True story. My wife got in a car accident. First thing the guy said was it was her fault. Even though he had the stop sign, she had right of way, and he had a blind corner, and he stopped in the middle of the road when he noticed her, and it was winter, and she was driving 20 under the speed limit because it was icy.... My wife didn't say a word to him other than asking to trade insurance information and drivers license.
When she called me I came racing over to pick her up and still in that time he wouldn't stop talking and said later that it will probably be 60/40, mostly her fault though.
Insurance put him 100% at fault.
No dash cam. But thankfully, the police came. Took pictures, measured skid marks, analyzed impact locations and damage severity, compared stories, and found him to be a complete dolt.
It's amazing just how vocal the guilty are. It's almost like they try to make up for something.

A dashcam is on our wishlist this year for sure. Seeing all the rear end videos or the "he ran the red light and hit me!" lie videos... Just crazy to see how people act, and how they think they were in the right. What's most worrisome is that they would probably get away with most of it too, if it weren't for those meddling dash cams!

This is how to act at a traffic accident. Don't admit fault because you may not be even.uf you think you are, but also don't go screaming at the other person either. This can only lead to bad things up to an including getting physicalwirh the other driver. Let the cops come and analyze the incident. If you don't agree take it up with your insurance.
They are vocal because they've learned early on they aren't very intelligent. So they developed the habit to talk loud and talk often, including talking over people, as a way to "win" any disagreement. I see it all the time here in Florida. Those I meet with no formal education or job credentials that would indicate average intelligence, they are consistently trying to be the loudest in the room.
One time a guy T boned my mom and my baby sister in our new SUV. Guy ran a red light and hit them so hard the doors on that side wouldn’t open.
I was nearby so got their fairly quick after my mom told me the guy was screaming at them and blaming her.
Cops got there a few seconds after me and his attitude changed completely. It was a fully grown man and I was early 20s at the time.

I doubt it’s even that—there’s just no incentive to take responsibility. Like yeah you could just say my bad and tell the officers that it was your fault then have your insurance pay up and then suffer the consequences because you’re 100% on the hook or you can deny deny deny, be a pain in the ass, drag it out and there might be a slim chance you get away or at the very least drag out the process and make the person you hit suffer a bit longer in the meantime.
Oh god... this reminded me of an accident I was in back in 2015. An old lady crashed into me and she took the blame (as she should, since I did NOTHING wrong). But her insurance company would not accept this and tried to fight my claim. This went on for 15 months. My insurance company also went against me, just wanted me to accept the blame and move on. I stod on my ground and fought back against two insurance companies. It was so bizare, when you think you had your insurance company in your back and the written statement of the other driver etc. They tried to claim shared blame after 3-4 months. I rejected it. After 12 months I got a letter saying this were going to be solved by arbitration. So after 15 months I got a 50+ pages of documents saying I won. Waste of time and money... The poor lady who hit me didn't know anything until she got called to meet up at the place of the incident to tell her story.

Well done! Had a big argument with my own insurance company when I was hit by another of their drivers (who tried to undertake me on a single carriageway road that wasn't wide enough for two cars abreast. And this was in a line of traffic during a diversion caused by what I later found out was a fatal accident.) INsurance company insisted it was 50:50, and that I could and should have avoided the contact (which would have meant veering into oncoming traffic!)
In the end, as they called it 50:50 I got half of my excess back, and for the remaing £200 or so it wasn't worth my time fighting it, but yeah, I changed insurance company too.
Exactly this. Every insurance card I've ever had even clearly reminds you that in the case of an accident, you should never claim responsibility or fault, even if your think you were at fault.
Don't ever admit fault. Even an innocuous "I'M SO SORRY! ARE YOU OK?" can be used against you. Especially if there's a dashcam involved. Every accident I've been in, and that's not many, my first questions are always "Is everyone alright? Nobody bleeding? Nobody stuck in the car?".
The incentive is to not be a POS and act like an adult and own up to your mistake but I get alot of people literally have no character standards for themselves
Its so easy too. One time a driver was being a bit of a dick tailgating me. I responded by also being a dick...when the lane split into 2 and I knew he was going to fly by me, I edged over into the left lane a bit to fuck with him and he clipped me and broke my rear driver side taillight. After we both pulled over I got out and was just like "WHAT THE FUCK DUDE" and he responded with "bro we both did the same shit" like referring to how we were both asshole drivers in this situation and I immediately deflated and dropped my pissed off act and was like "...yeahhh...you're right" and we talked it out and he gave me some cash so I wouldn't report it (he was clearly a drug dealer lol) and we both went on our way.
Well yeah, when you drive like a complete dip shit and have zero spatial awareness everything seems to come out of nowhere. People like her should have their license revoked. They're only a danger to themselves and everyone around them. Sorry OP

