given how much organised football fans are than our cricket fans and the game's duration, football could have easily toppled cricket, only if we were to participate in one fuckin wc
>one fuckin wc
Trust me this is what we all need . Just consistent games at a high level . Sb bhaag ke aaenge .
Because most of the people I know , watch European football .
There is a huge market waiting to be tapped. If the shareholders (FSDL, AIFF, clubs at all levels) just get their act together. You don't have to sell people the sport, you just have to make your matches more attractive.
I feel like the numbers don't really add up. What exactly makes a fan? 612 million cricket fans? that's like 40% of the country. We surely don't have such a high audience in terms of concurrent viewership. 305 million football fans? 1 in 5 indians are football fans? Idts
I did some digging and their website says this is an estimate made from 12,000 people, and a fan/audience member is defined as "someone who watched sports content on TV or OTT in the last one year for at least 30 mins." Imo, that is a misleading bar for who is a fan.
Even I am highly skeptical of these numbers. I read the following few months back which estimated a much lower viewership numbers, but with this as well since they use a sample which is just 12k. I don't find this accurate as well.
"Earlier this month, we released our syndicated report on the sports category in India, titled We, The Sports Fans Of India. The report, based on a research conducted among 12,000 Indians across the country between July and December 2021, takes an in-depth look at the sports category in India. Here are some key findings:
In the report, a 'Sports Fan’ is defined as someone who watched live sports on TV or OTT in the last month for at least 30 mins. as an active viewer (i.e., excluding passive co-viewing in a family/ group scenario). The report pegs India’s Sports Fan Universe at 136.3 Million people, i.e., 9.8% of India’s population. The report profiles this universe by gender, age, NCCS, pop strata (town class) and states."

Also, it only considers watching sports for at least 30 mins in a month. I don't think so any serious sports fan watches so little of a sport/team they love. So it is very difficult to gauge the actual numbers but yeah I don't think that it's any way close to 600M.
This is the audience base, not fans. This is the potential audience you can market your product to.
Ormax is the most reputed organization when it comes to viewership numbers. You don't need a huge sample size for estimations as long as your method is scientifically accurate. This is how political opinion/exit polls happen as well.
Even if most of the people watching football are watching outside leagues, its still a positive thing to see
It means if the right product is presented this huge audience can be tapped into
305 million people into football?
That’s more than the population of all countries except China and USA. And still they say Indians aren’t into football.
I feel that maybe only 20-30% of the football viewership is for Indian football (clubs and NT). Rest is worldwide competition viewership.
20-30 is too high, IMO. May be 10%
Yeah fair point.
Hockey needs a franchise league like IPL that goes for a month.
They had one but it was discontinued because of financial reasons

Or our neighbours gave a flying fuck about football I feel like cricket popularity has some correlation with patriotism (India vs pak)
No cricket started booming after we actually won something before that BCCI was very poor board they didn't have any money to give to the players

World Cup would be huge.

It's more like they don't give a shit actually they don't makes you wonder what they actually want
No support for Gilli danda?

Exactly, there is no way we have 60 crore cricket fans in India, that’s like every second person watches some sport
