I'm guessing it was some kind of mechanical failure and it was out of control

It's not a fishing vessel. It's a bulk carrier, so it's transporting processed fish. On the scale they're operating on, the fishing vessel both catches and processes fish. This vessel is merely transporting.
Right, but its exclusively used for illegal fishing. Its not bringing peoples products over from china to other countries, so this is not the "shipping industry". Its just a way to skirt international regulations for illegal fishermen.
>but its exclusively used for illegal fishing
On this trip, perhaps. Do you know how international maritime, and more specifically ship management and logistics works?
You should really just read the articles in the post I linked to see exactly how these illegal fishing fleets work. This ship is a part of a fleet of ships that is *dedicated to doing this illegal fishing*. Its *all* that they do.
Its a problem thats well known and written about. Its not owned by a shipping company, its owned by a shady illegal fishing company. It never carries anything except fish, and it processes fish onboard. They are called "factory ships" and they are made from shitty old cargo ships.
Also, given you live in seattle and work in a secondary sector industry I would bet money that you don't work in international shipping either.
>I would bet money that you don't work in international shipping either.
How much? I've worked with a lot of major shipping and ship management companies in the area of Maritime regulation, as well as spending time on merchant ships of all classifications.
So kindly fuck off.
That vessel is a bulk carrier, not a processing ship. At the scale of the amount of fish seized, those ships are both fishing vessels and processing plants, so this is simply transporting processed fish back to China, or wherever they sold it.
I'm really curious how this occurred, as that ship should have been under pilotage, and there should have been a tug at the bow as well as the one at the stern with the stern line under tension as they went into that lock/dry dock (can't tell by the video).

How does this happen?

The shipping industry is dirty and lawless. Jesus Christ.
Its an illegal chinese fishing ship, not shipping

The full story doesn't have it completely right.
Crack an egg of knowledge over my head

Momentum and inertia. The boat has more of it.
Wow.
Are the tugs pushing that thing?
I saw that… I don’t think a tug could get it going that fast. My guess is they were trying to stop/slow it down.
I think it was going downhill.
Fell down a water mountains s/

We are on a schedule here. No time for the locks.
I don‘t think that is a lock
Let’s just pretend it is
Not with that attitude.
Unlocked now anyway
Dry dock maybe?
How? Why?
You're good You're good You're good
Well it was kind of hard to see it there… ![gif](giphy|Rhhr8D5mKSX7O)