I really do think when something is so egregious like this, and they claim no fault, they should lose their license for some amount of time.
My husband had a subordinate who was in this exact situation on a 10-day-old Harley. Dude had enough time to make a decision, and judged that hitting her and launching over the hood (55mph zone) would be really bad, so he dropped the motorcycle and slid into her bike first. Broke both his leg and his collarbone (so no crutches, hello motorized wheelchair) but survived, so it was a win.
The bike was new, he wasn't a new rider - he was 40 and had a motorcycle endorsement on his license and was wearing proper PPE, so no road rash, just the broken bones from the collision.
I actually have DashCam footage of something very similar. Hard to describe scenario, but a car did a u-turn, essentially like this car was doing and the guy dumped his bike from too much front brake, and slid under the car. I was coming other direction and DashCam got it all.
Saved him a lot of heartache with insurance, because you know “the motorcycle was speeding” was where they were going with it.
Predicting and reading body language is huge on a bike.
The best advice I got shortly before buying my bike was "imagine that half of the cars on the road can't see you, and the other half are actively trying to kill you".

As a biker, you're right. Over the years I've become intimately aware of how drivers are acting coming up to them. I'm about 80% accurate on noticing people with a phone in hand from a hundred yards away. I can tell when people are going to change lanes about three seconds before they start. I've learned to figure out what people will do before they do it, but because my life depends on it, I've learned to always assume they'll do something stupid even if I have no indication to believe it otherwise.
And that's why I will never get a bike, no matter how cool it sounds and may be. That sounds so fucking stressful and like I would be a nervous wreck the entire time outside of back country roads.
My father got himself a motorcycle and had it for about a month when he had to take it down and under a truck rather than run into the truck that ran a stop sign. My mother said that with 4 kids aged 5 and under, he could have the motorcycle or he could have a family. He sold the bike and bought a VW Karmann Ghia. Which I later drove in HS because I was the lightest one with a license and the floor was almost rusted through. Yeah, that gave me the warm and fuzzies.
Here I was thinking he is a dipshit who doesn't know how to ride but now I see he is some kind of hero with the skills of a ninja! So lucky to get away with only several broken bones - he might have lost several nanometres of brake pad otherwise
The military can take away your driving privileges on base with a snap of a commander's finger which with this dashcam footage would be pretty easy to justify.
Though I'm not actually sure if you're allowed to have dash cams on bases for OPSEC reasons...

Some douche bag hit my driver’s side mirror today when my roommate went to get gas down the street. She said he was apologizing to her initially because it was his fault. Then the cops show up, dude tries to claim it wasn’t his fault. She said he told the cop, “it was a classic case of 2 people getting too close and hitting mirrors.” Didn’t know that was considered a thing, old man. GOT YOU ON CAMERA BITCH!!!

