Trucks really don't have safety features like you think they do.
They don't feel safe. They're solid steel with no crumple zones. You're on top of something that tends to lean aggressively, so you get tossed around in an accident. The seats don't feel very secure considering they have airbags under them to cushion the ride.
I could go on and on about how unsafe it is to be in the driver's seat of a truck.
I'm pretty sure he meant more, "I'd rather be in a less safe truck's drivers seat than being squashed by 80,000 lbs." I don't care how many safety features an automobile has, it isn't going to save you from that much weight .
I’m surprised if it was that windy that the state transportation board hadn’t called for trailer trucks off the road, they do it when gusts get above a certain level to prevent them from getting blown over.
OP dated it as last weekend, we had some freaky high winds across the entire state of Utah, especially up by the lake and across I80 near the Utah/Nevada border.
We try.
Well, some of us do.
I can tell you this could have been avoided with a little bit of pre-trip planning. From the way he went up he's either empty or loaded fairly light. Also his trailer wheels are up near the front when they should be towards the back in windy conditions. I have an app on my phone called Windy that for $20/yr (there's a free version) lets me see live wind and wind gust updates including speed and direction. Depending on how heavy I'm loaded I can look at the app and determine if it's safe to drive. If it's a no-go, I can call my office and tell them I'm shutting down until it's safe and I'll find a place to park until then and they won't argue. They'd rather me arrive safely than to try and be a hero.
I remember getting thrown by a gust of wind from the slow lane all the way across to the inside shoulder on I80 in Nebraska, and I was in a Jetta. Wyoming isn't much better.
The gusts may have started around that time and too quickly for a closure to go out.
The truck driver handled it well at least. It may have scared him but he took the right action.
That flag on the left side is full sail the entire length of this video. I don't know what a gust is and I don't live anywhere remotely plainsy, but that seemed like some consistent heavy wind. But everything turned out a-ok!
Yes you can, in valley's like this there are usually signs stating to stay in a certain lane so if one does tip it doesn't hit someone. In this case the truck driver probably should've been in the left lane, they knew it was windy.
Of course reddit will continue to be ignorant as fuck and downvote anything with actual logic
It’s fortunate you both came out of this completely safe and unharmed, but I don’t see how this near disaster makes anyone in this video an idiot. You did well for braking off the situation happening and the truck driver did well for regaining control of it.
OP is self-reporting for camping in the left lane lol
Edit: this sub’s strong suit isn’t jokes.
Double edit: all the downvoters are a bunch of left lane camping douche bags! Cheers to your shitty driving!
I recognize that stretch near Paragonah because I'm on I-15 a lot in my semi. The wind can get really hideous around there and then Cedar City.
At least he managed to keep it upright.
I highly doubt he even saw that dust devil even coming. Driving out in the desert it's pretty easy to miss them, especially if there's half a dozen in your view at all times. This one appears to be very clear for how much force it had.
Yep! That’ll do it. Glad you’re okay!
I was driving from Phoenix to San Clemente about 20+ years ago. It was raining and there was some gusting wind. Coming up on a long trailer I was getting ready to pass and it was blown straight over into the left lane by a good four feet. The whole truck including the cab.
He got back in the right lane quickly enough, yet I throttled back and waited until i felt the potential was gone, passed and hauled ass.
That said, I’ve been extra cautious in passing rigs by checking the winds, plus I get around them as quickly as possible.
LOL! I knew exactly what was going to happen when I saw that dustdevil. Same happened to me many years ago driving in Colorado, only the tipping wasn't quite as extreme. I still get a little anxious passing a semi on any open plain.
I think they're just trying to repeat one of this sub's default comments without having any real understanding of how or why we are always saying that.

Trucks suck in cross wind. But ya Cant fault anyone, really.
Exactly, the driver of the cam car was scared. Then imagine how the truck driver felt. Time for a change of underwear all around.
I'd still rather be in a truck falling on my side than in a car getting crushed by a truck

Nah, that trailer is empty, nowhere near 80000lb. If it was fully loaded it probably wouldn’t get thrown around by the wind so easily.
No, but you can stop and maneuver and accelerate like you don't have 80,000 lbs behind you.
I’ve driven 26’ box trucks and the seat situation is the same as semis and I still would rather be driving the semi
[удалено]
smart man. didn’t know those trailers had hydraulic control in the rear axles to pull off that kind of maneuver.
Agreed! More like a "Oh shit, we just dodged a bullet" there moment.
This pair is on me
Stay there, I'll go get the wet wipes for you.

Surprisingly Gusty day i guess.
OP dated it as last weekend, we had some freaky high winds across the entire state of Utah, especially up by the lake and across I80 near the Utah/Nevada border.
Yep . Thats what i figured, too. I80 gets closed all the time for wind. Seems like trucks tip quite often, too.
There were three near me on Friday. One near the Saltair Palace on 80 and two more further west near the Cargill plant.
Yeesh. I don’t drive truck. But ive got friends who do. I hear about their crazy shit all the time. Yall are a different breed. Props to ya

In the southwest summer, monsoon winds are a common occurrence.
There was. No load and you could see the wind coming from the side.
Cross wind or falling asleep? It's the not the most exciting job, just the longest.

regained control and pulled over immediately (whether to change pants or see if the wind calmed down or check for damages isn't important).
Probably to check for damage.
The wind is the idiot. Stupid wind...
No idiots here. It is an interesting video.
High wind areas around me have signs that light up warning truckers to pull over
maybe it's just a reminder of how idiotic the human race as a whole is to invent something as crazy as giant metal chariots of power

I think your strong suit isn't jokes
Wait, so... is it a joke or not? Your two edits contradict.
It started as a joke, but then people downvoted the hell out of it so I said fuck it and embraced it. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
First off they were literally attempting to pass in the video. Second it’s not a law in every state to keep right unless passing.

