I heard that as, Maddy wants to get close to her and she wants to talk about boys, so Maddy talks about boys too. But Maddy's not attracted to boys (whether or not she admitted it to herself then) so she doesn't know what about them straight girls like, and names someone most straight girls don't.

Yeah I think we’re on the same page, in fact your read had more nuance in that she named people most straight girls wouldn’t.
I read it as that too and Maddie exploring masculinity and what types of masculinity attractive