I recently had a guy blow a red light while traffic in all other lanes around him was stopped, bounce off the car with the green light that pulled into the intersection, and hit me head on as I was sitting in my stationary car waiting for the light to go green.
He told both the cops and his insurance that he had a very clear green light and the other car pulled out in front of him.
I emailed his insurance guy my dashcam video while I was on the phone with him and my insurance called me literally three minutes after I got off the phone to tell me they were taking full fault for the accident.
The fucking clown was even going around at the scene like "I had a green light, he pulled out in front of me right?" to he people trying to help the old dude he tboned and nearly killed, after I'd already told him he blew the red light and that I had it on my dashcam.
I had an old lady hit me while she was in the right turn lane…partially over the line…while I had a green light & was traveling straight. I pulled over in a lot right where it happened, while she started driving away, then reversed on the shoulder, & finally came to check out *her* car. She then comes at me & says “You came barreling out of nowhere!” I told her I was driving the speed limit (45), while traveling through an intersection, just like all the other cars in front, next to, & behind me were, with a green light. I was 20, so she desperately wanted to make me feel like a dumb kid. This was 20yrs ago & I will never forget that dumb shit.
I knew this one girl in highschool. She had just gotten her G2 ( licence to drive by yourself here) and about a week later was driving home. As she's coming down the street to her house, this older lady throws her car in reverse, and slams her foot down on the gas, backing straight into the passenger side of this girl. She hit her so hard, and stayed on the gas long enough to push this teenagers car all the way up against the curb on the other side of the street. The old nag then gets out, looks at the girl, and says "you teenage drivers all drive like fucking morons, this is your fault". The woman fought it every step of the way trying to come up with every possible excuse she could to try and blame the 17 year old.

About 8yrs ago I was at work (grocery store) chatting with a few regular customers, when we all hear what honestly sounded like an explosion. I take a few steps forward to check the front end, & just as I do I see the entire smoothie dept sliding across the floor & into the registers…as the poor girl who was working it was flying in the air. Turns out this older lady “got mixed up between the gas & breaks” & smashed into our brick store going roughly 45mph (which I still don’t understand bc the lot at that store was pretty tiny). I’ve seen news reports of that kind of stuff happening, but holy shit is it a terrifying thing to experience it close up. I feel like people need to be tested a little more rigorously as we age when it comes to driver’s licenses.
one of my relatives died this way, on mother's day. An elderly person mixed up the pedals and drove into a strip mall and pinned her against the store, after she pushed her daughter out of the way.
This happens almost every day at my gym. The entrance is at a 4-way intersection and the through traffic doesn’t have stop signs. Old people will pull right out in front of you assuming you’re going to stop for your imaginary sign.
Heard an insurance adjuster tell stories about things people wrote on there claims. My favorite was someone who said something like “driving along when the tree jumped in front of me”.

Protip, never, ever tell the other driver you have them on camera. Let them make all their wild claims all the way to court, then let them get soaked by pulling out the dash cam footage.
there are situations when telling them you have a dash cam is better. Like when you don't have a dash cam and they are smugly telling you its just your word against theirs once the cops arrive.
Tell them you have one, watch them try to sweet talk their way out of a ticket instead of lie.
When I used to work with auto accidents, those words are a sign that the person wasn't paying attention. Unfortunately matter doesn't materialize out of nowhere. Not yet at least.
Remember to record every charge and bill. Their insurance company will pay for it.
Medical bills, new car, miss days of work, and any other expenses from the incident can be sued for and gotten. Plus a bit more for extra that covers attorney fees and gives you a bit for safety net.
My friend recently got hit by a car while riding his longboard, in the walk zone of an intersection while the walk sign was lit. Crushed his foot. Initially the settlement was looking like ~$5 million. Now his foot is sending clots up his leg, requiring emergency surgery. Settlement looking like $22 million now. Always keep your receipts.

Depends on the circumstances I think. Generally I'd agree with you, as even the chance of one of those buggers breaking free and going to my heart is enough stress to terrify me into a heart attack on its own, but my dad has one right now after a foot surgery and weirdly nobody seems to be very concerned at all. The doc just threw some meds at him and said they'll see him again in like a month or two and do another ultrasound then or something. So idk... I'd probably still just take the 5 million but my dad would probably go big or go home lol
Yeah, DVTs cam be common following injuries and/or major surgeries, but if caught early, usually can be medically managed with blood thinners, which is likely what your dad got.
Not much more can or should be done because drastic measures could likely make things worse (read, surgery itself increases risk of DVT), but on the bright side, blood thinners are usually very effective at keeping off those clots and therefore preventing something like that hitting your heart or lungs.
Who would pay for this situation? Drivers insurance up until copay? I can't imagine someone driving uninsured and then hit with a $22mil lawsuit. That's 100% bankruptcy territory.
I have no clue honestly. Those numbers are the damages being sought, not necessarily what the final payout will be, and I doubt it'll be in one lump sum. Likely the driver and car owner will both have their wages garnished for the rest of their lives, after their insurance pays out part and drops them like a hand grenade.
That's right but hopefully the driver has some underinsured motorist coverage. The attorney is going to take 1/3 of any settlement funds plus case expenses...and the health insurance company will also likely take a cut.
If you haven’t already, you should talk to your lawyer about this post. My lawyer was adamant to avoid any conversations and posts on social media (even when the evidence is clear). Just a thought.

