations of the different characters “playing the straight man”. Its really funny finding a video titled “Mac plays the straight man”
Nah, it’s probably more like this:
https://preview.redd.it/ju69bj69s39d1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7399fb3282622af69cf0194e83f18a88102ee4ed
I'm glad you said this. I think Dee was meant to be the voice of reason in the beginning - a foil for the lunacy of the others. But Charlie, over time, stands out as the most well adjusted (nod to "the Gang Gets Analyzed") member of the gang. His illiteracy, glue/paint huffing, sunscreen drinking, and alcohol abuse mask a personality that is surprisingly intelligent with respect to his emotions and social acumen. Best displayed in Charlie Kelly: King of Rats.
Probably at a certain point but the first season shows little of her own immaturity and narcissism relative to the others. She stands out as the one whose lines are what a "normal well-adjusted person" would say as opposed to the arrested development of the others.
If I recall correctly, Kaitlin Olson's problem with how Dee was written was that she was basically used as an exposure tool for the flow of the episodes and the shenanigans of the Gang. So she wanted to be in the shenanigans opposed to being an outsider who just served as a device to explain the narratives
They're modeled after the 3 Stooges:
Dennis is Moe, the bully who sees himself as the leader.
Charlie is Curly, the naturally funny one takes the bully's abuse.
Mac is Shemp, the other naturally funny one who takes the bully's abuse.
Dee is Larry, the weird oddball who looks like a bird that everyone abuses.
Frank is Danny deVito, who wasn't in the 3 Stooges, but would have automatically have made them 10x better.
I'd actually say Dee is Curly since she has the superior physical comedy of the cast, and is way more naturally funny than Mac. Rob always admits he's the least natural comedian of the cast.
I'd have Mac as Larry and Charlie as Shemp, but Dee is my favorite so I'm biased. And Kaitlin's physical comedy is the closest of the cast to Curly and that was such a dominating trait to Curly's comedy. I get that the bird joke is the easy karma, but really she's more comparable to Curly or Shemp than Larry imo. I'm a Stooges and Sunny die hard, so I take it a little seriously.
I would love an arc where they show Frank being a dispatcher in the 80s. They can just show the clips & actions of Louie and it won't be a bit out of the place.
Frank is the Brains and the Bank
Dennis is the wild card / love interest
Charlie is the Rock / Foundation that holds everything together
Dee is the Muscle / Goon
Mac is the Useless Chick
Frank - The disgusting animal / The money
Dennis - The handsome companion / hoor
Dee - The empowered woman who gives poor ratings to men / the whore who bangs everybody
Charlie - The full on rapist (Africans, dyslexics, children, etc.)
Mac - Just their gay guy now
Mac seems like the brains, but don’t confuse his bossiness for brains.
Frank raised dee and Dennis but he didn’t sire them. He might’ve sired Charlie but we don’t know. But we brought the blood bucket so you can test it.
So Mac always felt like the odd one out, y’know. I mean, you know.
Dennis is the leader of the gang because it’s the only place he could actually lead.
Mac is Dennis’s own personal sycophant.
Charlie is the court jester.
Dee is the unwelcome guest that has just been clinging on for so long that even if they originally didn’t want her there she is a there now and a free punching bag.
Frank is the cash behind the operation, living out his midlife crisis.
Frank is the rich one, Mac is the gay one, Charlie is the weird one that fails successfully, Dee is the delusional one and Dennis is their resident sociopath
Mac is dumb but he thinks he's awesome. Frank knows he's in his third act and is just here to hustle and party. Dennis is a psycho and like a lot of psychos he chooses the path of least resistance so he can inflate his ego and spend more time indulging himself. Dee waivers between thinking she can find a way out of her situation, trying to gain the respect of the other gang members, and totally giving up. Charlie is really dumb and hasn't really given much thought to the notion that he could be doing more than killing rats with a baseball bat in a Philadelphia dive bar.
Mac is the sheriff of Paddy’s
Dee is the woman of Paddy’s
Frank is the bankroll of Paddy’s
Charlie is the janitor of Paddy’s
Dennis is the killer outside of Paddy’s
I think Danny DeVito should play his character 'Louie DePalma' from TAXI in an episode of SUNNY. Louie would wander into Paddy's Pub one day and the gang would think he's Frank. Louie gets fed up with all the crap the gang gives him, curses them out, breaks stuff and leaves. Frank comes in and wonders why everyone's mad at him now. Only Charlie realizes Frank has an evil doppelganger. Well... more evil.
