# Tragic story of ‘Lionel the Lion-faced Man' who died young after a life of ridicule
Stephan Bibrowski was born in Bielsk, Poland in 1890 with stunning blonde hair — that covered his entire body from head to toe
Aghast at this so-called abomination, his mother gave him up and turned him over to a businessman who paraded him across Europe as a sideshow attraction before taking him to America in 1901.
Once in the U.S., Barnum & Bailey quickly snatched Bibrowski up and put him on display as "Lionel the Lion-Faced Man," describing him as "half-man half-lion." For 20 years, Bibrowski was exhibited as a "freak," with audiences scarcely realizing that the gentle soul behind the hair was a soft-spoken man who knew five languages and nurtured a secret dream of leaving the stage and becoming a dentist.

Like this handsome fella, Atchoum.
This instantly reminded me of Hermey the Christmas Elf who was stereotyped into making toys, but also dreamt of one day becoming a dentist from Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.
wild can you imagine growing all that hair ON your nose? interesting how he combed it up and towards his head, rather than parting it down the middle. I wonder if he experimented with that.
It made him look MORE like a lion, which is what PT Barnum wanted, for his Half man... Half lion... FREAK!
Seriously, that's the whole reason why his hair was dressed that way.
I'm pretty sure that's how all the big foot stories came to be. bunch of people with this mutation cast out of their villages living in the woods steeling sheep to survive
"when he was born, Bibrowski's parents knew he was different immediately when they saw he was covered in 2.5 cm thick hair across his entire body"
...yea...that'll do it......
The heartburn the mother suffered during her pregnancy must’ve been off the scale!
*(FYI, heartburn is associated with how much hair a newborn has at birth)*

Finally someone else! It always seemed so obvious to me. After seeing “wolf boy” or something like that on the cover of a tabloid as a child
Good point. We should ask AJ on The Why Files about this.
He died at the young age of 41 from a heart attack.
Pretty good for a Furby. /s
Brother was a Wookie before it was cool. Boss
So when he was born he looked like a puppy. Who doesn't love a puppy?
We all love a puppy. But if one popped out of my wife, I'd shoot our f*cking Labrador! 😁
“Fur” is a movie in which RDJ has this affliction. Excellent movie imo.
What a heartbreaking story. Shame on his mother.