Fair assessment. Honestly, I couldn't get a read one way or the other what they were doing. They weren't driving in a way that would inform other drivers of their intentions. No blinker and minimal "body language." I always assume that those are signs that a person doesn't plan ahead and doesn't pay much attention.
Saved me some change once - someone went into the back of me and legit claimed i stopped dead in the road and reversed into them.

I live in Vegas and my Nexar died after 2 summers by my current one has been running strong for 3 summers already. I have the Vantrue N4. But the other thing I’ve found to help is when you put your windshield protector, don’t put it behind the dashcam. The heat that gets trapped in there intensifies and can melt the dashcam faster. What I do now is tuck the windshield protector under the dash cam and so far so good.
I've got ceramic window tint on my windshield. It blocks all the UV rays and cuts down the temp in the car significantly, despite being so light of a tint that you can't tell it's there. No idea how much that helps the dashcam!
I've got three in Phoenix that have survived surface parking in the office parking lot at 115F. All are random ass brands with instructions in Chinese, so you have my sympathies for your bad luck but you should probably try again.

Car accidents on base are already such a circus, because they are just so uncommon. The base cops often have no idea who even needs to be notified, other than their boss.
In seven years, I saw 8 accidents one base. 3 were idiots who tried to flee the city cops by driving onto a military base (absolute worst option). 5 were dependas who didn't pay attention and rear-ended people during Retreat, when everyone has to stop.
The cops where horrible! Tried grabbing the dash cam from my windshield, it had a SD card. Was more concerned why I was on base as a civilian then the actual accident, I was dropping off my roommate. The EMT shut the door in their face saying I had to go to the hospital.
The police listed me at fault, until my lawyer provided her insurance the video while we where on the phone with them because we wanted to hear what they had to say first.
It's not explicitly that dashcams aren't allowed. It's just that there are many locations where photo/video are not allowed. Dashcams are definitely a challenge, and I wouldn't be surprised if a local policy banned them.
They’re explicitly not allowed, at least in army bases, if you do ACP guard, you go to a class where they tell you your responsibilities and one of them is to tell people with dash cam that they’re not allowed on post.

I remember being so shocked when I found out that there were states where the cops were in charge of assigning fault. Seems pretty much like horseshit to me. Even if they saw the accident themselves in real time, they should be witnesses at best.
At the end of the duty day (around 5 or 6pm), "Retreat" will play over the base-wide loud speakers, followed by the National Anthem. Everything on base stops during that time. If driving, you're supposed to park. Some branches require you to get out of your car. If you are out of the car, service members face the nearest flag and salute. Similar thing takes place at the beginning of the day around 6am for Reville.

Couple months ago I was driving out of one way parking lot. Mind you i was going slow. All of sudden, boom, some lady in nissan hit me. If i rememeber correctly first thing out of her mouth when i went out to check if everything’s ok was “why you speeding through the parking lot?” She said this adamantly to me, and to the mall security. We ended up deciding the damage was minor enough to just simply fix it on our own. We AGREED to this before leaving the parking lot. Also, the mall security and an accident police witnessed it - we didn’t file an accident report.
Later in the day I got a call from her insurance saying she claimed the accident. Rep also said that the lady said I was speeding so they needed to get my side of the story. Well i got a dashcam and sent them the vid. Week later I called the insurance to get an update and the rep said “yeah, we will claim 100% liability”.
It’s one thing that the lady kept on blaiming the accident on me. It’s another that we agreed to settle on our own but she still got insurance involved.
Needless to say I was glad she called up her insurance. Turns out there’s a small debt on my door and that won’t just buff out.