They're a broken pane of glass and their sharp parts happen to fit together.
Mostly.
There's a lot of pieces missing and everyone that tries to help just gets cut.
Frank is obviously the looks. I'm pretty sure he's pulled more than all the others throughout the series so really...
Dee is the bird.
Charlie is the muscle. He actually can get pretty intense.
Mac is the dumb girl.
Dennis is the true wild card.
If we’re going scooby doo:
Charlie is Shaggy. Good comic relief, sometimes very sensible
Frank is Scooby, obviously
Dee is Velma. She seems to consistently be the smartest
Dennis is Fred. He’s generally the leader, and he’s really into traps.
Mac is Daphne. The useless chick.
Dennis is the leader/wild card, macs his sidekick/wild card, franks the bankroller/wild card and charlie and dee are both wild cards
I guess the true dynamic is if you played a card game where every card is wild
Charlie is the foundation and quite happy with this
Dennis is the pinnacle but subconsciously knows this can only apply within the gang
Mac strives to impress Dennis but is deep down far more comfortable in the gutter with Charlie so flips between the two
Frank is fringe class
Dee nosed in
Ive discovered every successful sitcom follows a basic formula:
- Wildcard (charlie, kramer, phoebe, old people, pets)
- Strong but also weak out of touch female (dee, Elaine, Rachel/monica)
- Generational comedy (frank, old people, Raymond's parents)
- infinite money (frank, kramer/Jerry, Monica's apartment)
- Narcissistic behavior (dennis, george, Ross, children)
- relationship/sexual tension (mac/dennis, Jerry/elaine, Rachel/ross)
They must always be close to like learning the error of their ways, but thr next episode they need to go back to being a narcissist.
But Mac does generate an enormous amount of power.
The speed of the bottom tells the top how much power to apply. But I imagine there's a great deal of switching back and forth
Whoever needs to be in charge for the plot is in charge, but is horrible at it/ the others don't listen. None of them have a clear amount of love or respect for each other, except kind of Charlie and Frank. Charlie is the grunt, Dee is the punching bag, Frank is the bank roll, Dennis and Mac both take turns thinking they're in charge, but neither one is.
They hate each other until they find something to hate on together, at which point they hate each other a little less in order to attack the thing they have more. Example, the shusher is this exactly.
Dennis is the psycho, the true conductor of the freight train
Frank lets him run the show. He could close the purse if he wanted.
Frank lacks the creativity of the golden god.
He chugs dick
He doesn’t chug dick, that’s homophobic
Ok Mac, Chuga choo choo
Frank is a financier. He sees insanity, he bankrolls the insanity. He's got spots!
*warthog noises intensify*
Dennis could murder Frank and weasel his money out of the will (0 for dee, obvy). He leaves him alive because he loves the feeling of benevolently allowing Frank to think he has power. Allowing them all to live.
Honestly though would Frank even have them in his will?
I think the reason Dennis not actively seeking to kill Frank because he thinks Frank more useful alive than dead
Dennis could work around that. Qt the very least steal his assets. Dennis probably already has the will amended. He's that good
He probably hasn't updated the will in 20 years.
They should pull a Succession and have a name debatably underlined or crossed out in his will. “SURE AS SHIT DOESNT SAY DEANDRA THE FAT FLIGHTLESS BIRD!” And Mac being upset he’s the only one not named on the will at all.
Yea see I think that’s a wash, now hear me out tank will have a gun and a back up as well
That has when because way too much too tank will have gun.
Jesus Christ Charliee your illiteracy is really getting bad
🥴……😳……Dennis is a bastard man!
Charlie could lead that train. I mean, he knows a lot of people!
Wildcard!
In the podcast it is mentioned that they always have a "straight man" who plays the voice of reason and they take turns with it.
Reason will prevail!
Pickles will prevail!
****PEOPLE WILL DIE****
Pickle party
Oh, interesting. I always thought Dennis played that role more than everyone else. Maybe I just love his “straight man” more.
Dennis just has more common sense than the rest. Dee had common sense in the beginning but sank down to the level of the others after a while. Frank's loaded so he doesn't need common sense. He's got business sense
I thought you meant “loaded” as in high or drunk, which is also true.
Could also describe his guns.