Yep, I’d be taking bites outta the seat lol
I laughed way harder than I should reading this
Funny, my ass would have changed the color of my underwear.
I recognize that stretch near Paragonah because I'm on I-15 a lot in my semi. The wind can get really hideous around there and then Cedar City. At least he managed to keep it upright.
i was trying to figure out which part of utah that was! but yeah, southern utah is always exceptionally more windy than northern utah for some reason.
Are those the bookcliffs?
this is the 90mph speed limit section, right? edit: nope. this is north of cedar city, that part is south
So who exactly is the idiot here?
OP, for posting it to this sub
Technically the truck driver if he knowingly drove into high winds with an empty or lightly loaded trailer, as appears to be the case here.
I highly doubt he even saw that dust devil even coming. Driving out in the desert it's pretty easy to miss them, especially if there's half a dozen in your view at all times. This one appears to be very clear for how much force it had.
That makes sense. I’m assuming the smart choice would’ve been to pull over at a stop and wait for the winds to calm down
Good luck finding a stop out in places like this. If too bad you could pull off and try to face truck in direction of wind.
Who's supposed to be the idiot?
The earth
Wind!
And fire!!!
Well, that’s a new fear unlocked.
Well on the plus side you can definitely feel when it's windy out in almost any car and then you know to take extra precaution.
That's a sphincter factor of about 8.5!!!
Drive a bus and had that happen guarantee he was shitting himself equally or more then you were
You can see the dust being swept/kicked up to the right. Can tell a nice gust was inbound. Scary, indeed.
It would be a good idea to remove all that stuff from your dashboard -- the reflection is impairing your field of view somewhat.
I’d rather my cab tip in a lorry I’m driving than have the whole thing crush me to death tbf.
Who's the idiot?
2 for flinching
Scary stuff but no idiot in cars here.
![gif](giphy|Gnh8nS5DgqyZy)
NOT TODAY FINAL DESTINATION! GTFO WITH THAT ISH!
What the hay
I actually exclaimed out loud. Definitely would have pulled over to recoup. Scary.
that's what trucks do when they have to fart
winds on those open plains are no joke
No idiots spotted
Good god. Butt puckers all around. Initially, I thought the driver fell asleep, drifted out of lane, then recovered, before I read the comments
Well, thats a new pair of pants.
No lie I would’ve pissed myself 🤦🏾♂️
Truck said you ain't passing me
Wholly smokes!! Close one!
That's my Mom's fear with semis any time she's next to one, even if it's not windy.
100% he pulled over to change his drawers. Lol that trailers clearly empty..
If it scared the shit out of you, imagine the semi driver!!!!!
I've seen people do some sketchy shit to prevent people from passing, but that's a new one!! /s
I bet you'll think twice every time you go to pass one of these trucks from now on.... Shit, after seeing this, I know I will! lol
I know it's the wind but it looked like trick-driving.
Good reaction time OP.
He probably shit his pants also.
Yet another reason to never sit next to a truck on a highway.
OP was passing…
It was too well timed. That trucker did that on purpose to mess with you. Pretty cool you got to meet an air bender though.
Dang, that truck must have seen a mouse on the side of the road.
It’s possible that the trailer loaded right. Looks to be leaning a bit left at the beginning
Scary shit!! I was waiting for a car to appear out of nowhere and try to cut you off last second
![gif](giphy|iY0gKqDowIzVG39wG9|downsized)
This is my biggest fear, honestly.
Yep, that would've done it!
Good thing i was on the toilet when i saw this
Gee I don’t know why you would be scared???? 🤪
Thou shalt not pass!
I flinched watching this on my phone, jesus christ
Truck was like SIKE
Shit that made my nuts go up my stomach . I can’t imagine their reaction
Man, my ass would have puckered
I hope you were wearing your brown pants
Scared the shit out of me just watching. I wasn’t expecting that!!
Good defense driving. Good on you
LOL! I knew exactly what was going to happen when I saw that dustdevil. Same happened to me many years ago driving in Colorado, only the tipping wasn't quite as extreme. I still get a little anxious passing a semi on any open plain.
I just tried to swerve my phone watching this
how is this idiots in cars?
Good thing you've got those tissues right there! Pants; solved.
Try being the driver that almost tipped. You got really lucky and I'm glad you reconsidered passing.
My grandma's boss and his wife were killed back in the 70s when a truck blew over on top of them like this. So glad no one was hurt here!
Woahhhhhhhhh!!! Dude me too! I would have pissed my pants with what would have been my likely wimpy bladder. Great recovery!
Ooft
Really wish this had sound lol. Glad it didn’t tip though!!
Clear off your dashboard!
Me too!!
Reminds me of the shark that bucked at the diver.
Syke!!!
psych
Sick
Move from left lane