I was a little nervous at first i expected the worst - for her insurance to blame me too. But looking at the video over again it was at the time of the day where it was really difficult to see her reverse lights. Also she didn’t even have her brake light on and her reverse lifht was barely visible. The sub next to her had their brake lights o n from what it seems like they saw me and was waiting on me to pass. But she didn’t see me or she didn’t bother turning her head she just kept backing up. She actually hit my rear door and wheel so i was definitely passed her when she backed up in me
If she lied to the base cops, follow up with them and complain nicely about it. They have the ability to restrict their driving on base for several months for shit like this. If you can get that done, it’ll make their commute a royal pain in the ass.
The traffic judge on NASNI (also known as naval base coronado) is a fucking prick and gets off on it. A coworker of mine got a ticket for slow rolling through a stop sign at like 0400 on the back part of base because he was called in for an actual emergency.
The judge cancelled his appointment twice after letting him sit in the pass and ID office for hours waiting (and that was AFTER he had to stand outside in the sun in line for almost an hour because their COVID rules won't let you even enter the building until you are being helped). Then on the third time finally saw him and lectured him for over an hour on dangerous driving and how if he continues like this he is going to kill someone and it will probably be a kid and blah blah blah.
My coworker is in his 70's and drives an EV - not exactly a 20 something junior Sailor speeding around with a dodge charger.
The dash cam isnt even needed to spot the idiot on this one. The front your car hit the side of hers as she was turning. Pretty easy to figure out the only way this happens is if she crosses over infront of you
They could say they were making a left hand turn from the street on the right while dashcammer was also making a left. I think it’d still be their fault but yeah lol people make weird shit up

I doubt it’s even that—there’s just no incentive to take responsibility. Like yeah you could just say my bad and tell the officers that it was your fault then have your insurance pay up and then suffer the consequences because you’re 100% on the hook or you can deny deny deny, be a pain in the ass, drag it out and there might be a slim chance you get away or at the very least drag out the process and make the person you hit suffer a bit longer in the meantime.

Oh god... this reminded me of an accident I was in back in 2015. An old lady crashed into me and she took the blame (as she should, since I did NOTHING wrong). But her insurance company would not accept this and tried to fight my claim. This went on for 15 months. My insurance company also went against me, just wanted me to accept the blame and move on. I stod on my ground and fought back against two insurance companies. It was so bizare, when you think you had your insurance company in your back and the written statement of the other driver etc. They tried to claim shared blame after 3-4 months. I rejected it. After 12 months I got a letter saying this were going to be solved by arbitration. So after 15 months I got a 50+ pages of documents saying I won. Waste of time and money... The poor lady who hit me didn't know anything until she got called to meet up at the place of the incident to tell her story. Edit: yeah, I changed my insurance company...
Well done! Had a big argument with my own insurance company when I was hit by another of their drivers (who tried to undertake me on a single carriageway road that wasn't wide enough for two cars abreast. And this was in a line of traffic during a diversion caused by what I later found out was a fatal accident.) INsurance company insisted it was 50:50, and that I could and should have avoided the contact (which would have meant veering into oncoming traffic!) In the end, as they called it 50:50 I got half of my excess back, and for the remaing £200 or so it wasn't worth my time fighting it, but yeah, I changed insurance company too.
Exactly this. Every insurance card I've ever had even clearly reminds you that in the case of an accident, you should never claim responsibility or fault, even if your think you were at fault.
Don't ever admit fault. Even an innocuous "I'M SO SORRY! ARE YOU OK?" can be used against you. Especially if there's a dashcam involved. Every accident I've been in, and that's not many, my first questions are always "Is everyone alright? Nobody bleeding? Nobody stuck in the car?".

Its so easy too. One time a driver was being a bit of a dick tailgating me. I responded by also being a dick...when the lane split into 2 and I knew he was going to fly by me, I edged over into the left lane a bit to fuck with him and he clipped me and broke my rear driver side taillight. After we both pulled over I got out and was just like "WHAT THE FUCK DUDE" and he responded with "bro we both did the same shit" like referring to how we were both asshole drivers in this situation and I immediately deflated and dropped my pissed off act and was like "...yeahhh...you're right" and we talked it out and he gave me some cash so I wouldn't report it (he was clearly a drug dealer lol) and we both went on our way.
My mom rear ended a drug deal in progress drunk with me in the car (age 6, detroit east side) they paid her to just drive away.