Ahhh he does and he doesn't, he does and he doesn't
I do think Dennis plays the "straight man" most often... Even if misguided 😂
Even though the show’s most memorable line (“the implication”) comes from psycho Dennis, I prefer him being the straight man. And I think Charlie is my second favorite straight man, but maybe that’s because it’s so rare.
Hey, that was Dennis being straight, just logical.
it's pretty common in the later seasons
In later seasons I think he does, Dee will also be the “more reasonable” one quite often as well. In earlier seasons it often seemed to be Mac but his character has changed a lot
If anyone is the straight man of the group it is definitely Mac.
Dennis carries a demeanor if he has the upper hand, otherwise he's just as vulnerable to spiral out like any other gang member
That’s essentially how I used to describe it to people but I’d say “they’re all idiots and every episode someone else is the smart one but sometimes no one is the smart one.”
Imagine an episode where they’re all the smart one 🤔
No one wants to watch 5 well adjusted people run a successful business!
Its really funny finding a video titled “Mac plays the straight man”
Dee is the bird, Mac is the rat, Charlie is the worm, Frank is the cheetah, Dennis is the gazelle.
a beautiful, beautiful gazelle-person edit: damn, really should've popped that shirt off
With the spine of a vetruvian man!
Dennis is the mule. And his mule is SHIT
I am no longer turned on by mules.
Frank is the warthog
Damn dude, you're right. He was the only one I was iffy on and I totally botched it.
Frank is the mantis sometimes
Man-cheetah
Charlie is the Dirt Grub
Ronnie the Rat
This is such a great comment!
Frank is the slug
Like one of those rat kings that forms when a bunch of rat tails get twisted together, truly it is one person with five distinct heads
It's the definition of toxic codependent
Nah, it’s probably more like this: https://preview.redd.it/ju69bj69s39d1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7399fb3282622af69cf0194e83f18a88102ee4ed

Not sure but I think the actress (re-casted) of Dee wanted in the group’s shenanigans and not be the voice of reason
Probably at a certain point but the first season shows little of her own immaturity and narcissism relative to the others. She stands out as the one whose lines are what a "normal well-adjusted person" would say as opposed to the arrested development of the others.
Hey, that's the name of the show! Oh wrong sub.
>Hey, that’s the name of the show! Narrator: It’s not.
Please tell your friends about this show.
If I recall correctly, Kaitlin Olson's problem with how Dee was written was that she was basically used as an exposure tool for the flow of the episodes and the shenanigans of the Gang. So she wanted to be in the shenanigans opposed to being an outsider who just served as a device to explain the narratives
That's a better way to put it, I think you are technically correct, which is the best kind of correct
Now if you'll excuse me, I've grown quite hweareh!
Not to mention song writing!
Frank disgusts me. He disgusts everyone!
And he will never. Ever. Be on that billboard.
But Dee’s hair looks like a wig
*Is* it a wig? I don’t care
Wish I could see the episode this quote was in
sail the high seas! i did last nite, great episode
Frank: 🤨
this is so right
I find it funny that frank gets more action than dennis throughout the show
On screen\*
Swap out Charlie and Dennis and I agree. Dee and Frank are spot on. Mac... Mac really is the useless chick.
Shabooyah! Roll Call!
WILDCARD, BITCHES! Because of the implication
Each one has their own head-cannon of what the dynamic is, that’s what makes them so chaotic as a crew. They’re rarely on the same page lol
They’re all the comic relief
Not Dee. Her timing sucks.
Yea, she didn’t even feel a thing
Not like Mac’s ever had an orgasm 🥴
Holy shit you're late
Dee.....you bitch.
He just said it
I don't even know where to put the laughs
I’m going for gasps
There’s a timing concern..
They should swap her out for Landslide.
They're modeled after the 3 Stooges: Dennis is Moe, the bully who sees himself as the leader. Charlie is Curly, the naturally funny one takes the bully's abuse. Frank Reynolds is Danny DeVito is Louie DePalma.
I would love an arc where they show Frank being a dispatcher in the 80s. They can just show the clips & actions of Louie and it won't be a bit out of the place.
I love this answer, except I think you did Larry Fine dirty just now.
Frank is the Brains and the Bank Dennis is the wild card / love interest Charlie is the Rock / Foundation that holds everything together Dee is the Muscle / Goon Mac is the Useless Chick
The foundation goes at the top
bottom of the funnel, or top of the pyramid
But a power bottom of course
Who sent the goon?