Would’ve probably killed a motorcyclist. I really do think when something is so egregious like this, and they claim no fault, they should lose their license for some amount of time.
My husband had a subordinate who was in this exact situation on a 10-day-old Harley. Dude had enough time to make a decision, and judged that hitting her and launching over the hood (55mph zone) would be really bad, so he dropped the motorcycle and slid into her bike first. Broke both his leg and his collarbone (so no crutches, hello motorized wheelchair) but survived, so it was a win. The bike was new, he wasn't a new rider - he was 40 and had a motorcycle endorsement on his license and was wearing proper PPE, so no road rash, just the broken bones from the collision.
I actually have DashCam footage of something very similar. Hard to describe scenario, but a car did a u-turn, essentially like this car was doing and the guy dumped his bike from too much front brake, and slid under the car. I was coming other direction and DashCam got it all. Saved him a lot of heartache with insurance, because you know “the motorcycle was speeding” was where they were going with it. Predicting and reading body language is huge on a bike.
The best advice I got shortly before buying my bike was "imagine that half of the cars on the road can't see you, and the other half are actively trying to kill you".

As a biker, you're right. Over the years I've become intimately aware of how drivers are acting coming up to them. I'm about 80% accurate on noticing people with a phone in hand from a hundred yards away. I can tell when people are going to change lanes about three seconds before they start. I've learned to figure out what people will do before they do it, but because my life depends on it, I've learned to always assume they'll do something stupid even if I have no indication to believe it otherwise.
And that's why I will never get a bike, no matter how cool it sounds and may be. That sounds so fucking stressful and like I would be a nervous wreck the entire time outside of back country roads.

My father got himself a motorcycle and had it for about a month when he had to take it down and under a truck rather than run into the truck that ran a stop sign. My mother said that with 4 kids aged 5 and under, he could have the motorcycle or he could have a family. He sold the bike and bought a VW Karmann Ghia. Which I later drove in HS because I was the lightest one with a license and the floor was almost rusted through. Yeah, that gave me the warm and fuzzies.

Yeah I used to deliver pizza to Norad (Peterson, not Cheyenne) and U.S. Space Command. Usually just outside the building but in the lobbies a couple of times. A one-time background check for a pass and then vehicle searches each trip was all that was required.

This is why I SWEAR by dash cams. Some douche bag hit my driver’s side mirror today when my roommate went to get gas down the street. She said he was apologizing to her initially because it was his fault. Then the cops show up, dude tries to claim it wasn’t his fault. She said he told the cop, “it was a classic case of 2 people getting too close and hitting mirrors.” Didn’t know that was considered a thing, old man. GOT YOU ON CAMERA BITCH!!! People never cease to amaze me…and not in a good way, smh….

I recently had a guy blow a red light while traffic in all other lanes around him was stopped, bounce off the car with the green light that pulled into the intersection, and hit me head on as I was sitting in my stationary car waiting for the light to go green. He told both the cops and his insurance that he had a very clear green light and the other car pulled out in front of him. I emailed his insurance guy my dashcam video while I was on the phone with him and my insurance called me literally three minutes after I got off the phone to tell me they were taking full fault for the accident. The fucking clown was even going around at the scene like "I had a green light, he pulled out in front of me right?" to he people trying to help the old dude he tboned and nearly killed, after I'd already told him he blew the red light and that I had it on my dashcam.
I had an old lady hit me while she was in the right turn lane…partially over the line…while I had a green light & was traveling straight. I pulled over in a lot right where it happened, while she started driving away, then reversed on the shoulder, & finally came to check out *her* car. She then comes at me & says “You came barreling out of nowhere!” I told her I was driving the speed limit (45), while traveling through an intersection, just like all the other cars in front, next to, & behind me were, with a green light. I was 20, so she desperately wanted to make me feel like a dumb kid. This was 20yrs ago & I will never forget that dumb shit.

I knew this one girl in highschool. She had just gotten her G2 ( licence to drive by yourself here) and about a week later was driving home. As she's coming down the street to her house, this older lady throws her car in reverse, and slams her foot down on the gas, backing straight into the passenger side of this girl. She hit her so hard, and stayed on the gas long enough to push this teenagers car all the way up against the curb on the other side of the street. The old nag then gets out, looks at the girl, and says "you teenage drivers all drive like fucking morons, this is your fault". The woman fought it every step of the way trying to come up with every possible excuse she could to try and blame the 17 year old.
Holy shit, that’s absolutely terrible! I can’t imagine that girl wanting to drive ever again after that. Also, your story reminded me of another wild accident I witnessed. About 8yrs ago I was at work (grocery store) chatting with a few regular customers, when we all hear what honestly sounded like an explosion. I take a few steps forward to check the front end, & just as I do I see the entire smoothie dept sliding across the floor & into the registers…as the poor girl who was working it was flying in the air. Turns out this older lady “got mixed up between the gas & breaks” & smashed into our brick store going roughly 45mph (which I still don’t understand bc the lot at that store was pretty tiny). I’ve seen news reports of that kind of stuff happening, but holy shit is it a terrifying thing to experience it close up. I feel like people need to be tested a little more rigorously as we age when it comes to driver’s licenses.
one of my relatives died this way, on mother's day. An elderly person mixed up the pedals and drove into a strip mall and pinned her against the store, after she pushed her daughter out of the way.
This happens almost every day at my gym. The entrance is at a 4-way intersection and the through traffic doesn’t have stop signs. Old people will pull right out in front of you assuming you’re going to stop for your imaginary sign.

Remember to record every charge and bill. Their insurance company will pay for it. Medical bills, new car, miss days of work, and any other expenses from the incident can be sued for and gotten. Plus a bit more for extra that covers attorney fees and gives you a bit for safety net.
My friend recently got hit by a car while riding his longboard, in the walk zone of an intersection while the walk sign was lit. Crushed his foot. Initially the settlement was looking like ~$5 million. Now his foot is sending clots up his leg, requiring emergency surgery. Settlement looking like $22 million now. Always keep your receipts.

Generally I'd agree with you, as even the chance of one of those buggers breaking free and going to my heart is enough stress to terrify me into a heart attack on its own, but my dad has one right now after a foot surgery and weirdly nobody seems to be very concerned at all. The doc just threw some meds at him and said they'll see him again in like a month or two and do another ultrasound then or something. So idk... I'd probably still just take the 5 million but my dad would probably go big or go home lol
Yeah, DVTs cam be common following injuries and/or major surgeries, but if caught early, usually can be medically managed with blood thinners, which is likely what your dad got. Not much more can or should be done because drastic measures could likely make things worse (read, surgery itself increases risk of DVT), but on the bright side, blood thinners are usually very effective at keeping off those clots and therefore preventing something like that hitting your heart or lungs.

I have no clue honestly. Those numbers are the damages being sought, not necessarily what the final payout will be, and I doubt it'll be in one lump sum. Likely the driver and car owner will both have their wages garnished for the rest of their lives, after their insurance pays out part and drops them like a hand grenade.
They will only pay out what they are insured for. If they have state minimums, that's only $15k.
Your insurance company would end up covering above that but can still be limited. Having full tort would help as well.
That's right but hopefully the driver has some underinsured motorist coverage. The attorney is going to take 1/3 of any settlement funds plus case expenses...and the health insurance company will also likely take a cut.

Fair assessment. Honestly, I couldn't get a read one way or the other what they were doing. They weren't driving in a way that would inform other drivers of their intentions. No blinker and minimal "body language." I always assume that those are signs that a person doesn't plan ahead and doesn't pay much attention.

I had one. Unfortunately, I live in Las Vegas. The first 110 degree F (43C) day (of which we have a lot) and the thing became an actual DashCam. It melted...
I live in Vegas and my Nexar died after 2 summers by my current one has been running strong for 3 summers already. I have the Vantrue N4. But the other thing I’ve found to help is when you put your windshield protector, don’t put it behind the dashcam. The heat that gets trapped in there intensifies and can melt the dashcam faster. What I do now is tuck the windshield protector under the dash cam and so far so good.
I've got ceramic window tint on my windshield. It blocks all the UV rays and cuts down the temp in the car significantly, despite being so light of a tint that you can't tell it's there. No idea how much that helps the dashcam!
I've got three in Phoenix that have survived surface parking in the office parking lot at 115F. All are random ass brands with instructions in Chinese, so you have my sympathies for your bad luck but you should probably try again.
Making sure it's a capacitor model and not with with a lithium ion battery is a game changer as well.