Frank - The disgusting animal / The money Dennis - The handsome companion / hoor Dee - The empowered woman who gives poor ratings to men / the whore who bangs everybody Charlie - The full on rapist (Africans, dyslexics, children, etc.) Mac - Just their gay guy now
*Dee - The sad sluttly lonely whore.
This is the right answer.
Okay, here's the deal, guys: from now on, I'm not gonna ask you guys any more questions.. at all...
Charlie is the dirty one Mac is the gay one Dee is the bird lady Frank is the troll man Dennis is the golden god
Frank is also the warthog, which i think is important to remember
I'M GONNA DESTROY YOU ALL!
Frank is the cash behind the operation, living out his midlife crisis.
midlife? shit, the other members of the gang are almost too old for that even
Frank is the rich one, Mac is the gay one, Charlie is the weird one that fails successfully, Dee is the delusional one and Dennis is their resident sociopath
I feel like you don’t even watch the show!
Charlie’s thing was pretty rare but when it happens it’s pretty funny. Everything else tho is accurate
Ask one of the other ones. The dirty one....or the gay one.
dennis is the id, dee is the physical comedy, charlie is the tramp, mac is the straight (gay) man, frank is the wick that igintes them all
Mac is dumb but he thinks he's awesome. Mac is the sheriff of Paddy’s Dee is the woman of Paddy’s Frank is the bankroll of Paddy’s Charlie is the janitor of Paddy’s Dennis is the killer outside of Paddy’s
Your paragon is failing us.
Chaos. Just chaos.
Well... more evil.
Out of the two, Frank HAS to be the evil one. Louis was a greedy asshole but he never threw anyone into the soup.
They're a broken pane of glass and their sharp parts happen to fit together. Mostly. There's a lot of pieces missing and everyone that tries to help just gets cut.
Co-dependent sociopaths led by Frank or Dennis depending on who they're trying to screw over.
Frank is obviously the looks. I'm pretty sure he's pulled more than all the others throughout the series so really... Dee is the bird. Charlie is the muscle. He actually can get pretty intense. Mac is the dumb girl. Dennis is the true wild card.
They are “nonsense” embodied. Each one with moments of clarity, and moments of insanity. You can’t just put nonsense outside.
Dennis - John, Charlie - Paul, Mac - George, Dee - Ringo, Frank - Yoko
If we’re going scooby doo: Charlie is Shaggy. Good comic relief, sometimes very sensible Frank is Scooby, obviously Dee is Velma. She seems to consistently be the smartest Dennis is Fred. He’s generally the leader, and he’s really into traps. Mac is Daphne. The useless chick.
Well Mac is the sheriff of Paddy's
They're all dependent on each for many reasons, but Frank mostly cause he's rich.
Frank would be Shawn Stockman Charlie would be Wanya Morris Dennis would be Marc Nelson Mac would be Nathan Morris Dee would be Michael McCary
Chaotic evil
Dennis is the leader/wild card, macs his sidekick/wild card, franks the bankroller/wild card and charlie and dee are both wild cards I guess the true dynamic is if you played a card game where every card is wild
Charlie is the foundation and quite happy with this Dennis is the pinnacle but subconsciously knows this can only apply within the gang Mac strives to impress Dennis but is deep down far more comfortable in the gutter with Charlie so flips between the two Frank is fringe class Dee nosed in

They are all each other’s greatest ally and worst enemy.
- Dennis is The Golden God - Frank is The Trash Man - Charlie is The Wildcard - Mac is The Power Bottom - Dee is The Bird
But Mac does generate an enormous amount of power. The speed of the bottom tells the top how much power to apply. But I imagine there's a great deal of switching back and forth
I haven't even begun to peak. And when I do peak, you'll know. Because I'm gonna peak so hard that everybody in Philadelphia is gonna feel it.
They're all just scared. Their day to day life is mostly fear responses.
If you asked Mac, he’d say he’s the muscle, the brains and the charisma of the bar, making him the de facto leader of the Gang.
AKA Sheriff of Paddy’s
Dysfunction seems to be the only constant for them
Frank - funding/man with the plan/brains Dennis - looks/fixer Mac - muscle Charlie - wildcard Dee - useless chick

Just a bunch of drunk, angry people yelling over each other.
Id say that they operate similarly to a horrific blob with numerous personalities vying for control.

The sunny characters exist as an orgy of traits that come out one by one as needed.
They all have one brain cell that they each take turns with

I didn't say Frank has good business sense.