Car accidents on base are already such a circus, because they are just so uncommon. The base cops often have no idea who even needs to be notified, other than their boss. In seven years, I saw 8 accidents one base. 3 were idiots who tried to flee the city cops by driving onto a military base (absolute worst option). 5 were dependas who didn't pay attention and rear-ended people during Retreat, when everyone has to stop.
The cops where horrible! Tried grabbing the dash cam from my windshield, it had a SD card. Was more concerned why I was on base as a civilian then the actual accident, I was dropping off my roommate. The EMT shut the door in their face saying I had to go to the hospital. The police listed me at fault, until my lawyer provided her insurance the video while we where on the phone with them because we wanted to hear what they had to say first.

It's not explicitly that dashcams aren't allowed. It's just that there are many locations where photo/video are not allowed. Dashcams are definitely a challenge, and I wouldn't be surprised if a local policy banned them.
They’re explicitly not allowed, at least in army bases, if you do ACP guard, you go to a class where they tell you your responsibilities and one of them is to tell people with dash cam that they’re not allowed on post.

I remember being so shocked when I found out that there were states where the cops were in charge of assigning fault. Seems pretty much like horseshit to me. Even if they saw the accident themselves in real time, they should be witnesses at best.
What is Retreat?
At the end of the duty day (around 5 or 6pm), "Retreat" will play over the base-wide loud speakers, followed by the National Anthem. Everything on base stops during that time. If driving, you're supposed to park. Some branches require you to get out of your car. If you are out of the car, service members face the nearest flag and salute. All of sudden, boom, some lady in nissan hit me. If i rememeber correctly first thing out of her mouth when i went out to check if everything’s ok was “why you speeding through the parking lot?” She said this adamantly to me, and to the mall security. We ended up deciding the damage was minor enough to just simply fix it on our own. We AGREED to this before leaving the parking lot. Also, the mall security and an accident police witnessed it - we didn’t file an accident report. Later in the day I got a call from her insurance saying she claimed the accident. Rep also said that the lady said I was speeding so they needed to get my side of the story. Well i got a dashcam and sent them the vid. Week later I called the insurance to get an update and the rep said “yeah, we will claim 100% liability”. It’s one thing that the lady kept on blaiming the accident on me. It’s another that we agreed to settle on our own but she still got insurance involved. Needless to say I was glad she called up her insurance. Turns out there’s a small debt on my door and that won’t just buff out. Oh BTW she works for a county sheriff’s office.

Also she didn’t even have her brake light on and her reverse lifht was barely visible. She actually hit my rear door and wheel so i was definitely passed her when she backed up in me

If she lied to the base cops, follow up with them and complain nicely about it. They have the ability to restrict their driving on base for several months for shit like this. If you can get that done, it’ll make their commute a royal pain in the ass.
The traffic judge on NASNI (also known as naval base coronado) is a fucking prick and gets off on it. A coworker of mine got a ticket for slow rolling through a stop sign at like 0400 on the back part of base because he was called in for an actual emergency. The judge cancelled his appointment twice after letting him sit in the pass and ID office for hours waiting (and that was AFTER he had to stand outside in the sun in line for almost an hour because their COVID rules won't let you even enter the building until you are being helped). Then on the third time finally saw him and lectured him for over an hour on dangerous driving and how if he continues like this he is going to kill someone and it will probably be a kid and blah blah blah. My coworker is in his 70's and drives an EV - not exactly a 20 something junior Sailor speeding around with a dodge charger.

Also, the dumbest thing about that driver is all she literally would have to do is drive another 5 seconds to the light right after the gym, and make either a u turn or a right turn and still end up where she needed. It ain’t like she was on the highway and next exit is 5 mileses down, the stop light is literally right past flag circle and NASNI isn’t that busy at that time of day
